Iron-based biochar exhibits great potential in degrading emerging pollutants and remediation of water environments. In this study, a highly efficient catalytic Fe 0 /biochar (MZB-800) was synthesized by the co-pyrolysis of poplar sawdust and K 2 FeO 4 at 800 °C. A novel water purification technology of pre-reduction followed by PMS activation for MZB-800 was proposed to degrade the refractory 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) pesticide. The corrosive effect of the strong oxidizing potassium salt endowed the MZB-800 surface with more Fe 0 and porous structure, achieving greater 2,4-D adsorption binding energy. The removal efficiency of MZB-800 on 2,4-D was greater than that of biochar (BC) and conventional Fe 0 /biochar (Fe-BC) prepared by FeCl 3 ·6 H 2 O as the precursor. The proposed novel water purification technology showed the synergistic effect between the interfacial pre-reduction and the PMS activation derived by MZB-800. Regarding 2,4-D degradation and dechlorination performance, the synergistic coefficient between pre-reduction and subsequent PMS activation for MZB-800 were 2 and 1.4 respectively. Based on the normalized kinetic analysis and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, we proposed the underlying mechanism of MZB-800 interfacial pre-reduction and subsequent PMS activation for synergistic removal of 2,4-D. The large amount of Fe 2+ and hydroxyl density accumulated by the Fe 0 and hydroquinone structures on the MZB-800 surface during the pre-reduction stage provided abundant active sites for the subsequent activation of PMS. The improved activation reaction rate generated more reactive oxygen species, further strengthening the removal efficiency of 2,4-D. This work manifested that the novel water purification technology of pre-reduction/PMS activation of iron-based biochar is feasible for removing emerging pollutants in the water environment. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a widely occurring substance in rivers that can strongly complex with heavy metal ions (HMIs), severely interfering with the electrochemical signal of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) and reducing the detection accuracy of HMIs in water. In this study, we investigated a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) that involves the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using low-pressure ultraviolet (LPUV) radiation and CoFe 2 O 4 photocatalysis. This novel AOP was used for the first time as an effective pretreatment method to break or weaken the complexation between HMIs and DOM, thereby restoring the electrochemical signals of HMIs. The key parameters, including the PMS concentration, CoFe 2 O 4 concentration, and photolysis time, were optimized to be 6 mg/L, 12 mg/L, and 30 s for eliminating DOM interference during the electrochemical analysis of HMIs via LPUV/CoFe 2 O 4 -based photolysis. Investigations of the microstructure, surface morphology, specific surface area, and pore volume of CoFe 2 O 4 were conducted to reveal the exceptional signal recovery capability of LPUV/CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS-based photolysis in mitigating interference from DOM during HMIs analysis. The PMS activation mechanism, which is critical to the signal recovery process, was elucidated by analyzing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the surface elemental composition of CoFe 2 O 4 . Additionally, the degradation and transformation behavior of humus-HMIs complexes were analyzed to study the mechanism of ASV signal recovery further. In this study, a UV-driven photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was constructed using bimetallic metal-organic frameworks to degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Mn-MIL-53(Fe) was successfully synthesised by adjusting the doping ratio of Mn using solvothermal method. The removal of ibuprofen (IBP) by UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process was as high as 79.7% in 30 min with a Mn doping ratio of 1.0 (molar ratio of Mn to Fe), and the reaction rate constant was 26.9% higher than undoped. Mn-MIL-53(Fe) had been systematically characterized in terms of its physical structure, microscopic morphology, surface functional groups and photoelectric properties. The mechanism investigation revealed that the cycling of Mn and Fe accelerated the rate of electron transfer in the system, which significantly increased the activation efficacy of PMS to generate more hydroxyl and sulfate radicals for IBP degradation. A total of 13 transformation products were detected during the degradation of IBP by the UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process. Theoretical calculations were used to predict the sites on the IBP molecule that were vulnerable to attack, and four possible degradation pathways were deduced. As the rapidly growing number of waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the recycling and reutilization of anode graphite is of increasing interest. Converting waste anode graphite into functional materials may be a sensible option. Herein, a series of carbonaceous catalysts (TG) were successfully prepared using spent anode graphite calcined at various temperatures and applied for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade atrazine (ATZ). The catalyst obtained at 800 °C (TG-800) showed the optimum performance for ATZ removal (99.2% in 6 min). Various experimental conditions were explored to achieve the optimum efficiency of the system. In the TG-800/PMS system, free radicals (e.g., SO 4 ·- , HO·), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), together with a direct electron transfer pathway all participated in ATZ degradation, and the ketonic (CO) group was proved as the leading catalytic site for PMS activation. The potential degradation routes of ATZ have also been presented. According to the toxicity assessment experiments, the toxicity of the intermediate products decreased. The reusability and universal applicability of the TG-800 were also confirmed. This study developed a novel process named sulfidated zero-valent iron/peroxymonosulfate/visible light irradiation (S-mZVI/PMS/vis) for enhanced organic pollutant degradation. The S-mZVI/PMS/vis process exhibited remarkable catalytic activity, achieving a 99.6% rhodamine B (RhB) removal within 10 min. The degradation rate constant of RhB by the S-mZVI/PMS/vis process was found to be 6.49 and 79.84 times higher than that by the S-mZVI/PMS and PMS/vis processes, respectively. Furthermore, the S-mZVI/PMS/vis process worked efficiently across a wide pH range (3.0-9.0), and the result of five-cycle experiments demonstrated the excellent reusability and stability of S-mZVI. Radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis indicated that ·O 2 - , 1 O 2 , and h +  significantly contributed to the degradation of RhB through the S-mZVI/PMS/vis process. The visible light irradiation increased the Fe 2+ concentration, improved the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle, and consequently enhanced the PMS decomposition, reactive species production, and RhB degradation. Conventional electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is not very cost-effective and practical by the excessive input of energy. The electricity generated by photosynthetic microalgae fuel cells (MFCs) is utilized to activate PMS, which would achieve the combination of green bioelectricity and advanced oxidation processes for sustainable pollutants degradation. In this study, a novel dual-chamber of MFCs was constructed by using microalgae as anode electron donor and PMS as cathode electron acceptor, which was operating under both close-circuit and open-circuit conditions. Under close-circuit condition, 1-12 mM PMS in cathode was successfully in situ activated, where 32.00%-99.83% of SMX was removed within 24 h, which was about 1.21-1.78 times of that in the open-circuit of MFCs. Meanwhile, a significant increase in bioelectricity generation in MFCs was observed after the accumulation of microalgae biomass (4.65-5.37 mg/L), which was attributed to the efficient electron separation and transfer. Furthermore, the electrochemical analysis demonstrated that SMX or its products were functioned as electronic shuttles, facilitating the electrochemical reaction and altering the electrical capacitance. The quenching experiments and voltage output results reflected that complex active radical (SO 4 ⋅ - , ⋅OH, and 1 O 2 ) were involved in SMX removal. Seven degradation products of SMX were detected and S-N bond cleavage was the main degradation pathway. Predicted toxicity values calculated by ECOSAR program showed that all the products were less toxic or nontoxic. Finally, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the O and N atoms on SMX