The current framework for managing construction waste, guided by European Union regulations, calls for an integrated waste management system. However, the reuse of old plaster waste, particularly from deteriorated facades, remains underexplored. This study investigates the potential of repurposing old plaster waste as a substitute for aggregates and cement in mortars, with the aim of promoting environmental sustainability and resource efficiency. Three mortar mixes were analyzed: a control mix, a mix with 45% waste replacing aggregates, and a mix with 10% waste replacing cement. Results show that replacing 45% of aggregates with plaster waste led to a 30% reduction in flexural strength, while the 10% cement replacement increased flexural strength by 6%. Compressive strength dropped by 27% and 38% for cement and aggregate replacements, respectively. Despite these reductions, the waste replacement remained within acceptable limits for structural integrity. Further microscopic analysis revealed that the incomplete integration of portlandite particles from the waste contributed to non-uniform bonding and crystal formation, weakening the mortar's structure. This research demonstrates the feasibility of reusing old plaster waste, offering a novel approach to reducing construction waste and promoting a circular economy. (1) Background: The long-term survival of an endodontically treated tooth depends on a successful root canal treatment as well as an adequate definitive coronal restoration. This study aimed to evaluate the strength of endodontically treated premolars with mesial–occlusal–distal (MOD) cavity preparation restored with different direct coronal restoration materials but from the same manufacturer against fracture. (2) Methods: sixty intact premolars were selected and placed into five groups (n = 12): G1—intact teeth, G2—endodontic treatment and unrestored MOD cavities, G3—endodontic treatment and MOD cavities restored with Tetric PowerFlow and Tetric EvoCeram, G4—endodontic treatment and MOD cavities restored with Multicore Flow and Tetric EvoCeram, and G5—endodontic treatment and MOD cavities restored with Multicore Flow. The specimens were subjected to an axial compression load at a speed of 1.6 mm/min and optically inspected before and after with a stereomicroscope. For each premolars group, the following data were recorded: the compression resistance, the compressive strength, and the maximum force supported. The microstructure of the samples after the compression test was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). (3) Results: statistical analysis (ANOVA and Tukey test) showed that there was a statistically significant difference between G1 and the other groups. Even though there was no statistically significant difference between the restored groups, a better mechanical behavior was registered within the G3. (4) Conclusions: this in vitro study indicated that none of the materials used can lead to a higher or at least similar fracture resistance as the intact teeth. Interproximal enamel reduction (IER) is a minimally invasive therapeutic procedure commonly used in orthodontics to address both functional and aesthetic issues. Its mechanical effects on enamel surfaces induce the formation of grooves, furrows, scratches, depressions, and valleys. The aim of this study was to assess the enamel surface roughness resulting after the application of currently available methods for interproximal reduction. Ninety freshly extracted human teeth were divided into six groups and subjected to the stripping procedure, using a different method for each group (diamond burs, abrasive strips of 90 μm, 60 μm, 40 μm, 15 μm, and abrasive discs). A single individual performed stripping according to the manufacturer's recommendations, involving interproximal reduction on one tooth's proximal face and leaving the other side untreated. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of the enamel surfaces was carried out using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), obtaining 2D and volumetric 3D images of the enamel surface microstructure and nanostructure. The study found that diamond burs and abrasive strips of 60 μm and 90 μm increased enamel roughness due to intense de-structuring effects, while the 40 μm polisher had a gentler effect and 15 μm abrasive strips and polishing discs preserved enamel surface quality and removed natural wear traces. The aim of this study was to obtain three experimental resin-based cements containing GO and HA-Ag for posterior restorations. The samples (S0, S1, and S2) shared the same polymer matrix (BisGMA, TEGDMA) and powder mixture (bioglass (La2O3 and Sr-Zr), quartz, GO, and HA-Ag), with different percentages of graphene oxide (0%, 0.1%, 0.2% GO) and silver-doped hydroxyapatite (10%, 9.9%, 9.8% HA-Ag). The physical–chemical properties (water absorption, degree of conversion), mechanical properties (DTS, CS, FS), structural properties (SEM, AFM), and antibacterial properties (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Escherichia coli) were investigated. The results showed that the mechanical properties, except for the diametral tensile test, increased with the rise in the %GO. After 28 days, water absorption increased with the rise in the %GO. The surface structure