Abstract

We report the detection by the Astrorivelatore Gamma a Immagini Leggero (AGILE) satellite of terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) obtained with the minicalorimeter (MCAL) detector operating in the energy range 0.3-100 MeV. We select events typically lasting a few milliseconds with spectral and directional selections consistent with the TGF characteristics previously reported by other space missions. During the period 1 June 2008 to 31 March 2009 we detect 34 high-confidence events showing millisecond durations and a geographical distribution peaked over continental Africa and Southeast Asia. For the first time, AGILE-MCAL detects photons associated with TGF events up to 40 MeV. We determine the cumulative spectral properties of the spectrum in the range 0.5-40 MeV, which can be effectively described by a Bremsstrahlung spectrum. We find that both the TGF cumulative spectral properties and their geographical distribution are in good agreement with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) results.

Abstract

Objectives This study sought to evaluate the 30-day and long-term clinical outcomes of patients with carotid obstructive disease (COD) and concomitant coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing a combined percutaneous revascularization, in 4 high-volume centers skilled for the treatment of multilevel vascular disease. Background The optimal management of patients with COD and concomitant CAD remains controversial. A variety of therapeutic strategies, including coronary artery bypass grafting, alone or in combination with carotid artery revascularization, have been reported. Methods Between January 2006 and April 2010, 239 consecutive patients with COD (symptomatic carotid stenosis in 20.5%) and concomitant CAD were treated with staged or simultaneous carotid artery stenting and percutaneous coronary intervention, and enrolled in this prospective registry. The primary endpoint was the incidence of major cardiac and cerebrovascular events, including any death, myocardial infarction, or stroke occurring between the first revascularization procedure and 30 days after treatment of the second vascular territory affected. Results The incidence of the primary endpoint at 30 days was 4.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.02 to 7.56). The rate of death, myocardial infarction, and stroke at long-term follow-up (median 520 days) was 4.2%, 2.1%, and 3.8%, respectively. At long-term follow-up, patients with previous cardiovascular disease had significantly higher rates of major cardiac and cerebrovascular events than did patients with a first clinical episode (17% vs. 6%, hazard ratio: 3.34; 95% CI: 1.46 to 7.63; p = 0.004). Conclusions In patients with COD and concomitant CAD, a combined percutaneous treatment compares favorably with previous surgical or hybrid experiences. Such strategy may be particularly suited to complex patients at high surgical risk.

Abstract

Launched on 2021 December 9, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer Mission in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The mission will open a new window of investigation—imaging x-ray polarimetry. The observatory features three identical telescopes, each consisting of a mirror module assembly with a polarization-sensitive imaging x-ray detector at the focus. A coilable boom, deployed on orbit, provides the necessary 4-m focal length. The observatory utilizes a three-axis-stabilized spacecraft, which provides services such as power, attitude determination and control, commanding, and telemetry to the ground. During its 2-year baseline mission, IXPE will conduct precise polarimetry for samples of multiple categories of x-ray sources, with follow-on observations of selected targets.

Abstract

FRB 180916 is a most intriguing source at 150 Mpc distance capable of producing repeating fast radio bursts with a periodic 16.35 day temporal pattern. We report on the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray observations of FRB 180916 obtained by AGILE and Swift. We focused on the recurrent 5-day time intervals of active radio bursting and present results obtained on Feb. 3 - 8; Feb. 25; Mar. 5 - 10; Mar. 22 - 28, 2020 during a multiwavelength campaign involving high-energy and radio observations. We also searched for temporal coincidences at millisecond timescales between all known radio bursts of FRB 180916 and X-ray and MeV events detectable by AGILE. We do not detect any simultaneous event or any extended X-ray and $\gamma$-ray emission on timescales of hours/days/weeks. Our cumulative X-ray (0.3-10 keV) flux upper limit of $5 \times\,10^{-14} \rm \, erg \, cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ (obtained during 5-day active intervals) translates into an isotropic luminosity upper limit of $L_{X,UL} \sim 1.5 \times\, 10^{41} \rm erg \, s^{-1}$. Observations above 100 MeV over a many-year timescale provide an average luminosity upper limit one order of magnitude larger. These results provide the so-far most stringent limits on high-energy emission from FRB 180916 and constrain the dissipation of magnetic energy from a magnetar-like source of radius $R_m$, internal magnetic field $B_m$ and dissipation timescale $\tau_d$ to satisfy the relation $R_{m,6}^3 B_{m,16}^2 \tau_{d,8}^{-1} \lesssim 1$, where $R_{m,6}$ is $R_m$ in units of $10^6$ cm, $B_{m,16}$ is $B_m$ in units of $10^{16}$ G, and $\tau_{d,8}$ in units of $10^8$ s., Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal Letters on April 5, 2020
