7. Diversity, Distribution, and Evolution of Bioluminescent Fungi.

Abstract

All known bioluminescent fungi are basidiomycetes belonging to the Agaricales. They emit 520–530 nm wavelength light 24 h per day in a circadian rhythm. The number of known bioluminescent fungi has more than doubled in the past 15 years from 64 to 132 species. We currently recognize five distinct lineages of bioluminescent Agaricales belonging to the Omphalotaceae (18 species), Physalacriaceae (14), Mycenaceae (96), Lucentipes lineage (3), and Cyphellopsidaceae (1). They are distributed across the globe with the highest diversity occurring on woody or leafy substrates in subtropical closed canopy forests with high plant diversity. With the caveat that most regions of the world have not been extensively sampled for bioluminescent fungi, the areas with the most known species are Japan (36), South America (30), North America (27), Malesia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia (26), Europe (23), Central America (21), China (13), Africa (10), Australasia, Papua New Guinea, and New Caledonia (11), and the Pacific Islands (5). Recent studies have elucidated the biochemical and genetic pathways of fungal bioluminescence and suggest the phenomenon originated a single time early in the evolution of the Agaricales. Multiple independent evolutionary losses explain the absence of luminescence in many species found within the five lineages and in the majority of Agaricales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Inferring Network Infrastructure and Session Information through Network Analysis

Abstract

1 AbstractAn adversary can be a resourceful entity that can obtain information (i.g. infrastructure design) that isintentionally hidden in order to prevent a vast array of exploitations from occurring. Similarly, an adversarycan be seen as a monitoring entity preventing the users from freely accessing the Internet via the network’sdesign. This leads us to our questions in two fold. Does a reconnaissance methodology exists to infer theload balancing algorithm operating within a network’s infrastructure, and can network sessions be identifiedby an adversary (monitoring entity) with and without protocol obfuscation?Software-Defined Networking (SDN) was used to construct a network with a load balancing algorithm,because it separates the control plane and the data plane. The control plane performs all of the routingdecisions for the network through the use of a special device called a controller. This controller is a verycritical aspect of the network so we decided to build an SDN network with multiple controllers with a loadbalancing algorithm to distribute the processing load. We performed a controller side-channel attack toanalyze a packet’s response time in order to 1) determine the number of controllers operating within an SDNnetwork, 2) inherently determine the load balancing algorithm utilized, and 3) identify the OS scheduler asthe environment’s bottleneck.We decided to expand the ability to mask information from an adversary or monitoring entity by studyingprotocol obfuscation. We focused our efforts on protocol obfuscation over encryption because it can bedifficult for a monitoring entity to determine the utilization of protocol obfuscation over a connection’sutilization of encryption. To be precise, we obfuscated the SSH protocol through the exchange of PDFs.We examined how a monitoring entity (aka an adversary) can classify a SSH session with and without PDFobfuscation based on the characteristics of the protocol. Throughout our experiments we noticed someinter-packet delay characteristics that constantly appeared within the environments, but the packet sizecharacteristics proved to be a reliable metric for analysis because of the similar patterns seen throughoutthe environments and network sessions. We argue an obfuscation program has to hide the target data andthe target protocol’s characteristics so that a user can completely and holistically hide their network sessionfrom a monitoring entity.

Abstract

BackgroundLow back pain is a common cause of chronic pain in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. The American College of Physicians and American Pain Society guidelines for diagnostic imaging in low back pain are difficult to apply to patients with chronic illnesses like HIV who may have risk factors for cancer or compression fractures, but whether imaging all such patients for low back pain improves outcomes is unknown.ObjectiveOur objective was to describe patients referred to a chronic pain-focused HIV/palliative care clinic (HPCC) with back pain and their associated lumbar spine imaging findings.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective chart review of patients at a palliative care clinic that sees patients with HIV, most of whom have chronic pain. Charts with a diagnosis of low back pain were cross-referenced with an imaging database and any magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar spine with or without contrast were identified.ResultsSeventy-six of 137 patients referred to the HPCC were found to have back pain. These patients were mainly young (median age 45, interquartile range 40-51) with well-controlled HIV. Twenty-two (29%) of these patients had an MRI of the lumbar spine, and 11 (50%) of these warranted follow-up, most of whom had degenerative disc disease, including four with findings concerning for malignancy.DiscussionThis is the first study to explore the role of spinal imaging in HIV-infected patients. In our study, four patients had findings concerning for malignancy. These findings suggest that spinal imaging should be considered in the work up of HIV-infected patients with moderate to severe back pain.

