The concentration of dissolved barium in seawater ([Ba]SW) is influenced by both primary productivity and ocean circulation patterns. Reconstructing past subsurface [Ba]SW can therefore provide important information on processes which regulate global climate. Previous Ba/Ca measurements of scleractinian and bamboo deep-sea coral skeletons exhibit linear relationships with [Ba]SW, acting as archives for past Ba cycling. However, skeletal Ba/Ca ratios of the Stylasteridae – a group of widely distributed, azooxanthellate, hydrozoan coral – have not been previously studied. Here, we present Ba/Ca ratios of modern stylasterid (aragonitic, calcitic and mixed mineralogy) and azooxanthellate scleractinian skeletons, paired with published proximal hydrographic data. We find that [Ba]SW and sample mineralogy are the primary controls on stylasterid Ba/Ca, while seawater temperature exerts a weak secondary control. [Ba]SW also exerts a strong control on azooxanthellate scleractinian Ba/Ca. However, Ba-incorporation into scleractinian skeletons varies between locations and across depth gradients, and we find a more sensitive relationship between scleractinian Ba/Ca and [Ba]SW than previously reported. Paired Sr/Ca measurements suggest that this variability in scleractinian Ba/Ca may result from the influence of varying degrees of Rayleigh fractionation during calcification. We find that these processes exert a smaller influence on Ba-incorporation into stylasterid coral skeletons, a result consistent with other aspects of their skeletal geochemistry. Stylasterid Ba/Ca ratios are therefore a powerful, novel archive of past changes in [Ba]SW, particularly when measured in combination with temperature sensitive tracers such as Li/Mg or Sr/Ca. Shore-based submersible operations, from 2006 to 2020, have allowed us to examine megabenthic assemblages along the island margin of Isla de Roatán from depths of about 150 to 750 m, including repeated observations of the same organisms. These dives were used to photo-document a diverse benthic assemblage and observe the health and condition of the sessile fauna in a well-explored but relatively undocumented area of the Mesoamerican Reef. Samples were collected by dip net, and some dives profiled the water column chemistry in the year 2011. The deep-sea coral assemblage observed off Roatan exhibits high abundance and diversity. The sessile habitat-forming taxa consist primarily of at least 20 different octocorals (e.g., Plexauridae, Primnoidae, Coralliidae, Isididae, and Ellisellidae) and 20 different sponges each (Demospongiae and Hexactinellida), with several known and unknown taxa of Zoantharia, Antipatharia (Bathypathesspp), and Scleractinia (e.g.,Desmophyllum pertusum,Dendrophyllia alternata,Madracis myriaster, and solitary taxa). Crinoidea were also abundant and diverse, represented by at least nine species. Epifaunal assemblages associated with corals include at least 24 macroinvertebrate species dominated byAsteroschema laeve(Ophiuroidea) andChirostylusspp. (Decapoda: Anomura). Repeated observations of a few large octocoral colonies over many years illustrate patterns of predation, recolonization, and epibiont host fidelity, including a 14-year record of decline in a plexaurid octocoral (putativelyParamuriceasp.) and loss of its resident ophiuroids. The shore-based submersible provides a practical and relatively inexpensive platform from which to study coral and sponge assemblages on a deep tropical island slope. The deep-sea coral gardens are likely to harbor new species and new discoveries if more samples can be acquired and made available for taxonomic research.

The stable isotope geochemistry of gorgonian octocoral skeletons facilitates detailed time series reconstructions of nutrient biogeochemistry. However, comparisons among reconstructions from different locations require realistic estimates of the uncertainty surrounding each measured geochemical value. Here, we determine quantitative uncertainties related to 1) standard skeletal pretreatment in preparation for stable isotopic analysis and 2) biological variability associated with a heterogeneous isotopic composition of the gorgonin skeleton. We found that the 5% HCl pretreatment required for the δ13C measurements does not significantly impact the δ15N values of the skeleton nor the reproducibility of the δ15N measurements. In contrast, while 5% HCl pretreatment significantly altered bulk δ13C values via removal of CaCO3, it did not change amino acid δ13C values in the organic skeleton. We found that the variance of repeat measurements of skeleton samples formed contemporaneously and homogenized skeleton for both δ13C and δ15N exceeded that of instrumental uncertainty of an acetanilide standard. This indicates that instrumental uncertainty underestimates the true precision of an isotopic measurement of the organic skeleton. Furthermore, measurements of contemporaneous skeleton around the circumference of an octocoral colony yielded variability exceeding that of homogenized skeleton. Based on these results, we find that 1) both δ13C and δ15N values can be measured simultaneously in pretreated skeleton, 2) growth bands should be homogenized prior to analysis, and 3) reported error should include uncertainty due to biological effects determined from repeat analysis of homogenized skeleton and not just instrument error to reduce false significant differences. Our results present an important protocol for processing proteinaceous octocoral skeletons and propagating uncertainty to more accurately reconstruct nutrient dynamics from proteinaceous deep-sea octocoral skeletons.

