1. Interpreting the LHAASO Galactic diffuse emission data

Abstract: Recently, the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) collaboration has obtained a measurement of the gamma-ray diffuse emission in the ultra-high energy range, $10-10^3$ TeV after masking the contribution of known sources. The measurement appears to be 2-3 times higher than the gamma-ray signal expected from the hadronic interactions of diffuse cosmic rays with the interstellar medium, potentially suggesting a contribution from unresolved sources. However, estimates of the diffuse emission are affected by large uncertainties that must be accounted for. In this work, we calculate the hadronic gamma-ray diffuse emission including uncertainties in the gas content of the Galactic disk, in the energy and spatial distribution of cosmic rays as well as in the hadronic interaction cross-section. We show that the LHAASO data above $\sim 30$ TeV are consistent with the gamma-ray diffuse emission model when all these uncertainties are taken into account. This implies that, with the current data in this energy range, there is no need to invoke a cosmic ray spectral variation toward the Galactic center, nor a dominant contribution from unresolved sources.

2. On the correlation between young massive star clusters and gamma-ray unassociated sources

Abstract: Star clusters (SCs) are potential cosmic-ray (CR) accelerators and therefore are expected to emit high-energy radiation. However, a clear detection of gamma-ray emission from this source class has only been possible for a handful of cases. This could in principle result from two different reasons: either detectable SCs are limited to a small fraction of the total number of Galactic SCs, or gamma-ray-emitting SCs are not recognized as such and therefore are listed in the ensemble of unidentified sources. In this Letter we investigate this latter scenario, by comparing available catalogs of SCs and HII regions, obtained from Gaia and WISE observations, to the gamma-ray GeV and TeV catalogs built from Fermi-LAT, H.E.S.S. and LHAASO data. The significance of the correlation between catalogs is evaluated by comparing the results with simulations of synthetic populations. A strong correlation emerges between Fermi-LAT unidentified sources and HII regions which trace massive SCs in the earliest (< 1-2 Myr) phase of their life, where no supernova explosions have happened yet, confirming that winds of massive stars can alone accelerate particles and produce gamma-ray emission at least up to GeV energies. The association with TeV-energies sources is less evident. Similarly, no significant association is found between Gaia SCs and GeV nor TeV sources. We ascribe this fact to the larger extension of these objects, but also to an intrinsic bias in the Gaia selection towards SCs surrounded by a lower target gas density, that would otherwise hinder the detection in the optical waveband., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

3. The contribution of winds of star clusters to the Galactic cosmic-ray population

Abstract: Cosmic rays are energetic nuclei that permeate the entire Galactic disk. Their existence requires the presence of powerful particle accelerators. While Galactic supernova explosions may supply the required energy, there is growing evidence that they cannot explain all of the observed properties of cosmic rays, such as their maximum particle energy and isotopic composition. Among Galactic objects, winds from stellar clusters meet the energetic requirement and provide a suitable environment for particle acceleration. The recent detection of some of these objects in gamma rays confirms that they indeed harbor high-energy particles.However, as most supernovae explode inside stellar clusters, it is difficult to distinguish the contribution of winds to particle acceleration. Here we report the detection of young star clusters in the nearby Vela molecular ridge star forming region. The young age of the systems guarantees an unbiased estimate of the stellar CR luminosity free from any supernova or pulsar contamination and allows us to draw conclusions on the acceleration efficiency and the total power supplied by these objects. We demonstrate that much more than 1% of the wind mechanical power is converted into CRs and consequently conclude that a small but non-negligible fraction ~ 1-10% of the CR population is contributed by stellar clusters., Comment: Accepted Manuscript version