of the samples did not show major changes after water absorption for 28 days. The antibacterial effects varied depending on the samples and bacterial strains tested. After increasing the %GO and decreasing the %HA-Ag, we observed a more pronounced antibacterial effect. Kaolinite is able to assure the high binding affinity of the filler particles of raw ceramic bodies. It acts as a matrix that strongly holds the other constituents' particles in a compact structure. The slurry samples were characterized by XRD, mineralogical microscopy and SEM coupled with an EDX elemental analysis. The slurry collected from the ceramic tile production wastewaters had a significant amount of kaolinite (36%), mostly fine particles of 3 µm, less surrounding quartz (37%) and mullite (19%) particles of 5–100 µm in diameter and traces of lepidocrocite (8%). It is a dense paste with a relative moisture of 25%. The square bar of the slurry as received, pressed at a load of 350 N, had a flexural strength of 0.61 MPa. Increasing the moisture to 33% using regular water, followed by mechanical attrition at 2000 rpm for 5 min, resulted in a porous bar with a flexural strength of 0.09 MPa; by increasing the attrition speed to 6000 rpm, the microstructural homogenization was improved and the flexural strength was about 0.68 MPa. It seems that regular water does not assure an optimal moisture for the kaolinite matrix conditioning. Therefore, we used technological water at pH = 10, a moisture of 33% and attrition at 6000 rpm for 5 min, and the bar pressed at a load of 350 N had a flexural strength of 1.17 MPa. The results demonstrate that the bar moistened with technological water and an attrition regime assured a proper conditioning for the kaolinite matrix, achieving the optimal binding of the quartz and mullite particles under the pressing load. Bars with the optimal mixture were pressed at several loads, including 70, 140, 210 and 350 N, and the flexural strength was progressively increased from 0.56 MPa to 1.17 MPa. SEM fractography coupled with atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that the optimal moisture facilitated a proper kaolinite particle disposal regarding the quartz and mullite filler particles, and the progressive load assured the strong binding of the finest kaolinite platelets onto their surface. Short glass fibers are generally used in posterior dental restorations to enhance the mechanical properties and improve the material microstructure. Two resin-based composites (S0 and SF) were formulated and characterized to investigate the influence of zirconium in their characteristics and properties. The organic part of the investigated materials was the same (BisGMA, TEGDMA, and a photochemical polymerization system), and in the inorganic part, besides quart, glassA, and hydroxylapatite with Zn, sample S0 contained strontium glass with zirconium and sample SF contained fiber powder of chopped zirconium. The samples were characterized by the degree of conversion (DC), mechanical properties, water sorption (WS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) before and after the WS test, and antimicrobial properties. The results obtained were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's statistical tests. Both samples had a high DC. Regarding the mechanical properties, both samples were very similar, except DTS, which was higher for the composite without fibers. After 14 days, the WS value of the SF sample was lower than that of the S0 sample. Water caused significant changes in the topography of the SF sample, but thanks to its antimicrobial properties and the diffusion phenomenon, SF had a more pronounced antimicrobial effect. This study shows that the addition of appropriate amounts of Sr-Zr-glass powder gives the material in which it is added similar properties to material containing chopped zirconium glass fiber powder. According to the antimicrobial test results, resin composites containing experimental zirconia fillings can be considered in future in vitro clinical studies for posterior reconstructions with significantly improved mechanical properties. Interproximal enamel reduction, also known as stripping, is a common orthodontic procedure that reduces the mesiodistal diameter of teeth, allowing for a balance of available space in dental arches. The aim of this study was to assess the enamel surface microhardness resulting from the application of currently available methods for interproximal reduction. Forty-two extracted human permanent teeth were divided into six different groups, each subjected to a therapeutic stripping procedure using various methods (i.e., diamond burs, abrasive strips of 90 μm, 60 μm, 40 μm, and 15 μm, and abrasive discs). Stripping was performed by a single individual in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations for the various systems used. One of the proximal faces of the tooth underwent IPR, while the other side remained untreated for control. The hardness of the enamel surface was measured using a Vickers hardness tester. The control group achieved the hardest enamel surface (354.4 ± 41.02 HV1), while the lowest was observed for enamel surfaces treated with 90 µm abrasive strips (213.7 ± 118.6). The only statistically significant difference was identified in