Cold-water corals are highly sensitive to changes in water temperature, as it is an important determinant of their distribution. In recent years, several heatwave events have occurred in multiple marine ecosystems , including the northeast Pacific Ocean. However, the effects of elevated ocean temperatures on cold-water corals are largely unknown. Determining the upper thermal limits of cold-water octocorals is an important first step in identifying if warm-water events pose a potential threat. Temperature data were obtained from loggers placed in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) at 20, 50, 100, and 200 m prior to the 2015–2016 El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event and used to characterize warm-water anomalies. Live colonies of the common gorgonian octocoral, Adelogorgia phyllosclera, were collected from the CINMS using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and transported to laboratory aquaria where they were maintained. A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the upper thermal limit of A. phyllosclera during a series of temperature assays using coenenchyme health scores, polyp activity, and estimated survival. Results of in-situ temperature analyses indicated that warm-water anomalies occurred frequently at 50 and 100 m, with most of these anomalies occurring during strong ENSO months. Based on the laboratory temperature assays, the upper thermal limit of A. phyllosclera was estimated to be 20 °C, with a time to effect of 96 hours. During the 2015–2016 ENSO event, this upper thermal limit was exceeded (21.1 °C) by warm-water anomalies at 20 m that lasted up to 14.1 hours, and approached (18.3 °C) by warm-water anomalies at 50 m that lasted up to 52.7 hours. Projections for future warm-water events suggest that the upper thermal limit of A. phyllosclera and other cold-water corals will likely be reached more frequently in the coming years. Thus, understanding the responses of cold-water corals to thermal stress will help predict the resilience of these species to future ocean warming.

Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) are recognized around the world as diverse and ecologically important habitats. In the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoMx), MCEs are rocky reefs with abundant black corals and octocorals, including the species Swiftia exserta. Surveys following the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in 2010 revealed significant injury to these and other species, the restoration of which requires an in-depth understanding of the biology, ecology, and genetic diversity of each species. To support a larger population connectivity study of impacted octocorals in the GoMx, this study combined sequences of mtMutS and nuclear 28S rDNA to confirm the identity of Swiftia sea fans in the GoMx, compare these markers for different polyp colors in the GoMx and Atlantic, and examine the phylogeny of the genus. Two mtMutS haplotypes were identified, one seemingly endemic to the northern GoMx. Compared to other North Atlantic Swiftia, S. exserta, the type of the genus was found to be extremely divergent and distinct from the two other Swiftia at both loci, with strong evidence of polyphyly in the genus. This information refines our understanding of the geographical distribution of injured coral and highlights how little is known about MCEs. Substantial taxonomic revisions may be needed for several taxa injured by the DWH oil spill.

Massive, long-lived deep-sea red tree corals (Primnoa pacifica) form a solid, layered axis comprised of calcite and gorgonin skeleton. They are abundant on the outer continental shelf and upper slope of the Northeast Pacific, providing habitat for fish and invertebrates. Yet, their large size and arborescent morphology makes them susceptible to disturbance from fishing activities. A better understanding of their growth patterns will facilitate in-situ estimates of population age structure and biomass. Here, we evaluated relationships between ages, growth rates, gross morphological characteristics, and banding patterns in 11 colonies collected from depths of ~141–335 m off the Alaskan coast. These corals ranged in age from 12 to 80 years old. They grew faster radially (0.33–0.74 mm year-1) and axially (2.41–6.39 cm year-1) than in previously measured older colonies, suggesting that growth in P. pacifica declines slowly with age, and that basal diameter and axial height eventually plateau. However, since coral morphology correlated with age in younger colonies (< century), we developed an in-situ age estimation technique for corals from the Northeast Pacific Ocean providing a non-invasive method for evaluating coral age without removing colonies from the population. Furthermore, we determined that annual bands provided the most accurate means for determining coral age in live-collected corals, relative to radiometric dating. Taken together, this work provides insight into P. pacifica growth patterns to inform coastal managers about the demographics of this ecologically important species. With this new ability to estimate the age of red tree corals in-situ, we can readily determine the age-class structure and consequently, the maturity status of thickets, using non-invasive video survey techniques when coupled with mensuration systems such as lasers or stereo-cameras. Enhanced surveys could identify which populations are most vulnerable to disturbance from human activities, and which should be highlighted for protection.

