Certain periodical cicadas exhibit life cycles with durations of 13 or 17 years, and it is now generally accepted that such large prime numbers arise evolutionarily to avoid synchrony with predators. Less well explored is the question of how, in the face of intrinsic biological and environmental noise, insects within a brood emerge together in large successive swarms from underground during springtime warming. Here we consider the decision-making process of underground cicada nymphs experiencing random but spatially-correlated thermal microclimates like those in nature. Introducing short-range communication between insects leads to a model of consensus building that maps on to the statistical physics of an Ising model with a quenched, spatially correlated random magnetic field and annealed site dilution, which displays the kinds of collective swarms seen in nature., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The collapse of a catenoidal soap film when the rings supporting it are moved beyond a critical separation is a classic problem in interface motion in which there is a balance between surface tension and the inertia of the surrounding air, with film viscosity playing only a minor role. Recently [Goldstein, et al., Phys. Rev. E 104, 035105 (2021)], we introduced a variant of this problem in which the catenoid is bisected by a glass plate located in a plane of symmetry perpendicular to the rings, producing two identical hemicatenoids, each with a surface Plateau border (SPB) on the glass plate. Beyond the critical ring separation, the hemicatenoids collapse in a manner qualitatively similar to the bulk problem, but their motion is governed by the frictional forces arising from viscous dissipation in the SPBs. Here we present numerical studies of a model that includes classical friction laws for SPB motion on wet surfaces and show consistency with our experimental measurements of the temporal evolution of this process. The growing concerns over desertification have spurred research into technologies aimed at acquiring water from non-traditional sources such as dew, fog, and water vapor. Some of the most promising developments have focused on improving designs to collect water from fog. However, the absence of a shared framework to predict, measure and compare the water collection efficiencies of new prototypes is becoming a major obstacle to progress in the field. We address this problem by providing a general theory to design efficient fog collectors as well as a concrete experimental protocol to furnish our theory with all the necessary parameters to quantify the effective water collection efficiency. We show in particular that multi-layer collectors are required for high fog collection efficiency and that all efficient designs are found within a narrow range of mesh porosity. A classical problem in fluid mechanics is the motion of an axisymmetric vortex sheet evolving under the action of surface tension, surrounded by an inviscid fluid. Lagrangian descriptions of these dynamics are well-known, involving complex nonlocal expressions for the radial and longitudinal velocities in terms of elliptic integrals. Here we use these prior results to arrive at a remarkably compact and exact Eulerian evolution equation for the sheet radius $r(z,t)$ in an explicit flux form associated with the conservation of enclosed volume. The flux appears as an integral involving the pairwise mutual induction formula for vortex loop pairs first derived by Helmholtz and Maxwell. We show how the well-known linear stability results for cylindrical vortex sheets in the presence of surface tension and streaming flows [A.M. Sterling and C.A. Sleicher, $J.~Fluid~Mech.$ ${\bf 68}$, 477 (1975)] can be obtained directly from this formulation. Furthermore, the inviscid limit of the empirical model of Eggers and Dupont [$J.~Fluid~Mech.$ $\textbf{262}$ 205 (1994); $SIAM~J.~Appl.~Math.$ ${\bf 60}$, 1997 (2000)], which has served as the basis for understanding singularity formation in droplet pinchoff, is derived within the present formalism as the leading order term in an asymptotic analysis for long slender axisymmetric vortex sheets, and should provide the starting point for a rigorous analysis of singularity formation., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

It is now well established that nearby beating pairs of eukaryotic flagella or cilia typically synchronize in phase. A substantial body of evidence supports the hypothesis that hydrodynamic coupling between the active filaments, combined with waveform compliance, provides a robust mechanism for synchrony. This elastohydrodynamic mechanism has been incorporated into `bead-spring' models in which flagella are represented by microspheres tethered by radial springs as internal forces drive them about orbits. While these low-dimensional models reproduce the phenomenon of synchrony, their parameters are not readily relatable to those of flagella. More realistic models which reflect the elasticity of the axonemes and active force generation take the form of fourth-order nonlinear PDEs. While computational studies have shown synchrony, the effects of hydrodynamic coupling between nearby filaments governed by such models have been theoretically examined only in the regime of