comparisons between the values measured for the control group and those obtained after stripping with diamond burs (p = 0.0159). Enamel microhardness varied depending on the stripping instrument used, but no statistically significant differences were found (p > 0.05). Optimal microhardness values, close to those of healthy enamel, were achieved after mechanical treatment with 15 µm abrasive strips and abrasive discs. Dental caries is an avoidable and complex condition impacting billions of individuals worldwide, posing a specific concern among younger generations, despite the progress of oral hygiene products. This deterioration occurs due to the acid demineralization of tooth enamel, leading to the loss of minerals from the enamel subsurface. The remineralisation of early enamel carious lesions could prevent the cavitation of teeth. The enamel protein amelogenin constitutes 90% of the total enamel matrix protein and plays a key role in the bio mineralisation process. The aim of this study is to investigate the self-assembly microstructure and reticulation behaviour of a newly developed bioactive hydrogel with leucine-rich amelogenin peptide (LRAP) intended for enamel remineralisation. SEM, AFM, UV-VIS, and FTIR analyses emphasize the ability of peptides to promote cell adhesion and the treatment of early carious lesions. Ceramic slurry wastes have a significant hazardous potential when dumped. Their recycling as raw material is a sustainable approach for the development of nature-friendly applications. The microstructure and mechanical properties play a key role in the success of this sustainable recycling. Ceramic slurry samples resulting from the wall and floor tiles production facility were analyzed. The mineral composition was investigated by XRD combined with mineralogical microscopy and the microstructure was investigated by SEM microscopy coupled with EDX spectroscopy and elemental mapping. The ceramic slurry contains: quartz, kaolinite, mullite and small amounts of lepidocrocite. Quartz and mullite particles have sizes in the range of 5–100 μm and kaolinite has small particles of around 1 to 30 μm. Iron hydroxide crystallized as lepidocrocite is finely distributed among kaolinite aggregates. It makes the slurry unable to be reused in the technological process because of the glaze staining risk, but it does not affect the material cohesion. Thus, the cylindrical samples were prepared at progressive compactions rates as follows: 1808.55; 1853.46; 1930.79 and 2181.24 kg/m3 and dried. Thereafter, were subjected to a compression test with a lower compression strength of 0.75 MPa for lower density and a higher strength of 1.36 MPa for the higher density. Thus, slurry compaction enhances the kaolinite binding ability. The Young's Modulus slightly decreases with the compaction increasing due to local microstructure rigidizing. This proves the binding ability of kaolinite, which properly embeds quartz and mullite particles into a coherent and resistant structure. The fractography analysis reveals that fracture starts on the internal pores at low compaction rates and throughout the kaolinite layer in the samples with high compactness. The observed properties indicate that the investigated ceramic slurry is proper as a clay-based binder for sustainable ecological buildings, avoiding the exploitation of new clay quarries. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling is one of the most important environmental issues, assuring a cleaner environment and reducing the carbon footprint of technological products, taking into account the quantities used year by year. The recycling possibilities depend on the quality of the collected material and on the targeted product. Current research aims to increase recycling quantities by putting together recycled PET in an innovative way as a filler for the additive manufactured metallic lattice structure. Starting from the structures mentioned above, a new range of composite materials was created: IPC (interpenetrating phase composites), materials with a complex architecture in which a solid phase, the reinforcement, is uniquely combined with the other phase, heated to the temperature of melting. The lattice structure was modeled by the intersection of two rings using Solid Works, which generates the lattice structure, which was further produced by an additive manufacturing technique from 316L stainless steel. The compressive strength shows low values for recycled PET, of about 26 MPa, while the stainless-steel lattice structure has about 47 MPa. Recycled PET molding into the lattice structure increases its compressive strength at 53 MPa. The Young's moduli are influenced by the recycled PET reinforcement by an increase from about 1400 MPa for the bare lattice structure to about 1750 MPa for the reinforced structure. This sustains the idea that recycled PET improves the composite elastic behavior due to its superior Young's modulus of about 1570 MPa, acting synergically with the stainless-steel lattice structure. The morphology was investigated with SEM microscopy, revealing the binding ability of recycled PET to the 316L surface, assuring a coherent composite. The failure was also investigated using SEM microscopy, revealing that the microstructural unevenness may act as a local tensor, which promotes the interfacial failure within local de-laminations that weakens the composite, which finally breaks. Ferrous particles are usually found in atmospheric particulate matters due to the cars chassis oxidation. These particles are able forming conglomerates with the other mineral particles. Thus, the investigated carwash slurry (CS) reveals a high mineralized composition dominated by Quartz, Calcite and clay minerals with significant amount of iron hydroxides. We found some unusual bigger particles of ferrous conglomerate (FC) into the CS sample. XRD and mineralogical microscopy (MOM) reveal that FC sample is formed by a nanostructured mixture of 56 wt.