Abstract

To answer NASA’s call for a sensitive X-ray observatory in the 2030s, we present the High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) mission concept. HEX-P is designed to provide the required capabilities to explore current scientific questions and make new discoveries with a broadband X-ray observatory that simultaneously measures sources from 0.2 to 80 keV. HEX-P’s main scientific goals include: 1) understand the growth of supermassive black holes and how they drive galaxy evolution; 2) explore the lower mass populations of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and stellar-mass black holes in the nearby universe; 3) explain the physics of the mysterious corona, the luminous plasma close to the central engine of accreting compact objects that dominates cosmic X-ray emission; and 4) find the sources of the highest energy particles in the Galaxy. These goals motivate a sensitive, broadband X-ray observatory with imaging, spectroscopic, and timing capabilities, ensuring a versatile platform to serve a broad General Observer (GO) and Guest Investigator (GI) community. In this paper, we present an overview of these mission goals, which have been extensively discussed in a collection of more than a dozen papers that are part of this Research Topic volume. The proposed investigations will address key questions in all three science themes highlighted by Astro2020, including their associated priority areas. HEX-P will extend the capabilities of the most sensitive low- and high-energy X-ray satellites currently in orbit and will complement existing and planned high-energy, time-domain, and multi-messenger facilities in the next decade.

Abstract

The cosmic X-ray background (CXB) is dominated by the obscured and unobscured coronal light of active galactic nuclei (AGN). At energies below 10 keV, the CXB can be well explained by models taking into account the known AGN and the observed distribution of their obscuring, line-of-sight column densities, N _H,l.o.s . However, at energies around the Compton reflection hump (~30 keV), the models fall short of the data. This suggests the existence of a population of as yet undetected Compton-thick (CT) AGN ( N _H,l.o.s > 1.5 × 10 ^24 cm ^−2 ) whose X-ray spectra are dominated by the light that has been reprocessed by the obscuring material. Abstract

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) offer a unique opportunity to study the circum-nuclear environment in accreting supermassive black holes. The advent of NuSTAR has ushered in a new era for studying such systems by providing sensitive spectra > 10 keV. The observed spectral shape in this hard band is crucial for understanding the geometry of the obscurer, as well as for estimating the intrinsic accretion power. In this poster, I am presenting my work on the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 3982 with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. I fit several different physically-motivated obscurer models to the broadband X-ray spectra of the source. Each model represents a different circum-nuclear obscurer geometry and I also compare with empirical models of semi-infinite reflecting slabs. By using the Bayesian X-ray Analysis (BXA) platform, the full pre-defined parameter space of each model is explored to remove issues with local minima and reproduce parameter degeneracies precisely. By simulating HEX-P spectra from the best-fit for NGC 3982 (100ksper detector) withvaryingcovering factors, I illustratethe future potential for sensitive studiesofthe obscurer geometry amongstthe low-luminosityAGN population.

Abstract

Inspired by the excess soft X-ray emission recently detected in Green Pea galaxies, we model the soft X-ray emission (0.5 - 2.0 keV) of hot gas from star cluster winds. By combining individual star clusters, we estimate the soft X-ray emission expected from the typically unresolved diffuse hot gas in starburst galaxies, devoid of competing emission from e.g., AGN or other unresolved point sources. We use stellar models of sub-solar metallicities (0.02 $Z_{\odot}$ and 0.4 $Z_{\odot}$), and take into account supernova explosions for massive stars. For lower metallicities, we find that stellar winds do not contribute significantly ($\lesssim 3$ % of the mechanical energy) to the observed soft X-ray emission of normal star forming galaxies. For higher metallicities and possibly also for larger proportions of massive star clusters in the simulated starburst galaxies, we reproduce well the observed correlation between star formation rate and X-ray luminosity previously reported in the literature. However, we find that no combination of model assumptions is capable of reproducing the substantial soft X-ray emission observed from Green Pea galaxies, indicating that other emission mechanisms (i.e. unusually large quantities of High-/Low-Mass X-ray Binaries, Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources, a modified initial mass function, Intermediate-Mass Black Holes, or AGN) are more likely to be responsible for the X-ray excess., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 18 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Optically quiescent quasars (OQQs) represent a recently systematized class of infrared-luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that have galaxy-like optical continua. They may represent an interesting, brief phase in the AGN life cycle, e.g., either cocooned within high-covering-factor media or indicative of recent triggering, though their nature remains unclear. Here, we present the first targeted simultaneous X-ray observations of an OQQ, our previously identified prototype, SDSS J075139.06+402811.2 at z = 0.587. The source is significantly detected over 0.5–16 keV with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, unambiguously confirming the presence of current accretion activity. Spectral modeling yields an intrinsic luminosity L 2–10 keV ≈ 4.4 × 1043 erg s−1, well within the AGN regime, but underluminous relative to its infrared power. It is lightly obscured, with log N H [cm−2] ≈ 22.