Deep-sea corals are important components of the benthos in the Gulf of Mexico, because they provide structural complexity to associated species of fish and invertebrates, and they serve as proxies for environmental conditions on millennial time scales. In the Gulf of Mexico, large colonies of the black coral Leiopathes glaberrima have been estimated to be over 2000 years old. As such, they are vulnerable to disturbance and slow to recover from adverse interactions with anchors, fishing gear, sedimentation, oil and gas extraction, and sampling. There is a growing need for non-lethal scientific collections and new information on the distribution, ecology, and population connectivity of L. glaberrima aggregations to support management decisions. A large number of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) surveys have been conducted in the Gulf of Mexico deep sea since 2008, including telepresence cruises that broadcast live seafloor images to shore. Visual observations from these surveys were collated and geo-referenced in a regional database with national museum records in order to: (1) map the distribution of L. glaberrima throughout the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, (2) predict the distribution of L. glaberrima based upon environmental correlates using maximum entropy (MaxEnt) modeling, and (3) correlate the size-class structure to the age-class structure using growth rate estimates from previous radiocarbon studies. We found that L . glaberrima has a broad distribution in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, with suitable habitat spanning depths between 200 and 1000 m that are concentrated near the Mississippi Canyon and along the West Florida Shelf. On average, L. glaberrima colonies had a height of 34.2 cm and a basal diameter of 0.42 cm, which correlates to an age of ~ 143 yrs. Future efforts should focus on calibrating the size and growth relationships of black corals and other corals, in order to add value to telepresence-based exploration and promote non-invasive sampling techniques.

Pathologies in over 400 octocoral and antipatharian colonies were quantified in the aftermath of the DWH oil discharge. Observations were made in September 2011 at water depths of 65–75 m in the Pinnacle Reef trend area offshore from Mississippi and Alabama, Gulf of Mexico, using a digital macro camera deployed from an ROV to examine the coral populations for injury at two principal sites: Alabama Alps Reef (AAR) and Roughtongue Reef (RTR). Taxa observed to exhibit injury included gorgonian octocorals Hypnogorgia pendula , Bebryce spp., Thesea nivea , and Swiftia exserta , the antipatharian Antipathes atlantica, and the sea whips Stichopathes sp., and Ellisella barbadensis . The most common type of injury was a biofilm with a clumped or flake-like appearance covering sea-fan branches. Extreme injuries were characterized by bare skeletons, broken and missing branches. Comparing the 2011 results to previous photo surveys of the same study sites between 1997 and 1999, we found significantly more occurrences of injury in 2011 among taxa with growth forms >0.5 m. We hypothesize that Tropical Storm Bonnie facilitated and accelerated the mixing process of dispersant-treated hydrocarbons into the water column, resulting in harmful contact with coral colonies at mesophotic depths. Analysis of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (tPAH) concentrations in sediments at AAR and RTR found levels elevated above pre-discharge values, but orders of magnitude below toxicity thresholds established for fauna in estuarine sediments. The tPAH concentrations measured in octocoral and echinoderm tissue samples from AAR and RTR were detectable (mean values ranged from 51 to 345 ppb); however, bioeffect thresholds do not currently exist with which to evaluate the potential harm these levels may cause. Our findings indicate that coral injuries observed in 2011 may have resulted from an acute, isolated event rather than ongoing natural processes.

