Summary: The Cape Parrot Poicephalus robustus is a habitat specialist, restricted to forest patches in the Eastern Cape (EC), KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Limpopo provinces of South Africa. Recent census estimates suggest that there are less than 1,600 parrots left in the wild, although historical data suggest that the species was once more numerous. Fragmentation of the forest biome is strongly linked to climate change and exploitation of the forest by the timber industry. We examine the subpopulation structure and connectivity between fragmented populations across the distribution of the species. Differences in historical and contemporary genetic structure of Cape Parrots is examined by including both modern samples, collected from 1951 to 2014, and historical samples, collected from 1870 to 1946. A total of 114 individuals (historical = 29; contemporary = 85) were genotyped using 16 microsatellite loci. We tested for evidence of partitioning of genotypes at both a temporal and spatial scales by comparing shifts in allelic frequencies of historical (1870–1946) and contemporary (1951–2014) samples across the distribution of the species. Tests for population bottlenecks were also conducted to determine if anthropogenic causes are the main driver of population decline in this species. Analyses identified three geographically correlated genetic clusters. A southern group restricted to forest patches in the EC, a central group including birds from KZN and a genetically distinct northern Limpopo cluster. Results suggest that Cape Parrots have experienced at least two population bottlenecks. An ancient decline during the mid-Holocene (∼ 1,800-3,000 years before present) linked to climate change, and a more recent bottleneck, associated with logging of forests during the early 1900s. This study highlights the effects of climate change and human activities on an endangered species associated with the naturally fragmented forests of eastern South Africa. These results will aid conservation authorities with the planning and implementation of future conservation initiatives. In particular, this study emphasises the Eastern Cape mistbelt forests as an important source population for the species and calls for stronger conservation of forest patches in South Africa to promote connectivity of forest taxa. Use of poison to kill wildlife is a threat to biodiversity. Lilian's lovebirds Agapornis lilianae are among the fatalities at poisoned waterholes in Liwonde National Park, Malawi. Their population in Liwonde National Park ( LNP) represents about 20% of the global population. We investigated the drinking habits of Lilian's lovebird, availability of natural waterholes and occurrence of poisoning incidents in LNP. Results showed Lilian's lovebirds congregate at waterholes in the dry season with flocks ranging from 1 to 100 individuals. Significantly larger flocks were seen in the dry than the wet season. Poisoning incidents/year ranged from 1 to 8 and were highest in the dry season. Lilian's lovebirds were killed at a mean of four poisoning incidents each year between 2000 and 2012. Number of lovebirds found dead at a poisoned pool ranged from 5 to 50 individuals. Currently about 32% of the Lilian's lovebird population is threatened by poisoning. Other species were also noted. Twenty-two polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized in the Cape parrot, Poicephalus robustus. Nineteen loci were newly isolated from two Cape parrot genomic libraries, and three loci isolated from other parrot species. Loci were characterized in 40 unrelated captive Cape parrots held by aviculturalists. The loci displayed between two and 24 alleles, with the observed heterozygosities ranging between 0.10 and 0.94. This locus set is suitable for identifying clarifying parentage (parentage exclusion probabilities of PE1 = 0.0004 and PE2 = 0.000001). Candidate parents for any Cape parrot individual can now be genotyped to distinguish between individuals, which are truly captive bred and those suspected of being wild-caught birds. This study determined the abundance and status of the endangered Cape parrot which is endemic to South Africa. Numbers and presence were unpredictable at forest patches in the Eastern Cape (including Transkei), Northern Province, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. Flock size usually comprised one or two birds and was rarely greater than ten. Large flocks concentrated at roost sites, water points or fruiting trees, and represented aggregations of several smaller groups. Present distributions in forest fragments reflect past distribution in a large mosaic of forest patches. Density estimates based on a census of forests, questionnaires and communications show that numbers are exceedingly low and the best estimate of numbers is 300 birds in the Eastern Cape, 150 in KwaZulu-Natal, and <50 in the Transvaal Drakensberg. This suggests about 500 Cape parrots remaining in the wild. Fewer than 200 Cape parrots were observed during an intensive national survey which comprised 66 groups of observers in the major forests of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
