The COVID‐19 pandemic triggered an unprecedented health crisis that impacted healthcare systems worldwide. This study explores how Spanish healthcare workers learned, internalised and integrated values and work behaviours during the COVID‐19 pandemic and their impact on the personal sphere. This documentary research, using images, narratives and audiovisual content, was framed within the interpretative hermeneutic paradigm. Categories and subcategories emerged after a final theoretical sampling that focused on the analysis. Data triangulation between researchers favoured theoretical saturation. A total of 117 images and 27 texts were selected. The analysis identified three stages: bewilderment, seeking functionality in the chaos and integrating chaos into care. The data reflects how the need for security and knowledge, and the exhaustion and frustration caused by the initial working conditions, prompted adaptive responses. These responses involved focusing on problem‐solving and strengthening group sentiments and solidarity. Subsequently, the data indicates the acceptance of new structural, organisational and communication aspects. Physical therapy students must learn about heart transplantation. They need to know how to care for these patients' emotions and needs. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a narrative photography (NP) program and a traditional learning (TL) program in physical therapy students' knowledge, satisfaction, empathy, and moral sensitivity. A two‐armed assessor‐blinded randomized controlled trial was carried out. One hundred and seventeen physical therapy students participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: (i) NP group (n = 56) and (ii) TL group (n = 61). At the end of the program, NP group's knowledge increased when compared with the TL group (p = 0.02). 90.57% of the sample was very satisfied/satisfied with the NP method, and 88.68% felt that NP helped them to understand the importance of considering subjective realities. In conclusion, NP improved knowledge and satisfaction compared with the TL group. These results suggest that NP may be a useful method to improve the academic outcomes of physical therapy students in the heart transplantation field; thus, NP may be considered a teaching–learning methodology of choice in physical therapy students. Participation is widely recognized as an important health determinant for older adults. Exploring interventions to promote active participation of community-dwelling older adults is an important step in translating current knowledge into practice. Few studies have examined community-level interventions to support older adults' participation. The study purpose was to examine the significance of the lived experiences of community-dwelling older adults who participated in an interprofessional healthy aging promotion program. The specific aims were to uncover the narrative significance of the lived experiences and how they evolved and intertwined with the life histories of the older adults 2 years after the intervention ended. A narrative inquiry design was used. Four key informants participated in two semi-structured interviews and a member-checking process. The data were analyzed from a three-dimensional inquiry space of time and continuity, place and context, and social interactions. The findings affirmed three core threads that wove the participants' lived experiences within the program together with their life histories after the intervention. These were enjoyment, learning, and sharing. Four themes revealed the essential elements of the lived experience, and three others exposed participants' growth and life enrichment, all being fundamental to participation. The 3-year community-level intervention was valued and a novel opportunity for facilitating participation and successful aging. It allowed the participants to acquire an evolved vision of self, have meaningful interactions, develop the means to engage in future community activities, implement new self-care strategies, and establish memories and friendships significant for life participation. Background: Personal narratives play an essential role in children's social and academic development. However, children with Down syndrome have ongoing challenges with constructing and communicating personal narratives. Methods: Using a single‐case multiple‐probe across participants design, we examined whether a targeted intervention could improve both micro‐ and macro‐structural aspects of personal narratives from Chinese adolescents with Down syndrome. Results: All three participants demonstrated high treatment effects in two macrostructural narrative outcomes (i.e., narrative element complexity and narrative coherence) in response to the intervention and moderate to high treatment effects in the microstructural narrative outcomes (i.e., the mean length of utterance in words and the number of different words). However, all participants demonstrated limited improvements in narrative cohesion. These effects were maintained and generalised in a different narrative condition. Conclusions: The preliminary findings support the feasibility and effectiveness of the personal narrative intervention incorporated with self‐monitoring strategies for adolescents with Down syndrome. We found previously that ChatGPT-4 could use 50 stream-of-consciousness thoughts to make the latent construct of narrative identity explicit. We now demonstrate this as a tool for interventions by coaches and therapists. Using five narrative identities, ChatGPT-4 recommended actionable strategies and interventions tailored to the narrative identity. Artificial intelligence (AI) can thus support coaches and therapists by crafting personalized approaches drawing on the person's narrative identity. The personal