Abstract

Let $d,k$ be positive integers. We call generalized spaces the cartesian product of the $d$-dimensional sphere, $\mathbb{S}^d$, with the $k$-dimensional Euclidean space, $\mathbb{R}^k$. We consider the class ${\mathcal P}(\mathbb{S}^d \times \mathbb{R}^k)$ of continuous functions $\varphi: [-1,1] \times [0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ such that the mapping $C: \left ( \mathbb{S}^d \times\mathbb{R}^k \right )^2 \to \mathbb{R}$, defined as $C \Big ( (x,y),(x^{\prime},y^{\prime})\Big ) = \varphi \Big ( \cos \theta(x,x^{\prime}), \|y-y^{\prime}\| \Big )$, $(x,y), \; (x^{\prime},y^{\prime}) \in \mathbb{S}^d \times \mathbb{R}^k$, is positive definite. 8. Rudin Extension Theorems on Product Spaces, Turning Bands, and Random Fields on Balls cross Time

Abstract

Characteristic functions that are radially symmetric have a dual interpretation, as they can be used as the isotropic correlation functions of spatial random fields. Extensions of isotropic correlation functions from balls into $d$-dimensional Euclidean spaces, $\R^{d}$, have been understood after Rudin. Yet, extension theorems on product spaces are elusive, and a counterexample provided by Rudin on rectangles suggest that the problem is quite challenging. This paper provides extension theorem for multiradial characteristic functions that are defined in balls embedded in $\R^d$ cross, either $\R^{\dd}$ or the unit sphere $\S^{\dd}$ embedded in $\R^{\dd+1}$, for any two positive integers $d$ and $\dd$. We then examine Turning Bands operators that provide bijections between the class of multiradial correlation functions in given product spaces, and multiradial correlations in product spaces having different dimensions. The combination of extension theorems with Turning Bands provides a connection with random fields that are defined in balls cross linear or circular time.

Abstract

In this paper we consider Positive Definite functions on products $\Omega_{2q}\times\Omega_{2p}$ of complex spheres, and we obtain a condition, in terms of the coefficients in their disc polynomial expansions, which is necessary and sufficient for the function to be Strictly Positive Definite. The result includes also the more delicate cases in which $p$ and/or $q$ can be $1$ or $\infty$. The condition we obtain states that a suitable set in $\mathbb{Z}^2$, containing the indexes of the strictly positive coefficients in the expansion, must intersect every product of arithmetic progressions.

Abstract

We provide walks through dimensions for isotropic positive definite functions defined over complex spheres. We show that the analogues of Mont\'ee and Descente operators as proposed by Beatson and zu Castell [J. Approx. Theory 221 (2017), 22-37] on the basis of the original Matheron operator [Les variables r\'egionalis\'ees et leur estimation, Masson, Paris, 1965], allow for similar walks through dimensions. We show that the Mont\'ee operators also preserve, up to a constant, strict positive definiteness. For the Descente operators, we show that strict positive definiteness is preserved under some additional conditions, but we provide counterexamples showing that this is not true in general. We also provide a list of parametric families of (strictly) positive definite functions over complex spheres, which are important for several applications.

Abstract

Phenyl urea herbicides such as diuron and linuron are commonly used in agriculture to eliminate weeds. Their uncontrolled use can cause environmental problems. In this study, the adsorption of these herbicides was evaluated using activated carbon from coffee grounds, activated with zinc chloride (AC-ZnCl2, 100% purity), nitric acid (AC-HNO3, 65% purity), and commercially activated (AC-C) carbon for comparison purposes. The spent coffee grounds were transformed into activated carbon through the calcination process. The highest removal efficiency for diuron 40 mg∙L−1 and linuron 31 mg∙L−1 was obtained using the ZnCl2-activated adsorbent, being 100% and 45%, respectively. The best pH range was between 4 and 6. Adsorption kinetic studies showed that pseudo-first and second-order models fit the experimental data, with the adsorption rate increasing rapidly within 60 min for the concentrations tested. Adsorption isotherms indicated that the Langmuir model provided the best fit for diuron, while the Freundlich model was more appropriate for linuron. The efficiency of the adsorption process using activated carbon (AC) was confirmed by the toxicity analysis of diuron and linuron solutions before and after adsorption with AC. Abstract

The emerging pollutant octocrylene is not efficiently removed from effluents by conventional treatment and is recurrently found in rivers. This study evaluated the adsorption of octocrylene using commercial carbon and biochar from spent coffee grounds activated with ZnCl2. The two adsorbents had an efficiency of approximately 100% in pollutant removal throughout the experimental design. The kinetics and equilibrium isotherms showed a good correlation with the experimental data. The kinetics showed adsorption of the contaminant in 40 min for both adsorbents. The model equilibrium isotherms with the best fit and adsorption capacity was Langmuir for biochar, with a capacity of 37.822 ± 0.005 µg∙mg−1 compared to 33.602 ± 0.202 µg∙mg−1 for commercial carbon. Furthermore, a toxicity analysis of a 600 µg∙L−1 octocrylene solution was carried out before and after adsorption with the two charcoals separately, using Allium cepa roots. Before adsorption, the solution was phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic. After adsorption, the solution obtained for each charcoal no longer caused toxicity to the roots. The charcoals tested had high removal efficiency and adsorption capacity, a condition reiterated by the toxicity results.
