This article presents a comprehensive validation of the hybrid broadband ground-motion simulation approach (via the commonly used Graves and Pitarka method) in a New Zealand context with small magnitude point source ruptures using an extensive set of 5218 ground motions recorded at 212 sites from 479 active shallow crustal earthquakes across the country. Modifications to the simulation method inferred from a previous New Zealand validation are implemented, and the improvements are explicitly quantified. Empirical ground-motion models are also considered to provide a benchmark for simulation prediction accuracy and precision. Examination of intensity measure residuals identifies that the simulation method modifications lead to reduced model prediction bias and within-event variability and provides evidence toward the use of spatially varying coefficient models for simulation parameters, such as the high-frequency Brune stress parameter. Additional biases identified include, among others, underprediction of significant durations at soft soil sites and overprediction of short-period pseudo-spectral accelerations at stiff alluvial gravel and rock sites due to low-estimated 30 m time-averaged shear-wave velocity values.

Ablation treatment for persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF) remains challenging due to the absence of a 'ground truth' for atrial substrate characterization and the presence of multiple mechanisms driving the arrhythmia. We implemented an unsupervised classification to identify clusters of atrial electrograms (AEGs) with similar patterns, which were then validated by AEG-derived markers.956 bipolar AEGs were collected from 11 persAF patients. CARTO variables (Biosense Webster; ICL, ACI and SCI) were used to create a 3D space, and subsequently used to perform an unsupervised classification with k-means. The characteristics of the identified groups were investigated using nine AEG-derived markers: sample entropy (SampEn), dominant frequency, organization index (OI), determinism, laminarity, recurrence rate (RR), peak-to-peak (PP) amplitude, cycle length (CL), and wave similarity (WS).Five AEG classes with distinct characteristics were identified (F = 582, P0.0001). The presence of fractionation increased from class 1 to 5, as reflected by the nine markers. Class 1 (25%) included organized AEGs with high WS, determinism, laminarity, and RR, and low SampEn. Class 5 (20%) comprised fractionated AEGs with in low WS, OI, determinism, laminarity, and RR, and in high SampEn. Classes 2 (12%), 3 (13%) and 4 (30%) suggested different degrees of AEG organization.Our results expand and reinterpret the criteria used for automated AEG classification. The nine markers highlighted electrophysiological differences among the five classes found by the k-means, which could provide a more complete characterization of persAF substrate during ablation target identification in future clinical studies.

Long-term exploration of the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands led to induced seismicity. Over the past nine years, an increasingly sophisticated Ground Motion Model (GMM) has been developed to assess the site response and the related seismic hazard. The GMM output strongly depends on the shear-wave velocity (V S ), among other input parameters. To date, V S model data from soil profiles (Kruiver et al., Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 15(9): 3555–3580, 2017; Netherlands Journal of Geosciences, 96(5): s215–s233, 2017) have been used in the GMM. Recently, new V S profiles above the Groningen gas field were constructed using ambient noise surface wave tomography. These so-called field V S data, even though spatially limited, provide an independent source of V S to check whether the level of spatial variability in the GMM is sufficient. Here, we compared amplification factors (AF) for two sites (Borgsweer and Loppersum) calculated with the model V S and the field V S (Chmiel et al., Geophysical Journal International, 218(3), 1781–1795, 2019 and new data). Our AF results over periods relevant for seismic risk (0.01–1.0 s) show that model and field V S profiles agree within the uncertainty range generally accepted in geo-engineering. In addition, we compared modelled spectral accelerations using either field V S or model V S in Loppersum to the recordings of an earthquake that occurred during the monitoring period (ML 3.4 Zeerijp on 8 January 2018). The modelled spectral accelerations at the surface for both field V S and model V S are coherent with the earthquake data for the resonance periods representative of most buildings in Groningen (T = 0.2 and 0.3 s). These results confirm that the currently used V S model in the GMM captures spatial variability in the site response and represents reliable input for the site response calculations.