Abstract

Pine species have become invasive throughout the globe and threaten to replace native biota. The threat of pine invasion is particularly pressing in parts of the tropics where there are no native pines. The factors that govern pine invasion are not often well understood. However, key to pine survival is an obligate and mutualistic interaction with ectomycorrhizal fungi. Thus for pines to successfully invade new habitats compatible ectomycorrhizal fungi must already be present, or be co-introduced. The purpose of this study was to examine the community structure of non-native ectomycorrhizal fungi associated with pine invasions in the Hawaiian Islands. To accomplish this we executed a field and greenhouse study and used a molecular ecology approach to identify the fungi associating with invasive pines in Hawai‘i. We show that: (1) ectomycorrhizal fungal species richness in non-native pine plantations is far less than what is found in pine’s native range, (2) there was a significant decrease in average ectomycorrhizal fungal species richness as distance from pine plantations increased and, (3) Suillus species were the dominant fungi colonizing pines outside plantations. The keystone ectomycorrhizal fungal taxa responsible for pine establishment in Hawai‘i are within genera commonly associated with pine invasions throughout the globe. We surmise that these fungi share functional traits such as the ability for long-distance dispersal from plantations and host tree colonization via spore that lead to their success when introduced to new habitats.

BackgroundMany HIV-infected patients in the current treatment era have substantial symptom burden, but few HIV palliative care clinics have been described. Our objective was to describe the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) HIV palliative care clinic (HPCC) and compare it to the overall HIV clinic.MethodsWe conducted a chart review of patients referred to the HPCC between April 2008 and June 2011. We evaluated the reason for referral and other issues addressed during palliative care visits. Patient Reported Outcome (PRO) data was used to assess depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (PHQ-A), and substance abuse (ASSIST).ResultsAmong 124 patients, mean age was 44 (range 27-64), and median CD4 count was 352 cells/mm(3) (IQR 209-639). Abstract

BackgroundThe successful adoption of mobile technology for use in clinical trials relies on positive reception from key stakeholders, including clinical investigators; however, little information is known about the perspectives of investigators using mobile technologies in clinical trials. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to seek investigators’ insights on the advantages and challenges of mobile clinical trials (MCTs); site-level budgetary, training, and other support needs necessary to adequately prepare for and implement MCTs; and the advantages and disadvantages for trial participants using mobile technologies in clinical trials. MethodsUsing a qualitative descriptive study design, we conducted in-depth interviews with investigators involved in the conduct of MCTs. Data were analyzed using applied thematic analysis. ResultsWe interviewed 12 investigators who represented a wide variety of clinical specialties and reported using a wide range of mobile technologies. Investigators most commonly cited 3 advantages of MCTs over traditional clinical trials: more streamlined study operations, remote data capture, and improvement in the quality of studies and data collected. Investigators also reported that MCTs can be designed around the convenience of trial participants, and individuals may be more willing to participate in MCTs because they can take part from their homes. In addition, investigators recognized that MCTs can also involve additional burden for participants and described that operational challenges, technology adoption barriers, uncertainties about data quality, and time burden made MCTs more challenging than traditional clinical trials. Investigators stressed that additional training and dedicated staff effort may be needed to select a particular technology for use in a trial, helping trial participants learn and use the technology, and for staff troubleshooting the technology. Investigators also expressed that sharing data collected in real time with investigators and trial participants is an important aspect of MCTs that warrants consideration and potentially additional training and education. ConclusionsInvestigator perspectives can inform the use of mobile technologies in future clinical trials by proactively identifying and addressing potential challenges.

44. Tests of the Validity and Reliability of the Community Service Attitudes Scale

Abstract

Community service is deeply rooted in American culture. There have been repeated calls for the necessity of evaluating these programs, especially for service-learning. The purpose of this research was to validate an easy-to-use scale that measures 10 components of students' attitudes toward community service. The sample was drawn from two populations. First, college students who participated in a national alternative break leadership conference (n = 71) were recruited. Second, college students and recent graduates enrolled at a regional university in the southeast (n = 105) were recruited from psychology courses and from the Greek system. From these samples, three groups were formed: participants who had been involved in alternative breaks, participants who were members of the Greek system, and participants who were not involved in either alternative breaks or Greek organizations. Participants were asked if they had performed volunteer experience in the last 12 months, and 94%, 95%, and 41%, respectively, of each group had volunteered. The number of students participating in service activities on campuses has been growing steadily. With the current study, the Community Service Attitudes Scale has shown to be a valid measure of attitudes toward community service.
