The standard approach to realize a spin liquid state is through magnetically frustrated states, relying on ingredients such as the lattice geometry, dimensionality, and magnetic interaction type of the spins. While Heisenberg spins on a pyrochlore lattice with only antiferromagnetic nearest neighbors interactions are theoretically proven disordered, spins in real systems generally include longer-range interactions. The spatial correlations at longer distances typically stabilize a long-range order rather than enhancing a spin liquid state. Both states can, however, be destroyed by short-range static correlations introduced by chemical disorder. Here, using disorder-free specimens with a clear long-range antiferromagnetic order, we refine the spin structure of the Heisenberg spinel ZnFe2O4 through neutron magnetic diffraction. The unique wave vector (1, 0, 1/2) leads to a spin structure that can be viewed as alternatively stacked ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic tetrahedra in a three-dimensional checkerboard form. Stable coexistence of these opposing types of clusters is enabled by the bipartite breathing-pyrochlore crystal structure, leading to a second order phase transition at 10 K. The diffraction intensity of ZnFe2O4 is an exact complement to the inelastic scattering intensity of several chromate spinel systems which are regarded as model classical spin liquids. Our results challenge this attribution, and suggest instead of the six-spin ring-mode, spin excitations in chromate spinels are closely related to the (1, 0, 1/2) type of spin order and the four-spin ferromagnetic cluster locally at one tetrahedron., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Twisted heterostructures of two-dimensional crystals can create a moir\'{e} landscape, which can change the properties of it's parent crystals. However, the reproducibility of manual stacking is far from perfect. Here, the alternated stacking of post-transition metal monochalcogenides and transition metal dichalcogenides in misfit layer compound crystals is used as a moir\'{e} generator. Using X-ray diffraction, the presence of twins with a well-defined small twist angle between them is shown. Due to the twist, the surface electrical potential from the induced ferroelectricity is observed using scanning probe microscopy and electron microscopy.

Time-reversal (T) symmetry breaking is a fundamental physics concept underpinning a broad science and technology area, including topological magnets, axion physics, dissipationless Hall currents, or spintronic memories. A best known conventional model of macroscopic T-symmetry breaking is a ferromagnetic order of itinerant Bloch electrons with an isotropic spin interaction in momentum space. Anisotropic electron interactions, on the other hand, have been a domain of correlated quantum phases, such as the T-invariant nematics or unconventional superconductors. Here we report discovery of a broken-T phase of itinerant Bloch electrons with an unconventional anisotropic spin-momentum interaction, whose staggered nature leads to the formation of two ferromagnetic-like valleys in the momentum space with opposite spin splittings. We describe qualitatively the effect by deriving a non-relativistic single-particle Hamiltonian model. Next, we identify the unconventional staggered spin-momentum interaction by first-principles electronic structure calculations in a four-sublattice antiferromagnet Mn5Si3 with a collinear checkerboard magnetic order. We show that the staggered spin-momentum interaction is set by nonrelativistic spin-symmetries which were previously omitted in relativistic physics classifications of spin interactions and topological quasiparticles. Our measurements of a spontaneous Hall effect in epilayers of antiferromagnetic Mn5Si3 with vanishing magnetization are consistent with our theory predictions. Spin ices are exotic phases of matter characterized by frustrated spins obeying local ice rules, in analogy with the electric dipoles in water ice. In two dimensions, one can similarly define ice rules for in-plane Ising-like spins arranged on a kagome lattice. These ice rules require each triangle plaquette to have a single monopole, and can lead to various unique orders and excitations. Using experimental and theoretical approaches including magnetometry, thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we establish HoAgGe as a crystalline (i.e. non-artificial) system that realizes the kagome spin ice state. The system features a variety of partially and fully ordered states and a sequence of field-induced phases at low temperatures, all consistent with the kagome ice rule., Comment: 4 figures and 2 tables, with the figures slightly different from the formal online version

Incommensurate (IC) charge-order (CO) and spin density wave (SDW) order in electron doped SrMn1-xWxO3-{\delta} (x= 0.08 to 0.1875) have been studied using neutron diffraction.The study highlights the drastic effect of electron doping on the emergence of magnetic ground states which were not revealed in manganites before. With increasing (x) the crystal structure changes from simple tetragonal (P4/mmm) to an IC-CO modulated structure with super space-group P2/m({\alpha}\b{eta}0)00 having ab-planer ferro order of 3dx2-y2 orbitals in a compressed tetragonal (c 0.1, a different C-type AFM order with propagation vector k = (1/2,0,1/2), coexists with an incommensurate SDW order with k = (0.12, 0.38, 1/2).For compositions with 0.1625 < x < 0.175, while the structural features of CDW and orbital-order remain qualitatively the same, the magnetic interaction gets modified and results another SDW phase with single incommensurate propagation vector k = (0.07, 0.43, 1/2). A detail magnetic and structural phase-diagram, as a function of W substitution for SrMn1-xWxO3 (0.08 < x < 0.4) is presented.