narrative is a construct said to embody personal identity and so influence thought and guide behavior. Therapists and coaches draw on such personal narratives to explain maladaptive thoughts and to foster clients' insights. We combined artificial intelligence (AI) with stream-of-consciousness to make the latent construct of personal narrative explicit. Adult participants (n = 26) contributed 50 stream-of-consciousness thoughts, which along with demographic details and our prompts, were processed by ChatGPT-4 to create a personal narrative. Participants evaluated these AI-generated narratives for accuracy, surprise, and insightfulness, reporting high accuracy, surprise, and increased self-insight. Twenty-five of the 26 participants rated the narratives as 'Completely Accurate' or 'Mostly Accurate',19 rated the narratives as 'Very Surprising' or 'Somewhat Surprising', and 19 indicated that they learned something new about themselves. The performance of participants in the Miss Gay Muchakang Pangkalawan [Miss Ugly Gay Universe] in Quiapo, Manila, reflects characteristics of the flamboyant and effeminate bakla. However, these stereotypical depictions may not always be consistent with how participants view themselves. This study argues that an introspective understanding of how participants make sense of their identity work engendered by ever-turning tropes reveals slippages that can liberate them from existing oppressive stereotypes. By utilizing personal narrative and ethnographic reflexivity, this study deconstructs the participants’ performances, revealing identity-making that may reinforce or resist dominant discourses on the bakla under which these narratives are produced. Taking into consideration the deep affectional connections and intersubjectivity among bakla, the study contends that the obscure pageants of the “ugly” are not merely sites of gender self-discovery and contesting of local stereotypes but are also queer tropical arenas that resist hegemonic views.

This article is divided into three parts. First of all, as a first provocation, I have indicated three paragraphs, to generally indicate to the reader what they can possibly find within the content of this text. Secondly, I will specifically present some conceptual and methodological aspects of the autoethnographic approach, understanding that this is not a deepening of the topic, but simply a second provocation, for the reader-evaluator to consider (which, for me, would be the same) taking a stance on what you are reading, and third, I will show an autoethnographic fragment of my own, to point out the writing in autoethnography initiated from an epiphany. In this article, the authors share an account of an eighth-grade personal narrative unit designed to support students in composing accounts of life during the 2020–21 pandemic school year. The article provides an overview of the four phases that comprised this nine-lesson unit and the materials and resources used. Students' voices, perspectives, and details from their compositions feature throughout the article. Implications for practice include considering the importance of life writing for both self and audiences and the meaningfulness of making space in middle level curricula for students to process their lives and respond to events in their world. Abstract Background Anti-fat attitudes and weight-based discrimination are prevalent in healthcare settings and among healthcare practitioners and clinical trainees, and can result in immense harm to patients. There is increasing recognition that anti-fat bias in healthcare is a critical issue that must be addressed, but there is a dearth of evidence demonstrating sustained attitude and behavioural change among clinicians, illustrating a need for more innovative educational approaches and rigorous evaluation. We describe the co-design and delivery of a narrative-based continuing professional development curriculum aimed at raising awareness of weight-based bias and stigma. Methods Our research team of lived experience educators, clinicians and researchers collaboratively developed a series of seven podcast episodes comprised of narrative descriptions of lived experiences with and impacts of weight bias, stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings, as well as a post-podcast workshop to facilitate reflection and discussion between participants. The curriculum was piloted among 20 clinicians practicing at a large urban hospital in Mississauga, Canada. We explored feasibility, acceptability and learning impact by analyzing responses to questionnaires completed following each podcast episode and responses shared during the workshops and follow-up feedback sessions. Results We observed high acceptability and feasibility of the curriculum. Participants experienced the podcast as a practical and convenient learning format and the workshop as a valuable opportunity to collectively debrief and reflect. The learning impact of the curriculum was strong; participants described a range of emotions elicited by the podcasts, engaged in self-reflection, and expressed a desire to modify clinical approaches. Barriers to the application of learnings identified by participants include pervasiveness of the use of body mass index (BMI) as an indicator of risk and a criterion for referral; discomfort with difficult conversations; prevalent biomedical understandings about the association between weight and health; and clinicians’ defensiveness. Conclusion This pilot study yielded promising findings and demonstrated potential impact on weight bias and stigma among healthcare providers. Necessary next steps include conducting larger scale, rigorous evaluations of the curriculum among broader populations, both health professions trainees and current healthcare providers.

