A new anionic methoxy methylbis(2-pyridyl)borateligand enablesfacile oxidation of the derived dimethylplatinum(II) complex, 10, with O2in methanol to produce a mixture oftwo platinum(IV) complexes in combined quantitative yield, one supportedby a modified ligand, dimethoxybis(2-pyridyl)borate, and the secondsupported by the original methoxy methylbis(2-pyridyl)borate. Theformer product results from the aerobic PtII-to-PtIVoxidation and B-to-PtIVmethyl migration withsubsequent bridging of the boron and PtIVcenters by amethoxy group derived from the solvent. A similar reactivity was alsodemonstrated for 11, the methyl methoxo platinum(II)analogue of 10. Factors responsible for the product distributionare discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
