Abstract

EXAFS analysis of pure elements, binary and ternary equiatomic refractory alloys within the Nb-Zr-Ti-Hf-Ta system is performed at the Nb and Zr K-edges to analyze the evolution of the chemical local environment and the lattice distortion. A good mixing of the elements is found at the atomic scale. For some compounds, a distribution of distances between the central atom and its neighbors suggests a distortion of the structure. Finally, analysis of the Debye-Waller parameters show some correlation with the lattice distortion parameter $\delta ^2$, and allows to quantify experimentally the static disorder in medium entropy alloys.

Abstract

Tracer diffusion of all constituting elements is studied at various temperatures in a series of (CoCrFeMn)$_{100-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys with compositions ranging from pure Ni to the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy. At a given homologous temperature, the measured tracer diffusion coefficients change non-monotonically along the transition from pure Ni to the concentrated alloys and finally to the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi alloy. This is explained by atomistic Monte-Carlo simulations based on a modified embedded-atom potentials, which reveal that local heterogeneities of the atomic configurations around a vacancy cause correlation effects and induce significant deviations from predictions of the random alloy model., Comment: 16 pages; 10 figures

14. From single phase to dual-phase TRIP-TWIP titanium alloys for the improvement of the yield strength

Abstract

Aiming at increasing the yield strength of transformation and twinning induced plasticity (TRIP and TWIP) titanium alloys, a dual-phase $\alpha$/$\beta$ alloy is designed and studied. The composition Ti 7Cr 1.5Sn (wt.%) is proposed, based on an approach coupling Calphad calculations and classical Bo-Md design tool used in Ti-alloys. Its microstructure is made of 20% of $\alpha$ precipitates in a $\beta$ matrix, the matrix having optimal Bo and Md parameters for deformation twinning and martensitic transformation. The alloy indeed displays a yield strength of 760 MPa, about 200 MPa above that of a Ti 8.5Cr 1.5Sn (wt.%) single beta phase TRIP/TWIP alloy, combined with good ductility and work-hardening. In situ synchrotron X ray diffraction and post-mortem electron back-scattered analyses are performed to characterize the deformation mechanisms. They evidence that the TRIP and TWIP mechanisms are successfully obtained in the material, validating the design strategy. The interaction of the precipitates with the {332}<113> $\beta$ twins is analyzed, evidencing that the precipitates are sheared when hit by a twin, and therefore do not hinder the propagation of the twins. Abstract

Triggering transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) and twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) mechanisms in metastable β titanium alloys (bcc, body centered cubic) have helped reaching unprecedented mechanical properties for Ti-alloys, including high ductility and work-hardening. Yet the yield strength of such alloys generally remains rather low. So far, mostly single-phase metastable bcc alloys have been developed. In this study, a dual phase TRIP/TWIP alloy is designed and investigated. While the β-matrix is expected to display TRIP/TWIP deformation mechanisms, the addition of a second phase, α in the present study, aims at increasing the yield strength. The composition was designed in the Ti-Cr-Sn system, based on Calphad prediction and on the semi-empirical d-electron alloy design approach. Results were compared to the published full β Ti – 8.5Cr – 1.5Sn (wt%) TRIP/TWIP alloy. The dual-phase alloy was prepared and processed to reach the desired microstructure containing about 20% α. It displays remarkable mechanical properties such as a ductility of 29%, an ultimate tensile strength of 1200 MPa and a yield strength of 760 MPa, 200MPa higher than the Reference single-phase β alloy. Analysis of the mechanical properties and deformation microstructures confirm the TRIP and TWIP effects, validating the proposed approach.

Abstract

International audience; This work concerns the sintering of tungsten-based (i.e WMoTaNb) high entropy alloy (HEA) powders using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique and their mechanical properties. The synthesis was performed by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) type reaction in which the mixture of metallic oxides (WO3, MoO3 …) is reduced by magnesium. For this, a specific reactor has been developed. Different conditions including the addition of a moderator were tested. These powders are then densified by SPS technology which allows for keeping the initial microstructure of the powder. The optimization of sintering conditions was performed with the objective to control simultaneously the chemical composition, the grain growth and the densification stages.

Abstract

Depth variation at constant load in instrumented nano-indentation was used to measure activation volume controlling shear band formation in the Mg65Cu12.5Ni12.5(Ce75La25)10 metallic glass. A series of measurements revealed a large scattering of the data spanning from 100 Å3 to 800 Å3. The distribution of values, which is not following a normal one, may be attributed to the atomic structure of metallic glasses with the absence of long range order, leading to different volume fraction of shear bands for independent experiments. Activation volume is analyzed considering the variation of shear band volume fraction leading to a unique value of a true activation volume.