4. Contribution of young massive star clusters to Galactic diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission

Abstract: Context: Young massive stellar clusters (YMSCs) have emerged as potential $\gamma$-ray sources, after the recent association of a dozen YMSCs with extended $\gamma$-ray emission. The large size of the detected halos, comparable to that of the wind-blown bubble expected around YMSCs, makes the $\gamma$-ray detection of individual YMSCs rather challenging. As a result, the emission from most of the Galactic YMSCs could be unresolved, thus contributing to the diffuse $\gamma$-ray radiation observed along the Galactic Plane. Aims: In this study, we estimate the possible contribution to the Galactic diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission from a synthetic population of YMSCs, and we compare it with observations obtained with different experiments, from 1 GeV to hundreds of TeV, in two regions of the Galactic Plane. Methods: As the population of galactic YMSCs is only known locally, we evaluate the contribution of $\gamma$-ray emission relying on the simulation of synthetic populations of YMSCs based on the observed properties of local clusters. We compute the $\gamma$-ray emission from each cluster assuming that the radiation is purely hadronic in nature and produced by cosmic rays accelerated at the cluster's collective wind termination shock. Results: We find that the $\gamma$-ray emission from unresolved YMSCs can significantly contribute to the observed Galactic diffuse flux, especially in the inner part of the Galaxy. The result is independent of the assumed particle transport, but an important role is played by Wolf-Rayet stars. The predicted $\gamma$-ray flux should be considered as a lower limit, given that our calculation neglects the contribution of supernovae exploding in YMSCs., Comment: Submitted to A&A letter on 06/05/24

5. Detection prospects of very and ultra high-energy gamma rays from extended sources with ASTRI, CTA, and LHAASO

Abstract: Context. The recent discovery of several ultra high-energy gamma-ray emitters in our Galaxy represents a significant advancement towards the characterisation of its most powerful accelerators. Nonetheless, in order to unambiguously locate the regions where the highest energy particles are produced and understand the responsible physical mechanisms, detailed spectral and morphological studies are required, especially given that most of the observed sources were found to be significantly extended. Aims. In these regards, pointing observations with the next-generation Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Observatory and the ASTRI Mini-Array (ASTRI), are expected to provide significant improvements. Here we aim to identify the most promising sources to target in future observations. Methods. For this purpose, we performed a comparative analysis of the expected performance of ASTRI and CTA, computing their differential sensitivities towards extended sources, and further explored their capabilities with respect to specific case studies, including follow-ups of existing gamma-ray source catalogues. Results. We find that almost all of the sources thus far detected by LHAASO-WCDA and in the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey will be in the reach of ASTRI and CTA with about 300 and 50 hours of exposure, respectively. For the highest energy emitters detected by LHAASO-KM2A, in turn, we provide a list of the most promising objects that would require further investigation. We additionally examined specific classes of sources in order to identify potentially detectable gamma-ray emitters, such as passive molecular clouds (i.e. illuminated by the cosmic-ray sea) and pulsars surrounded by a halo of runaway particles., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. 7. Gamma-ray emission from the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 and multimessenger implications for ultra-fast outflows

Abstract: The enhanced activity typical of the core of Seyfert galaxies can drive powerful winds where high-energy phenomena can occur. In spite of their high power content, the number of such non-jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected in gamma rays is very limited. In this Letter, we report the identification and measurement of the gamma-ray flux from NGC 4151, a Seyfert galaxy located at about 15.8 Mpc. The source is known for hosting ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) in its innermost core through X-ray spectroscopic observations, thereby becoming the first UFO host ever recognized in gamma rays. UFOs are mildly relativistic, wide opening angle winds detected in the innermost parsecs of active galaxies where strong shocks can develop. We interpret the gamma-ray flux as a result of diffusive shock acceleration at the wind termination shock of the UFO and inelastic hadronic collisions in its environment. Interestingly, NGC 4151 is also spatially coincident with a weak excess of neutrino events identified by the IceCube neutrino observatory. 8. Probing the galactic cosmic-ray density with current and future $\gamma$-ray instruments

Abstract: Cosmic Rays (CRs) propagating through dense molecular clouds (MCs) produce gamma rays which carry direct information about the CR distribution throughout the Galaxy. Observations of gamma rays in different energy bands allow exploration of the average CR density in the Galactic Disk, the so-called level of the "CR Sea". Fermi-LAT observations have demonstrated the method's feasibility based on two dozen MCs in our Galaxy. However, the potential of Fermi-LAT is limited by the most massive and relatively nearby MCs; thus, the current observations cover only a tiny fraction of the Milky Way. In this paper, we study the prospects of expanding the CR measurements to very and ultra-high energies and remote parts of the Galaxy with the current and next-generation detectors. Based on calculations of fluxes expected from MCs, we formulate the requirements to the sensitivity of the post-Fermi-LAT detectors to map GeV-TeV CRs in the Galactic Disk. We also explore the potential of the current and future air-shower and atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays for the extension of CR studies to multi-TeV and PeV energy bands. We demonstrate that the improvement of the Fermi-LAT sensitivity by a factor of a few would allow a dramatic increase in the number of detectable MCs covering almost the entire Galaxy. 9. Probing the Cosmic Ray density in the inner Galaxy