From a medical standpoint, breastmilk is the optimal option for feeding a baby, relegating the cultural, social, and material determinants to breastfeeding. Worldwide, breastfeeding rates are low, especially among working mothers. Healthcare providers have low breastfeeding rates due to several barriers to lactation, i.e. work schedule andlack of private places for pumping. A descriptive qualitative methodology was applied to examine the breastfeeding experiences of Ecuadorian mothers who are healthcare professionals. Twenty healthcare professionals who breastfed their babies took part in the research. Data gathering employed synchronous semi-structured interviews in Spanish. The data analysis followed the Phronetic Iterative Approach. Women shifted the preconceived idea of the ideal breastfeeding scenario concerning duration, promotion, and support, ideals which are constructed in their training as healthcare professionals. Although these women believe that breast milk and breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby, the internalized ideal of breastfeeding shifted with the experience of motherhood. Although they had that clash between the ideal and the external reality, they continued breastfeeding their babies, and those experiences resulted in them improving their professional practice. This study demonstrated that breastfeeding for this group of women appears to be a unique relational and identity negotiation process. The findings emphasize that experiencing breastfeeding for this group of healthcare providers positively shifted how they communicate breastfeeding with their patients in the clinical encounter. Ensuring that healthcare professionals acquire a different approach for educating and communicating about lactation is an essential determinant in efforts to improve breastfeeding rates in Ecuador. The COVID-19 pandemic and concomitant measures to mitigate it have exacerbated pre-existing social inequalities and have proven to be major disruptive phenomena at both individual and community levels. People with disabilities and chronic illnesses have been some of the most drastically impacted social groups during the pandemic whose isolation and vulnerabilities have often been compounded in the wake of the massive social upheaval. Through an autoethnographic account of a woman with a physical disability in India who has also survived polio, heart disease, cancer and COVID-19, this article captures some of the complex and conflicting emotions and experiences of a life lived at the intersections of various embodied precarities and demonstrates how a social disaster can itself constitute a biographical disruption. This article argues that the oral performance of personal monologues in first‐year composition courses allows students to identify meaningfully with one another across difference at a time when the American political climate too often forecloses such opportunities. The author considers the opportunity personal monologue provides for parrhesia that recontextualizes the space in which deliberative discourse occurs. Drawing on a case study of the author's food‐based composition course, this article provides supporting evidence for the power of performed personal monologue to encourage mutual identification among students that creates a new foundation for subsequent discourse. Throughout history, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have overcome countless challenges to achieve their goals of maintaining cultural traditions, providing key leadership and role models, assuring economic functions, addressing issues between minority and majority populations, and producing Black agents for research, institutional training, and information dissemination within the Black and other minority communities. Using a Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN), this article focuses on the function, legacy, and relevance of current HBCUs. Using W. E. B. Du Bois's "double consciousness" as a theoretical framework, each of the 12 contributing scholars address these questions: How have you reconciled your individual strivings? Has the HBCU placed a role in your reconciliation process? What SPN is emblematic of your reconciliation process? These questions are addressed through vivid narrative accounts that speak to the critical constructs of belonging—Black identity; gifted education, selfhood, spirituality, and theoretical frameworks. Introduction: This paper explores the evolving landscape of narratives, distinguishing it from the traditional approaches of classical cognitive psychology and social psychology. While cognitive psychology strictly models interpretations based on causal relations, narrative psychology perceives memory, thought, and perception as story construction processes, asserting that individuals contextualize experiences within narrative structures. Aim: The primary objective is to identify the factors shaping narratives, specifically within the context of referentiality, temporal structurality, and their implications for subjective well-being interpreted through social representations. Methodology: The research framework adopts a sociology-influenced lens to interpret narratives, emphasizing the determinacy of social situations and specific time periods. The narrative schemata is dissected, viewing it as an organizational tool for past events. To bring depth to the exploration, various life stories such as „the never tired worker” and „the photojournalist” serve as illustrative examples. Discussion: Exploring the role of referentiality and time within narratives, the essentiality of temporal structurality is emphasized. By juxtaposing distinct life stories, the nuances in social representations and their confluence in shaping narratives is underscored - reflecting to sources of subjective well-being. Conclusion: Personal narratives offer a fresh perspective in the field of sociology, opening doors to understanding how individuals create meaning through stories influenced by their social surroundings and temporal contexts. Every oral communication is shaped by a series of closely linked factors and rhythm is one of them. The rhythmical flow in colloquial Mandarin Chinese was thoroughly described by the Czech phonetician Oldřich Švarný, who invented a unique notation system dedicated to facilitating the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. His prosodic transcription parses speech into a two-level arrangement of prosodic units. It displays the speech rhythm as an alternation of rhythmically significant and insignificant syllables of unequal tone prominence. The paper contributes to Švarný’s findings by shifting the attention from prefabricated teaching materials to an example of unrehearsed dynamic speech. Specifically, it attempts to outline the basic rhythmical features of personal narrative and confront them with the current understanding of speech rhythm in colloquial Chinese. It also demonstrates how Švarný’s methodological framework can be exploited to investigate different types of spoken discourse.

