The production of edge-glued boards is one of the possibilities of using European beech wood for products with higher added value. European beech is highly abundant in the forests of Central Europe, but it is a wood species that has specific characteristics that affect the efficiency of processing. The dimensions and quality of the raw material are determined by the standard. This study analyzes the influence of the quality of European beech raw material on the quantitative and qualitative yield during the production of cross-sections used to produce edge-glued boards. Results show that the effect of class (raw material quality) on the quantity of timber produced is not remarkable. For classes III.B and III.C, the most prevalent factors diminishing yield were the quality and extent of red false heartwood, as well as cracks. This study confirmed that superior raw material quality has a positive impact on the yield of blanks with the highest quality.

Reaction wood is a wood defect arising during the growth of the tree in the part of the trunk that is under tension (hardwood tree species) or compression (coniferous tree species). Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) tension wood has different anatomical and chemical characteristics than normal (opposite) wood. The difference in density is conditioned by the percentage of the gelatinous layer (G-layer). Fibre cells in reaction beech wood have a different cell wall structure and a different chemical composition. Tension wood cannot be detected by the naked eye. It is only possible to assume its occurrence based on the macroscopic characteristics of the logs, such as a woolly surface, taper or eccentric pith, and so forth. However, these are imprecise and unreliable methods that have minimal effectiveness, especially when shortening the length of the log for cut-outs. This study aimed to create a unique chemical reagent for the detection of tension wood in logs and timber and wood products immediately. The present research can contribute to the mitigation of flaws resulting from the reaction of wood in timber production while addressing noticeable constraints in manufacturing, such as energy resources and the availability of wood raw materials. This can be achieved through the efficient identification of reaction wood in materials. The colour change is only temporary and will fade over time. After the chemical reagent has dried on the surface, the surface can be milled. The colour change extends to a depth of approx. of 3 to 5 mm.

The article presents the impact of drying process and selected parameters on the color changes on the surface of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.). Three predetermined process conditions (modes), mild, normal, and intensive, were investigated. The experiments were conducted using a semi-industrial scale dryer designed at the Gdańsk University of Technology with a loading capacity of 0.55 m3. The drying process was applied to pine wood grown in the northern part of Pomeranian region in Poland. The specimens were selected taking into consideration the radial angle of the growth rings. During each drying mode, 25 pieces of wood with dimensions (thickness, width, length) of 0.03 m, 0.2 m, and 1.5 m, respectively, were dried. The total color change (ΔE) after drying process and color saturation (h*) before and after drying processes of the wood surface was determined using the normalized CIELAB methods. The obtained results indicated that the color change of the pine wood surface increased simultaneously with the intensification of the drying process. However, the normalized wood quality after drying under intensive drying process conditions remained within the standard limits. The application of intensive drying process conditions remarkably changes the surface color of the obtained material, while remarkably reducing the drying process duration.

Wood is subject to various environmental conditions during its processing, with temperatures being one of the most relevant to the material’s behaviour. The heating process during drying is crucial for both the final quality of the dried wood and heat consumption. As the first stage of the drying process, it is essential to achieve adequate overheating in the middle of the thickness without causing damage. The present article focuses on the influence of pine wood thickness on the freezing process and heating during the warm-air drying process. Similarity theory was applied to the theoretical calculation of the time to heat the frozen wood, where Fourier and Biot’s criteria were used. This study focused on the impact of the wood sawing pattern on 50 mm thick beech timber, followed by cross-cutting on the 3 m long, 50 × 50 mm beech blanks. The study analyzed two methods of cutting patterns of beech blanks (parallel to the surface of the timber and parallel to the grain fiber of the timber) regarding yield values and the size of longitudinal warping after air-drying. The yield values were higher (from 65.14 to 72.70 %) when producing long beech blanks using the method of sawing parallel to the timber’s axis (B) compared to parallel to the edge of the blank (from 60.38 to 68.40 %). Results showed that a crucial factor for choosing the cutting method (A or B) is the taper of the logs. For blanks with a taper ≥ 1.3 cm.m-1, it is more advantageous in terms of longitudinal warping and yield to use the method of sawing parallel to the timber's axis.