The global decrease in seawater pH known as ocean acidification has important ecological consequences and is an imminent threat for numerous marine organisms. Even though the deep sea is generally considered to be a stable environment, it can be dynamic and vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances including increasing temperature, deoxygenation, ocean acidification and pollution. Lophelia pertusa is among the better-studied cold-water corals but was only recently documented along the US West Coast, growing in acidified conditions. In the present study, coral fragments were collected at ∼300 m depth along the southern California margin and kept in recirculating tanks simulating conditions normally found in the natural environment for this species. At the collection site, waters exhibited persistently low pH and aragonite saturation states (Ωarag) with average values for pH of 7.66 ± 0.01 and Ωarag of 0.81 ± 0.07. In the laboratory, fragments were grown for three weeks in “favorable” pH/Ωarag of 7.9/1.47 (aragonite saturated) and “unfavorable” pH/Ωarag of 7.6/0.84 (aragonite undersaturated) conditions. There was a highly significant treatment effect (P −1 and net dissolution of −0.010 ± 0.014% d-1 for unfavorable conditions. We did not find any treatment effect on feeding rates, which suggests that corals did not depress feeding in low pH/ Ωarag in an attempt to conserve energy. However, these results suggest that the suboptimal conditions for L. pertusa from the California margin could potentially threaten the persistence of this cold-water coral with negative consequences for the future stability of this already fragile ecosystem.

Deep-sea communities are becoming increasingly vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances, as fishing, hydrocarbon exploration and extraction, and mining activities extend into deeper water. Negative impacts from such activities were recently documented in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), where the Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused substantial damage to a deep-water octocoral community. Although a faunal checklist and numerous museum records are currently available for the entire GoM, local-scale diversity and assemblage structure of octocoral communities remains unknown, particularly in deep water. On a series of recent cruises (2008–2011) using remotely operated vehicles, 435 octocorals were collected from 33 deep-water sites (250–2500 m) in the northern GoM. To elucidate species boundaries, the extended mitochondrial barcode (COI+igr1+msh) was successfully amplified and sequenced for 422 of these specimens, yielding a total of 64 haplotypes representing at least 52 species. Further, at least 29% of the species collected were either previously not known to occur in the GoM (12 species) or represent new species (at least three species). A new species of deep-sea gorgonian, Isidella tentaculum, from 720–1050 m depths on Northeast Pacific seamount peaks, continental slopes, and shelf canyons is described and illustrated. The octocoral colonies were observed alive and in situ using a manned submersible and remotely operated vehicles. The new species is a large (up to 132 cm high), abundant, and conspicuous habitat former. It differs from its closest sister species (I. trichotoma, I. longiflora, I. lofotensis, and I. elongata) in size and stature, polyp size, and polyp arrangement. Distinctive characteristics of I. tentaculum include thornstar-shaped sclerites and large, closely-spaced, dimorphic polyps, never before reported in the family Isididae. Living colonies exhibit long basal zooids trailing from the trunk, similar in appearance to scleractinian ‘sweeper tentacles’. Large colonies have long tentacles (∼40 cm). The flabellum has whorls of 4–5 large (6–9 mm high, 2–3 mm diameter), closely packed (2–4 mm apart) autozooid polyps...