% Calcite and 44 wt.% Goethite. SEM images and EDS spectra reveal submicron particles within the FC structure with a dense mixture of Ca and Fe. FTIR investigation reveal strong absorption bands for goethite and very weak ones for Lepidocrocite within the FC sample. The results indicates that the conglomerate weas formed on the car chassis rust by wet partial dissolution of calcite that locally forms Ca(OH)2 which further is re-crystallized as calcite due to the CO2 from the combustion gases. Fine crystallites of iron hydroxides are embedded into the re-crystallized calcite. In conclusion, the magnetic selection is recommended for the ferrous conglomerate particles removal from CS to be used as natural coverage for of urban dump sites rehabilitation. This work presents the effect of monovalent (Ag+, Na+), divalent (Ca2+, Cd2+), and trivalent (La3+) metal ion doping and annealing temperature (500, 800, and 1200 °C) on the structure, morphology, and magnetic properties of MnFe2O4/SiO2 ceramic nanocomposites synthesized via sol–gel method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirms the embedding of undoped and doped MnFe2O4 nanoparticles in the SiO2 matrix at all annealing temperatures. In all cases, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms the formation of MnFe2O4. In the case of undoped, di-, and trivalent metal-ion-doped gels annealed at 1200 °C, three crystalline phases (cristobalite, quartz, and tridymite) belonging to the SiO2 matrix are observed. Doping with mono- and trivalent ions enhances the nanocomposite's structure by forming single-phase MnFe2O4 at low annealing temperatures (500 and 800 °C), while doping with divalent ions and high annealing temperature (1200 °C) results in additional crystalline phases. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) reveals spherical ferrite particles coated by an amorphous layer. The AFM images showed spherical particles formed due to the thermal treatment. The structural parameters calculated by XRD (crystallite size, crystallinity, lattice constant, unit cell volume, hopping length, density, and porosity) and AFM (particle size, powder surface area, and thickness of coating layer), as well as the magnetic parameters (saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, coercivity, and anisotropy constant), are contingent on the doping ion and annealing temperature. By doping, the saturation magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy decrease for gels annealed at 800 °C, but increase for gels annealed at 1200 °C, while the remanent magnetization and coercivity decrease by doping at both annealing temperatures (800 and 1200 °C). The goal of the current study was to determine the mechanical proprieties of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and the improved compound, the graphene-based PMMA, with Zn and Ag and to compare the results. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of the samples before and after the mechanical test was conducted. The compression behavior, flexural properties, tensile strength, and shape of the samples were all investigated and compared between the variants of PMMA. Commercially available polymethylmethacrylate was used (Orthocryl®—Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany) with the salt and pepper technique according to the manufacturer's instructions to produce 20 samples for each mechanical trial with standard cylinders (4 mm diameter × 8 mm length) for compression, parallelepipedal prisms for flexing (2 mm × 2 mm × 25 mm) and flat samples for traction. There was no statistical difference in the mechanical proprieties of the samples evaluated, although there were values that could suggest significance. The graphene-based PMMA demonstrated good mechanical proprieties, like the commercially available PMMA, and appears promising for future clinical use based on its multiple advantages. CoFe2O4 is a promising functional material for various applications. The impact of doping with different cations (Ag+, Na+, Ca2+, Cd2+, and La3+) on the structural, thermal, kinetics, morphological, surface, and magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles synthesized via the sol-gel method and calcined at 400, 700 and 1000 °C is investigated. The thermal behavior of reactants during the synthesis process reveals the formation of metallic succinates up to 200 °C and their decomposition into metal oxides that further react and form the ferrites. The rate constant of succinates' decomposition into ferrites calculated using the isotherms at 150, 200, 250, and 300 °C decrease with increasing temperature and