Spiral grains are one of the most important tree growth defects that can remarkably affect the shape stability of lumber. This growth defect is observed by an oblique arrangement of axially oriented cell elements in the wood. This research focused on identifying and measuring selected shape changes caused by the spiral grains in the log. Hornbeam logs with spiral grain and with no spiral grain aged 60 and 52 years were selected to detect shape changes. Following the research and the norms of STN EN 1309-3 (49 1013), DIN (4074-5), and ASTM D245, it can be stated that spiral grain is an essential factor affecting the shape stability of hornbeam lumber. In the case of lumber with spiral grain, the spiral grain increased by up to 8° within three months. The warp of both types (bow, crook) increased exponentially throughout the study, peaking between the third and fourth week with an increase in warp bow of 26 mm and 17 mm in warp crook.

The cost of raw materials has a major role in the wood industry. From this point of view, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct log-sawing pattern, which will optimize the sawing process and increase the quantity and quality of the material as well. For measurements, we used beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.). Beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) is the most common wood species in the Slovak Republic; the total amount in forests is 34.8%. Beech wood has a high frequency of defects, such as red false heartwood, reaction wood (i.e., tension wood), dote, cracks, and so on. This research aimed to analyze the effect of the log-sawing patterns of through-and-through sawing, cant sawing, and quarter sawing on the resulting quantitative–qualitative yields of beech timber. The results showed that the highest quantitative yield was observed with the cant sawing pattern, at 84%, which was, on average, 17.3% higher compared to other types of cutting. It was found that quarter sawing resulted in a higher qualitative yield compared to through-and-through sawing or cant sawing (V5 = 62.69% and V6 = 47.86%).

The thermal treatment of wood changes its structure due to the degradation of wood polymers (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin), so the physical properties of wood are either improved or degraded. Color changes apply not only to natural wood, but also to such wood composites for which some amount of glue is used in their construction (e.g., plywood, blockboard or laminboard). This article is focused on the analysis of hornbeam and field maple wood color changes influenced by drying temperature. Two types of drying modes were used: hot-air mode where the temperature of the drying environment was 60 °C, and high-temperature mode with a drying temperature of 120 °C. The drying mode was divided into two phases depending on the moisture content of the wood. The compared woods had similar values of color coordinates at the beginning of drying. During hot-air drying, the largest changes in color coordinates occurred during the first 24 h. The total color difference between the color at the end and the beginning of drying was 7.3 for hornbeam and 11.1 for maple. The overall color difference between the compared woods was minimal. During high-temperature drying (120 °C), the color changes of the dried woods were more pronounced. In the case of maple wood, there was a very significant change in color and the value of ΔE* was twice as high as for hornbeam. The total color difference between the color at the end and at the beginning of drying was 8.7 for hornbeam and 18.9 for maple.

The influence of the impregnation process of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) samples on the electrical resistance changes and the moisture-content measurement accuracy is presented in this paper. In this study, the resistances of impregnated and nonimpregnated green pine timber harvested from northern Poland were compared. An impregnation method based on a vacuum-pressure chamber was used. Copper salts were applied as the impregnated solutions. The obtained results of the electrical resistance comparison showed a dependence of wood resistance on the moisture content. Higher conductivity occurred in impregnated wood samples filled with copper salt compared with wood samples without impregnation. Noticeable differences in the electrical resistance values were observed when the wood moisture content was significantly above the Fibre Saturation Point (FSP).

In wood processing, wood is exposed to an environmental temperature of less than 0 °C for some time, which mainly occurs during the air drying of wood in the winter months, or when lumber is stored in wood piles outdoors before the kiln drying process. In these cases, the wood freezing process increases the degree of freezing of the wood, subsequently significantly affecting the process of its heating during further processing (for example, in the cutting process). The most common method is heating by humid air, during the hot air drying of wood. We analyzed the temperature profiles on a cross-section of wood and moisture losses due to the freezing process and the size of moisture gradients. We compared theoretical calculations of the time required for defrosting and heating of wood with the experimentally measured values. The results show that the moisture content (MC) of wood has a remarkable effect on the wood freezing process. In samples with an average MC of 35.47%, the temperature drop was faster. After 10 h, the temperatures on the entire cross-section of the samples reached the lowest value of −13.2 °C. In samples with an average initial MC of 81.38%, three stages of temperature reduction in the wood were observed. The temperature dropped and the lowest temperature of −20.11 °C was reached after 24 h. The defrosting and heating process of samples with lower MC was significantly easier. The desired temperature of 65 °C in the middle of the samples was reached in 2 h and 20 min. The total time to defrost and heat the second group of samples (MC > FSP) was 3 h 30 min.