Personal narratives constitute one of the most fundamental means of making sense of one's experiences. In the digital age, documenting life online has emerged as a new form of personal narrative. However, what contributes to documenting life online and its implications has remained unaddressed. With self-reported scales (Studies 1–2) and the behavioral indicator from social media (i.e., posts on Weibo, a Twitter-like online platform in China; Study 2), we examined the relationship between documenting life online and nostalgia, as well as implications for global self-continuity (i.e., a sense of connectedness among past, present, and future selves) and psychological well-being. We found nostalgia was positively associated with self-reported (Study 1) and behavioral (Study 2) documenting life online. Meanwhile, we also found a sequential mediation model: nostalgia was positively associated with documenting life online. Further, this act of online documentation is sequentially linked to positive impacts on global self-continuity and psychological well-being (Studies 1–2). Purpose/Introduction: Narrative language skills are critical for effective social interactions and academic success. Consequently, narratives are regularly an aspect of assessment and intervention for children with communication impairments, supporting the need for information about typical development from children across cultures. Development of coherent personal narratives is associated with growth of both one's individual identity and cultural identity which are linked to psychological well-being. The topics and contents of children's personal stories can provide insight into cultural influences on what children consider important, how they interpret experiences, and their values and beliefs, which in turn contribute to their developing individual and cultural self-identity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the topics and content of personal narratives told by typically developing 10-year-old children from East Asian and Western English-speaking cultures. Methods: There were 20 children in each of three East Asian language groups – Mandarin, Cantonese, and Korean; and 62 children in the English-speaking groups (22 in the USA and 20 each in the Australian and New Zealand groups). In each group, half were boys and half were girls. Children responded to prompts from the Global TALES protocol to elicit personal narratives. All language samples were transcribed, translated, and coded for topic choices using qualitative content analysis in collaborative discussions by the four authors, who included an English-speaking author from the USA (C.E.W.), and three authors, who are native speakers of the three East Asian languages, Mandarin (K.-M.C.), Cantonese (A.M.-Y.W.), and Korean (J.P.L.). Results: Results on topics in stories from East Asian and Western English-speaking cultures are described in relation to literature on anthropology. English-speaking children and East Asian children in this study talked about similar topics in their personal narratives, but the frequency of these topics within their stories varied. Possible explanations for differences in story topics are discussed within a framework on cultural dimensions. Conclusion: Evaluation of the topics of children's personal narratives provides insight into what is important to the children and the way they view their worlds. This information may inform clinical approaches to assessment and intervention with children with communication impairments, encouraging clinicians to go beyond analysis of language structure to consider multiple factors that influence communicative competence. Background: Care delivery that is not person-centered has been called discordant care. There has been a shift to incorporate more of a person's narrative into their individual healthcare treatment plan to reduce discordant care. Aligning with this shift in healthcare delivery, we developed a person-centered narrative intervention (PCNI) to address existing gaps in delivery of person-centered care. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a randomized study and describe the outcomes of PCNI to usual care on the following person (patient)-reported outcomes: perceptions of the quality of communication with their nurses and their psychosocial and existential well-being. Methods: This study's design was an Obesity-Related Behavioral Intervention Trials model Phase II proof-of-concept randomized study. The participants were people admitted to an acute care hospital diagnosed with heart failure and/or end-stage renal disease. Results: Despite COVID-19 challenges, the PCNI was feasible in an acute care setting; it showed a moderate positive difference between conditions in the person's perception of their quality of communication and a small positive difference in their perception of feeling heard and understood. For our secondary outcomes of anxiety, depression, and psychosocial illness effect, there were small