Natural structural biomaterials of marine origin including mollusc shells, sponges and corals not only provide an abundant source of novel bone and cartilage replacements but also inspire investigations to develop nano-sized biomimetic composites. This study presents a characterisation of the ultrastructure of the deep-sea Bamboo coral (Anthozoa: Gorgonacea: Isididae) and the nanostructure of some interstitial surfaces with respect to biomineralization phenomena. The skeletons of the corals examined exhibit jointed axes of large bony calcareous structures alternated with smaller proteinaceous nodes of gorgonin, giving the skeletal remains of the organism a digitated appearance, like terrestrial bamboo. To test the hypothesis that bamboo coral internodes exhibit bone-like mechanical and biochemical properties, structural and biochemical analyses of these natural biomineral composites and separation of proteinaceous components was performed. Due to its high potential for colonization with both human osteoblasts and osteoclasts, the organic matrix, composed of an acidic fibrillar protein framework, proved to be a very successful model for possible applications in tissue engineering. The material properties of the calcareous internodes correlate well with the material property charts for materials used in orthopedic surgery, though denser and stronger than bone. Results of the present study also clearly indicate the quinonproteinaceous nature of the gorgonin. On the basis of the high biomimetic potential of the results obtained, the use of Isididae corals as “living bone implants” as well as their biotechnological aquacultural cultivation seems to be promising for the near future. Die vorliegende Publikation stellt die Charakterisierung der Ultrastruktur der Tiefsee-Bambuskoralle (Anthozoa: Gorgonacea: Isididae) sowie der Nanostruktur innerer Oberflachen im Zusammenhang mit Biomineralisationsphanomenen vor. Die untersuchten Korallenskelette haben lange, verbundene knochenartige Kalkstrukturen, die sich mit kleineren, aus dem Protein Gorgonin bestehenden, Nodi abwechseln, was dem Ganzen ein segmentiertes Aussehen gibt, wie beim Bambus. Um die Annahme zu prufen, dass die Internodien der Bambuskoralle knochenahnliche mechanische und biochemische Eigenschaften aufweisen, wurden Struktur- und biochemische Untersuchungen an den naturlichen Biomineralkompositen vorgenommen sowie der Proteinanteil separiert und gesondert untersucht. Aufgrund der gezeigten guten Eignung als Substrat fur die Besiedlung mit humanen Osteoblasten und Osteoklasten ist diese organische Matrix, bestehend aus einem sauren fibrillaren Proteinnetzwerk, ein aussichtsreiches Modell fur Anwendungen im Tissue Engineering. Die Materialeigenschaften der kalkartigen Internodien korrelieren gut mit denen von Materialien wie sie in der orthopadischen Chirurgie Verwendung finden, sie sind sogar dichter und fester als Knochen. Die Resultate der vorliegenden Untersuchungen zeigen weiterhin klar die Natur des Grogonin als ein Chinoprotein. Angesichts des grosen biomimetischen Potentials, das sich aus den erhaltenen Ergebnissen ergibt, erscheint eine Verwendung der Isididae-Korallen als „lebende Knochenimplantate” und deren Zucht in biotechnologischer Aquakultur fur die nahe Zukunft aussichtsreich.

Sea-surface temperature (SST) fronts are integral to pelagic ecology in the North Pacific Ocean, so it is necessary to understand their character and distribution, and the way these features influence the behavior of endangered and highly migratory species. Here, telemetry data from sixteen satellite-tagged blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) and sea turtles (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas, and Lepidochelys olivacea) are employed to characterize ‘biologically relevant’ SST fronts off Baja California Sur. High residence times are used to identify presumed foraging areas, and SST gradients are calculated across advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) images of these regions. The resulting values are compared to classic definitions of SST fronts in the oceanographic literature. We find subtle changes in surface temperature (between 0.01 and 0.101C/km) across the foraging trajectories, near the lowest end of the oceanographic scale (between 0.03 and 0.31C/km), suggesting that edge-detection algorithms using gradient thresholds 40.101C/km may overlook pelagic habitats in tropical waters. We use this information to sensitize our edge-detection algorithm, and to identify persistent concentrations of subtle SST fronts in the Northeast Pacific Ocean between 2002 and 2004. The lower-gradient threshold increases the number of fronts detected, revealing more potential habitats in different places than we find with a higher-gradient threshold. This is the expected result, but it confirms that pelagic habitat can be overlooked, and that the temperature gradient parameter is an important one. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Baja California to Bering Sea (B2B) Marine Conservation Initiative seeks to establish a network of Marine Protected Areas within the Exclusive Economic Zones of the NAFTA countries- Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This network is designed to capture ecologically significant habitat for marine species of common conservation con- cern and pelagic regions of high productivity, with due consideration for the inter-annual sea surface temperature fluc- tuations of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Here, we present analytical methods that define pelagic habitat based upon the density of steep temperature gradients, or fronts, and we quantify their spatial and temporal persist- ence over a single ENSO cycle (1996-1999) to benefit marine conservation and marine management strategies. We find that less than 1% of the Northeast Pacific ocean exhibits a persistent ( > 8 mo/yr) concentration of tem- perature fronts (> .2km/km 2 ) within and between years. The Baja California Frontal System (BCFS) is the largest con- centration found within the multinational federal waters, between 0 and 300 km east of Baja California Sur. The BCFS appears more active under La Nina conditions, while the next largest persistent concentration, North Pacific Transition Zone, appears more active under El Nino conditions. We demonstrate habitat functions associated with the BCFS for blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), swordfish (Xiphias gladius), and striped marlin (Tetrapturus audax). We recommend management and protection for this pelagic "hotspot" to the Mexican government and the tri-national Commission for Environmental Cooperation.