were more susceptible to electrophilic reactions, which were more vulnerable to be attacked by reactive species. In the current study, a tumor microenvironment responsive (TME-responsive) copper peroxide-mesoporous silica core-shell structure with H 2 O 2 self-supplying ability was fabricated for targeted ferroptosis/chemotherapy against metastatic breast cancer. At the first stage, copper peroxide nanodot was synthesized and subsequently coated with mesoporous organosilica shell. After (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTMS) functionalization of the organosilica shell, doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded in the mesoporous structure of the nanoparticles and then, heterofunctional COOH-PEG-Maleimide was decorated on the surface through EDC/NHS chemistry. Afterward, thiol-functionalized AS1411 aptamer was conjugated to the maleimide groups of the PEGylated nanoparticles. In vitro study illustrated ROS generation of the system in the treated 4 T1 cell. Cellular uptake and cytotoxicity experiments showed enhanced internalization and cytotoxicity of the targeted system comparing to non-targeted one. The in vivo study on ectopic 4 T1 tumor induced in Female BALB/c mice showed ideal therapeutic effect of Apt-PEG-Silica-DOT@DOX with approximately 90 % tumor suppression in comparison with 50 % and 25 % tumor suppression for PEG-Silica-DOT@DOX and PEG-Silica-DOT. Moreover, Apt-PEG-Silica-DOT@DOX provide favorable characteristics for biosafety issues concerning the rate of survival and loss of body weight. Iron-based catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation hold considerable potential in water treatment. However, the slow conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) restricts its large-scale application. Herein, an iron phosphate tungsten boride composite (FePO 4 /WB) was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method to facilitate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and realize the efficient degradation of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs). Based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization, scavenging experiments, chemical probe approaches, and quantitative tests, both radicals (HO • and SO 4 ⋅- ) and non-radicals ( 1 O 2 and Fe(IV)) were produced in the FePO 4 /WB-PMS system, with relative contributions of 3.02 %, 3.58 %, 6.24 %, and 87.16 % to the degradation of imidacloprid (IMI), respectively. Mechanistic studies revealed that tungsten boride (WB) promoted the reduction of FePO 4 , and the generated Fe(II) dominantly activated PMS through a two-electron transfer to form Fe(IV), while a minority of Fe(II) engaged in a one-electron transfer with PMS to produce SO 4 ⋅- , HO • , and 1 O 2 . In addition, four degradation pathways of NEOs were proposed by analyzing the byproducts using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS. Besides, seed germination experiments revealed the biotoxicity of NEOs was significantly reduced after degradation via the FePO 4 /WB-PMS system. Meanwhile, the recycling experiments and continuous flow reactor experiments showed that FePO 4 /WB exhibited high stability. Advanced oxidation technologies based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) have been extensively applied for the degradation of antibiotics. However, the degradation process inevitably introduces SO 4 2- and other sulfur-containing anions, these pollutants pose a huge threat to the water and soil environment. Addressing these concerns, this study introduced PMS oxidation into a multi-chamber membrane capacitive deionization (MC-MCDI) device to achieve simultaneous tetracycline (TC) degradation and removal of PMS reaction byproduct ions. The experimental results demonstrated that when the TC solution (40 mg L -1 ) was pre-adsorbed for 10 min, the voltage was 1.2 V and the concentration of PMS solution added was 4 mg mL -1 , the removal efficiency of TC and ion can reach 77.4 % and 46.5 % respectively. Furthermore, the activation process of PMS in MC-MCDI/PMS system and the reactive oxygen (ROS) that mainly produce degradation were deeply investigated. Finally, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was employed to identify intermediates of TC degradation, propose potential degradation pathways, and analyze the toxicities of the intermediates. In addition, in five cycles, the MC-MCDI/PMS system demonstrated excellent stability. This study aimed to better understand the association between the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids, namely, linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA), and the increases in the peroxide value that results from storing interesterified fats, which are used as sources of solid fats in edible oil and fat products, at high temperatures. Six interesterified fats with different LA and LNA contents were prepared and oxidized at 50°C, 60°C, 70°C, and 80°C under Rancimat test conditions. The oxidation rate increased with LA and LNA contents and increasing temperature. The oxidation kinetic analysis during the early oxidation stages demonstrated that when LA and LNA exceeded 8% and 2% respectively, the oxidative stability decreased as expected. However, the total LA and LNA contents had a higher correlation with the reaction rate constant [k (meq kg -1 h -1 )] than each amount of LA and LNA contained therein. In other words, the oxidation stability of the interesterified fats used in this study depended on the total LA and LNA contents.

Background: Direct detection of the notorious explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) is very difficult because it lacks facile ionization and UV absorbance or fluorescence. Besides, the current indirect methods are time-consuming and need a pre-step for TATP cleavage to hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, they commonly show significant false-positive results in the presence of some camouflage which limits their field applications. Herein, for the first time, a novel label-free field-applicable spectrofluorimetric nanobiosensor was developed for direct TATP detection using a novel activated-protein protected gold nanocluster (ABSA-AuNCs; QY = 28.3 %) synthesized by a combined protein-assisted-ultrasonication procedure., Results: The ABSA-AuNCs revealed a fluorescence spectrum centered at 330.0 nm which was significantly quenched by TATP (binding constant = 154.06 M -1 ; ΔG = -12.5 kJ mol -1 ; E(%) = 88.5 %). This phenomenon was used as a basis for direct TATP quantification, providing a working range of 0.01-40.0 mg L -1 and a detection limit of 6.7 μg L -1 which is the lowest LOD provided for TATP detection up to now. A %RSD of 0.9 % and 1.56 % was obtained for repeatability and inter-day reproducibility, respectively. The selectivity was checked against a variety of camouflages, revealing ultra-selectivity. Several synthetic samples prepared by several camouflages and real samples (clay soil and real water media) were analyzed, revealing quantitative recoveries of TATP., Significance: During the production of the notorious explosive TATP, it can be discharged into water and soil. This novel method eliminated the false-positive results of traditional methods and is applicable for direct quantitative detection of camouflaged TATP and its residues in real soil and water samples in a highly short response time (2 min). We designed and synthesized two novel photocaged peroxide compounds, N5TBHP and N6TBHP, featuring nitrogen-containing fused ring coumarin skeletons. Notably, a tetrahydroquinoline fused coumarin derivative, N6TBHP demonstrated significantly higher photocleavage efficiency under visible light at 455 nm compared to N5TBHP, which contains an indoline fused coumarin. This process effectively releases the oxidative stress inducer tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP). Additionally, N6TBHP exhibits high resistance to glutathione (GSH), and its UV spectral analysis suggests enhanced intracellular stability due to reduced reactivity with GSH through self-assembly. Furthermore, N6TBHP can release an optimal amount of TBHP into cells under visible light irradiation with minimal cell damage. Peroxy radicals (RO 2 ) are key reactive intermediates in atmospheric oxidation processes and yet their chemistry is not fully unraveled. Little is known about their structures and the structures of the dimeric products (ROOR) in the self-reaction of small RO 2 , which are among the most abundant RO 2 in the atmosphere. The product branching ratios of ROOR and their atmospheric roles are still in controversy. Here, the self-reaction of propyl peroxy radicals (C 3 H 7 O 2 ), a typical small RO 2 radical in the atmosphere, has been studied using synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry. Both radical (C 3 H 7 O) and closed-shell