7. The 2012-2015 Ghent-Utrecht Surcey Project at Thorikos : preliminary observations on the post-classical occupation

Abstract

Between 2012 and 2015, a team of Ghent and Utrecht Universities conducted an intensive survey of the southern slopes of the Velatouri Hill, covering the area of the lower settlement of Thorikos as well as parts of the acropolis. This project was completed in 2015, after which the inventorying and study of the 56,906 finds continued through 2016-2017. Awaiting the comprehensive publication of the entire Thorikos Survey Project, we present here some preliminary results regarding the post-Classical period, which has historically received only very limited attention. We will 1) outline the scientific aims of the Thorikos Survey Project and its methodology, and 2) focus on the Hellenistic, Roman, Late Antique, Byzantine and (Early) Modern occupation. This is a first attempt to arrive at an integrated account of all post-Classical activity on the slopes of the Velatouri until the present day. Our investigation shows that while activity decreased significantly after the Early Hellenistic period (early 3rd century BCE) owing to a general decline in mining activity, the site was periodically revisited in later times. Here we attempt to relate these fluctuations to changing settlement patterns elsewhere in Attica. Most notably, we posit that a relative increase in finds during in the Late Antique period may be connected to a limited resumption of the silver and/or lead industry in the 4th century CE.

Abstract

[ES]: El presente volumen recoge parte de las contribuciones presentadas durante el IX Congreso Internacional de Estudios Fenicios y Púnicos que tuvo lugar en Mérida entre los días 22 y 26 de octubre de 2018. Este encuentro, reúne cada cuatro años a los mayores especialistas en el conocimiento de las Culturas Fenicia y Púnica. Estos cuatro volúmenes recopilan parte de las novedades históricas y arqueológicas que fueron presentadas durante las jornadas. Los libros se estructuran en 15 áreas temáticas, además de los posters presentados y los trabajos correspondientes al Taller Doctoral., [EN]: This volume contains some of the contributions presented at the 9th International Congress of Phoenician and Punic Studies that took place in Mérida (Spain) between the 22-26 October 2018. This international scientific meeting is held every four years to bring together experts in Phoenician and Punic culture. These four volumes compile part of the new historical and archaeological data that was presented at the congress. The books are structured into 15 thematic sections and posters and papers derived from the Doctoral Workshop are also included.

10. PUNIC PAINTED WARE POTTERY FROM UZITA (TUNISIA).

Abstract

The Punic Painted Ware pottery stemming from the Dutch-Tunisian excavations of Jan Willem Salomonson (1970-1972; Utrecht University) in Uzita is presented and discussed. The site of Uzita (or Uzitta) was an urban settlement within the Roman Imperial province of Byzacena and the excavations focused upon the stratigraphies below the (mosaic) floors of three Roman domus. A decade after the excavations, Jaap van der Werff was the first to draw attention to finds that witnessed a preceding Punic phase. The present contribution elaborates upon the material from this phase, all found in residual position, showing a broad spectrum of Punic Painted Ware vessels dating to the (second half of the) 5th and 4th centuries BCE. Half the sample can be attributed to Carthaginian productions, the other half may stem from other Tunisian workshops, both from the immediate area of Uzita and beyond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