interflagellar distances $d$ large compared to flagellar length $L$. Yet, in many biological situations $d/L \ll 1$. Here, we first present an asymptotic analysis of the hydrodynamic coupling between two filaments in the regime $d/L \ll 1$, and find that the form of the coupling is independent of the details of the internal forces that govern the motion of the filaments. The analysis is like the localized induction approximation for vortex filament motion, extended to the case of mutual induction. To understand how the coupling mechanism leads to synchrony of extended objects, we introduce a heuristic model of flagellar beating, a single fourth-order nonlinear PDE whose form is derived from symmetry considerations, the physics of elasticity, and the overdamped nature of the dynamics. We show that highly twisted minimal strips can undergo a non-singular transition, unlike the singular transitions seen in the M\"obius strip and the catenoid. If the strip is non-orientable this transition is topologically frustrated, and the resulting surface contains a helical defect. Through a controlled analytic approximation the system can be mapped onto a scalar $\phi^4$ theory on a non-orientable line bundle over the circle, where the defect becomes a topologically protected kink soliton or domain wall, thus establishing their existence in minimal surfaces. Recent work has shown that a M\"obius strip soap film rendered unstable by deforming its frame changes topology to that of a disk through a 'neck-pinching' boundary singularity. This behavior is unlike that of the catenoid, which transitions to two disks through a bulk singularity. It is not yet understood whether the type of singularity is generally a consequence of the surface topology, nor how this dependence could arise from an equation of motion for the surface. To address these questions we investigate experimentally, computationally, and theoretically the route to singularities of soap films with different topologies, including a family of punctured Klein bottles. We show that the location of singularities (bulk or boundary) may depend on the path of the boundary deformation. In the unstable regime the driving force for soap-film motion is the mean curvature. Thus, the narrowest part of the neck, associated with the shortest nontrivial closed geodesic of the surface, has the highest curvature and is the fastest-moving. Just before onset of the instability there exists on the stable surface a shortest closed geodesic, which is the initial condition for evolution of the neck's geodesics, all of which have the same topological relationship to the frame. We make the plausible conjectures that if the initial geodesic is linked to the boundary then the singularity will occur at the boundary, whereas if the two are unlinked initially then the singularity will occur in the bulk. Groups of beating flagella or cilia often synchronize so that neighboring filaments have identical frequencies and phases. A prime example is provided by the unicellular biflagellate Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which typically displays synchronous in-phase beating in a low-Reynolds number version of breaststroke swimming. We report here the discovery that ptx1, a flagellar dominance mutant of C. reinhardtii, can exhibit synchronization in precise antiphase, as in the freestyle swimming stroke. Long-duration high-speed imaging shows that ptx1 flagella switch stochastically between in-phase and antiphase states, and that the latter has a distinct waveform and significantly higher frequency, both of which are strikingly similar to those found during phase slips that stochastically interrupt in-phase beating of the wildtype. In this fluid dynamics video, we demonstrate the microscale mixing enhancement of passive tracer particles in suspensions of swimming microalgae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. These biflagellated, single-celled eukaryotes (10 micron diameter) swim with a "breaststroke" pulling motion of their flagella at speeds of about 100 microns/s and exhibit heterogeneous trajectory shapes. Fluorescent tracer particles (2 micron diameter) allowed us to quantify the enhanced mixing caused by the swimmers, which is relevant to suspension feeding and biogenic mixing. Without swimmers present, tracer particles diffuse slowly due solely to Brownian motion. As the swimmer concentration is increased, the probability density functions (PDFs) of tracer displacements develop strong exponential tails, and the Gaussian core broadens. High-speed imaging (500 Hz) of tracer-swimmer interactions demonstrates the importance of flagellar beating in creating oscillatory flows that exceed Brownian motion out to about 5 cell radii from the swimmers. An analytical method is developed describing the approach to a finite-time singularity associated with collapse of a narrow fluid layer in an unstable Hele-Shaw flow. Under the separation of time scales near a bifurcation point, a long-wavelength mode entrains higher-frequency modes, as described by a version of Hill's equation. In the slaved dynamics, the initial-value problem is solved explicitly, yielding the time and analytical structure of a singularity which is associated with the motion of zeroes in the complex plane.