Range overlap patterns were observed in a dataset of 10,446 expert-derived marine species distribution maps, including 8,295 coastal fishes, 1,212 invertebrates (crustaceans and molluscs), 820 reef-building corals, 50 seagrasses, and 69 mangroves. Distributions of tropical Indo-Pacific shore fishes revealed a concentration of species richness in the northern apex and central region of the Coral Triangle epicenter of marine biodiversity. This pattern was supported by distributions of invertebrates and habitat-forming primary producers. Habitat availability, heterogeneity, and sea surface temperatures were highly correlated with species richness across spatial grains ranging from 23,000 to 5,100,000 km(2) with and without correction for autocorrelation. The consistent retention of habitat variables in our predictive models supports the area of refuge hypothesis which posits reduced extinction rates in the Coral Triangle. This does not preclude support for a center of origin hypothesis that suggests increased speciation in the region may contribute to species richness. In addition, consistent retention of sea surface temperatures in models suggests that available kinetic energy may also be an important factor in shaping patterns of marine species richness. Kinetic energy may hasten rates of both extinction and speciation. The position of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool to the east of the Coral Triangle in central Oceania and a pattern of increasing species richness from this region into the central and northern parts of the Coral Triangle suggests peripheral speciation with enhanced survival in the cooler parts of the Coral Triangle that also have highly concentrated available habitat. These results indicate that conservation of habitat availability and heterogeneity is important to reduce extinction of marine species and that changes in sea surface temperatures may influence the evolutionary potential of the region.

The benthic habitats of Saba Bank (17 degrees 25'N, 63 degrees 30'W) are at risk from maritime traffic, especially oil tankers (e.g., anchoring). To mitigate this risk, information is needed on the biodiversity and location of habitats to develop a zone use plan. A rapid survey to document the biodiversity of macro-algae, sponges, corals and fishes was conducted. Here we report on the richness and condition of stony coral species at 18 select sites, and we test for the effects of bottom type, depth, and distance from platform edge. Species richness was visually assessed by roving scuba diver with voucher specimens of each species collected. Coral tissue was examined for bleaching and diseases. Saba Bank is a large submerged platform (approximately 2200 km(2)), average depth 30 m, located 4 km southwest of Saba Island in Netherlands Antilles, Caribbean Sea. Ships traveling to and from oil terminals on nearby St. Eustatius routinely anchor on the Bank, damaging benthic megafauna. Gorgonian octocorals are vulnerable to anchor damage, and they are common and conspicuous in shallow water (15-50 m) around the banks. This prompted a rapid assessment of octocoral habitat and diversity. The primary objectives were to estimate total species richness and to characterize habitats vis a vis gorgonians. Landsat imagery and multibeam bathymetry were employed to identify random sites for quantitative transects. A Seabotix LBV200L remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and SCUBA were used to collect and survey to 130 m. A total of 14 scuba dives and 3 ROV dives were completed in 10 days. During that time, 48 octocoral species were collected, including two likely undescribed species in the genera Pterogorgia and Lytreia. Gorgonian richness was exceptional, but not all species were collected, because the species accumulation curve remained steeply inclined after all surveys. Two shallow-water gorgonian habitat types were identified using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analyses: 1) a high diversity, high density fore-reef environment characterized by Eunicea spp., Gorgonia spp., and Pseudopterogorgia spp. and 2) a low diversity, low density plateau environment characterized by Pseudopterogorgia acerosa, Pterogorgia guadalupensis, and Gorgonia mariae. Biodiversity surveys were conducted on Saba Bank, Netherlands Antilles, to assess ichthyofaunal richness and to compare with published surveys of other Caribbean localities. The primary objective was to estimate the total species richness of the Saba Bank ichthyofauna. A variety of sampling techniques was utilized to survey the fish species of both the visually accessible megafauna and the camouflaged and small-sized species comprising the cryptic ichthyofauna. Based on results presented herein, the number of species known on Saba Bank is increased from 42 previously known species to 270 species. Expected species-accumulation curves demonstrate that the current estimate of species richness of fishes for Saba Bank under represents the actual richness, and our knowledge of the ichthyofauna has not plateaued. The total expected fish-species richness may be somewhere between 320 and 411 species. The Saba Bank ichthyofaunal assemblage is compared to fish assemblages found elsewhere in the Caribbean. Despite the absence of shallow or emergent shore habitats like mangroves, Saba Bank ranks as having the eighth highest ichthyofaunal richness of surveyed localities in the Greater Caribbean. Some degree of habitat heterogeneity was evident. Fore-reef, patch-reef, and lagoonal habitats were sampled. Fish assemblages were significantly different between habitats. Species richness was highest on the fore reef, but 11 species were found only at lagoonal sites. A comprehensive, annotated list of the fishes currently known to occur on Saba Bank, Netherland Antilles, is provided and color photographs of freshly collected specimens are presented for 165 of the listed species of Saba Bank fishes to facilitate identification and taxonomic comparison with similar taxa at other localities. Coloration of some species is shown for the first time. Preliminary analysis indicates that at least six undescribed new species were collected during the survey and these are indicated in the annotated list.