Abstract: The galactic diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission, as seen by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), shows a sharp peak in the region around 4 kpc from the Galactic center, which can be interpreted either as due to an enhanced density of cosmic-ray accelerators or to a modification of the particle diffusion in that region. Observations of $\gamma$-rays originating in molecular clouds are a unique tool to infer the cosmic-ray density point by point, in distant regions of the Galaxy. We report here the analysis of 11 yr Fermi-LAT data, obtained in the direction of nine molecular clouds located in the 1.5--4.5 kpc region. The cosmic-ray density measured at the locations of these clouds is compatible with the locally measured one. We demonstrate that the cosmic-ray density gradient inferred from the diffuse gamma-ray emission is the result of the presence of cosmic-ray accelerators rather than a global change of the sea of Galactic cosmic rays due to their propagation.

10. Evidence of Cosmic-Ray Excess from Local Giant Molecular Clouds

Abstract: We report the analysis of the Fermi-Large Area Telescope data from six nearby giant molecular clouds (MCs) belonging to the Gould Belt and the Aquila Rift regions. The high statistical {\gamma}-ray spectra above 3 GeV well described by power laws make it possible to derive precise estimates of the cosmic-ray (CR) distribution in the MCs. The comparison of {\gamma}-ray spectra of Taurus, Orion A, and Orion B clouds with the model expected from Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) CR measurements confirms these clouds as passive clouds, immersed in an AMS-02-like CR spectrum. A similar comparison of Aquila Rift, Rho Oph, and Cepheus spectra yields significant deviation in both spectral indices and absolute fluxes, which can imply an additional acceleration of CRs throughout the entire clouds. Besides, the theoretical modeling of the excess {\gamma}-ray spectrum of these clouds, assuming {\pi}0-decay interaction of CRs in the cloud, gives a considerable amount of an enhanced CR energy density and it shows a significant deviation in spectral shapes compared to the average AMS-02 CR spectrum between 30 GeV and 10 TeV. We suggest that this variation in the CR spectrum of Cepheus could be accounted for by an efficient acceleration in the shocks of winds of OB associations, while in Rho Oph, similar acceleration can be provided by multiple T-Tauri stars populated in the whole cloud. In the case of Aquila Rift, the excess in absolute CR flux could be related to an additional acceleration of CRs by supernova remnants or propagation effects in the cloud., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. 11. On the gamma-ray emission of W44 and its surroundings

Abstract: We present the analysis of 9.7 years Fermi-LAT data of the middle-aged supernova remnant W44 and the massive molecular gas complex that surrounds it. We derived a high-quality spectral energy distribution of gamma-radiation of the shell over three decades. The very hard spectrum below 1 GeV supports the earlier claims regarding the hadronic origin of radiation. We also confirm the presence of two extended $\gamma$-ray structures located at two opposite edges of the remnant along its major axis. Based on the high-resolution gas maps, we demonstrate that the gamma-ray structures are caused by the enhanced cosmic-ray density rather than the gradient of the gas distribution. We argue that the revealed cosmic-ray "clouds" suggest an anisotropic character of the escape of high-energy particles from the shell along the magnetic field of the remnant.

12. Probing the 'Sea' of Galactic Cosmic Rays with Fermi-LAT

Abstract: High energy $\gamma$ rays from Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) carry direct information about the spatial and energy distributions of Galactic Cosmic Rays (CRs). The recently released catalogs of GMCs contain sufficiently massive clouds to be used as barometers for probing, through their $\gamma$-ray emission, the density of CRs throughout the Galactic Disk. Based on the data of \fermi{}, we report the discovery of $\gamma$-ray signals from nineteen GMCs located at distances up to 12.5 kpc. The galactocentric radial distribution of the CR density derived from the $\gamma$-ray and CO observations of these objects, as well as from some nearby clouds that belong to the Gould Belt complex, unveil a homogeneous \textquotedblleft sea" of CRs with a constant density and spectral shape close to the flux of directly (locally) measured CRs. We found noticeable deviations from the \textquotedblleft sea level" only in some locations characterized by enhanced CR density in the galactocentric 4--6 kpc ring. Furthermore, we found a hint for fluctuations of the CR density in different locations within the same 4--6 kpc ring. The confirmation of this result with the next-generation $\gamma$-ray detectors based on the higher quality data and denser coverage of galactocentric distances, would have dramatic implications for the understanding of the origin of Galactic CRs.

