Dermoid cysts of the floor of the mouth are rare lesions presumed to be caused by entrapment of germinal epithelium during the closure of the mandibular and hyoid branchial arches. They usually manifest as nonpainful swelling. Developmental cysts are histopathologically classified into 3 types: epidermoid, dermoid, and teratoid. An ultrasound scan is commonly used as the first choice to investigate a lesion. Other imaging methods, such as the US, CT, and MRI, are used for differential diagnosis. This article's aim is to present the imaging findings of 4 cases of sublingual dermoid cysts and to review the literature.

Abstract Background Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is often accompanied by anxiety. Dental anxiety is common in society and negatively affects the application of patients to the dentist. Aims We aimed to examine the presence of dental anxiety in FM patients and to compare it with the non-FM controls. The aim was also extended to examine the relationship between FM disease severity and dental anxiety. Methods Sixty-three patients diagnosed with FM and 50 age- and sex-matched non-FM controls were included. All participants were asked to answer the Modified dental anxiety scale (MDAS) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD anxiety and HAD depression, respectively). FM patients were also asked to answer the Fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ). Results There were 18 (28.57%) participants in the FM group with an MDAS score of ≥ 16 (anxiety), and 3 (6%) participants in the control group. All 10 participants with MDAS score ≥ 19 (dental phobic) were in the FM group (15.87%). There was a moderate positive correlation between FIQ score and MDAS Score. There were significant positive correlations between the MDAS Score and HAD anxiety and HAD depression scores. Conclusions The frequency of dental anxiety may be high in FM patients and disease activity may negatively affect dental anxiety. This is the first study to examine the presence of dental anxiety in fibromyalgia syndrome and its relationship with disease severity. This study draws attention to the presence of dental anxiety, which will negatively affect dental interventions and follow-ups in Fibromyalgia, which is quite common.

The pneumonia virus of chickenpox is now known to cause scattered calcified foci in the lungs, however to our knowledge, recent literature has not discussed calcification in the salivary glands. A 15-year-old boy consulted the department of radiology because of a swelling on the right side of the submandibular area. Radiological assessment included an ultrasonography and computerized tomography scan of the neck area, which demonstrated intraparenchymal amorph calcification, with approximately 13 mm diameter in the right submandibular gland. General condition and oral intake was good without distress in the patient, and hence he was discharged on the seventh day of follow-up treatment.

Fibrous dysplasia is a benign fibroosseous bone dysplasia that can involve single (monostotic) or multiple (polyostotic) bones. Monostotic form is more frequent in the jaws. It is termed as craniofacial fibrous dysplasia, when it involves, though rarely, adjacent craniofacial bones. A 16-year-old girl consulted for a painless swelling in the right posterior mandible for two years. Panoramic radiography revealed ground-glass ill-defined lesions in the three different regions of the maxilla and mandible. Axial CT scan (bone window) showed multiple lesions involving skull base and facial bones. Despite lesions in the skull base, the patient had no abnormal neurological findings. The lesion was diagnosed as fibrous dysplasia based on radiological and histopathological examination. In this paper, CT findings and differential diagnosis of CFD are discussed. CT is a useful imaging technique for CFD cases.

An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is composed of abnormal communications between arteries and veins without the normal intervening capillary bed. AVM of the head and neck is a rare vascular anomaly. We present here an unusual case of AVM with the size of 4x3 cm at the left posterior palatal area. Incisionel biopsy revealed AVM. Resection of the lesion following angiography was suggested to the patient however, he refused the treatment. The patient was considered to be under control. AVM should always be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of palatal swellings.

Background/purpose: Shovel-shaped incisors are teeth with thick marginal ridges surrounding a deep lingual fossa. They have a higher prevalance in Asian racial groups. In this study, we aimed to find the incidence of shovel shaped incisors in Turkish population, distribution of them according to teeth and sex, and to show the relationship between SSI and the other morphological changes. Materials and methods: The study was carried out on 3960 women and men. Shovel-shaped incisors were detected on 437 individuals. Photographic images of the palatinal surfaces were obtained and after the examiantion of high resolution digitalized images by two observers, teeth of 400 individuals were diagnosed as shovel-shaped. Teeth were classified as “Trace shovel” (type I), “semi shovel” (type II), and “shovel-shaped” (type III) according to the Hrdlicka's scale. the results were analyzed with Chi-square (χ2) test. Results: Prevalence was 10.1%. Shovel-shaped incisors were found in both central incisors and lateral incisors of 273 individuals (68.5%), solely in lateral incisors of 119 individuals (29.5%), and in both maxillary central and lateral incisors and canines of 8 individuals (2%). Shovel-shaped incisors were present in the teeth of 228 women and in the teeth of 172 men (P = 0.015). The majority of the inisors were showing Type II severity (in the central-lateral incisor group 127 individuals, in the lateral group 71 individuals (P= 0.013). Thirty-four accompanied dental anomalies were dens in dente, Talon cusp, peg-shaped laterals, microdonty, and cingulum hypertrophy. was 34. Dens in dente constituted the majority (n = 23, ratio = 67.6%). Conclusion: The incidence of shovel-shaped incisors was 10.1% in our study group; SSI affected lateral incisors more than central incisors; the number of women reflecting SSI was higher than men; and the majority of individuals had Type II (semi-shovel) severity.

Reflections of the invention of W.C. Roentgen reached Turkey in a very short period of time. In the field of medicine, Captain Dr. Esat Feyzi and Captain Dr. Rifat Osman were the first who utilized X-rays in Turkey. Just after the invention of X-rays, the first intraoral radiograms were obtained by Otto Walkhoff and Wilhelm Koenig in Germany and by Frank Harrison in England. The first dental radiology department in Turkey was founded in the Istanbul Darülfünunu Dişçi Mektebi (Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry) in 1927. Also, dental radiology education started at that time. The first book about radiology was written in 1928, which also was contained information about dental radiology. The first dentist whose profession was radiology was Galip Abdi Rona in Turkey. Rona also presented a paper and made radiology presentations in the first Turkish dental congress between 1 and 5 November 1932. In the beginning of the 1980s, radiology became an independent dental department. Today, in Turkey, there are about 45 dentistry faculties who have radiology departments. A lot of state-of-the-art devices are used not only in faculties but also in private clinics.