Bootstrapping is a useful technique for estimating the uncertainty of a predictor, for example, confidence intervals for prediction. It is typically used on small to moderate sized datasets, due to its high computation cost. This work describes a highly scalable online bootstrapping strategy, implemented inside Vowpal Wabbit, that is several times faster than traditional strategies. Our experiments indicate that, in addition to providing a black box-like method for estimating uncertainty, our implementation of online bootstrapping may also help to train models with better prediction performance due to model averaging., Comment: 5 pages, appeared at Big Learning Workshop at Neural Information Processing Systems 2013

Incommensurate crystal structures of spin ladder series Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (x=3, 7, 11, 12.2) were characterized by powder neutron scattering method and refined using the superspace group Xmmm(00{\gamma})ss0 (equivalent to superspace group Fmmm(0,0,1+{\gamma})ss0); X stands for non-standard centering (0,0,0,0), (0,1/2,1/2,1/2), (1/2,1/2,0,0), (1/2,0,1/2,1/2)) with a modulated structure model. The Ca doping effects on the lattice parameters, atomic displacement, Cu-O distances, Cu-O bond angles and Cu bond valence sum were characterized. The refined results show that the CuO4 planar units in both chain and ladder sublattices become closer to square shape with an increase of Ca doping. The Cu bond valence sum calculation provided new evidence for the charge transfer from the chains to ladders (approximately 0.16 holes per Cu from x=0 to 12.2). The charge transfer was attributed to two different mechanisms: (a) the Cu-O bond distance shrinkage on the ladder; (b) increase of the interaction between two sublattices, resulting in Cu-O bonding between the chains and ladders. The spiral magnetic structure and underlying spin lattice of BiMnFe2O6 are investigated by low-temperature neutron powder diffraction and density functional theory band structure calculations. In spite of the random distribution of the Mn3+ and Fe3+ cations, this compound undergoes a transition into an incommensurate antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN ~ 220 K. The magnetic structure is characterized by the propagation vector k=[0,beta,0] with beta ~ 0.14 and the P22_12_11'(0 \beta 0)0s0s magnetic superspace symmetry. It comprises antiferromagnetic helixes propagating along the b-axis. The magnetic moments lie in the ac plane and rotate about pi*(1+beta) ~ 204.8 deg angle between the adjacent magnetic atoms along b. The spiral magnetic structure arises from the peculiar frustrated arrangement of exchange couplings in the ab plane. The antiferromagnetic coupling along the c-axis leads to the cancellation of electric polarization, and results in the lack of ferroelectricity in BiMnFe2O6., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 8 tables

The topological structures of the Internet and the Web have received considerable attention. However, there has been little research on the topological properties of individual web sites. In this paper, we consider whether web sites (as opposed to the entire Web) exhibit structural similarities. To do so, we exhaustively crawled 18 web sites as diverse as governmental departments, commercial companies and university departments in different countries. These web sites consisted of as little as a few thousand pages to millions of pages. Statistical analysis of these 18 sites revealed that the internal link structure of the web sites are significantly different when measured with first and second-order topological properties, i.e. properties based on the connectivity of an individual or a pairs of nodes. However, examination of a third-order topological property that consider the connectivity between three nodes that form a triangle, revealed a strong correspondence across web sites, suggestive of an invariant. Comparison with the Web, the AS Internet, and a citation network, showed that this third-order property is not shared across other types of networks. Users of online dating sites are facing information overload that requires them to manually construct queries and browse huge amount of matching user profiles. This becomes even more problematic for multimedia profiles. Although matchmaking is frequently cited as a typical application for recommender systems, there is a surprising lack of work published in this area. In this paper we describe a recommender system we implemented and perform a quantitative comparison of two collaborative filtering (CF) and two global algorithms. Results show that collaborative filtering recommenders significantly outperform global algorithms that are currently used by dating sites. A blind experiment with real users also confirmed that users prefer CF based recommendations to global popularity recommendations. This paper examines the difference and similarities between the two on-line computer science citation databases DBLP and CiteSeer. The database entries in DBLP are inserted manually while the CiteSeer entries are obtained autonomously via a crawl of the Web and automatic processing of user submissions. CiteSeer's autonomous citation database can be considered a form of self-selected on-line survey. It is important to understand the limitations of such databases, particularly when citation information is used to assess the performance of authors, institutions and funding bodies. We show that the CiteSeer database contains considerably fewer single author papers. This bias can be modeled by an exponential process with intuitive explanation. The model permits us to predict that the DBLP database covers approximately 24% of the entire literature of Computer Science. CiteSeer is also biased against low-cited papers. Despite their difference, both databases exhibit similar and significantly different citation distributions compared with previous analysis of the Physics community.