depend on the doping cation. By calcination at low temperatures, single-phase ferrites with low crystallinity were observed, while at 1000 °C, the well-crystallized ferrites were accompanied by crystalline phases of the silica matrix (cristobalite and quartz). The atomic force microscopy images reveal spherical ferrite particles covered by an amorphous phase, the particle size, powder surface area, and coating thickness contingent on the doping ion and calcination temperature. The structural parameters estimated via X-ray diffraction (crystallite size, relative crystallinity, lattice parameter, unit cell volume, hopping length, density) and the magnetic parameters (saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, magnetic moment per formula unit, coercivity, and anisotropy constant) depend on the doping ion and calcination temperature. Due to the ions in its structure, that have a variety of important roles in bone metabolism, forsterite (FS, Mg2SiO4) is a promising candidate for orthopedic and dental applications. This paper studies forsterite synthesized through two methods, namely sol-gel (FSsg) and precipitation (FSpp), based on a thermodynamic approach. Therefore, the precursor gel and precipitate were analyzed through thermal gravimetric (TG), differential thermal gravimetric (DTG) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis. The FSsg and FSpp powders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD reveals that the synthesized forsterite is of high crystallinity. As is evidenced by AFM, the average size of the nanoparticles is around 40 nm for FSsg and 30 nm for FSpp. The potential reaction mechanisms for the two synthesis routes were also established. Dacian civilization flourished on the actual territory of Romania during the Late Iron Age and had its peak from the first century BC to the first century AD. They had intensive relations with Hellenistic and Roman civilizations. Therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the origin of some widely spread artifacts discovered in the Dacian archeological sites. The present research is focused on two bronze artifacts (a bronze coin and a mirror fragment) found in the Alun-Piatra Rosie site and a silver coin found in the Ardeu site. Artifacts were investigated with nondestructive methods such as SEM-EDX for microstructural and elemental characterization, and the crystalline phases were investigated using XRD. Bronze coin proves to be an Istrian issue having an elemental composition of 75.0% Cu, 20.8% Sn, and 4.1% Pb, which corresponds to a structure of Cu grains mixed with Cu5.6Sn grains. The bronze mirror fragment has an elemental composition of 52.3% Cu and 47.7% Sn, which corresponds to a structure containing grains of Cu6Sn5 mixed with grains of Cu41Sn11. It has a smooth surface that was investigated with AFM microscopy, which evidences a Ra roughness of 51 nm for the patina surface and 33.7 nm for the clean metal surface, proving the high quality of the original mirror luster of the artifact. The silver coin was identified as a Radulesti–Hunedoara type meaning that it was produced in local Dacian metallurgic workshops. It has an elemental composition of 63.1% Ag, 25.3% Sn, 7.8% Cu, and small traces of P and Fe, which corresponds to a structure of Ag grains and Ag3Sn grains. Silver coins show that Dacians uses Sn as alloying element in their metallurgic workshops. Istrian bronze coin proves to be typical for Hellenistic or Roman bronze type with Sn content no more than 25% Sn. The bronze mirror fragment has an unusual composition that might be a result of al local metal charge elaboration with several Hellenistic and Roman bronze pieces as raw material and an extra Sn addition during the melting process. This material facilitates the polishing properties of the active surface that has a very low roughness even after 2000 years of ground resting and adherent oxides patina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Curcumin (CCM) has beneficial effects on human health due to its pharmacological activities, which have a protective role against many diseases. Whey protein concentrate (WPC) is a product from the milk industry that is often used to improve and stabilize different foods. It helps curcumin improve its water solubility, poor bioavailability, low stability, and efficacy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to highlight the surface topography of adsorbed films of pure curcumin, pure whey protein concentrate, and their CCM-WPC complex. The obtained results show that individual nanoparticles, NPs, were mobilized into the aqueous dispersion and successfully adsorbed onto the glass slides as thin films. Their NPs shape is rounded, and their diameter differs on each sample, namely about 30 nm for CCM, around 55 nm for WPC, and about 40 nm for the CCM-WPC complex. It proves that both CCM and WPC molecules generate a complex that embeds them in a compact structure. The surface roughness was also monitored, and pure CCM produces the smoothest and uniform film, meanwhile, the presence of WPC makes several pores in the film surface which increases the roughness value. The obtained results provide useful evidence for the application of whey protein as an effective carrier of curcumin, a bioactive polyphenol compound.
