Abstract

Plastic degradation by biological systems with re-utilization of the by-products can be the future solution to the global threat of plastic waste accumulation. We report that the saliva of Galleria mellonella larvae (wax worms) is capable of oxidizing and depolymerizing polyethylene (PE), one of the most produced and sturdy polyolefin-derived plastics. This effect is achieved after a few hours’ exposure at room temperature and physiological conditions (neutral pH). The wax worm saliva can indeed overcome the bottleneck step in PE biodegradation, that is the initial oxidation step. Within the saliva, we identified two enzymes that can reproduce the same effect. This is the first report of enzymes with this capability, opening up the way to new ground-breaking solutions for plastic waste management through bio-recycling/up-cycling.

Abstract

In this work, the capability of new materials PILC’s synthesized from montmorillonite as support for catalysts based on Rh or Sn promoted Rh has been studied. Rh based catalysts were synthesized by hydrogen reduction at atmospheric pressure for a cationic organo-metallic rhodium complex. The influence of the supports in the incorporation of the active phase has been studied. The catalysts have been tested in the hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde in the vapor phase at atmospheric pressure, analyzing the effect of some working parameters in the formation of the reaction products, namely the temperature of metal reduction, the reaction temperature, and the addition of Sn as a promoter. For comparative purposes, natural clay and commercial silica have also been used as supports. Both the natural clays and the PILC’s materials have resulted adequate supports for the Rh catalysts. The addition of Sn as a promoter modifies the selectivity leading to higher conversion towards crotyl alcohol.

Abstract

The most advanced applications of clays depend crucially on their hydration state and swelling is probably the most important feature of expandable 2:1 layered silicate. Sodium Taeniolite, Na-TAE, a swelling trioctahedral fluormica, has been synthesized and studied using thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and infrared and solid state NMR spectroscopies. The results indicated the formation of a swelling 2:1 phyllosilicate with actual layer charge lower than the nominal one. Herein, a new heteroatom distribution and more accurate composition could be deduced.

Abstract

Human activity is increasing CO2 atmospheric concentration contributing to global warming. In this situation CO2 reversible capture and storage, what it is known as carbon capture and conversion (CCC), can be part of the solution. In this context, searching for a suitable material for this application is necessary. The present study was carried out to investigate the CO2 adsorption of amino-functionalized graphene oxide on its surface. Amino-functionalized graphene oxide samples were prepared by different methods with two kind of molecules: 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) and polyethylenimine (PEI). A characterization study of the prepared samples was done with thermal analysis, thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To evaluate the CO2 adsorption of the samples CO2 adsorption isotherms were done. These isotherms correspond with a type I and shows an improvement in CO2 chemisorption regarding graphene oxide. 24. Tobacco Mosaic Virus-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles, a Wool-Ball-like Nanostructure for Drug Delivery

Abstract

The design of versatile tools to improve cell targeting and drug delivery in medicine has become increasingly pertinent to nanobiotechnology. Biological and inorganic nanocarrier drug delivery systems are being explored, showing advantages and disadvantages in terms of cell targeting and specificity, cell internalization, efficient payload delivery, and safety profiles. Combining the properties of a biological coating on top of an inorganic nanocarrier, we hypothesize that this hybrid system would improve nanoparticle–cell interactions, resulting in enhanced cell targeting and uptake properties compared to the bare inorganic nanocarrier. Toward this goal, we engineered a hierarchical assembly featuring the functionalization of cargo-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) as a biological coating. The MSNP functions as a delivery system because the porous structure enables high therapeutic payload capacity, and TMV serves as a biocompatible coating to enhance cell interactions. The resulting MSNP@TMV nanohybrids have a wool-ball-like appearance and demonstrate enhanced cell uptake, hence cargo delivery properties. The MSNP@TMV have potential for medical applications such as drug delivery, contrast agent imaging, and immunotherapy.

33. Synthesis of porous clay heterostructures from high charge mica-type aluminosilicates

Abstract

High charge micas are ideal materials to be used as porous solid acids because of their extraordinarily high content of framework aluminium atoms and their thermal stability. However, all efforts to create porosity in these materials have led to a disordered porous structure, since the full process is compromised by the highly layer attractive forces and hence by the incorporation stage of the porous wall precursors between the clay layers. Thermally stable and ordered mesoporous materials were synthesized for the first time from those swelling brittle micas through a surfactant templating approach. The interlayer space was firstly pre-expanded using alkylammonium cations, giving rise to a homogeneous organic–inorganic hybrid structure, which directs the polymerization step of the silica source. A regular porous structure in the supermicropore to the small mesopore range (15–25 Å) together with an exclusive acidity was found after sample calcination. The extraordinary content of framework aluminium is responsible for the large number of acid sites, both in the rare medium and strongly acidic regions. The thermal stability of the new synthesised materials was also tested.

34. Study of Sorbents Prepared from Clays and CaO or Ca(OH)2 for SO2 Removal at Low Temperature

Abstract

The preparation, characterization, and use in a desulfurization process at low temperature of sorbents obtained by a mixture of different clays (smectite, attapulgite, and sepiolite) and CaO or Ca(OH)2 are described. Different ways of preparation, dry or wet, and different calcium compound/clay ratios, times, or temperatures were tested. The surface area of the obtained sorbents depends greatly on the preparation conditions. X-ray analysis shows that the clay acts as a mere support of the calcium base in the experimental conditions tested. The reactivity toward SO2 is related to the dispersion of the basic centers of the sorbents evaluated by chemisorption. Calcium utilization (expressed as moles of SO2 per moles of Ca in percent) of the 1/10 Ca(OH)2/smectite sorbent prepared by a dry mixture was 40%. Calcium utilization of the 1/10 CaO/smectite sorbent prepared by a wet mixture at room temperature was 70%, being 17% the value found with commercial Ca(OH)2 under the same desulfurization conditions. Taking into account that smectite is very common in Spain and that the ways of preparation are easy and cheap, these sorbents are good alternatives to the conventional sorbents used in dry or semidry desulfurization processes.

Abstract

Abstract: Glasses of bismuth borosilicates, aluminoborates and aluminoborosilicates were prepared by melt quenching and characterized by density measurements, 11B and 27Al Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Increase in silica concentration increases density without any change in the fraction of tetrahedral borons (N4) in the borosilicate glass network, whereas increase in alumina concentration in aluminoborate and aluminoborosilicate glasses drastically reduces density and N4. 27Al MAS NMR measurements revealed that Al ions are in four, five and six fold coordination with oxygen and about 47% of these are in [5]Al and [6]Al structural units, the concentration of the latter species decreases by adding silica in the glass network. Higher cation field strength of Bi3+ generates very large concentration of non-bridging oxygens, which act as charge balancing centers in the glass network. DSC measurements found that alumina and silica incorporation in bismuth borate glasses do not produce any systematic changes in the glass transition temperature but the tendency towards crystallization decreases steadily.
