Background: Open Source Software (OSS) is often seen as an option to mitigate risks of lock-ins. Yet, single-vendor OSS can still result in soft lock-ins due to knowledge asymmetries and technical barriers. Aim: This study explores actors that render such soft lock-ins. Research design: We conduct a qualitative case study of an E-service Platform (ESP) used by over 190+ municipalities. Results: User-driven lock-in factors emerged as a significant category, including limited and non-transparent communication, restrictive qualification requirements in procurement, confusion on maintainership, and comfort in the status quo. Technical lock-in factors include inadequate documentation, dependency management issues, and limited test coverage. Conclusions: Strong leadership and continuous training is needed to address presence of comfort and conservative culture among municipalities. Open Source Stewards, i.e., neutral hosts for OSS projects, can support municipalities in these tasks while also helping to foster an open, competitive collaboration that can enable a broader supplier ecosystem., Comment: Accepted for publication at the 57th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences 2024 (HICSS-57)

The differentiable programming paradigm is a cornerstone of modern scientific computing. It refers to numerical methods for computing the gradient of a numerical model's output. Many scientific models are based on differential equations, where differentiable programming plays a crucial role in calculating model sensitivities, inverting model parameters, and training hybrid models that combine differential equations with data-driven approaches. Furthermore, recognizing the strong synergies between inverse methods and machine learning offers the opportunity to establish a coherent framework applicable to both fields. Differentiating functions based on the numerical solution of differential equations is non-trivial. Numerous methods based on a wide variety of paradigms have been proposed in the literature, each with pros and cons specific to the type of problem investigated. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of existing techniques to compute derivatives of numerical solutions of differential equations. We first discuss the importance of gradients of solutions of differential equations in a variety of scientific domains. Second, we lay out the mathematical foundations of the various approaches and compare them with each other. Third, we cover the computational considerations and explore the solutions available in modern scientific software. Last but not least, we provide best-practices and recommendations for practitioners. We hope that this work accelerates the fusion of scientific models and data, and fosters a modern approach to scientific modelling.

We introduce the concept of half-closed nodes for nodal Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretisations. This is in contrast to more commonly used closed nodes in DG where in each element nodes are placed on every boundary. Half-closed nodes relax this constraint by only requiring nodes on a subset of the boundaries in each element, with this extra freedom in node placement allowing for increased efficiency in the assembly of DG operators. To determine which element boundaries half-closed nodes are placed on we outline a simple procedure based on switch functions. We examine the effect on operator sparsity from using the different types of nodes and show that in particular for the Laplace operator there is no difference in the sparsity from using half-closed or closed nodes. We also discuss in this work some linear solver techniques commonly used for Finite Element or Discontinuous Galerkin methods such as static condensation and block-based methods, and how they can be applied to half-closed DG discretisations.

We report the discovery of a boundary-induced body-centered tetragonal (bct) iron phase in thin films deposited on MgAl$_{2}$O$_{4}$ ($001$) substrates. We present evidence for this phase using detailed x-ray analysis and ab-initio density functional theory calculations. A lower magnetic moment and a rotation of the easy magnetisation direction are observed, as compared to body-centered cubic (bcc) iron. Our findings expand the range of known crystal and magnetic phases of iron, providing valuable insights for the development of heterostructure devices using ultra-thin iron layers., Comment: Main text: 4 pages, 3 figures. We present a learning based framework for mesh quality improvement on unstructured triangular and quadrilateral meshes. Our model learns to improve mesh quality according to a prescribed objective function purely via self-play reinforcement learning with no prior heuristics. The actions performed on the mesh are standard local and global element operations. The goal is to minimize the deviation of the node degrees from their ideal values, which in the case of interior vertices leads to a minimization of irregular nodes., Comment: Submitted to Computer-Aided Design Journal. Mesh optimization procedures are generally a combination of node smoothing and discrete operations which affect a small number of elements to improve the quality of the overall mesh. These procedures are useful as a post-processing step in mesh generation procedures and in applications such as fluid simulations with severely deforming domains. In order to perform high-order mesh optimization, these ingredients must also be extended to high-order (curved) meshes. In this work, we present a method to perform local element operations on curved meshes. The mesh operations discussed in this work are edge/face swaps, edge collapses, and edge splitting (more generally refinement) for triangular and tetrahedral meshes. These local operations are performed by first identifying the patch of elements which contain the edge/face being acted on, performing the operation as a straight-sided one by placing the high-order nodes via an isoparametric mapping from the master element, and smoothing the high-order nodes on the elements in the patch by minimizing a Jacobian-based high-order mesh distortion measure. Since the initial straight-sided guess from the placement of the nodes via the isoparametric mapping frequently results in invalid elements, the distortion measure must be regularized which allows for mesh untangling for the optimization to succeed. We present several examples in 2D and 3D to demonstrate these local operations and how they can be combined with a high-order node smoothing procedure to maintain mesh quality when faced with severe deformations., Comment: final version accepted at IJNME, 21 pages, 18 figures