13. The contribution of unresolved sources on the gamma-ray spectrum of molecular clouds

Abstract: Fermi-LAT observations of the large-scale diffuse gamma-ray emission unveiled that in some locations, towards the inner Galaxy, the spectrum of this component is harder than the local one, measured at the Earth position. If this signal is associated with the “truly” diffuse emission produced by the interaction of cosmic rays (CRs) with the interstellar medium (ISM) then its observed spectral features can be interpreted as indirect evidence of a CR spectral hardening toward the Galactic center. However, in order to correctly interpret the data, the contribution from unresolved sources has to be taken into account. Newly developed theoretical models showed that the cumulative flux produced by unresolved pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) added to the “truly” diffuse emission significantly shapes the spectrum of the large-scale diffuse emission, challenging the CR spectral hardening hypothesis. In light of the recent results, we discuss the effect of unresolved PWNe on the observed spectra of the diffuse emission with a particular focus on molecular clouds (MCs). We analyze the influence of unresolved sources on clouds of different sizes and locations. Finally, we provide a prescription on how to choose the regions to target in order to have an unbiased determination of the “truly” diffuse emission.

Abstract: Direct measurements of Cosmic Rays (CRs) can not extend much further than the Solar System. In order to probe the so-called “sea” of Galactic Cosmic Rays, one should rely on secondary emission. Gamma rays produced in the interstellar gas, when hit by high energy particles, trace the energy distribution of the parent CRs. Giant Molecular Clouds, being huge reservoirs of hydrogen, serve as perfect targets for interaction with CRs. The high particle density in these objects enables to have enhanced  emission from small isolated location, and hence to derive information about single spots of the Milky Way. We analyzed more than 9 years data of Fermi-LAT from 18 molecular clouds, located in different regions from 100 pc to more than 10 kpc from us, allowing us to have the most comprehensive study on Galactic Cosmic Rays from Molecular Clouds ever.

Abstract: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC 2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 779 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0779, Detecting and studying galactic gamma-ray sources emitting very-high energy photons sheds light on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays presumably created in these sources. Currently, there are few sources emitting photons with energies exceeding 100 TeV. In this work we revisit the unidentified source MGRO J1908+06, initially detected by Milagro, using an updated H.E.S.S. dataset and analysis pipeline. The vicinity of the source contains a supernova remnant and pulsars as well as molecular clouds. This makes the identification of the primary source(s) of galactic cosmic rays as well as the nature of the gamma-ray emission challenging, especially in light of the recent HAWC and LHAASO detection of the high energy tail of its spectrum. Abstract: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 777 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0777, Fast radio bursts (FRB) are enigmatic powerful single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a number of soft gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift-BAT satellite, which triggered the follow-up program of the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR1935+2154 over a 2 hour window few hours prior to the FRB detection by STARE2 and CHIME. The observations overlapped with other X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT, thus providing first observations of a magnetar in a flaring state in the very-high energy domain. Abstract: Gamma-ray astronomy provides a unique tool to study Galactic cosmic rays far from Earth. Cosmic rays in fact, during their propagation, interact with the interstellar medium, producing high-energy gamma rays that can be detected from Earth. These gamma rays carry the information on the origin and the energetics of the parent cosmic rays at the location of interaction. The detection is facilitated in regions with enhanced gas density, like giant molecular clouds, or in regions with enhanced cosmic-ray flux, for example near an accelerator. In this thesis, I studied both scenarios by analyzing the data accumulated by the Fermi Large Area Telescope between a few tens of MeV up to almost 1 TeV. Firstly, the gamma-ray emission arising from giant molecular clouds, distributed all over the Milky Way, has been investigated, obtaining an unprecedented mapping of the cosmic-ray distribution in the Galaxy. Secondly, the emission that originates in the medium surrounding the supernova remnant W44 has been studied, confirming the presence of recently accelerated particles and unveiling evidence for anisotropic escape. Finally, the potential of the current and future gamma-ray instruments in detecting the radiation emitted from the interstellar medium, both in correspondence of clouds and in the vicinity of accelerators, is evaluated and discussed.
