As energy storage systems are typically not installed with residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, any “excess” solar energy exceeding the house load remains unharvested or is exported to the grid. This paper introduces an approach towards a system design for improved PV self-consumption and self-sufficiency. As a result, a polyvalent heat pump, offering heating, cooling and domestic hot water, is considered alongside water storage tanks and batteries. Our method of system analysis begins with annual hourly thermal loads for heating and cooling a typical Australian house in Geelong, Victoria. These hourly heating and cooling loads are determined using Transient System Simulation (TRNSYS) software. The house’s annual hourly electricity consumption is analysed using smart meter data downloaded from the power supplier and PV generation data measured with a PV system controller. The results reveal that the proposed system could increase PV self-consumption and self-sufficiency to 41.96% and 86.34%, respectively, resulting in the annual imported energy being reduced by about 74%. The paper also provides sensitivity analyses for the hot and cold storage tank sizes, the coefficient of performance of the heat pump, solar PV and battery sizes. After establishing the limits of thermal storage size, a significant impact on self-efficiency can be realised through battery storage. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a polyvalent heat pump together with water storage tanks and, ultimately, batteries to increase PV self-consumption and self-sufficiency. Future work will concentrate on determining a best-fit approach to system sizing embedded within the TRNSYS simulation tool.

Experimental filmmakers are often celebrated for their radical engagement with both form and content. This article highlights how artists’ film and video have evolved in the past century when it comes to the representation of non-Western communities and their cultures. Employing close textual analysis, it compares Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), Len Lye’s Tusalava (1929) and Free Radicals (1958), and Nguyễn Trinh Thi’s Letters from Panduranga (2015), through a postcolonial lens. Foregrounding how Nguyễn is engaged in the nuances of postcolonial identity in a manner that is not replicated by Reiniger and Lye, it concludes that depictions of non-Western cultures in artists’ film and video have developed in the past century from spaces of exoticization to sites of inclusion and respect.

As the cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems decreases and incentives such as feed-in tariffs (FiTs) are offered, solar-PV homes are becoming popular. Furthermore, solar-PV homes integrated with hybrid or electric vehicles (EVs) are emerging as a paradigm for future homes. Given the fact that there exists a considerable price difference between grid electricity supply and FiTs, decision making of energy storage using batteries becomes an imperative topic. This research proposes an innovative and generic framework for the decision making of energy storage using batteries based on Smart Meter data, which incorporates the actual energy generation and consumption patterns of solar-PV homes. The proposed energy storage decision is based on a developed economic model, with the consideration of the electricity price from the grid, the FiTs, and the storage cost using batteries (i.e. the average price per kWh of battery capital cost and maintenance cost). Moreover, an intelligent algorithm is developed to calculate the electricity quantities, i.e. electricity supplied from the grid, fed into the grid and stored in a battery of a given capacity, based on the monitored data obtained from a Smart Meter over a year. The results reveal that at the present utility prices of $0.3/kWh and a feed-in-tariff of $0.10/kWh in the studied region, energy storage with a battery cost of $0.2/kWh or more is excessive and not economically feasible. However, with the increasing cost of electricity in recent years and constant changes in battery price, the outcomes could quickly reverse. This research contributes an innovative framework for battery storage decision-making of solar-PV homes, based on economic analysis and Smart Meter data.

An investigation of building performance through a comfort and operational quality standpoint is not too often discussed for Net-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB). It would seem important that predications and claims for reducing energy-use in buildings and the move towards NZEB does not compromise comfort in buildings. A high school in Essendon, Victoria (near Melbourne) Australia undertook a retrofitting process to improve its existing library from a functional as well as an environmental standpoint. In the process, several pre- and post-measurements were made of building performance. An advanced packaged unit mechanical system applies a demand control ventilation system with a specialised control that promises uniform air temperature throughout the volume of the conditioned space. This system utilises staged compressors with variable speed drive fans and results in minimal background noise. For the mechanical system to deliver as promised, the building envelope was air pressure sealed to an international standard and double glazed (from single glass) and zoned according to orientation and spatial function. Efficient LED lighting was also applied to a dimming control responsive to occupancy and daylight. This level of building improvement requires before and after measurement procedures to assure and prove a quality performance for a near NZEB. Various measurements of pressurisation, air exchange rates through tracer gas, air temperature stratification, IAQ, as well as a continuous and localised comfort survey measurement all contribute to a pre and post assessment of building performance. This paper discusses several measurement processes considered useful to characterize the performance of an HVAC system in a retrofitted library space. As a result of the building envelope quality, subsequent monitoring of the mechanical conditioning system showed that it could have been reduced to half its specified size. Furthermore, sub-metering of the space indicates that the attention given to the lighting and conditioning systems has reduced their impact, so that plug loads are beginning to dominate and require attention if net zero energy building is to be targeted.