or no effects in the acute care setting. Discussion: Using a person-centered narrative, such as the PCNI, can help inform delivery of care that incorporates a person's(patient's) beliefs, values, and preferences into their healthcare. This study used a pragmatic approach to evaluate the PCNI in real time in an acute care setting to assess patient-reported outcomes. These positive results in a small sample indicate the need for continued testing of the PCNI. The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the morbidity and mortality of residents in long-term care (LTC) homes. However, not much is known about its impact on staff's perception of their capacity to provide palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care for LTC residents over the course of the pandemic. We investigated changes in self-reported confidence among LTC workers and their experience in providing palliative and EOL care to residents before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mixed-methods evaluation using a survey (n = 19) and semistructured interviews (n = 28). Frontline workers from 9 LTC homes who participated in Communication at End-of-Life Program in Ontario, Canada, between August 2019 and March 2020. The survey captured LTC staff's confidence level, including attitudes toward death and dying; relationships with residents and families; and participation in palliative and EOL care. The interviews identified facilitators and barriers to providing palliative and EOL care during the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted frontline LTC staff's confidence in their role as palliative care providers. Participants also reported notable challenges to providing resident-centered palliative and EOL care. Specifically, visitation restriction has led to increased loneliness and isolation of residents and impeded staff's ability to build supportive relationships with families. Furthermore, staffing shortages due to the single-site work restriction and illness increased workload. Psychological stress caused by a fear of COVID-19 infection and transmission also hindered staff's capacity to provide good palliative and EOL care. Frontline LTC staff—even those who felt competent in their knowledge and skills in providing palliative and EOL care after receiving training—reported notable difficulties in providing resident-centered palliative and EOL care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Personal narrative is a powerful way to include people in their care and to understand their values that drive their needs. In this paper, we describe a program designed to teach oral history to clinicians and trainees in the field of aging, dementia and caregiving. The training uses empathic listening, open-ended interviewing, and the discovery of individual values and experience to breakdown stigma and preconceptions of what it means to age with cognitive impairment. Sharing these stories of aging, dementia, and caregiving becomes an important tool to break down stereotypes, promote person-centered care, and advocate for the unheard. The profound impact of the oral history process is felt by the narrator, the interviewer and the listener. While there is no unanimous definition of the Bildungsroman as such, the definition of the female Bildungsroman is even more ambiguous. Based on the different works considered, the article attempts to identify constants and variants, depending on the different periods.

In this perspective paper, we argue for incorporating personal narratives in positive psychology interventions for chronic pain. Narratives refer to the telling and retelling of events. Narratives detail accounts of events and provide rich, in-depth information on human interactions, relationships, and perspectives. As such, narratives have been used to understand people’s experiences with pain and pain coping mechanisms—as well as to facilitate therapeutic outcomes. Furthermore, narrative research has shown that narration can help restore and promote relief, calm, hope, self-awareness, and self-understanding in chronic pain sufferers. Positive psychology interventions have been successful in improving the lives of people living with chronic pain, but these psychology interventions do not typically incorporate personal narratives. Still, narrative, and positive psychology scholarship foci overlap, as both aim to enhance people’s quality of life, happiness, and well-being, and to promote the understanding of psychosocial strengths and resources. In this article, we provide a rationale for incorporating personal narratives as an agentic form of positive psychology intervention. To that aim, we outline areas of convergence between positive psychology and narrative research and show how combining positive psychology exercises and narration can have additive benefits for pain sufferers. We also show how integrating narration in positive psychology intervention research can have advantages for healthcare research and policy.

