The architecture for cooperative heterogenous on-line systems (Archon) provides a software framework that helps in the interactions between subcomponents of a distributed artificial intelligence. It also designs a methodology for structuring of these interactions. The problem solving entities of Archon, known as agents, control their own domain-level problem solving tasks and their interactions with other agents. Monitoring units are the smallest level of control in the agent's social know-how. The agent information management module stores the agent models and domain-level data.

The architecture for cooperative heterogeneous on-line systems (Archon) software framework integrates two preexisting systems to give distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) application. This application controls and diagnoses faults in the proton synchrotron particle accelerators. The DAI system provides a broader view of the particle accelerator's operation and yields coherent results. The method allows easy maintenance and development of the subsystems due to their separate nature.