We present a new high-order accurate discretisation on unstructured meshes of quadrilateral elements. Our Face Upwinded Spectral Element (FUSE) method uses the same node distribution as a high-order continuous Galerkin (CG) method, but with a particular choice of node locations within each element and an upwinded stencil on the face nodes. This results in a number of benefits, including fewer degrees of freedom and straight-forward integration with CG. We present the derivation of the scheme and the analysis of its properties, in particular showing stability using von Neumann analysis. We show numerical evidence for its accuracy and efficiency on multiple classes of problems including convection-dominated flows, Poisson's equation, and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.

A distributed quantum computing system requires a quantum communication channel between spatially separated processing units. In superconducting circuits, such a channel can be realized by using propagating microwave photons to encode and transfer quantum information between an emitter and a receiver node. Here we experimentally demonstrate a superconducting circuit that deterministically transfers the state of a data qubit into a propagating microwave mode, with a process fidelity of 94.5%. We use a time-varying parametric drive to shape the temporal profile of the propagating mode to be time-symmetric and with constant phase, so that reabsorption by the receiving processor can be implemented as a time-reversed version of the emission. We demonstrate a self-calibrating routine to correct for time-dependent shifts of the emitted frequencies due to the modulation of the parametric drive. Our work provides a reliable method to implement high-fidelity quantum state transfer and remote entanglement operations in a distributed quantum computing network.

Nitrogen-polar III-nitride heterostructures offer advantages over metal-polar structures in high frequency and high power applications. However, polarity control in III-nitrides is difficult to achieve as a result of unintentional polarity inversion domains (IDs). Herein, we present a comprehensive structural investigation with both atomic detail and thermodynamic analysis of the polarity evolution in low- and high-temperature AlN layers on on-axis and 4$^{\circ}$ off-axis Carbon-face 4H-SiC (000$\bar{1}$) grown by hot-wall metal organic chemical vapor deposition. A polarity control strategy has been developed by variation of thermodynamic Al supersaturation and substrate misorientation angle in order to achieve desired growth mode and polarity. We demonstrate that IDs are totally suppressed for high-temperature AlN nucleation layers when step-flow growth mode is achieved at the off-axis. As a single-phase alloy, CrFeCoNi is a face centered cubic (fcc) material related to the archetypical high-entropy Cantor alloy CrFeCoNiMn. For thin films, CrFeCoNi of approximately equimolar composition tends to assume an fcc structure when grown at room temperature by magnetron sputtering. However, the single-phase solid solution state is typically not achieved for thin films grown at higher temperatures. The same holds true for Cantor alloy-based ceramics (nitrides and oxides), where phase formation is extremely sensitive to process parameters such as the amount of reactive gas. This study combines theoretical and experimental methods to understand the phase formation in nitrogen-containing CrFeCoNi thin films. Density functional theory calculations considering three competing phases (CrN, Fe-Ni and Co) show that the free energy of mixing, delta G of (CrFeCoNi)1-xNx solid solutions has a maximum at x = 0.20-0.25, and delta G becomes lower when x less than 0.20, greater than 0.25. Thin films of (CrFeCoNi)1-xNx (x = 0.14-0.41) grown by magnetron sputtering show stabilization of the metallic fcc when x lesser than or equal to 0.22 and the stabilization of the NaCl B1 structure when x is greater than 0.33, consistent with the theoretical prediction. In contrast, films with intermediate amounts of nitrogen (x = 0.22) grown at higher temperatures show segregation into multiple phases of CrN, Fe-Ni-rich and Co. These results offer an explanation for the requirement of kinetically limited growth conditions at low temperature for obtaining single-phase CrFeCoNi Cantor-like nitrogen-containing thin films and are of importance for understanding the phase-formation mechanisms in multicomponent ceramics.