Many groups (healthcare professionals, lawyers, philosophers, non-governmental organisations, bioethics committees, journalists, religious groups, etc.) participate in the bioethical debate about medical assistance in dying (MAiD). Bioethics literature on the topic involve different approaches (analytic, empirical, policy oriented, activist) and various normative perspectives (discourses based on deontological premises as the sanctity of life and human dignity, or on utilitarianism, libertarianism, etc.), some of which are at times irreconcilable. Regarding empirical studies, some voices (e.g., healthcare professionals) have been widely considered but the voice of people who request MAiD has been neglected. Understanding the personal and medical circumstances that lead to MAiD, which can only be achieved by listening to the phenomenological discourse of those involved, is key. This study aims to provide knowledge from the testimonies and experiences of patients who have initiated a MAiD request. We believe this research protocol can increase our understanding of a social and academic controversy that lacks important information to be complete. By doing so, this type of research could inform and improve end-of-life public policies, and particularly the health care of individuals who request a MAiD. We propose a qualitative phenomenological study using semi-structured interviews of people in the process of requesting MAiD, as outlined in the Ley Orgánica 3/2021, de regulación de la eutanasia (LORE), the Spanish Law on the Regulation of Euthanasia. The study is conducted nationally using a convenience sampling. The number of interviews is determined sequentially and cumulatively, depending on the richness of the narratives and the saturation of the information that has been collected. For the purposes of analysis, the interviews are transcribed verbatim and pseudonymised afterwards. Data analysis is conducted at the same time as data collection. Objective: Based on the assumption that the cultural image at the level of experience is the collective and individual psychological reality expressed by cultural narrative and individual narrative, to study the timeless Tales of Nezha ("Natch") in China as an experiential cultural image of child development and parent-child relationship. Method: We adopted the narrative analysis method which focused on qualitative content analysis, covering religion, folklore, literature, entertainment, education and other fields. Result: Our exposition articulates a cultural narrative framework of diachronic and contemporary cultural image of "Nezha", the iconic child deity. This framework refers to our academic research discipline of describing the image characteristics, plots and interpersonal relationship, and conceptualizing the theme as psychological meaning units of personal identity and parent-child relationship. By analogizing and comparing this framework with the "Nezha" of personal narratives in consultation, we found the interactive clues of the case's identity and parent-child relationship. We then combined these with specific elements unique and particular to each individual case in order to achieve a meaningful case conceptualization. This process enabled us to apply psychotherapeutic intervention at opportune moments during a counselling session. Conclusions: The cultural image emerging from the counseling is not only a personal narrative of resource and a tool for the client to externalize the problem and identity representation, but also a cultural narrative reference point for the counselor to understand the case and to engage in further in-depth work. The personal narrative qualitative data can be obtained by referring to four dimensions: external—internal, event—image, narrative—interpretation, and experience—reflection. With the narrative identity of client, the "Nezha" of personal narrative led to the theme that parent-child relationship impedes the development of personal identity. The counselor was thereby enabled to construct a new meaning and new identity with the client by providing appropriate information and knowledge of the cultural narrative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: An experience is narrated in which the subject of care is a pioneer nurse in the discipline of nursing in Colombia who was cared for by a graduate and a colleague, and in which each moment of care and growth is experienced for the cared-for person and the caregivers. Objective: To understand the importance of nursing care to the patient and the nurse by narrating and analyzing a nursing situation. Materials and Methods: The analysis focuses on the concepts of metaparadigm, nursing worldview, patterns of knowing, and Kristen Swanson's middle-range theory of caring. The results are visible in the nurse-patient relationship, the nursing process, the achievement of wholeness and healing, and the experience of the patient's nostalgic farewell. Conclusion: Nursing narratives are relevant to theory, practice, and research because, through them, nursing professionals make known events that are experienced in daily work and make visible the care provided in interaction with others, contributing to the evolution of knowledge of the discipline. Millions of people worldwide have experienced abrupt and traumatic disruption in the flow of their personal life story as a result of stroke and the onset of aphasia. For each one who survives and embarks on the journey toward recovery, their unique and evolving narrative yields gems of wisdom borne of the experience. This wisdom is shared with others through interpersonal narrative exchange and engagement, which foster biographical coherence and provide sources of hope to others on the path toward a productive and fulfilling life. This case study illustrates how a biography-based approach to stakeholder-engaged research merges personal stories in three ways. First, the case illustrates how the personal and professional stories of the candidate research team members merged to form the team through networking over time. Second, the biography-based approach led the team to identify the written personal accounts of 259 people living with aphasia as the raw data set for their research, with the intended goal of mining gems of practical wisdom from these written biographical works. Third, the case illustrates how the biography-based approach draws on the personal stories of in-hospital experiences of research team members with aphasia to prospectively hone the initial research focus. Specifically, the team will tap the collective voice within the written accounts to evaluate the in-hospital experiences of people with aphasia. The ultimate goal will be to catalyze participatory action, in collaboration with transdisciplinary health care providers, to advance responsive, person-centered health care. The authors address challenges and priorities in stakeholder-engaged research team development, the importance of honing a research focus, and the identification of research dissemination venues.