The aluminum inner wing spars of F/A-18 Hornet aircraft may undergo stress corrosion cracking along the spar between the fasteners that secure carbon-fiber/epoxy composite skin to the wing. Inspection of the spar through the wing skin is required to avoid wing disassembly. The thickness of the skin varies between 9 and 21 mm (0.36-0.83 in) and fasteners may be either titanium or ferrous. Pulsed eddy currents (PECs), generated by a probe centered over the fastener, demonstrate the capability of detecting simulated cracks within spars with the wing skin present. Comparison of signals from separate pick-up coils, mounted to either side of the excitation coil, is used to detect differences in induced eddy current fields, which arise in the presence of cracks. To overcome variability in PEC signal response due to variation in: 1) skin thickness; 2) fastener material and size; and 3) centering over fasteners, a large calibration data set is acquired. Multidimensional scores from a modified principal components analysis (PCA) of the data are reduced to 1-D using a discriminant analysis method. Under inspection conditions, calibration PCA scores combined with discriminant analysis permit rapid real time go/no-go PEC detection of cracks in F/A-18 inner wing spar.

Stress corrosion cracks may develop between fasteners in the aluminum inner wing spars of F/A-18 Hornet aircraft. These fasteners secure carbon-fibre/epoxy composite wing skin, of nominal 13 mm thickness, to the spar. Inspection of the spar through the wing skin is required in order to avoid wing disassembly. Pulsed eddy currents, generated by a probe design that utilizes the ferrous fastener as a flux conduit, are demonstrated as having the capability of detecting simulated cracks within the spar with the wing skin present. Differentially connected pickup coils are used to sense differences in response due to asymmetries in induced eddy current fields arising in the presence of cracks. To overcome variability in PEC signal response due to variability in magnetic coupling to the fastener, a large measurement set was analyzed using Modified Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The modified PCA minimizes residual sum of squares to extract eigenfunction scores, which are used to detect the presence of cracks ending on one side of the fastener hole. The ability of the method to sense simulated cracks independent of confounding measurement parameters was demonstrated.

One way to dramatically improve the performance of the HR function—particularly for large, geographically dispersed organizations with multiple lines of business—is through shared services. Consolidating administrative and transactional processing activities within a dedicated ad-ministrative facility is not a new concept. Region-al shared services supporting finance, IT, travel and expatriate management exist throughout the world. But shared services for HR has mostly been limited to the larger, uniform countries, particularly the United States and the United Kingdom. This article argues that, when done correctly, shared services can deliver significant cost savings and result in better, more efficient services while freeing up resources for activities that enhance human capital. The article is based on research conducted around the world by Mercer Human Resource Consulting regarding HR shared service solutions in multicountry regions.

In these studies, the physical dependence liability of butorphanol, a mixed ‘agonist/antagonist” opioid analgesic, was compared to that of morphine. Male, Sprague—Dawley rats received i.c.v. infusions of saline (1 μl/h), or an equimolar dose of butorphanol or morphine (52.3 nmol/h) for 3 days. The physical dependence liabilities of these two compounds were then compared by assessing both behavioral withdrawal signs and weight loss following naloxone-precipitated withdrawal. Body weight loss was also evaluated following abrupt (cessation of infusion) withdrawal from butorphanol or morphine. In animals receiving i.c.v. infusions of butorphanol or morphine, naloxone administration (5 mg/kg s.c.) induced an equivalent degree of body weight loss compared to saline-treated animals. In addition, the ed 50 of naloxone to produce wet shakes, escape behavior, teeth chattering, urination and defecation was equivalent in rats receiving butorphanol or morphine. Infusions of butorphanol or morphine also produced an equivalent degree of weight loss in animals undergoing abrupt withdrawal. These results demonstrate then that a substantial degree of physical dependence had developed in rats which received a large dose of butorphanol.

This paper outlines an introductory course in software engineering undertaken by computing students at Deakin University. The course focuses on areas of that are often not emphasized in introductory software engineering. These areas include formal problem solving, management of software development, communication, and working in groups. The approach includes the application of concepts in a collaborative group setting. Enhancements to the course have been made over a number of semesters and evidence suggests that our overall approach is working. The skills acquired by students taking this course can be applied to later courses in software engineering, particularly the capstone project course, and to professional life.

This paper is concerned with the problem of searching large model databases. To date, most object recognition systems have concentrated on the problem of matching using simple searching algorithms. This is quite acceptable when the number of object models is small. However, in the future, general purpose computer vision systems will be required to recognize hundreds or perhaps thousands of objects and, in such circumstances, efficient searching algorithms will be needed. The problem of searching a large model database is one which must be addressed if future computer vision systems are to be at all effective. Butorphanol precipitated a withdrawal syndrome in rats receiving continuous intracerebroventricular infusions of morphine for three days. However, the potency of butorphanol to induce defecation, urination, teeth chattering and escape behavior was one to two orders of magnitude less on a molar basis than that of naloxone. Wet shake behavior, a prominent feature of naloxone precipitated withdrawal, was absent in morphine dependent animals challenged with butorphanol. These data indicate qualitative as well as quantitative differences in the withdrawal syndromes induced by butorphanol and naloxone.
