1. Giant magnetoelastic coupling in Love acoustic waveguide based on uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo nanostructured thin film on Quartz ST-cut

Abstract

Coupling between dynamic strain and magnetization in ferromagnetic thin films has attracted special consideration as it presents both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multi-functional devices and information handling. The dynamic strain can be generated by acoustic waves including bulk, surface or guided waves. In this work, we propose the theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of pure shear horizontal (SH) wave with a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film in a delay line configuration fabricated on Quartz ST-90X cut. We evaluate theoretically the evolution of phase velocity as a function of magnetic field and experimentally the variation of the transmission coefficient. A piezomagnetic model was developed allowing us to calculate the elastic stiffness constants of the multilayer as a function of the applied magnetic field. The model was also implemented for acoustic waves dispersion curves calculation. We show that the evolution of phase velocity is dominated by the C66 elastic stiffness constant variation as expected for the case of shear horizontal surface wave. The fabricated device let us exciting both fundamental and third harmonic shear mode at 410 MHz and 1.2 GHz, respectively. For both modes, the theoretical results corroborate very well the experimental ones. At 1.2 GHz the mode exhibits a maximum phase velocity shift close to 2.5% and an attenuation reaching 500 dB/cm, for a sensitivity as high as 250 ppm/Oe. The reported theoretical model and experimental results are of tremendous interest for the development of advanced devices for magnetic field sensing applications as well as investigating magnon-phonon interaction at a fundamental level.

Abstract

Autler-Townes Splitting (ATS) and Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) are similar phenomena but distinct in nature. They have been widely discussed and distinguished by employing the Akaike information criterion (AIC). However, such work is lacking in acoustic system. In this work, the interaction of Love waves with two-line pillared meta-surface is numerically investigated by Finite Element Method. Acoustic analogue of ATS, Fabry-Perot resonance and cavity modes are first demonstrated in two lines of identical pillars by varying the distance between the pillar lines. By detuning the radius of one line of pillars, Fabry-Perot resonance along with two different pillar resonances give rise to the acoustic analogue of EIT (AIT) when the distance between the pillar lines is a multiple of half wavelength. ATS and AIT formula models are used to fit the transmission spectra, showing good agreements with numerical results. The quality of the fit models is quantitatively evaluated by resorting to the AIC. We show that theoretical and analytical discrimination between ATS and AIT are methodologically complementary. Abstract

The interaction of Love waves with square array of pillars deposited on a cavity defined in a 2D holey phononic crystal is numerically investigated using Finite Element Method. First, the existence of SH surface modes is demonstrated separately for phononic crystals that consist of square arrayed holes, or rectangular arrayed Ni pillars, respectively in, or on, a SiO2 film deposited on a ST-cut quartz substrate. The coupling between SH modes and torsional mode in pillars induces a transmission dip that occurs at a frequency located in the range of the band-gap of the holey phononic crystal. Second, a cavity is constructed by removing lines of holes in the holey phononic crystal and results in a transmission peak that matches the dip. The optimal geometrical parameters enable us to create a coupling of the cavity mode and the localized pillar mode by introducing lines of pillars into the cavity, which significantly improved the efficiency of the cavity without increasing the crystal size. The obtained results will pave the way to implement advanced designs of high-performance electroacoustic sensors based on coupling modes in phononic crystals., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

4. Highly confined Love waves modes by defect states in a holey SiO2 /quartz phononic crystal

Abstract

Highly confined Love modes are demonstrated in a phononic crystal based on a square array of etched holes in SiO 2 deposited on the ST-cut quartz. An optimal choice of the geometrical parameters contributes to a wide stop-band for shear waves' modes. The introduction of a defect by removing lines of holes leads to the nearly flat modes within the band gap and consequently paves the way to implement advanced designs of electroacoustic filters and high-performance cavity resonators. The calculations are based on the finite element method in considering the elastic and piezoelectric properties of the materials. Interdigital transducers are employed to measure the transmission spectra. The geometrical parameters enabling the appearance of confined cavity modes within the band gap and the efficiency of the electric excitation were investigated.