The incorporation of local amplification factors determined through site response analyses has become standard practice in site-specific probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA). Another indispensable feature of the current state-of-practice in site-specific PSHA is the identification and quantification of all epistemic uncertainties that influence the final hazard estimates. Consequently, logic trees are constructed not only for seismic source characteristics and ground-motion models (GMMs) but also for the site amplification factors, the latter generally characterized by branches for alternative shear-wave velocity (VS) profiles. However, in the same way that branch weights on alternative GMMs can give rise to unintentionally narrow distributions of predicted ground-motion amplitudes, the distribution of amplification factors obtained from a small number of weighted VS profiles will often be quite narrow at some oscillator frequencies. We propose an alternative approach to capturing epistemic uncertainty in site response in order to avoid such unintentionally constricted distributions of amplification factors using more complete logic-trees for site response analyses. Nodes are included for all the factors that influence the calculated amplification factors, which may include shallow VS profiles, deeper VS profiles, depth of impedance contrasts, low-strain soil damping, and choice of modulus reduction and damping curves. Site response analyses are then executed for all branch combinations to generate a large number 2 of frequency-dependent amplification factors. Finally, these are re-sampled as a discrete distribution with enough branches to capture the underlying distribution of amplification factors (AFs). While this approach improves the representation of epistemic uncertainty in the dynamic site response characteristics, modeling uncertainty in the AFs is not automatically captured in this way, for which reason it is also proposed that a minimum level of epistemic uncertainty should be imposed on the final distribution.

Stress-ribbon footbridges promote the axial behaviour and allow designers to take advantage of the entire sectional areas reducing the required construction materials. In addition to their high structural efficiency and sustainability, they also possess a number of other advantages such as lightness, relatively easy construction possibilities, strong aesthetic characteristics with small impact to the landscape, and minimum maintenance requirements. As a result, they present an attractive proposal for covering medium to large spans in urban and remote places. Whilst currently the structural behaviour of stress-ribbon footbridges has been investigated, more attention has been paid on their static response. Nevertheless, their dynamic response under pedestrian actions might be more critical for their design, as significant vibrations can be generated during service, compromising users’ comfort. This paper presents an investigation of a benchmark stress-ribbon footbridge under static and dynamic pedestrian actions. The influence of geometric non-linearity in the static and the dynamic response was examined. Results show that inclusion of geometric non-linearity affects significantly the stiffness of the bridge and consequently it is important for predicting its behaviour. Finally, based on a parametric study it was found that, increasing the stress-ribbon thickness is an effective way of reducing vibrations and increase comfort for the bridge users.

The time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 m of the ground, VS30, is a key soil descriptor for estimating site response despite its recognized limitations. It is employed in both, site-specific probabilistic hazard assessments (PSHAs) and regional seismic codes. This work presents a model for estimating VS30 in the Iberian Peninsula as a function of three proxies: topographic slope, geological age and lithology at each site. Tasks accomplished include: 1) gathering existing Vs profiles and calculating their VS30; 2) defining an adequate set of representative age and lithological groups; 3) classifying the available VS profiles according to these groups; and 4) carrying out a regression analysis between VS30, slopes, age and lithological groups. Based on the regression analysis and the dependency on the slope, some of the initially proposed groups were amalgamated, before proposing the final model. This model considers topographic slope values extracted from a digital elevation model (DEM) with 200 m horizontal resolution, plus six geological age groups and four lithological groups. It provides an estimate of the mean and standard deviation of (and hence VS30), which can be used for sites without direct estimates of velocity profiles (and VS30) in the Iberian Peninsula.

PurposeSites of highest dominant frequency (HDF) are implicated by many proposed mechanisms underlying persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF). We hypothesized that prospectively identifying and ablating dynamic left atrial HDF sites would favorably impact the electrophysiological substrate of persAF. We aim to assess the feasibility of prospectively identifying HDF sites by global simultaneous left atrial mapping.MethodsPersAF patients with no prior ablation history underwent global simultaneous left atrial non-contact mapping. 30 s of electrograms recorded during AF were exported into a bespoke MATLAB interface to identify HDF regions, which were then targeted for ablation, prior to pulmonary vein isolation. Following ablation of each region, change in AF cycle length (AFCL) was documented (≥ 10 ms considered significant). Baseline isopotential maps of ablated regions were retrospectively analyzed looking for rotors and focal activation or extinction events.ResultsA total of 51 HDF regions were identified and ablated in 10 patients (median DF 5.8Hz, range 4.4–7.1Hz). An increase in AFCL of was seen in 20 of the 51 regions (39%), including AF termination in 4 patients. 5 out of 10 patients (including the 4 patients where AF termination occurred with HDF-guided ablation) were free from AF recurrence at 1 year. The proportion of HDF occurrences in an ablated region was not associated with change in AFCL (τ = 0.11, p = 0.24). Regions where AFCL decreased by 10 ms or more (i.e., AF disorganization) after ablation also showed lowest baseline spectral organization (p < 0.033 for any comparison). Considering all ablated regions, the average proportion of HDF events which were also HRI events was 8.0 ± 13%. Focal activations predominated (537/1253 events) in the ablated regions on isopotential maps, were modestly associated with the proportion of HDF occurrences represented by the ablated region (Kendall’s τ = 0.40, p < 0.0001), and very strongly associated with focal extinction events (τ = 0.79, p < 0.0001). Rotors were rare (4/1253 events).ConclusionTargeting dynamic HDF sites is feasible and can be efficacious, but lacks specificity in identifying relevant human persAF substrate. Spectral organization may have an adjunctive role in preventing unnecessary substrate ablation. Dynamic HDF sites are not associated with observable rotational activity on isopotential mapping, but epi-endocardial breakthroughs could be contributory.