molecular (C 3 H 6 O, C 3 H 7 OH, C 3 H 7 OOC 3 H 7 ) products in the self-reaction are observed in photoionization mass spectra and their elusive isomers are definitely identified in mass-selected photoionization spectra. Three isomers of the C 3 H 7 OOC 3 H 7 dimeric products, R 1 OOR 1 , R 1 OOR 2 , and R 2 OOR 2 (R 1 and R 2 represent 1-C 3 H 7 and 2-C 3 H 7 , respectively), as well as their complex structures have been determined for the first time. Kinetic experiments are performed and compared with chemical simulations to reveal the sources of specific products. The branching ratio of the C 3 H 7 OOC 3 H 7 dimeric channel is measured at 10 ± 5%. In this work, it was found that peroxymonosulfate (PMS) could appreciably accelerate the transformation rates of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and trichloracetonitrile (TCAN) in aqueous solutions, especially under alkaline pHs. The impact of reactive oxygen species scavengers (methyl alcohol for sulfate radical, tert-butyl alcohol for hydroxyl radical, and azide for singlet oxygen) and water matrices (chloride (Cl - ), bicarbonate (HCO 3 - ), and natural organic matter (NOM)) on DCAN and TCAN transformation by PMS is evaluated, revealing negligible effects. A nucleophilic hydrolysis pathway, as opposed to an oxidation process, was proposed for the transformation of DCAN and TCAN by PMS, supported by the hydrolyzable characteristics of these compounds and validated through density functional theory calculations. Kinetic analysis indicated that the transformation of DCAN and TCAN by PMS adhered to a second-order kinetic law, with higher reaction rates observed at elevated pH levels within the range of 7.0-10.0. Kinetic modeling incorporating the hydrolytic contributions of water, hydroxyl ion, and protonated and deprotonated PMS (i.e., HSO 5 - and SO 5 2- ) effectively fitted the experimental data. Species-specific second-order rate constants reveal that SO 5 2- exhibited significantly higher reactivity towards DCAN ((1.69 ± 0.22) × 10 4  M -1 h -1 ) and TCAN ((6.06 ± 0.18) × 10 4  M -1 h -1 ) compared to HSO 5 - ((2.14 ± 0.12) × 10 2  M -1 h -1 ) for DCAN; and (1.378 ± 0.11) × 10 3  M -1 h -1 for TCAN). Comparative analysis of DCAN and TCAN transformation efficiencies by four different oxidants indicated that PMS rivaled chlorine but falls short of hydrogen peroxide, with peroxydisulfate displaying negligible reactivity. Malaria is a life-threatening disease that affects tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Various drugs were used to treat malaria, including artemisinin and derivatives, antibiotics (tetracycline, doxycycline), quinolines (chloroquine, amodiaquine), and folate antagonists (sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine). Since the malarial parasites developed drug resistance, there is a need to develop new chemical entities with high efficacy and low toxicity. In this context, 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes emerged as an essential scaffold and have shown promising antimalarial activity. To improve activity and overcome resistance to various antimalarial drugs; 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes were fused with various aryl/heteroaryl/alicyclic/spiro moieties (steroid-based 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes, triazine-based 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes, aminoquinoline-based 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes, dispiro-based 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes, piperidine-based 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes and diaryl-based 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes). The present review aims to focus on covering the relevant literature published during the past 30 years (1992-2022). We summarize the most significant in vitro, in vivo results and structure-activity relationship studies of 1,2,4,5-tetraoxane-based hybrids as antimalarial agents. ABSTRACT Organic dyes are stable and persistent toxic compounds in the aquatic environment that are refractory to decompose by removal methods such as physico-chemical, optical and biological. Their presence in the aquatic media threatens human and wildlife. Herein, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) due to good chemical durability, low cost and good photocatalytic performance was anchored on biochar (ZnO@biochar) nanocomposites were synthesized towards activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the photocatalytic removal of methyl orange (MO) dye. Several methods were used to characterization of the nanocomposites including FESEM, XRD, PL, EDS, FT-IR spectroscopy, and N 2 adsorption/desorption. The results of the techniques demonstrated that the well-dispersed ZnO NPs were loaded onto the biochar surface. According to the particle size distribution graph, the average particle size of 64 nm was obtained for the ZnO NPs. BET analyzes showed that pore volume, the specific surface area (SSA) and average pore size of the synthesized nanocomposite increased. The survey of effective operational parameters indicated that the highest photocatalytic activity for MO removal was in the pH 3 of solution, 5 ppm initial dye concentration, 30 mg ZnO/biochar nanocomposite, and 20 mg PMS dose under LED-50W lamp irradiation (97.03% in the reaction time of 80 min). During the process, the reduction of the total organic carbon (TOC) contents and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were observed. Moreover, the MO degradation kinetics under optimal operating conditions were determined. It is concluded that the ZnO@biochar nanocomposite/PMS process was an efficient degradation method for the decomposition of the dye pollutant.

In this study, cost-effective alkali-activated materials made from industrial side streams (blast furnace slag and Na-jarosite) were developed for catalytic applications. The catalytic activity of the prepared materials was examined in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation reactions of a bisphenol A in an aqueous solution. All materials prepared revealed porous structure and characterisation expressed the incorporation of iron to the material via ion exchange in the preparation step. Furthermore, the materials prepared exhibited high specific surface areas (over 200 m 2 /g) and were mainly mesoporous. Moderate bisphenol A removal percentages (35%-37%) were achieved with the prepared materials during 3 h of oxidation at pH 7-8 and 50°C. Moreover, the activity of catalysts remained after four consecutive cycles (between the cycles the catalysts were regenerated) and the specific surface areas decreased only slightly and no changes in the phase structures were observed. Thus, the prepared blast furnace slag and Na-jarosite-based catalysts exhibited high mechanical stability and showed good potential in the removal of bisphenol A from wastewater through catalytic wet peroxide oxidation.

Wound healing represents a complex biological process crucial for tissue repair and regeneration. In recent years, biomaterial-based scaffolds loaded with bioactive compounds have emerged as promising therapeutic strategies to accelerate wound healing. In this study, we investigated the properties and wound healing effects of cryogels loaded with calcium peroxide (CP) and berberine (BB). The cryogels were synthesized through a cryogenic freezing technique and displayed pore diameters of 83 ± 39 μm, with porosity exceeding 90%. Following 20 days of degradation, the percentage of remaining weight for GPC and GPC-CP-BB cryogels was determined to be 12.42 ± 2.45% and 10.78 ± 2.08%, respectively. Moreover, the swelling ratios after 3 minutes for GPC and GPC-CP-BB were found to be 22.10 ± 0.05 and 21.00 ± 0.07, respectively. In vitro investigations demonstrated the cytocompatibility of the cryogels, with sufficient adhesion and proliferation of fibroblast (NIH-3T3) cells observed on the scaffolds, along with their hemocompatibility. Furthermore, the cryogels exhibited sustained release kinetics of both calcium peroxide and berberine, ensuring prolonged therapeutic effects at the wound site. In vivo assessment using a rat model of full-thickness skin wounds demonstrated accelerated wound closure rates in animals treated with the GPC-CP-BB scaffold compared to controls. Histological analysis revealed enhanced granulation tissue formation, re-epithelialization, and collagen deposition in the GPC-CP-BB group. Overall, our findings suggest that the scaffold loaded with CP and BB holds great promise as a therapeutic approach for promoting wound healing. Its multifaceted properties offer a multifunctional platform for localized delivery of therapeutic agents while providing mechanical support and maintaining a favorable microenvironment for tissue regeneration.

