Little is known about children's long-term acceptance of social robots; whether different types of users exist; and what reasons children have not to use a robot. Moreover, the literature is inconclusive about how the measurement of children's robot acceptance (i.e., self-report or observational) affects the findings. We relied on both self-report and observational data from a six-wave panel study among 321 children aged eight to nine, who were given a Cozmo robot to play with at home over the course of 8 weeks. Children's robot acceptance decreased over time, with the strongest drop after 2–4 weeks. Children rarely rejected the robot (i.e., they did not stop using it already prior to actual adoption). They rather discontinued its use after initial adoption or alternated between using and not using the robot. The competition of other toys and lacking motivation to play with Cozmo emerged as the strongest reasons for not using the robot. Self-report measures captured patterns of robot acceptance well but seemed suboptimal for precise assessments of robot use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using Hofstede's cultural dimension of masculinity/femininity, this quantitative content analysis investigated the coverage of virginity loss (i.e., occurrence, tone, and association with negative consequences) and pregnancy (i.e., occurrence, tone, and negative consequence of sex) in 2,496 feature stories from all issues of three U.S. and three Dutch teen girl magazines from 2006 to 2008. Stories about virginity loss and pregnancy occurred equally often in the U.S. and Dutch magazines. Pregnancy was attached with a negative tone in both the United States and Dutch coverage. Virginity loss, however, was portrayed with a positive tone more often in the Dutch coverage than in the U.S. coverage. In addition, pregnancy was depicted as a negative consequence of sex more often in the U.S. coverage than in the Dutch coverage. Implications are discussed in terms of differences in adolescent sexual socialization in the United States and the Netherlands.

This study investigated perceptions of love across the lifespan using Sternberg's triangular theory of love, which distinguishes between passion, intimacy, and commitment. The study aimed to (a) investigate the psychometric properties of the short Triangular Love Scale (TLS-short) in adolescents and adults (see Appendix), and (b) track age and gender differences in the three love components of the TLS-short in a sample of 12- to 88-year-olds (N = 2791). The three-factor structure of the TLS-short was confirmed in both the adolescent and adult sample. Adolescents (12-17 years) reported lower levels of all love components compared to young adults (18-30 years). Late adults (50+) reported lower levels of passion and intimacy, but similar levels of commitment compared to young (18-30 years) and middle adults (30-50 years). Gender differences in the perceptions of all three love components were present but less sizeable than suggested in popular accounts and earlier academic research.