Induced earthquake sequences are typically interpreted through causal triggering mechanisms. However, studies of causality rarely consider large regions and why some regions experiencing similar anthropogenic activities remain largely aseismic. Therefore, it can be difficult to forecast seismic hazard at a regional scale. In contrast, multivariate statistical methods allow us to find the combinations of factors that correlate best with seismicity, which can help form the basis of hypotheses that can be subsequently tested with physical models. Such a statistical approach is particularly important for large regions with newly-emergent seismicity comprising multiple distinct clusters and multi-faceted industrial operations. Recent induced seismicity in the Permian Basin provides an excellent test-bed for multivariate statistical analyses because the main causal industrial and geological factors driving earthquakes in the region remain highly debated. Here, we use logistic regression to retrospectively predict the spatial variation of seismicity across the western Permian Basin. We reproduce the broad distribution of seismicity using a combination of both industrial and geological factors. Our model shows that hydraulic fracturing and/or hydrocarbon production from the Wolfcamp Shale is the strongest predictor of seismicity, although the physical triggering process is unclear due to uncertain earthquake depths. We also find that the proximity to neotectonic faults west of the Delaware Basin is another important factor that contributes to induced seismicity. This higher tectonic stressing, together with a poor correlation between seismicity and large-volume deep salt-water disposal wells indicates a very different mechanism of induced seismicity compared to that in Oklahoma.

The backbone approach to constructing a ground-motion logic tree for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) can address shortcomings in the traditional approach of populating the branches with multiple existing, or potentially modified, ground-motion models (GMMs) by rendering more transparent the relationship between branch weights and the resulting distribution of predicted accelerations. To capture epistemic uncertainty in a tractable manner, there are benefits in building the logic tree through the application of successive adjustments for differences in source, path, and site characteristics between the host region of the selected backbone GMM and the target region for which the PSHA is being conducted. The implementation of this approach is facilitated by selecting a backbone GMM that is amenable to such host-to-target adjustments for individual source, path, and site characteristics. The NGA-West2 GMM of Chiou and Youngs (CY14) has been identified as a highly adaptable model for crustal seismicity that is well suited to such adjustments. Rather than using generic source, path, and site characteristics assumed appropriate for the host region, the final suite of adjusted GMMs for the target region will be better constrained if the host-region parameters are defined specifically on the basis of their compatibility with the CY14 backbone GMM. To this end, making use of a recently developed crustal shear-wave velocity profile consistent with CY14, we present an inversion of the model to estimate the key source and path parameters, namely the stress parameter and the anelastic attenuation. With these outputs, the effort in constructing a ground-motion logic tree for any PSHA dealing with crustal seismicity can be focused primarily on the estimation of the target-region characteristics and their associated uncertainties. The inversion procedure can also be adapted for any application in which different constraints might be relevant.