We present a method to derive new explicit expressions for bidiagonal decompositions of Vandermonde and related matrices such as the (q-, h-) Bernstein-Vandermonde ones, among others. These results generalize the existing expressions for nonsingular matrices to matrices of arbitrary rank. For totally nonnegative matrices of the above classes, the new decompositions can be computed efficiently and to high relative accuracy componentwise in floating point arithmetic. In turn, matrix computations (e.g., eigenvalue computation) can also be performed efficiently and to high relative accuracy.

Intercalation of non-van der Waals (vdW) layered materials can produce new 2D and 3D materials with unique properties, but it is difficult to achieve. Here, we describe a structural editing protocol for 3D non-vdW layered ternary carbides and nitrides (MAX phases) and their 2D vdW derivatives (MXenes). Gap-opening and species-intercalating stages were mediated by chemical scissors and guest intercalants, creating a large family of layered materials with unconventional elements and structures in MAX phases, as well as MXenes with versatile termination species. Removal of surface terminations by metal scissors and stitching of carbide layers by metal atoms leads to a reverse transformation from MXenes to MAX phases, and metal-intercalated 2D carbides. This scissor-mediated structural editing may enable structural and chemical tailoring of other layered ceramics.

The hot-wall metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), previously shown to enable superior III-nitride material quality and high performance devices, has been explored for Mg doping of GaN. We have investigated the Mg incorporation in a wide doping range ($2.45\times{10}^{18}~cm^{-3}$ up to $1.10\times{10}^{20}~cm^{-3}$) and demonstrate GaN:Mg with low background impurity concentrations under optimized growth conditions. Dopant and impurity levels are discussed in view of Ga supersaturation which provides a unified concept to explain the complexity of growth conditions impact on Mg acceptor incorporation and compensation. The results are analysed in relation to the extended defects, revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and surface morphology, and in correlation with the electrical properties obtained by Hall effect and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements. This allows to establish a comprehensive picture of GaN:Mg growth by hot-wall MOCVD providing guidance for growth parameters optimization depending on the targeted application. We show that substantially lower H concentration as compared to Mg acceptors can be achieved in GaN:Mg without any in-situ or post-growth annealing resulting in p-type conductivity in as-grown material. State-of-the-art $p$-GaN layers with a low-resistivity and a high free-hole density (0.77 $\Omega$.cm and $8.4\times{10}^{17}~cm^{-3}$, respectively) are obtained after post-growth annealing demonstrating the viability of hot-wall MOCVD for growth of power electronic device structures., Comment: main: 11 pages, 8 figures - supplementary: 2 pages, 3 figures

We report on structure, vibrational properties and weak-antilocalization-(WAL-) induced quantum correction to magnetoconductivity in single crystal Bi2GeTe4. Surface band structure calculations show a single Dirac cone corresponding to topological surface states in Bi2GeTe4. An estimated phase coherence length, l_{\phi} ~ 143 nm and prefactor {\alpha} ~ - 1.54 from Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka fitting of magnetoconductivity describe the quantum correction to conductivity. An anomalous temperature dependence of A1g Raman modes confirms enhanced electron-phonon interactions. Our results establish the involvement of vibrations of Bi-Te with existence of topological surface states and WAL in Bi2GeTe4.

Solid-state precipitation can be used to tailor materials properties, ranging from ferromagnets and catalysts to mechanical strengthening and energy storage. Thermoelectric properties can be modified by precipitation to enhance phonon scattering while retaining charge-carrier transmission. Here, we uncover unconventional dual Janus-type nanoprecipitates in Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 formed by side-by-side Bi- and Ge-rich appendages, in contrast to separate nanoprecipitate formation. These Janus nanoprecipitates result from local co-melting of Bi and Ge during sintering, enabling an amorphous-like lattice thermal conductivity. A precipitate size effect on phonon scattering is observed due to the balance between alloy-disorder and nanoprecipitate scattering. The thermoelectric figure-of-merit ZT reaches 0.6 near room temperature and 1.6 at 773 K. The Janus nanoprecipitation can be introduced into other materials and may act as a general property-tailoring mechanism.

