4. Awareness, Knowledge and Exercise of Individual Employment Rights. Employment Relations Research Series.

Abstract

Recent employment law reforms in England precipitated a telephone survey of a stratified random sample of 5,120 employed people (1,000 respondents) that was intended to find their levels of awareness and knowledge of employment rights and their exercise of those rights. Survey results included the following: (1) nearly 70% of those questioned assess themselves as well-informed or very well-informed about employment rights in general; (2) of laws known by respondents, the most commonly cited related to working time, health and safety, and discrimination; (3) while women assessed their awareness/knowledge as higher than men, the latter were more likely to name an employment right; (4) levels of awareness peaked in the 36-45 age group and among those with the highest level of education; (5) levels of awareness/knowledge were highest among managers and professionals, and among permanent employees and trade union members; (6) 16% of respondents experienced problems at work in relation to employment rights in the previous five years; (7) non-whites were nearly twice as likely to report work problems; and (8) older respondents and those with a work contract were much less likely to report having experienced problems. Because of the relatively small numbers who had experienced infringements of their rights, only limited conclusions could be drawn about whether a lack of awareness/knowledge disenfranchises people in achieving their employment rights. 5. Measurement of Employment in High Technology Sectors at the Regional Level. Report 318.

Abstract

A study examined the feasibility of measuring employment in high-technology sectors at the regional level. First, the effect of definition of the term "high-technology" on survey results was considered along with potential effects of using 2- and 3-digit classifications of technology occupations from the Nomenclature of Economic Activities in the European Union (NACE). Methodological issues involved in using the United Kingdom (UK) Labour Force Survey (LFS) to measure high-technology employment at the regional level were studied by using microdata from the LFS and data from the UK Census of Employment. The use of establishment surveys and censuses as an alternative method of deriving high-technology employment figures and the degree of clustering exhibited by high-technology employment were analyzed. Results of an analysis of the LFS, including results from France, Italy, and Spain, were detailed. (Contains 41 tables/figures and 55 references. 6. The effect of heavy metal contamination on estuarine benthic fauna at varying levels of biological organisation

Abstract

Biological monitoring techniques, selected to cover increasing levels of biological organisation (cellular, individual, population and community), were compared and contrasted to determine the relative sensitivities of these approaches to heavy metal contammation. The study was centred on the Fal Estuary in Cornwall, an ideal experimental field site-with well documented heavy metal contamination resulting firom the long-term discharge of waste from a local tin mine. Five creeks leadmg from the estuary differ dramatically in the concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments, but little in natural environmental variables (sediment granulometry, salinity etc.). The contaminant induced damage was evaluated at the cellular level in Mytilus edulis by the Neutral Red Assay to detect lysosomal membrane damage. Parameters of the energy budget of this species were determined to estmiate 'Scope for Growth' of mdividuals. along with a Larval Survival assay to estabUsh their reproductive and developmental success. At the population level. Cohort Growth studies were undertaken using the polychaete Nephtys hombergi. At the community level, data firom an extensive three year survey of benthic macrofauna structure were analysed. In addition to investigating biological parameters, contammant levels in sedunent and tissue were determuied using Atomic Absorption Spectrommetry. All techniques, except the population level, detected the extreme pollution of the most contaminated creek, Restronguet, but did not accurately reflect the known metal gradient. However, community studies established distinct macrofaunal assemblages between both sites and years. Techniques were compared and validated in a novel approach using the program BIOENV, with the multivariate analysis package PRIMER (Plymouth Routines in Multivariate Ecological Research). The cellular assay correlated reasonably well agamst the heavy metal levels, the larval survival assay correlated well to the community structure. However, the community structure approach was the most sensitive and relevant monitoring method to determme the long-term contamination of the Fal Estuary.

This report consists of the monthly and annual summaries of meteorological data measured at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden, UK, from January 2011 until December 2011., Daily measurements are taken at Rothamsted Meteorological Station. These data are summarised monthly and annually as a report., Monthly and summaries and annual summary of rainfall, temperature, sun hours and numbers of ground frosts for 2011. Variation noted in comparison to 30-year means 1981-2010., Measurements: Rainfall - Total monthly rainfall including all precipitation (snow, rain, mist and fog) captured in a 12.7 cm rain gauge (mm per month); numbers of days with rain (0.2mm or more); the day with the maximum daily rainfall for that month. Sun shine: the total hours of sunshine recorded for the month; the day with most hours of sunshine; days when no sunshine recorded. Air temperature: the average maximum and average minimum air temperature (degrees C) for the month; the warmest day; the coldest day for the month. Frost: Numbers of air or ground frosts. The average refers to the 30-year mean 1981-2010., The summary report is derived from daily data measured at Rothamsted Research. Teses original raw data are available from the e-RA database. Daily data verification includes checks for instrument errors, missing data and outliers. These weather summaries are reported in the local Harpenden press on a monthly basis.

Abstract

Long-term field experiments (LTEs) play an important role in studying the effects of different management strategies on the soil ecosystem. However, LTEs are very diverse regarding location, duration, experimental design or research question. Therefore, in October 2020, experts on LTEs from five different European countries met in a virtual workshop to discuss how to ensure high quality in LTE research. Recommendations for the implementation and use of LTEs were drawn from the presentations and discussions based on the following topics: (1) design and statistical evaluation, (2) soil and plant parameters, (3) requirements for data archiving and modelling as well as (4) data management and repository. Furthermore, it was concluded, that international networks enable joint analyses of LTEs to gain a better understanding of long-term changes in crop production at different climate conditions. This knowledge can help to develop sustainable agricultural management strategies. Consequently, a close collaboration among different groups like BonaRes, GLTEN and IOSDV can strengthen the validity of LTE research.

Abstract

Members of ethnic minority groups now account for almost one in eight of all students living in the UK. However, there is still considerable variation within and between ethnic groups in the extent of participation in higher education. Ethnic minorities are most likely to study at 'new' universities, where in some cases they account for more than 30% of undergraduates. At 'traditional' universities, their representation is below the sector average. The largest ethnic minority group at first degree level is Indians, with Bangladeshis being the smallest group.

Abstract

A survey of 34,400 staff in 59 London trusts found general dissatisfaction with pay but satisfaction with immediate managers, equal opportunities and communications. A good working relationship with an immediate manager emerged as key to feeling valued. The better the communications in a trust, the more staff felt valued. Forty-two per cent of respondents--14,000 people--did not have a personal development plan and had not had an appraisal, leaving them outside major career development systems. This left them dissatisfied.