Point-by-point radiofrequency ablation (RF) and one-shot cryoballoon ablation (CRYO) electrically isolate pulmonary veins (PVs) in atrial fibrillation (AF) using different techniques and energies. This study aimed to examine differences in PVs reconnection pattern and ablation lesions required to re-isolate PVs after failed RF and failed CRYO. Methods Twenty-four patients who had their repeat ablation between January 2017-December 2020 were studied with six months of learning curve for CRYO. Fourteen patients had paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Failed first ablations were defined by electrocardiogram (ECG) documented AF within twelve months following three months blanking period. Repeat ablations were performed using CARTO3® mapping system, which was utilized to locate ablation lesions and impedance drop details. Results 2,260 lesions were collected from 63 reconnected PVs (31 isolated after RF vs 32 isolated veins after CRYO). 849 lesions were targeted towards triggers. Repeat ablation procedure time was similar between both cohorts. However, repeat ablation after failed CRYO had longer fluoroscopy time (19.8±2 vs 12.4±2.1 minutes, P=0.019). The right lower pulmonary vein (RLPV) was reconnected after failed CRYO for AF in 92% of patients and 100% in PAF patients. Although PV reconnection pattern was similar between both cohorts, RLPV and left upper pulmonary vein (LUPV) required more ablation lesions after failed CRYO. Left lower pulmonary vein (LLPV) and right upper pulmonary vein (RUPV) required more ablation lesions after failed RF. Impedance drop was similar in both cohorts. Conclusion After failed CRYO for PAF, RLPV was reconnected in all patients. Introduction Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is an established treatment strategy for atrial fibrillation (AF). Radiofrequency (RF) ablation technology has evolved over the last decade with the very high-power short-duration (vHPSD) temperature-controlled ablation approach emerging as the latest development. The aim of this study was to determine the procedural efficacy, metrics and safety of vHPSD ablation with conventional power-controlled RF (PCRF) ablation and cryo-energy ablation (CRYO). Methods A prospective single tertiary centre analysis was performed on patients undergoing first time PVI ablation from 2019 to 2020. The population was divided in to 4 treatment arms; vHPSD, high-power short-duration (HPSD), PCRF and CRYO. Demographics, clinical and procedural metrics such as PVI duration, ablation time and sedation requirement were collated. Patients were monitored for perioperative complications. Results One hundred patients underwent ablation with 25 cases conducted in each arm. Complete PVI was attained in all study subjects. For the vHPSD group, PVI procedural duration, ablation and fluoroscopy times were 71.7±6.35 min, 9.21±0.76 min and 15.1±1.50 min respectively. The HSPD group exhibited total PVI, burn and fluoroscopy times of 90.2±5.59 min (p=0.03), 10.3±2.40 min (p Conclusion With the emergence of vHPSD RF ablation, preliminary findings indicate significant potential in reduction of procedural and ablation time. Inversions of empirical data and ground-motion models to find Fourier spectral parameters can result in parameter combinations that produce over-saturation of short-period response spectral ordinates. While some evidence for over-saturation in empirical data exists, most ground-motion modellers do not permit this scaling within their models. Host-to-target adjustments that are made to published ground-motion models for use in site-specific seismic hazard analyses frequently require the identification of an equivalent set of Fourier spectral parameters. In this context, when inverting response spectral models that do not exhibit over-saturation effects, it is desirable to impose constraints upon the Fourier parameters to match the scaling of the host-region model. The key parameters that determine whether over-saturation arises are the geometric spreading rate (γ) and the exponential rate within near-source saturation models (hβ). The article presents the derivation of simple nonlinear constraints that can be imposed to prevent over-saturation when undertaking Fourier spectral inversions.

Ground motion simulation validation is an important and necessary task toward establishing the efficacy of physics-based ground motion simulations for seismic hazard analysis and earthquake engineering applications. This article presents a comprehensive validation of the commonly used Graves and Pitarka hybrid broadband ground motion simulation methodology with a recently developed three-dimensional (3D) Canterbury Velocity Model. This is done through simulation of 148 small magnitude earthquake events in the Canterbury, New Zealand, region in order to supplement prior validation efforts directed at several larger magnitude events. Recent empirical ground motion models are also considered to benchmark the simulation predictive capability, which is examined by partitioning the prediction residuals into the various components of ground motion variability. Biases identified in source, path, and site components suggest that improvements to the predictive capabilities of the simulation methodology can be made by using a longer high-frequency path duration model, reducing empirical V-s30-based low-frequency site amplification, and utilizing site-specific velocity models in the high-frequency simulations. Several strong-motion networks have been installed in the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands to record ground motions associated with induced earthquakes. There are now more than 450 permanent surface accelerographs plus a mobile array of 450 instruments, which, in addition to many instrumented boreholes, yield a wealth of data. The database of recordings has been of fundamental importance to the development of ground-motion models that form a key element of the seismic hazard and risk estimations for the field. In order to maximise the benefit that can be derived from these recordings, this study evaluates the usability of the recordings from the different networks, in general terms and specifically with regards to the frequency ranges with acceptable signal-to-noise ratios. The study also explores the consistency among the recordings from the different networks, highlighting in particular how a configuration error was identified and resolved. The largest accelerograph network consists of instruments housed in buildings around the field, frequently installed on the lower parts of walls rather than on the floor. A series of experiments were conducted, using additional instruments installed adjacent to these buildings and replicating the installation configuration in full-scale shake table tests, to identify the degree to which structural response contaminated the recordings. The general finding of these efforts was that for PGV and oscillator periods above 0.1 s, the response spectral ordinates from these recordings can be used with confidence.