Abstract

A thermoacoustic sound generation model, based on the classical balance equations of the continuum mechanics, is here developed for the cylindrical and the spherical thermoacoustic wave generation. In both geometries, the model considers an arbitrary multilayered structure, where each layer can be fluid or solid and it is characterized by the fully coupled thermo-visco-acoustic response. It means that the viscous behavior and the thermal conduction are considered in each layer. The model is based on a unified representation of cylindrical or spherical thermoacoustic waves, which is valid for both fluid and solid phases. Thanks to the continuity of temperature, particle velocity, normal stress, and heat flux between adjacent layers, the model can be implemented by means of a versatile matrix approach, allowing flexible analysis and design of cylindrical or spherical thermophones. Any thermoacoustic variable can be determined at any position, any frequency, and for any input power. The results are compared with the models already existing in the literature, and the underlying physics is thoroughly discussed. The analysis is focused on a better understanding of the thermoacoustic generation with application to the state of the art of the thermophone technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports the realization of Through Silicon Vias (TSV) filled with electrodeposited copper (Cu) for the fabrication of aeronautics dedicated thermal MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors. The micro-sensors are designed to measure the skin friction of the airflow on a structure. For testing in real conditions on an aircraft, a solid integration is required. Therefore, a production batch was realized with TSV process developed and added to the sensor manufacturing process. The TSV process is composed of several steps including the realization of the metal membrane based electrode for the electrodeposition, deep silicon dry etching, copper filling and polishing. The sensors process followed the TSV process and the TSV equipped sensors chip were successfully fabricated. The electro-thermal characterizations of the TSV sensors chip demonstrated the same performances as the chips without TSV. Then, the micro-sensors were packaged allowing a flush-mounted integration on objects. A first test was done in wind tunnel before testing on flight.

Abstract

New designs based on S0 Lamb modes in AlN thin layer resonating structures coupled with the implementation of structural elements in SiO2, are theoretically analyzed by the Finite Element Method (FEM). This study compares the typical characteristics of different interdigital transducer (IDTs) configurations, involving either a continuous SiO2 cap layer, or structured SiO2 elements, showing their performance in the usual terms of electromechanical coupling coefficient (K2), phase velocity, and temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF), by varying structural parameters and boundary conditions. This paper shows how to reach temperature-compensated, high-performance resonator structures based on ribbon-structured SiO2 capping. The addition of a thin diamond layer can also improve the velocity and electromechanical coupling coefficient, while keeping zero TCF and increasing the solidity of the membranes. Beyond the increase in performance allowed by such resonator configurations, their inherent structure shows additional benefits in terms of passivation, which makes them particularly relevant for sensing applications in stern environments. Abstract

Thermoacoustic sound generation offers a promising wideband alternative to mechanically driven loudspeakers. Over the past decade, the development of nanomaterials with new physicochemical properties promoted wide interest in thermophone technology. Indeed, several thermophone structures based on suspended nanowires, graphene sheets, highly porous foams, or sponges have been investigated. At the same time, theoretical models have been developed to predict the frequency and power spectra of these devices. However, most of the models have taken into consideration a solid homogeneous material for representing the thermophone generating layer, and its microstructure was, therefore, neglected. If this assumption holds for thin dense materials, it is not acceptable for thick and porous thermophone devices. Hence, a model able to describe the behavior of highly porous foam- or spongelike generating layers is proposed. It is based on a two-temperature scheme since the thermal equilibrium is not typically attained between the foam material and the embedded air. To do this, the fluid equations for the air are coupled with the heat equation for the solid foam through boundary conditions mimicking the energy exchange at the contact surface between them. The behavior of the main physical variables within the porous generating layer is explained and comparisons with recent experimental results are thoroughly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The electric field (E) controlled magnetism in the multiferroic heterostructure comprising polycrystalline yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film, Pt electrodes, and lead magnesium niobate-lead zirconate titanate (PMN-PZT) ceramic is presented in this work. The electric-field-dependent magnetization and susceptibility of YIG film reveal the strain-mediated transformation of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. A strong converse magnetoelectric (CME) effect has been observed in the YIG/Pt/PMN-PZT/Pt heterostructure, and the CME coefficient can reach 17 × 10−8 s/m at 0 Oe and 4.2 kV/cm. The reversible magnetization switching by means of a low voltage pulse (±4.6 kV/cm) can be realized at 0 Oe in the YIG/Pt/PMN-PZT/Pt heterostructure, and the E-tunable susceptibility can reach Δχ/χ0+ = 55.5% at 20 Oe and 4 kV/cm. Abstract