Bromide (Br - ) was found in the fresh waters at concentrations from 0.1 to 1 mg/L and can be used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as a widely used chemical oxidation agent. In the present study, the reaction between PMS and Br - ions (PMS/Br - process) for the effective degradation of reactive yellow 145 (RY-145) dye was investigated by changing operational parameters vis solution pH, dosage of Br - ions and PMS, RY-145 concentration, and reaction time. Based on the results, the simultaneous presence of PMS and Br - ions in the solution led to efficient degradation of RY-145 with a synergistic index of 11.89. The degradation efficiency of RY-145 was decreased in severe basic pH and the presence of CO 3 2- ions as a coexisting anion. Likewise, 4 mg/L of humic acid (HA), used as a classic scavenger, led to a 26.53% decrease in the RY-145 degradation efficiency. The free bromine (HOBr/OBr - ), superoxide radical ( ● O 2 - ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the dominant oxidation agents in RY-145 degradation, which confirmed the nonradical degradation pathway. In addition, PMS/Br - process showed excellent ability in mineralizing RY-145 in different aqueous solutions (total organic carbon (TOC) decreased 86.39% in deionized water and 78.23% in tap water). The coexistence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in the environment poses a potential threat to public health. In our study, we have developed a novel advanced oxidation process for simultaneously removing ARGs and ARB by two types of iron and nitrogen-doped biochar derived from rice straw (FeN-RBC) and sludge (FeN-SBC). All viable ARB (approximately 10 8 CFU mL -1 ) was inactivated in the FeN-RBC/ peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system within 40 min and did not regrow after 48 h even in real water samples. Flow cytometry identified 96.7 % of dead cells in the FeN-RBC/PMS system, which verified the complete inactivation of ARB. Thorough disinfection of ARB was associated with the disruption of cell membranes and intracellular enzymes related to the antioxidant system. Whereas live bacteria (approximately 200 CFU mL -1 ) remained after FeN-SBC/PMS treatment. Intracellular and extracellular ARGs (tetA and tetB) were efficiently degraded in the FeN-RBC/PMS system. The production of active species, primarily •OH, SO 4 •- and Fe (IV), as well as electron transfer, were essential to the effective disinfection of FeN-RBC/PMS. In comparison with FeN-SBC, the better catalytic performance of FeN-RBC was mainly ascribed to its higher amount of pyridine-N and Fe 0 , and more reactive active sites (such as CO group and Fe-N sites). Density functional theory calculations indicated the greater adsorption energy and Bader charge, more stable Fe-O bond, more easily broken OO bond in FeN-RBC/PMS, which demonstrated the stronger electron transfer capacity between FeN-RBC and PMS. Nanotheranostic platforms, which can respond to tumor microenvironments (TME, such as low pH and hypoxia), are immensely appealing for photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, hypoxia in solid tumors harms the treatment outcome of PDT which depends on oxygen molecules to generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Herein, we report the design of TME-responsive smart nanotheranostic platform (DOX/ZnO 2 @Zr-Ce6/Pt/PEG) which can generate endogenously hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) to alleviate hypoxia for improving photodynamic-chemo combination therapy of tumors. DOX/ZnO 2 @Zr-Ce6/Pt/PEG nanocomposite was prepared by the synthesis of ZnO 2 nanoparticles, in-situ assembly of Zr-Ce6 as typical metal-organic framework (MOF) on ZnO 2 surface, in-situ reduction of Pt nanozymes, amphiphilic lipids surface coating and then doxorubicin (DOX) loading. DOX/ZnO 2 @Zr-Ce6/Pt/PEG nanocomposite exhibits average sizes of ∼78 nm and possesses a good loading capacity (48.8 %) for DOX. When DOX/ZnO 2 @Zr-Ce6/Pt/PEG dispersions are intratumorally injected into mice, the weak acidic TEM induces the decomposition of ZnO 2 core to generate endogenously H 2 O 2 , then Pt nanozymes catalyze H 2 O 2 to produce O 2 for alleviating tumor hypoxia. Upon laser (630 nm) irradiation, the Zr-Ce6 component in DOX/ZnO 2 @Zr-Ce6/Pt/PEG can produce cytotoxic 1 O 2 , and 1 O 2 generation rate can be enhanced by 2.94 times due to the cascaded generation of endogenous H 2 O 2 /O 2 . Furthermore, the generated O 2 can suppress the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor α, and further enable tumor cells to become more sensitive to chemotherapy, thereby leading to an increased effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment. The photodynamic-chemo combination therapy from DOX/ZnO 2 @Zr-Ce6/Pt/PEG nanoplatform exhibits remarkable tumor growth inhibition compared to chemotherapy or PDT. Fe and N co-doped walnut shell biochar (Fe,N-BC) was prepared through a one-pot pyrolysis procedure by using walnut shells as feedstocks, melamine as the N source, and iron (III) chloride as the Fe source. Moreover, pristine biochar (BC), nitrogen-doped biochar (N-BC), and α-Fe 2 O 3 -BC were synthesized as controls. All the prepared materials were characterized by different techniques and were used for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). A very high degradation rate for SMX (10 mg/L) was achieved with Fe,N-BC/PMS (0.5 min -1 ), which was higher than those for BC/PMS (0.026 min -1 ), N-BC/PMS (0.038 min -1 ), and α-Fe 2 O 3 -BC/PMS (0.33 min -1 ) under the same conditions. This is mainly due to the formation of Fe 3 C and iron oxides, which are very reactive for the activation of PMS. In the next step, Fe,N-BC was employed for the formation of a composite membrane structure by a liquid-induced phase inversion process. The synthesized ultrafiltration membrane not only exhibited high separation performance for humic acid sodium salt (HA, 98%) but also exhibited improved self-cleaning properties when applied for rhodamine B (RhB) filtration combined with a PMS solution cleaning procedure. Scavenging experiments revealed that 1 O 2 was the predominant species responsible for the degradation of SMX. The transformation products of SMX and possible degradation pathways were also identified. In this study, the activation of peroxydisulfate (PS) by K 2 FeO 4 -activation biochar (KFeB) and acid-picking K 2 FeO 4 -activation biochar (AKFeB) was investigated to reveal the mechanism differences between iron site and graphitic structure in sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation and ARB inactivation, respectively. KFeB/PS and AKFeB/PS systems had similar degradation property towards SDZ, but only KFeB/PS system showed excellent bactericidal property. The mechanism study demonstrated that dissolved SDZ was degraded through electron transfer pathway mediated by graphitic structure, while suspended ARB was inactivated through free radicals generated by iron-activated PS, accompanied by excellent removal on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The significant decrease in conjugative transfer frequency indicated the reduced horizontal gene transfer risk of ARGs after treatment with KFeB/PS system. Transcriptome data suggested that membrane protein channel disruption and adenosine triphosphate synthesis inhibition were key reasons for conjugative transfer frequency reduction. Continuous flow reactor of KFeB/PS system can efficiently remove antibiotics and ARB, implying the potential application in practical wastewater purification. Cytochrome P450 (P450, CYP) 19A1 is the steroid aromatase, the enzyme responsible for the 3-step conversion of androgens (androstenedione or testosterone) to estrogens. The final step is C-C bond scission (removing the 19-oxo group as formic acid) that proceeds via a historically controversial reaction mechanism. The two competing mechanistic possibilities involve a ferric peroxide anion (Fe 3+ O 2 - , Compound 0) and a perferryl oxy species (FeO 3+ , Compound I). One approach to discern the role of each species in the reaction is with the use of oxygen-18 labeling, i.e., from 18 O 2 and H 2 18 O of the reaction product formic acid. We applied this approach, using several technical improvements, to study the deformylation of 19-oxo-androstenedione by human P450 19A1 and of a model secosteroid, 3-oxodecaline-4-ene-10-carboxaldehyde (ODEC), by rabbit P450 2B4. Both aldehyde substrates were sensitive to non-enzymatic acid-catalyzed deformylation, yielding 19-norsteroids, and conditions were established to avoid issues with artifactual generation of formic acid. The Compound 0 reaction pathway predominated (i.e., Fe 3+ O 2 - ) in both P450 19A1 oxidation of 19-oxo-androstenedione and P450 2B4 oxidation of ODEC. Although nanocatalytic medicine has demonstrated its advantages in tumor therapy, the outcomes heavily relie on substrate concentration and the metabolic pathways are still indistinct. We discover that violet phosphorus quantum dots (VPQDs) can catalyze the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) without requiring external stimuli and the catalytic substrates are confirmed to be oxygen (O 2 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) through the computational simulation and experiments. Considering the short of O 2 and H 2 O 2 at the tumor site, we utilize calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) to supply catalytic substrates for VPQDs and