In this study we examine the topic of inverse form-finding, also referred to as topology finding, for tensegrity structures. Specifically, the problem addressed is given the specification of final nodal positions for a tensegrity, we seek to find appropriate connectivities, or topologies, that satisfy stability and connectivity constraints. Two new algorithms are presented in the paper. The first may be applied for generating prestress-stable tensegrity structures, while the second can be used to generate super-stable tensegrities. Numerical examples for both 2D and 3D tensegrities are provided to demonstrate that these new algorithms can produce desirable structures with nodal positions being the only prescribed piece of information. We also show that inverse form-finding of a specific Class k tensegrity can be formulated into a graph factorization problem. This is the first time that both the stability property and class can be specified among the few existing inverse form-finding methods. These new methods facilitate the design process in which a desired nodal geometry is prescribed, and viable structural configurations consistent with this geometry can be obtained.

Three important aspects of ground-motion modelling for regional or portfolio risk analyses are discussed. The first issue is the treatment of discretisation of continuous ground-motion fields for generating spatially correlated discrete fields. Shortcomings of the present approach in which correlation models based upon point estimates of ground motions are used to represent correlations within and between spatial regions are highlighted. It is shown that risk results will be dependent upon the chosen spatial resolution if the effects of discretisation are not adequately treated. Two aspects of non-ergodic groundmotion modelling are then discussed. Correlation models generally used within risk modelling are traditionally based upon very simple partitioning of ground-motion residuals. As regional risk analyses move to non-ergodic applications where systematic site effects are considered, these correlation models (both inter-period and spatial models) need to be revised. The nature of these revisions are shown herein. Finally, evidence for significantly reduced between-event variability within earthquake sequences is presented. The ability to progressively constrain location and sequence-dependent systematic offsets from ergodic models as earthquake sequences develop can have significant implications for aftershock risk assessments.

Changes in atrial fibrillation cycle length (AF-CL) are broadly used as a ‘ground truth’ to assess the effect of substrate modification during AF ablation. This work sought to optimize thresholds for changes in coronary sinus CL (CS-CL) after local ablation using different atrial electrogram (AEG)-derived markers. 834 AEGs were collected from 11 patients undergoing persAF ablation. CS-CL was measured before and after each ablation point. Five AEG-derived markers were tested as classifiers for CS-CL changes: ICL (Biosense Webster), CFE-Mean (St. Jude Medical), Wave Similarity, Shannon Entropy and AEG-CL. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was used to assess the quality of classification for each marker. Maximum AUROC was found at threshold values between 9 and 14 ms in all markers, except for Shannon Entropy. The average AUROC of the five markers reached a maximum of 0.60 at a threshold value of 10 ms. The 10 ms threshold is suggested as a starting setpoint for future studies seeking to identify AF ablation targets based on an objective ‘ground truth ‘.

This article presents a numerical assessment of pedestrian-induced vibrations for a wide range of girder footbridges before and after the installation of tuned-mass dampers (TMD). Realistic pedestrian loads are defined using a stochastic model that represents the key characteristics of pedestrians and their intra- and inter-subject variability with the aim of ensuring an accurate estimation of the dynamic response. A comprehensive set of numerical analyses have been performed considering different cross sections, structural materials, span lengths (up to 100 m), and pedestrian flows. The optimal TMD characteristics, number and location, required to reduce the accelerations, down to a level that fulfils serviceability criteria, are identified. Design recommendations for girder footbridges implementing damping devices at the design stage are also included.