Two dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials have attracted much attention in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials science, but their synthesis is still a challenge given their limitations on structural stability and susceptibility to oxidization. MAX phases nanolaminated ternary carbides or nitrides possess a unique crystal structure in which single-atom-thick A sublayers are interleaved by two dimensional MX slabs, providing nanostructured templates for designing 2D ferromagnetic materials if the non-magnetic A sublayers can be substituted replaced by magnetic elements. Here, we report three new ternary magnetic MAX phases (Ta2FeC, Ti2FeN and Nb2FeC) with A sublayers of single-atom-thick 2D iron through an isomorphous replacement reaction of MAX precursors (Ta2AlC, Ti2AlN and Nb2AlC) with a Lewis acid salts (FeCl2). All these MAX phases exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) behavior. The Curie temperature (Tc) of Ta2FeC and Nb2FeC MAX phase are 281 K and 291 K, respectively, i.e. close to room temperature. The saturation magnetization of these ternary magnetic MAX phases is almost two orders of magnitude higher than that of V2(Sn,Fe)C MAX phase whose A-site is partial substituted by Fe. Theoretical calculations on magnetic orderings of spin moments of Fe atoms in these nanolaminated magnetic MAX phases reveal that the magnetism can be mainly ascribed to intralayer exchange interaction of the 2D Fe atomic layers. Owning to the richness in composition of MAX phases, there is a large compositional space for constructing functional single-atom-thick 2D layers in materials using these nanolaminated templates.

We present a novel approach for high-order accurate numerical differentiation on unstructured meshes of quadrilateral elements. To differentiate a given function, an auxiliary function with greater smoothness properties is defined which when differentiated provides the derivatives of the original function. The method generalises traditional finite difference methods to meshes of arbitrary topology in any number of dimensions for any order of derivative and accuracy. We demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical scheme using dual quadrilateral meshes and a refinement method based on subdivision surfaces. The scheme is applied to the solution of a range of partial differential equations, including both linear and nonlinear, second and fourth order equations, and a time-dependent first order equation.

A recently developed high-order implicit shock tracking (HOIST) framework for resolving discontinuous solutions of inviscid, steady conservation laws [41, 43] is extended to the unsteady case. Central to the framework is an optimization problem which simultaneously computes a discontinuity-aligned mesh and the corresponding high-order approximation to the flow, which provides nonlinear stabilization and a high-order approximation to the solution. This work extends the implicit shock tracking framework to the case of unsteady conservation laws using a method of lines discretization via a diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta method by "solving a steady problem at each timestep". We formulate and solve an optimization problem that produces a feature-aligned mesh and solution at each Runge-Kutta stage of each timestep, and advance this solution in time by standard Runge-Kutta update formulas. A Rankine-Hugoniot based prediction of the shock location together with a high-order, untangling mesh smoothing procedure provides a high-quality initial guess for the optimization problem at each time, which results in rapid convergence of the sequential quadratic programing (SQP) optimization solver. This method is shown to deliver highly accurate solutions on coarse, high-order discretizations without nonlinear stabilization and recover the design accuracy of the Runge-Kutta scheme. We demonstrate this framework on a series of inviscid, unsteady conservation laws in both one- and two- dimensions. We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.