Abstract

(Abridged) We present a detailed broadband X-ray spectrum of NGC 4258, with the goal of precisely measuring the coronal luminosity and accretion flow properties of the AGN, and track any possible variation across two decades of observations. We collect archival XMM-Newton, Chandra, Swift/BAT and NuSTAR spectroscopic observations spanning 15 years, and fit them with a suite of state of the art models, including a warped disk model which is suspected to provide the well known obscuration observed in the X-rays. We complement this information with archival results from the literature. Clear spectral variability is observed among the different epochs. The obscuring column density shows possibly periodic fluctuations on a timescale of 10 years, while the intrinsic luminosity displays a long term decrease of a factor of three in a time span of 15 years (from $L_{2-10~\text{keV}} \sim 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the early 2000s, to $L_{2-10~\text{keV}} \sim 3 \times 10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in 2016). The average absorption-corrected X-ray luminosity $L_{2-10~\text{keV}}$, combined with archival determinations of the bolometric luminosity, implies a bolometric correction $k_{\rm bol} \sim 20$, intriguingly typical for Seyferts powered by accretion through geometrically thin, radiatively efficient disks. Moreover, the X-ray photon index $\Gamma$ is consistent with the typical value of the broader AGN population. However, the accretion rate in Eddington units is very low, well within the expected RIAF regime. Abstract

Over recent years there has been mounting evidence that accreting supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and stellar mass black holes have similar observational signatures: thermal emission from the accretion disk, X-ray corona, and relativisitic jets. Further, there have been investigations into whether or not AGN have spectral states similar to that of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and what parallels can be drawn between the two using a hardness-intensity diagram (HID). To address whether AGN jets might be related to accretion states as in XRBs, we explore whether populations of radio-AGN classified according to their radio jet morphology (Fanaroff-Riley classes I and II; FR I and II), excitation class (HERG and LERG), and radio jet linear extent (compact to giant) occupy different and distinct regions of the AGN hardness-intensity diagram (total luminosity vs. hardness). We do this by cross correlating 15 catalogs of radio galaxies with the desired characteristics from the literature with XMM Newton and Swift X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) source catalogs. We calculate the luminosity and hardness from the X-ray and UV photometry, place the sources on the AGN hardness-intensity diagram, and search for separation of populations and analogies with the XRB spectral state HID. We find that (a) FR Is and IIs, (b) HERGs and LERGs, (c) FR I-LERGs and FR II-HERGs occupy distinct areas of the HID at a statistically significant level (p-value < 0.05) and no clear evidence for population distinction between the different radio jet linear extents. The separation between FR I-LERG and FR II-HERG populations is the strongest in this work. Our results indicate that radio-loud AGN occupy distinct areas of the HID depending on the morphology and excitation class, showing strong similarities to XRBs., 24 pages with 10 figures. Our motivation lies in the ability of such a sample to probe the true column density distribution in the local Universe—a vital boundary constraint for AGN evolutionary models. Specifically, we wish to derive a survey strategy capable of sampling AGN in a way that is more representative than X-ray flux-limited selection, especially in the extreme \(N_{\mathrm {H}}\) regime. 18. The Accretion and Obscured Growth of Supermassive Black Holes : First Constraints on the Local Heavily Obscured AGN Fraction with NuSTAR

Abstract

This thesis describes the application of state-of-the-art high-energy X-ray studies to the astronomical quest for understanding obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN). These AGN are supermassive black holes growing by accretion of matter located in the nuclei of galaxies. The material that feeds these black holes also obscures them from view, rendering them challenging to study. It is possible to study them by effectively'X-raying'galactic nuclei to peer through these obscuring veils. Beginning with the proof-of-concept application of novel X-ray Monte Carlo codes to the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR) spectrum of a known heavily obscured AGN, the thesis establishes the relevant parameters that characterise the AGN spectrum and central black hole growth rate. Next the largest sample of known heavily obscured AGN is compiled, finding the strength of a prominent iron spectral feature to weaken with AGN power. This is puzzling, and suggeststhat there may be more hidden AGN than previously thought. Finally by combining an all-sky infrared selection with NuSTAR follow-up, new heavily obscured AGN are identified. Obscuration emits infrared radiation, meaning that the infrared-selected AGN catalogue should be representative of the underlying AGN population. The absence of such representative catalogues has continually plagued cosmological studies, and the resultant obscured AGN fraction will be strongly constraining for AGN models.