construct nanoparticles together with them, named VPCaNPs. VPCaNPs can induce oxidative stress in tumor cells, particularly characterized by a significant increase in hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals, which cause substantial damage to the structure and function of cells, ultimately leading to cell apoptosis. Intriguingly, O 2 provided by CaO 2 can degrade VPQDs slowly, and the degradation product, phosphate, as well as CaO 2 -generated calcium ions, can promote tumor calcification. Antitumor immune activation and less metastasis are also observed in VPCaNPs administrated animals. In conclusion, our study unveils the anti-tumor activity of VPQDs as catalysts for generating cytotoxic ROS and the degradation products can promote tumor calcification, providing a promising strategy for treating tumors., (© 2024. Significant efforts have recently been exerted toward construction of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 )-dominated catalytic oxidation systems for selective removal of organic contaminants from wastewater, with peroxides serving as the chemical source. However, the relevance of 1 O 2 in the removal of pollutants remains ambiguous and requires elucidation. In this study, we scrupulously exclude the significant role of 1 O 2 in contaminant degradation in various peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation systems. Multiple experimental results indicate that the activation of PMS catalyzed by CuO, MnO 2 , Fe-doped g-C 3 N 4 (Fe-CN), or N-doped graphite does not predominantly follow the 1 O 2 pathway. More importantly, the reactivity of 1 O 2 is remarkably overestimated in the literature, given its inferior capacity in degradation of a range of heterocyclic contaminants and aromatic compounds possessing electron-withdrawing groups. In addition, the strong physical quenching effect of water, coupled with the low oxidizing ability of 1 O 2 , would notably reduce the utilization efficiency of peroxide, which is particularly apparent in the degradation of micropollutants. We reckon that this study is expected to end the long-running dispute associated with the relevance of 1 O 2 in pollutant removal.

Synthesizing cubic spinel Cu 2 MnO 4 with nanosheet structure (SCMO) aimed to construct a "non-radical-mediated radical-oxidative reaction", for increasing PMS utilization efficiency, and solving the defects of SO 4 •- and •OH through indirect PMS activation by electron transfer process. Compared with box-like Cu 2 MnO 4 (11.1%, 0.0035 min -1 ) and ordinary Cu 2 MnO 4 nanoparticles (21.3%, 0.0070 min -1 ), SCMO/PMS showed excellent trichloroethylene removal (98.8%, 0.1577 min -1 ). The pivotal role of Cu(III) was determined based on EPR analysis, quenching experiments, chemical probe experiments, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction and Raman spectroscopy analysis, in-situ FTIR and Raman analyses. In brief, the interaction between PMS and SCMO could produce surface-bonded reactive complexes and the subsequent breaking of O-O bond in the sub-stable structure allowed the conversion of Cu(II) to Cu(III), which in turn facilitates the generation of •OH and SO 4 •- . The density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided supporting evidence for the electron donor role of SCMO and the increase of the electron acceptance capacity of PMS. SCMO/PMS system showed good resistance and degradation efficiency to complex composition and combined pollutants in actually contaminated groundwater, respectively. Objectives: This study assessed the effects of 15% and 20% carbamide peroxide (CP) on color, surface roughness, and hardness of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) dental ceramics., Materials and Methods: This in vitro study was conducted on 120 Vita Mark II, Celtra Duo, and Suprinity CAD/CAM ceramic specimens. The ceramic specimens in each group (n = 40) were randomly assigned to two subgroups (n = 20) for polishing and glazing, and their baseline color, surface roughness (Ra), and hardness were assessed. In each subgroup, half of the specimens were exposed to 15% CP, while the other half were exposed to 20% CP. Their color change (ΔE), surface roughness, and hardness were then measured again. Surface roughness, hardness, and color were analyzed sequentially by profilometer, Vickers hardness tester, and spectrophotometer, respectively. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and post hoc Bonferroni test (α = 0.05)., Results: The surface roughness of all groups significantly increased after bleaching treatment (p < 0.05). Surface hardness of all groups decreased after bleaching treatment, but this reduction was only significant in Vita Mark II subgroups (glazed, polished, 15%, and 20% CP). The ΔE was not clinically and visually perceivable in any group., Conclusion: The present results revealed that concentration of CP and type of surface treatment affected the surface properties of CAD/CAM ceramics. Type of surface treatment only affected the surface hardness of Vita Mark II ceramics (p < 0.05). Concentration of CP had a significant effect only on polished Vita Mark II., (© 2024 The Author(s). In the sludge dewatering process, a formidable challenge arises due to the robust interactions between extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and bound water. This study introduces a novel, synergistic conditioning method that combines iron (Fe 2+ )/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and polyacrylamide (PAM) to significantly enhance sludge dewatering efficiency. The application of the Fe 2+ /PMS-PAM conditioning method led to a substantial reduction in specific filtration resistance (SFR) by 82.75% and capillary suction time (CST) by 80.44%, marking a considerable improvement in dewatering performance. Comprehensive analyses revealed that pre-oxidation with Fe 2+ /PMS in the Fe 2+ /PMS-PAM process effectively degraded EPS, facilitating the release of bound water. Subsequently, PAM enhanced the flocculation of fine sludge particles resulting from the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Furthermore, analysis based on the Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory demonstrated shifts in interaction energies, highlighting the breakdown of energy barriers within the sludge and a transition in surface characteristics from hydrophilic (3.79 mJ m -2 ) to hydrophobic (-61.86 mJ m -2 ). This shift promoted the spontaneous aggregation of sludge particles. The innovative use of the Flory-Huggins theory provided insights into the sludge filtration mechanism from a chemical potential perspective, linking these changes to SFR. The introduction of Fe 2+ /PMS-PAM conditioning disrupted the uniformity of the EPS-formed gel layer, significantly reducing the chemical potential difference between the permeate and the water in the gel layer, leading to a lower SFR and enhanced dewatering performance. This thermodynamic approach significantly enhances our understanding of sludge dewatering and conditioning. A MOF-on-MOF composite derivative material named ZIF-67@Ce-MOF-600 was designed and synthesized. The preparation of ZIF-67@Ce-MOF-600 was optimized from the aspects of the ratio of metal and ligand, heat-treatment temperature. It was demonstrated by XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS and TEM. The optimum conditions for the activation of PMS by ZIF-67@Ce-MOF-600 for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) were investigated by adjusting the catalyst dosage, TC, pH, peoxymonosulfate (PMS) concentration, and different kinds of water, co-existing anions and pollution. Under optimal conditions (20 mg catalysts and 50 mg PMS added) in 100 mL of tetracyclines (TC) solvent (20 mg TC/L), the removal rate could reach up to 99.2% and after five cycles was 70.5%. The EPR results indicated the presence of free radicals and non-free radical, among which free radicals intended to play a major role in the degradation process. Bacterial infection and tissue hypoxia always prevent wound healing, so multifunctional platforms with antimicrobial and oxygen-supplying functions were developed. However, they face many difficulties such as complex preparation and low oxygen release. To address this challenge, a copper peroxide loaded gelatin/oxide dextran hydrogel (CGO) was prepared. Surprisingly, CGO hydrogel as a wound dressing not only had good biocompatibility, injectivity, and mechanical properties, but also exhibited mild photothermal properties, temperature responsiveness, and pH responsiveness. After being applied to wounds infected with bacteria, CGO hydrogel released copper peroxide under near-infrared laser irradiation, which produced copper ions and hydrogen peroxide, combined with PTT to kill bacteria. After the bacteria were cleared from the wound and the pH of the wound was changed to be acidic, CGO hydrogel released copper peroxide via pH response. Copper ions and oxygen produced from copper peroxide accelerated wound healing by promoting angiogenesis. In this study, the Fe(III)/WS 2 /peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was found to remove up to 97% of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CHA) within 10 min. CHA is a model compound for naphthenic acids (NAs), which are prevalent in petroleum industrial wastewater. The addition of WS 2 effectively activated the Fe(III)/PMS system, significantly enhancing its ability to produce reactive oxidative species (ROS) for