We define habitat-forming deep-sea corals as those families of octocorals, hexacorals, and stylasterids with species that live deeper than 200 m, with a majority of species exhibiting complex branching morphology and a sufficient size to provide substrata or refugia to associated species. We present 2,649 records (name, geoposition, depth, and data quality) from eleven institutions on eight habitatforming deep-sea coral families, including octocorals in the families Coralliidae, Isididae, Paragorgiidae and Primnoidae, hexacorals in the families Antipathidae, Oculinidae and Caryophylliidae, and stylasterids in the family Stylasteridae. The data are ranked according to record quality. We compare family range and distribution as predicted by historical records to the family extent as informed by recent collections aboard the National Oceanic of Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration 2002 Gulf of Alaska Seamount Expedition (GOASEX). We present a map of one of these families, the Primnoidae.

The conservation of deep-sea corals is of growing interest in the United States. A range of issues including biodiversity protection, conservation of seafloor habitats, and the role of deep-sea corals as essential fish habitat places greater significance on understanding the distributions of these corals and fishing activities. At the same time overfishing of some groundfish populations highlights the need for ecosystem-based management. Here we present records of habitat-forming deep-sea corals from the United States Pacific Fishery Management Council region that we analyze in relation to differential ecological impacts of demersal fishing gears. We use an ecological footprint approach combining groundfish catch by gear type with a previously published ecological severity ranking of fishing gears.

One of the critical information needs identified at the 2003 Deep-Sea Corals Workshop in Galway, Ireland, was to locate and chart deep-sea corals in order to develop reliable estimates of their distribution and abundance. While reports of deep-sea corals from the Gulf of Mexico date back to the 1860s, relatively little is known about their distribution or abundance. This paper attempts to provide a current assessment of the occurrence of Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata in water depths greater than 200 m in the Gulf of Mexico by summarizing records from (1) published material, (2) the 2003 National Museum of Natural History Taxonomic Database, (3) findings obtained during the September-October 2003 NOAA-OE RV Ronald H. Brown cruise RB-03-07-leg-2 in the northern Gulf, and (4) from various unpublished sources.

Hard-bottom ‘mesophotic’ reefs along the ‘40-fathom’ (73 m) shelf edge in the northern Gulf of Mexico were investigated for potential effects of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill from the Macondo well in April 2010. Alabama Alps Reef, Roughtongue Reef, and Yellowtail Reef were near the well, situated 60–88 m below floating oil discharged during the DWH spill for several weeks and subject to dispersant applications. In contrast, Coral Trees Reef and Madison Swanson South Reef were far from the DWH spill site and below the slick for less than a week or not at all, respectively. The reefs were surveyed by ROV in 2010, 2011, and 2014 and compared to similar surveys conducted one and two decades earlier. Large gorgonian octocorals were present at all sites in moderate abundance including Swiftia exserta, Hypnogorgia pendula, Thesea spp., and Placogorgia spp. The gorgonians were assessed for health and condition in a before-after-control-impact (BACI) research design using still images captured from ROV video transects. Injury was modeled as a categorical response to proximity and time using logistic regression. Condition of gorgonians at sites near Macondo well declined significantly post-spill. Before the spill, injury was observed for 4–9 % of large gorgonians. After the spill, injury was observed in 38–50 % of large gorgonians. Odds of injury for sites near Macondo were 10.8 times higher post-spill, but unchanged at far sites. The majority of marked injured colonies in 2011 declined further in condition by 2014. Marked healthy colonies generally remained healthy. Background stresses to corals, including fishing activity, fishing debris, and coral predation, were noted during surveys, but do not appear to account for the decline in condition at study sites near Macondo well.