The class of two-dimensional metal carbides and nitrides known as MXenes offer a distinct manner of property tailoring for a wide range of applications. The ability to tune the surface chemistry for expanding the property space of MXenes is thus an important topic, although experimental exploration of new surface terminals remains a challenge. Here, we synthesized Ti3C2 MXene with unitary, binary and ternary halogen terminals, e.g. -Cl, -Br, -I, -BrI and -ClBrI, to investigate the effect of surface chemistry on the properties of MXenes. The electrochemical activity of Br and I element result in the extraordinary electrochemical performance of the MXenes as cathodes for aqueous zinc ion batteries. The -Br and -I containing MXenes, e.g. Ti3C2Br2 and Ti3C2I2, exhibit distinct discharge platforms with considerable capacities of 97.6 mAh g-1 and 135 mAh g-1. Ti3C2(BrI) and Ti3C2(ClBrI) exhibit dual discharge platforms with capacities of 117.2 mAh g-1 and 106.7 mAh g-1. In contrast, the previously discovered MXenes Ti3C2Cl2 and Ti3C2(OF) exhibit no discharge platforms, and only ~50% of capacities and energy densities of Ti3C2Br2. These results emphasize the effectiveness of the Lewis-acidic-melt etching route for tuning the surface chemistry of MXenes, and also show promise for expanding the MXene family towards various applications.

A novel framework for resolving discontinuous solutions of conservation laws, e.g., contact lines, shock waves, and interfaces, using implicit tracking and a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization was introduced in [38]. Central to the framework is an optimization problem whose solution is a discontinuity-aligned mesh and the corresponding high-order approximation to the flow that does not require explicit meshing of the unknown discontinuity surface. The method was shown to deliver highly accurate solutions on coarse, high-order discretizations without nonlinear stabilization and recover optimal convergence rates even for problems with discontinuous solutions. This work extends the implicit tracking framework such that robustness is improved and convergence accelerated. In particular, we introduce an improved formulation of the central optimization problem and an associated sequential quadratic programming (SQP) solver. The new error-based objective function penalizes violation of the DG residual in an enriched test space and is shown to have excellent tracking properties. The SQP solver simultaneously converges the nodal coordinates of the mesh and DG solution to their optimal values and is equipped with a number of features to ensure robust, fast convergence: Levenberg-Marquardt approximation of the Hessian with weighted elliptic regularization, backtracking line search, and rigorous convergence criteria. We use the proposed method to solve a range of inviscid conservation laws of varying difficulty. We show the method is able to deliver accurate solutions on coarse, high-order meshes and the SQP solver is robust and usually able to drive the first-order optimality system to tight tolerances., Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures

This article considers a new discretization scheme for conservation laws. The discretization setting is based on a discontinuous Galerkin scheme in combination with an approximation space that contains high-order polynomial modes as well as piece-wise constant modes on a sub-grid. The high-order modes can continuously be suppressed with a penalty function that is based on a sensor which is intertwined with the approximation space. Numerical tests finally illustrate the performance of this scheme.

Two-dimensional carbides and nitrides of transition metals, known as MXenes, are a fast-growing family of 2D materials that draw attention as energy storage materials. So far, MXenes are mainly prepared from Al-containing MAX phases (where A = Al) by Al dissolution in F-containing solution, but most other MAX phases have not been explored. Here, a redox-controlled A-site-etching of MAX phases in Lewis acidic melts is proposed and validated by the synthesis of various MXenes from unconventional MAX phase precursors with A elements Si, Zn, and Ga. A negative electrode of Ti3C2 MXene material obtained through this molten salt synthesis method delivers a Li+ storage capacity up to 738 C g-1 (205 mAh g-1) with high-rate performance and pseudocapacitive-like electrochemical signature in 1M LiPF6 carbonate-based electrolyte. MXene prepared from this molten salt synthesis route offer opportunities as high-rate negative electrode material for electrochemical energy storage applications.

This work reports on sputter depositions carried out from a compound (Ti,Zr)2AlC target, whereupon Al-containing (Ti,Zr)C thin films (30-40 nm in thickness) were deposited on MgO(111) and Al2O3(0001) substrates at temperatures ranging between 500 and 900 {\deg}C. The presence of Al within the carbide structure was evidenced by lattice parameter variations. Furthermore, chemical analyses showed that the Al distribution throughout the film thickness was fairly homogeneous. Thicker films (80-90 nm) deposited from the same compound target consisted of the pseudo-binary (Ti,Zr)C and intermetallic compounds in the Ti-Zr-Al system up to 800 {\deg}C, as well as solid solution MAX phases with different Ti:Zr ratios at 900 {\deg}C. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed that both (Ti,Zr)2AlC and (Ti,Zr)3AlC2 solid solution MAX phases were formed. Moreover, this work discusses the growth mechanism of the thicker films, which started with the formation of the mixed (Ti,Zr)C carbide, followed by the nucleation and growth of aluminides, eventually leading to the formation of the MAX phases, which was the primary objective of the sputter depositions.