the oxidation of CHA. Further experimental results and characterization analyses demonstrated that the metallic element W(IV) in WS 2 could provide electrons for the direct reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), thus rapidly activating PMS and initiating a chain redox process to produce ROS (SO 4 •- , • OH, and 1 O 2 ). Repeated tests and practical exploratory experiments indicated that WS 2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance, reusability and anti-interference capacity, achieving efficient degradation of commercial NAs mixtures. CuCoFe-LDO/BCD was successfully synthesized from CuCoFe-LDH and biochar derived from durian shell (BCD). Ciprofloxacin (CFX) degraded more than 95% mainly by O 2 •- and 1 O 2 in CuCoFe-LDO/BCD(2/1)/PMS system within 10 min with a rate constant of 0.255 min -1 , which was 14.35 and 2.66 times higher than those in BCD/PMS and CuCoFe-LDO/PMS systems, respectively. The catalytic system exhibited good performance over a wide pH range (3-9) and high degradation efficiency of other antibiotics. Built-in electric field (BIEF) driven by large difference in the work function/Fermi level ratio between CuCoFe-LDO and BCD accelerated continuous electron transfer from CuCoFe-LDO to BCD to result in two different microenvironments with opposite charges at the interface, which enhanced PMS adsorption and activation via different directions. As a non-radical, 1 O 2 was mainly generated via PMS activation by C=O in BCD. The presence of C=O in BCD resulted in an increase in atomic charge of C in C=O and redistributed the charge density of other C atoms. As a result, strong adsorption of PMS at C atom in C=O and other C with a high positive charge was favorable for 1 O 2 generation, whereas an enhanced adsorption of PMS at negatively charged C accounted for the generation of • OH and SO 4 •- . After adsorption, electrons in C of BCD became deficient and were fulfilled with those transferred from CuCoFe-LDO driven by BIEF, which ensured the high catalytic activity of CuCoFe-LDO/BCD. O 2 •- , on the other hand, was generated via several pathways that involved in the transformation of • OH and SO 4 •- originated from PMS activation by the transition of metal species in CuCoFe-LDO and negatively charged C in BCD. The activation of persulfates to degrade refractory organic pollutants is a hot issue in advanced oxidation right now. Here, it is reported that single-atom Fe-incorporated carbon nitride (Fe-CN-650) can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Through some characterization techniques and DFT calculation, it is proved that Fe single atoms in Fe-CN-650 exist mainly in the form of Fe-N 3 O 1 coordination, and Fe-N 3 O 1 exhibited better affinity for PMS than the traditional Fe-N 4 structure. The degradation rate constant of SMX in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system reached 0.472 min -1 , and 90.80% of SMX can still be effectively degraded within 10 min after five consecutive recovery cycles. The radical quenching experiment and electrochemical analysis confirm that the pollutants are mainly degraded by two non-radical pathways through 1 O 2 and Fe(IV)═O induced at the Fe-N 3 O 1 sites. In addition, the intermediate products of SMX degradation in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system show toxicity attenuation or non-toxicity. In this study, a 3D CoNiO 2 /Co core-shell structure biochar catalyst derived from walnut shell was synthesized by hydrothermal and ion etching methods. The prepared BC@CoNi-600 catalyst exhibited exceptional peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The system achieved 100 % degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The reactive oxygen species in the BC@CoNi-600/PMS system included SO 4 - , OH, and O 2 - . Density functional theory calculations explored the synergistic effects between nickel-cobalt bimetallic and carbon matrix during PMS activation. The unique 3D core-shell structure of BC@CoNi-600 features an outer nickel-cobalt bimetallic layer with exceptional PMS adsorption capacity, while protecting the zero-valence Co of the inner layer from oxidation. Based on the experimental-data, machine learning modeling mechanism, and information theory, a nonlinear modeling method was proposed. This study utilizes a machine learning approach to investigate the degradation of SMX in complex aquatic environments. Developing a high-performance activator is crucial for the practical application of peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs). High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted increasing attention due to their stable crystal structure, flexible composition and unique functionality. However, research into the mechanisms by which HEOs function as PMS activators for degrading organic pollutants remains insufficient, and the relationship between entropy and the catalytic performance of HEOs has yet to be clarified. In this study, we synthesized NiMgZnCuCoO x with different levels of entropy as PMS activators for acetaminophen (APAP) degradation, and observed a significant effect for entropy on the catalytic performance. Sulfate radicals (SO 4 • ‒ ) were identified as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS), while hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) act as secondary ROS during APAP degradation. Both the Co 2+ contents and the oxygen vacancy concentration in NiMgZnCuCoO x are found to increase with the entropy. An increase in the Co 2+ sites leads to more activation sites for PMS activation, while excessive oxygen vacancies consume PMS, producing weak oxidation species, and affect the electron-donating ability of Co 2+ . Consequently, the NiMgZnCuCoO x with middle level of entropy exhibits the optimal performance with APAP degradation rate and mineralization rate reaching 100% and 74.22%, respectively. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates and their toxicities were assessed through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis. The contamination of water bodies by synthetic organic compounds coupled with climate change and the growing demand for water supply calls for new approaches to water management and treatment. To tackle the decontamination issue, the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using copper magnetic ferrite (CuMF) nanoparticles prepared under distinct synthesis conditions was assessed to oxidize imidacloprid (IMD) insecticide. After optimization of some operational variables, such as CuMF load (62.5-250 mg L -1 ), PMS concentration (250-1000 μM), and solution pH (3-10), IMD was completely oxidized in 2 h without interferences from leached metal ions. Such performance was also achieved when using tap water but was inhibited by a simulated municipal wastewater due to scavenging effects promoted by inorganic and organic species. Although there was evidence of the presence of sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen oxidizing species, only four intermediate compounds were detected by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis, mainly due to hydroxyl addition reactions. Concerning the changes in surface properties of CuMF after use, no morphological or structural changes were observed except a small increase in the charge transfer resistance. The widespread use of antibiotics often increases bacterial resistance. Herein, we reported a silver peroxide-incorporated carbon dots (defined as Ag 2 O 2 -CDs) with high photothermal conversion efficiency via in situ oxidation process. The prepared Ag 2 O 2 -CDs exhibited ultra-small size of 2.0 nm and hybrid phase structure. Meanwhile, the Ag 2 O 2 -CDs were of a similar optical performance comparing with traditional carbon dots (CDs). Importantly, the incorporation of Ag 2 O 2 into CDs significantly enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency from 3.8% to 28.5%. By combining silver ion toxicity and photothermal ablation, the Ag 2 O 2 -CDs were capable of destroying gram-positive and gram-negative bacterium effectively. Peroxide-mediated oxidation of drug molecules is a known challenge faced throughout the pharmaceutical development pathway-from early-stage stability studies to manufacturing processes. During the initial development stage, the major source of peroxide is the formulation excipients, whether they are pre-loaded or generated in situ due to slow degradation, and in the late phase, peroxides can be introduced during sanitization processes or generated via cavitation. In essence, a control strategy for peroxide mitigation often becomes a critical quality attribute for successful drug development. To this end, quantitation of peroxide is essential to monitor the peroxide level to ensure product quality and proposed shelf-life. However, methods for reliable and robust quantitation to detect trace levels of peroxide in a complex drug product matrix become increasingly challenging. This article discusses three high-throughput assays based on absorbance, fluorescence and chemiluminescence measurements to detect peroxide at a low level and compares the methods through validation studies in water. Selected methods have also been tested to understand the forced degradation of model peptide drug products with spiked hydrogen peroxide. Peptide degradation profiles and residual peroxide levels are presented to provide an understanding of the suitability of the quantitation methods and their performance.