Abstract

The relativistic jets created by some active galactic nuclei are important agents of AGN feedback. In spite of this, our understanding of what produces these jets is still incomplete. X-ray observations, which can probe the processes operating in the central regions in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole, the presumed jet launching point, are potentially particularly valuable in illuminating the jet formation process. Here, we present the hard X-ray NuSTAR observations of the radio-loud quasar 4C 74.26 in a joint analysis with quasi-simultaneous, soft X-ray Swift observations. Our spectral analysis reveals a high-energy cutoff of keV and confirms the presence of ionized reflection in the source. From the average spectrum we detect that the accretion disk is mildly recessed, with an inner radius of Rin = 4–180 Rg. However, no significant evolution of the inner radius is seen during the three months covered by our NuSTAR campaign. Abstract

We present the Chandra imaging and spectral analysis of NGC 4968, a nearby (z = 0.00986) Seyfert 2 galaxy. We discover extended (∼1 kpc) X-ray emission in the soft band (0.5–2 keV) that is neither coincident with the narrow line region nor the extended radio emission. Based on spectral modeling, it is linked to on-going star formation (∼2.6–4 M⊙ yr−1). The soft emission at circumnuclear scales (inner ∼400 pc) originates from hot gas, with kT ∼ 0.7 keV, while the most extended thermal emission is cooler (kT ∼ 0.3 keV). We refine previous measurements of the extreme Fe Kα equivalent width in this source (), which suggests the central engine is completely embedded within Compton-thick levels of obscuration. Using physically motivated models fit to the Chandra spectrum, we derive a Compton-thick column density (NH > 1.25 × 1024 cm−2) and an intrinsic hard (2–10 keV) X-ray luminosity of ∼3–8 × 1042 erg s−1 (depending on the presumed geometry of the obscurer), which is over two orders of magnitude larger than that observed. The large Fe Kα EW suggests a spherical covering geometry, which could be confirmed with X-ray measurements above 10 keV. NGC 4968 is similar to other active galaxies that exhibit extreme Fe Kα EWs (i.e., >2 keV) in that they also contain on-going star formation. This work supports the idea that gas associated with nuclear star formation may increase the covering factor of the enshrouding gas and play a role in obscuring active galactic nuclei. Abstract

Heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) offer a unique opportunity to study the circumnuclear environment in accreting supermassive black holes (SMBH). Study of the obscuration in AGN is crucial for comprehension of complexity of the AGN population as most of the AGN in the Universe are obscured (Comastri, 2004). It can also help us to answer some of the major questions regarding the galaxy evolution and its coevolution with the central black holes. The food of black holes is likely what is obscuring our view, thus studying the circumnuclear region can also help us understand the fuelling process as well as the growth of the bulk of the AGN population, occurring likely during heavily obscured phases of rapid accretion (Fabian et al., 2000). A new observatory in the hard X-ray band, NuSTAR introduced a new era for studying such systems as the observed spectral shape in the >10 keV band is crucial for understanding the geometrical and physical properties of the obscurer, as well as for the estimation of the intrinsic properties of the system such as the intrinsic X-ray luminosity or the Eddington ratio. In this work I present a detailed study of the a deeply buried accreting SMBH in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 3982 with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observatories. I fit several different models of the obscurer believed to be located within ~1-10 parsecs from the SMBH to the broadband X-ray spectrum of the source. Each model represents a different circumnuclear obscurer geometry but I also compare the results with empirical model assuming an unphysical semi-infinite reflecting slab. By using the Bayesian X-ray Analysis (BXA) platform that connects X-ray fitting package Xspec with nested sampling, the full pre-defined parameter space of each model is explored to remove issues with local minima and reproduce parameter degeneracies precisely. All models find the column density of the obscurer above 1024cm-2confirming the Compton-thick nature of the source, and the intrinsic X-ray luminosity in the 2-10 keV band log L = 41.4 erg/s for the best-performing complex multi-reflector clumpy-geometry model, UxClumpy. As the studied AGN is intrinsically a low-luminosity source and heavily obscured, regarding the data quality, geometrical properties of the obscurer are poorly constrained and all the models are giving consistent results. However, by simulating High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P, an upcoming NASA probe class mission) spectra from the best-fit for NGC 3982 in a complex multi-reflector clumpy geometry I illustrate the future potential for sensitive studies of the obscurer geometry even amongst the low-luminosity AGN population.