We present an arbitrarily high-order, conditionally stable, partitioned spectral deferred correction (SDC) method for solving multiphysics problems using a sequence of pre-existing single-physics solvers. This method extends the work in [1, 2], which used implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta methods (IMEX) to build high-order, partitioned multiphysics solvers. We consider a generic multiphysics problem modeled as a system of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs), coupled through coupling terms that can depend on the state of each subsystem; therefore the method applies to both a semi-discretized system of partial differential equations (PDEs) or problems naturally modeled as coupled systems of ODEs. The sufficient conditions to build arbitrarily high-order partitioned SDC schemes are derived. Based on these conditions, various of partitioned SDC schemes are designed. The stability of the first-order partitioned SDC scheme is analyzed in detail on a coupled, linear model problem. We show that the scheme is conditionally stable, and under conditions on the coupling strength, the scheme can be unconditionally stable. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed partitioned solvers on several classes of multiphysics problems including a simple linear system of ODEs, advection-diffusion-reaction systems, and fluid-structure interaction problems with both incompressible and compressible flows, where we verify the design order of the SDC schemes and study various stability properties. We also directly compare the accuracy, stability, and cost of the proposed partitioned SDC solver with the partitioned IMEX method in [1, 2] on this suite of test problems. Tailoring of individual single-atom-thick layers in nanolaminated materials offers atomic-level control over material properties. Nonetheless, multielement alloying in individual atomic layers in nanolaminates is largely unexplored. Here, we report a series of inherently nanolaminated V2(A'xSn1-x)C (A'=Fe, Co, Ni and Mn, and combinations thereof, with x=1/3) synthesized by an alloy-guided reaction. The simultaneous occupancy of the four magnetic elements and Sn, the individual single-atom-thick A layers in the compound constitute high-entropy-alloy analogues, two-dimensional in the sense that the alloying exclusively occurs in the A layers. V2(A'xSn1-x)C exhibit distinct ferromagnetic behavior that can be compositionally tailored from the multielement A-layer alloying. This two-dimensional alloying provides a structural-design route with expanded chemical space for discovering materials and exploit properties.

New MAX phases Ti2(AlxCu1-x)N and Nb2CuC were synthesized by A-site replacement by reacting Ti2AlN and Nb2AlC, respectively, with CuCl2 or CuI molten salt. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomically-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy showed complete A-site replacement in Nb2AlC, which lead to formation of Nb2CuC. However, the replacement of Al in Ti2AlN phase was only close to complete at Ti2(Al0.1Cu0.9)N. Density-functional theory calculations corroborated the structural stability of Nb2CuC and Ti2CuN phases. Nanolaminated materials are important because of their exceptional properties and wide range of applications. Here, we demonstrate a general approach to synthesize a series of Zn-based MAX phases and Cl-terminated MXenes originating from the replacement reaction between the MAX phase and the late transition metal halides. The approach is a top-down route that enables the late transitional element atom (Zn in the present case) to occupy the A site in the pre-existing MAX phase structure. Using this replacement reaction between Zn element from molten ZnCl2 and Al element in MAX phase precursors (Ti3AlC2, Ti2AlC, Ti2AlN, and V2AlC), novel MAX phases Ti3ZnC2, Ti2ZnC, Ti2ZnN, and V2ZnC were synthesized. When employing excess ZnCl2, Cl terminated MXenes (such as Ti3C2Cl2 and Ti2CCl2) were derived by a subsequent exfoliation of Ti3ZnC2 and Ti2ZnC due to the strong Lewis acidity of molten ZnCl2. These results indicate that A-site element replacement in traditional MAX phases by late transition metal halides opens the door to explore MAX phases that are not thermodynamically stable at high temperature and would be difficult to synthesize through the commonly employed powder metallurgy approach.