The efficient activation and selective high-valent metal-oxo (HVMO) species generation remain challenging for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) in water purification. The underlying mechanism of the activation pathway is ambiguous, leading to a massive dilemma in the control and regulation of HVMO species generation. Herein, bioinspired by the bio-oxidase structure of cytochrome P450, the axial coordination strategy was adopted to tailor a single-atom cobalt catalyst (CoN4S-CB) with an axial S coordination. CoN4S-CB high-selectively generated high-valent Co-Oxo species (Co(IV)=O) via PMS activation. Co(IV)=O demonstrated an ingenious oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reaction to achieve the efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and this allowed robust operation in various complex environments. The axial S coordination modulated the 3d orbital electron distribution of the Co atom. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the axial S coordination decreased the energy barrier for PMS desorption and lowered the free energy change (ΔG) for Co(IV)=O generation. CoN4S-PMS* had a narrow d-band close to the Fermi level, which enhanced charge transfer to accelerate the cleavage of O-O and O-H bonds in PMS. Fe(II) is of great importance in iron-based advanced oxidation processes. However, traditional methods to maintain Fe(II) concentration, such as the addition of chelating agents or reducing agents, may lead to an increase in chemical oxygen demand of secondary pollution. Therefore, in this study, iron sulfides, namely ferrous sulfide (FeS), pyrite (FeS 2 ), and sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI), were applied for not only the regeneration of Fe(II) but also the direct dissolution of Fe(II). Nanoscale calcium peroxide (nCaO 2 ) was synthesized and used as the oxidant. The removal of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) were significantly promoted from 8.8 to 98.2, 79.2, and 80.8% with the aid of FeS, FeS 2 , and S-nZVI within 180 min, respectively. The dominant reactive oxygen species were demonstrated and their steady-state concentrations were quantified. Besides, the dechlorination of 1,2-DCA reached 90.4, 69.5, and 83.9% in nCaO 2 /Fe(III) systems coupled with FeS, FeS 2 , and S-nZVI, respectively. Due to the frequent detection and potential toxicity of moxifloxacin (MOX), its removal technology had attracted attention in recent years. In this research, CuFeS 2 /MXene was prepared and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove MOX. The degradation efficiencies, kinetics, influences, and reaction mechanism of MOX by CuFeS 2 /MXene/PMS were investigated. The synergistic effect of CuFeS 2 and MXene significantly enhanced PMS activation, producing SO 4 •- , HO•, and 1 O 2 as the main active species. By adding 0.12 g/L CuFeS 2 /MXene and 0.12 mM PMS, MOX removal efficiency reached 99.1% within 40 min, with a rate constant of 0.1073 min -1 . The composite ratios of CuFeS 2 /MXene impacted PMS activation more significantly than catalyst dosages and PMS concentrations. Acidic conditions were favorable for the degradation of MOX, while HCO 3 - , HPO 4 2- , Mn 2+ , and HA had the inhibitory effects. Twelve major products were detected by HPLC-MS, and DFT was used to illustrate possible degradation pathways of MOX, including the removal of nitrogen-containing heterocycle and transformations of quinolone moieties. Toxicity analysis showed that the developmental toxicity, mutagenicity, and acute toxicity of degradation products tended to decrease. Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are renowned for their exceptional capacity to degrade refractory organic pollutants due to their wide applicability, cost-effectiveness, and swift mineralization and oxidation rates. The primary sources of radicals in AOPs are persulfate (PS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) ions, sparking significant interest in their mechanistic and catalytic aspects. To develop a novel nanocatalyst for SR-AOPs, particularly for PMS activation, we synthesized carbon-coated FeCo nanoparticles (NPs) using solvothermal methods based on the polyol approach. Various synthesis conditions were investigated, and the NPs were thoroughly characterized regarding their structure, morphology, magnetic properties, and catalytic efficiency. The FeCo phase was primarily obtained at [OH - ] / [Metal] = 26 and [Fe] / [Co] = 2 ratios. Moreover, as the [Fe]/[Co] ratio increased, the degree of xylose carbonization to form a carbon coating (hydrochar) on the NPs also increased. The NPs exhibited a spherical morphology with agglomerates of varying sizes. Vibrating-sample magnetometer analysis (VSM) indicated that a higher proportion of iron resulted in NPs with higher saturation magnetization (up to 167.8 emu g -1 ), attributed to a larger proportion of FeCo bcc phase in the nanocomposite. The best catalytic conditions for degrading 100 ppm Rhodamine B (RhB) included 0.05 g L -1 of NPs, 2 mM PMS, pH 7.0, and a 20-min reaction at 25 °C. Notably, singlet oxygen was the predominant specie formed in the experiments in the SR-AOP, followed by sulfate and hydroxyl radicals. The catalyst could be reused for up to five cycles, retaining over 98% RhB degradation, albeit with increased metal leaching. Even in the first use, dissolved Fe and Co concentrations were 0.8 ± 0.3 and 4.0 ± 0.5 mg L -1 , respectively. Spatiotemporal assessment of lipid and protein oxidation is key for understanding quality deterioration in emulsified food products containing polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this work, we first mechanistically validated the use of the lipid oxidation-sensitive fluorophore BODIPY 665/676 as a semi-quantitative marker for local peroxyl radical formation. Next, we assessed the impact of microfluidic and colloid mill emulsification (respectively producing mono- and polydisperse droplets) on local protein and lipid oxidation kinetics in whey protein isolate (WPI)-stabilized emulsions. We further used BODIPY 581/591 C11 and CAMPO-AFDye 647 as colocalisation markers for lipid and protein oxidation. The polydisperse emulsions showed an inverse relation between droplet size and lipid oxidation rate. Further, we observed less protein and lipid oxidation occurring in similar sized droplets in monodisperse emulsions. This observation was linked to more heterogeneous protein packing at the droplet surface during colloid mill emulsification, resulting in larger inter-droplet heterogeneity in both protein and lipid oxidation. The photo-Fenton process is effective for pathogen removal, and its low-cost versions can be applied in resource-poor contexts. Herein, a photo-Fenton-like system was proposed using low concentrations of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite) and persulfates (peroxymonosulfate - PMS, and peroxydisulfate - PDS), which exhibited excellent inactivation performance towards MS2 bacteriophages. In the presence of bacteria, MS2 inactivation was inhibited in H 2 O 2 and PDS systems but promoted in PMS-involved systems. The inactivation efficacy of all the proposed systems for mixed bacteria and viruses was greater than that of the sole bacteria, showing potential practical applications. The inactivation performance of humic acid-incorporated iron oxides mediating photo-Fenton-like processes was also studied; except for the PMS-involved system, the inactivation efficacy of the H 2 O 2 - and PDS-involved