Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
New levels were attributed to $^{81}\_{31}$Ga$\_{50}$ and $^{83}\_{32}$Ge$\_{51}$ which were fed by the $\beta$-decay of their respective mother nuclei $^{81}\_{30}$Zn$\_{51}$ and $^{83}\_{31}$Ga$\_{52}$ produced by fission at the "PARRNe" ISOL set-up installed at the Tandem accelerator of the Institut de Physique Nucl\'eaire, Orsay. We show that the low energy structure of $^{81}\_{31}$Ga$\_{50}$ and $^{83}\_{32}$Ge$\_{51}$ can easily be explained within the natural hypothesis of a strong energy gap at N=50 and a doubly-magic character for $^{78}$Ni., Comment: 2 pages, pdf file, To be published in the Proceedings of "International Symposium on Structure of Exotic Nuclei and Nuclear Forces (SENUF 06)", March 2006, Tokyo, Japan

Expérience GANIL E243b (décembre 2003), spectromètre LISE2000; A decay spectroscopic study of the neutron-rich isotopes, has been performed using fragmentation of a 86Kr primary beam. Fragments from this reaction have been selected by the LISE2000 spectrometer at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL). Half-lives of 29 isotopes, including the first ones identified for 61Ti (15 ± 4 ms), 64V (19 ± 8 ms), and 71Fe (28 ± 5 ms), have been determined and compared with model predictions. 67,68Mn $\beta$ -delayed $\gamma$-rays were observed for the first time. The branching for the $\beta$ -delayed neutron emission was measured to be greater than 10(5)% in the 67Mn decay. The 67Fe isomeric level is firmly determined at higher energy than assigned in previous works. The excitation energies of the first (2+) and (4+) states of 68Fe are suggested to lie at 522(1)- and 1389(1)-keV, respectively, thus bringing confirmation of assignments based on in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. Beyond mean-field calculations with the Gogny D1S force have been performed for even-mass nuclei through the Fe isotopic chain. Not only 68Fe but most of the neutron-rich Fe isotopes with neutron numbers below N = 50 are interpreted as soft rotors. The calculated mean occupancy of the neutron g9/2 and d5/2 orbitals in correlated ground states are steadily growing with increasing neutron number throughout the isotopic chain. Interpretation of 67Fe data is based upon present calculations for the 66Fe and 68Fe even cores.

New sub-mu s isomers have been observed in the neutron-rich Sn isotopes. Sn-125,Sn-127,Sn-129 nuclei have been produced in a relativistic fission reaction of U-238 on a Be-9 target at 750 A.MeV and by the fragmentation of Xe-136 at 600 A.MeV populating high-spin yrast states. In addition to the already known mu s isomers, three new ones with sub-mu s half-lives have been observed. These yrast isomers are the high-spin members of the nu(d(3/2)(-1)h(11/2)(-2)) and nu h(11/2)(-n), seniority v = 3 multiplets leading to isomeric (23/2(+)) and (27/2(-)) states, respectively. Added to the already known 19/2(+)mu s isomers in this region the current work completes the systematic information of neutron-hole excitations toward the filling of the last h(11/2) orbital at N = 82. The results are discussed in the framework of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations using realistic interactions. ispartof: Physical Review C, Nuclear Physics vol:77 issue:6 pages:1-15 status: published

The energy of the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-78 could be firmly established and for the first time the 2(+)-> 0(1)(+) transition in Zn-80 was observed at 1492(1) keV. B(E2,2(1)(+)-> 0(1)(+)) values were extracted for Zn-74,Zn-76,Zn-78,Zn-80 and compared to large scale shell model calculations. With only two protons outside the Z=28 proton core, Zn-80 is the lightest N=50 isotone for which spectroscopic information has been obtained to date. Two sets of advanced shell model calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus Ni-78. ispartof: Physical Review Letters vol:99 issue:14 pages:1-4 ispartof: location:United States status: published

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of quadrupole moment measurements on isomeric levels populated in projectile fragmentation reactions. The neutron-rich Fe-61(9/2(+)) [E-*= 861 keV, T-1/2= 239(5) ns] isomer was produced and spin aligned by the intermediate energy fragmentation of a Ni-64 beam and implanted in a Cd single crystal. Its spectroscopic quadrupole moment Q(s)=41(6) e fm(2) agrees with mean-field based calculations using the finite-range Gogny force, suggesting a moderately deformed shape characterized by an intrinsic charge quadrupole moment Q(0)=-85 e fm(2) or Q(0)=+115 e fm(2). The present measurement paves the way for future determinations of isomeric quadrupole moments in more exotic nuclei. ispartof: Physical Review C, Nuclear physics vol:75 issue:5 pages:1-4 status: published

Excited levels were attributed to $^{81}_{31}$Ga$_{50}$ for the first time which were fed in the $\beta$-decay of its mother nucleus $^{81}$Zn produced in the fission of $^{nat}$U using the ISOL technique. We show that the structure of this nucleus is consistent with that of the less exotic proton-deficient N=50 isotones within the assumption of strong proton Z=28 and neutron N=50 effective shell effects., Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX 4, 5 figures (eps format)

NESTER; The γ-ray de-excitations following the β-decay of 83Ga and the β-n decay of 84Ga have been studied. The radioactive species were produced using the PARRNe on-line mass-separator installed at the IPN Orsay Tandem accelerator. Two γ-lines were attributed to 83Ge with the aid of β-γ and γ-γ coincidences. The Z identification of the γ-lines was provided by time analysis of a buid-up/decay cycle. The excited levels of 83Ge can be explained by the coupling of the single neutron state ν2d 5/2 to the first 2+ excitation of the 82Ge core.

GANIL Expérience; The reduced transition probabilities B(E2;0+\rightarrow 2+_1) of the neutron-rich 74Zn and 70Ni nuclei have been measured by Coulomb excitation in a 208Pb target at intermediate energy. These nuclei have been produced at Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds via interactions of a 60A MeV 76Ge beam with a Be target. The B(E2) value for 70Ni_42 is unexpectedly large, which indicates that neutrons added above N=40 strongly polarize the Z=28 proton core. In the Zn isotopic chain, the steep rise of B(E2) values beyond N=40 continues up to 74Zn 44. The enhanced proton core polarization in 70Ni is attributed to the monopole interaction between the neutron in the g_9/2 and protons in the f_7/2 and f_5/2 spin-orbit partner orbitals. This interaction could result in a weakening of magicity in 78Ni_50.

An island of isomers have recently been observed on both sides of the N=40 shell below the Ni isotopes. Isomeric states in the $^{65}$Fe and $^{67}$Fe allow the knowledge of the single particle structure around the $\nu$g_9/2$ shell. Moreover, the excitation energy of the first $2^+$ and $4^+$ states in the $^{68}$Fe have been established by $\beta$-$\gamma$ correlation. The evolution of the structure of the Fe isotopes going far away from the valley of stability is, for the first time, given for N>40

- Abstract
Within the RISING (Rare ISotope INvestigations @ GSI) Collabora-tion at GSI, g factor measurements have been performed on isomeric states in neutron-rich isotopes approaching 132 Sn and in the neutron deficient Pb-region (the g-RISING campaign). We present the experimental technique and some typical aspects related to such studies on relativistic beams selected with the FRS fragment separator. First results are presented for the (19/2+ ) 4.5 µs isomeric state in 127 Sn, which has been produced by means of fission of a relativistic 238 U beam on the one hand, and by the fragmentation of a relativistic 136 Xe beam on the other hand. Spin-alignment has been observed in both reactions. It was the first time that spin-alignment has been established in a relativistic fission reaction.