systems was inhibited, but the PDS-involved system was still acceptable (< 2 h). Reactive species exploration experiments indicated that ·OH was the main radical in the H 2 O 2 and PDS systems, whereas 1 O 2 played a key role in the PMS-involved system. The escalation of global water pollution due to emerging pollutants has gained significant attention. To address this issue, catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technology has emerged as a promising treatment approach for effectively decontaminating a wide range of pollutants. Recently, modified biochar has become an increasingly attractive as PMS activator. Metal-heteroatom-co-doped biochar (MH-BC) has emerged as a promising catalyst that can provide enhanced performance over heteroatom-doped and metal-doped biochar due to the synergism between metal and heteroatom in promoting PMS activation. Therefore, this review aims to discuss the fabrication pathways (i.e., internal vs external doping and pre-vs post-modification) and key parameters (i.e., source of precursors, synthesis methods, and synthesis conditions) affecting the performance of MH-BC as PMS activator. Subsequently, an overview of all the possible PMS activation pathways by MH-BC is provided. Subsequently, Also, the detection, identification, and quantification of several reactive species (such as, • OH, SO 4 •- , O 2 •- , 1 O 2 , and high valent oxo species) generated in the catalytic PMS system by MH-BC are also evaluated. Sustainable and rapid production of high-valent cobalt-oxo (Co(IV)=O) species for efficiently removing organic pollutants is challenging in permoxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced-oxidation-processes (AOPs) due to the limitation of the high 3d-orbital electronic occupancy of Co and slow conversion from Co(III) to Co(II). Herein, S-scheme BiOCl-OV/CoAl-LDH heterojunction were constructed by ultrathin BiOCl with the oxygen-vacancy (OV) self-assembled with ultrathin CoAl-LDH. OV promoted the formation of charge transfer channel (Bi-O-Co bonds) at the interface of the heterojunction and reduced electron occupation of the Co 3d-orbital to facilitate the generation of Co(IV)=O in the BiOCl-OV/CoAl-LDH/PMS/Visible-light system. S-scheme heterojunction accelerated the photogenerated electrons to allow rapid conversion of Co(III) to Co(II), promoting the fast two-electron transfer from Co(II) to Co(IV)=O. Consequently, the developed BiOCl-OV/CoAl-LDH/PMS/Visible-light system showed excellent degradation efficiency for most of organic pollutions, and exhibited very high removal capability for the actual industrial wastewater. Background: The discovery of artemisinin, an endoperoxide, encouraged the scientific community to explore endoperoxides as potential anti-parasitic molecules. Although artemisinin derivatives are rapidly evolving as potent anti-malarials, their potential as anti-leishmanials is emerging gradually. The treatment of leishmaniasis, a group of neglected tropical diseases is handicapped by lack of effective vaccines, drug toxicities and drug resistance. The weak antioxidant defense mechanism of the Leishmania parasites due to lack of catalase and a selenium dependent glutathione peroxidase system makes them vulnerable to oxidative stress, and this has been successful exploited by endoperoxides., Purpose: The study aimed to review the available literature on the anti-leishmanial efficacy of natural endoperoxides with a view to achieve insights into their mode of actions., Methods: We reviewed more around 110 research and review articles restricted to the English language, sourced from electronic bibliographic databases including PubMed, Google, Web of Science, Google scholar etc. RESULTS: Natural endoperoxides could potentially augment the anti-leishmanial drug library, with artemisinin and ascaridole emerging as potential anti-leishmanial agents. Due to higher reactivity of the cyclic peroxide moiety, and exploiting the compromised antioxidant defense of Leishmania, endoperoxides like artemisinin and ascaridole potentiate their leishmanicidal efficacy by creating a redox imbalance. Furthermore, these molecules minimally impair oxidative phosphorylation; instead inhibit glycolytic functions, culminating in depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane and depletion of ATP. Additionally, the carbon-centered free radicals generated from endoperoxides, participate in chain reactions that can generate even more reactive organic radicals that are toxic to macromolecules, including lipids, proteins and DNA, leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of Leishmania parasites. Rhubarb is widely used in health care, but causing a great amount of rhein-containing herbal residue. Rhein with several toxicities might pollute environment, damage ecology and even hazard human health if left untreated. In this study, the degradation effects of bisulfite- (BS) and peroxymonosulfate- (PMS) based oxidation systems on rhein in rhubarb residue were compared and investigated. The effects of BS and PMS with two valence states of ferric ion (Fe) on the degradation of rhein in rhubarb residue were optimized for the selection of optimal oxidation system. The influences of reaction temperature, reaction time and initial pH on the removal of rhein under the optimal oxidation system were evaluated. The chemical profiles of rhubarb residue with and without oxidation process were compared by UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, and the degradation effects were investigated by PLS-DA and S plot/OPLS-DA analysis. The results manifested that PMS showed relative higher efficiency than BS on the degradation of rhein. Moreover, Fe(III) promoted the degradation effect of PMS, demonstrated that Fe(III)/PMS is the optimal oxidation system to degrade rhein in rhubarb residue. Further studies indicated that the degradation of rhein by the Fe(III)/PMS oxidation system was accelerated with the prolong of reaction time and the elevation of reaction temperature, and also affected by the initial pH. More importantly, Fe(III)/PMS oxidation system could degrade rhein in rhubarb residue completely under the optimal conditions. In this study, we investigated the freezing-induced acceleration of dye bleaching by chloride-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS). It has been observed that the oxidation of chloride by PMS generates a free chlorine species, such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl), under mild acidic and circumneutral pH condition. This process is the major reason for the enhanced oxidation capacity for electron-rich organic compounds (e.g., phenol) in the chloride-PMS system. However, we demonstrated that the chloride-PMS system clearly reduced the total organic carbon concentration (TOC), whereas the HOCl system did not lead to decrease in TOC. Overall, the chemical reaction is negligible in an aqueous condition if the concentrations of reagents are low, and freezing the solution accelerates the degradation of dye pollutants remarkably. Most notably, the pseudo-first order kinetic rate constant for acid orange 7 (AO7) degradation is approximately 0.252 h -1 with 0.5 mM PMS, 1 mM NaCl, initial pH 3, and a freezing temperature of -20 °C. AO7 degradation is not observed when the solution is not frozen. According to a confocal Raman-microscope analysis and an experiment that used an extremely high dose of reactants, the freeze concentration effect is the main reason for the acceleration phenomenon.