The open cavity is a common geometry in weapon bays, wheel wells or landing gear doors. The flow developing over such a geometry has been extensively studied since Roshko [1] and complex dynamic phenomena develop in it. The shear layer destabilises over the cavity and impacts the downstream corner of the cavity. The acoustic waves generated from this location propagate upstream the cavity exciting the shear layer instabilities. This results in self-sustained oscillations in the flow, which can induce structural vibrations and noise radiation [2] [3].Therefore damping these oscillations is of interest. We propose a design of micro-valve based on MMMS technology and integrate an array of 15 of these microfluidic device to the upstream wall of an open-cavity, placed in a wind tunnel at the ONERA (Office National dEtudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales), in order to implement an open-loop flow control strategy. The MMMS design consist in a pressurised air inlet, a channel surmounted by a flexible resonator made in elastomer material (Silastic) and a submillimetric outlet. A NdFeB permanent magnet is fixed on the flexible resonator enabling the channel height modulation and hence modulating the outlet velocity, when an electrical current runs in the coil surrounding the magnets. The microvalve can deliver a high-speed jet with an outlet velocity of 150 m/s (with a submillimetric outlet) pulsed at frequencies up to 500Hz [4]. The actuators outlet design was enhanced and adapted to the control of cavity flow. Therefore, the submillimetric outlet was modified in order to obtain an outlet velocity spread over a slot. Performances of these adapted actuators were assessed with hot wire measurements performed at the ONERA Lille. For a chosen flow regime, effects of quasi-steady and pulsed jets on the cavity oscillations were assessed through hot wire and unsteady pressure measurements, performed at the cavity downstream corner, where the cavity dynamics is the most amplified. Depending on the microvalves performances and the flow regime, quasi-steady jets enabled a decrease of 20dB in the cavity oscillations sound pressure level, deduced from the unsteady pressure measurements. Regarding pulsed jets, depending on the forcing induced by the actuators a locking phenomenon was observed. Therefore, the actuators authority proved to be sufficient to shift the cavity natural oscillation frequency towards the microvalves actuation frequency. The open-loop experiments campaign aims at preparing the closed-loop flow control campaign. Therefore, the system transfer function identification was performed with the pulsed jets in the linear limit assumption. Abstract

poster session A2P-15: POWER SOURCES & ACTUATORS II; International audience; This paper presents and discusses micro-magneto-mechanical valves designed for cavity flow control. Realized using microfabrication techniques and rapid prototyping, the micro-valves exhibit a small footprint and adequate performances for low-speed cavity flow control. An array of 15 micro-valves was successfully integrated on a cavity model. Cavity flow control experiments demonstrated the impact of the micro-jets on the cavity resonance.

Abstract

Highly confined Love modes are demonstrated in a phononic crystal based on a square array of etched holes in SiO 2 deposited on the ST-cut quartz. An optimal choice of the geometrical parameters contributes to a wide stop-band for shear waves' modes. The introduction of a defect by removing lines of holes leads to the nearly flat modes within the bandgap and, consequently, paves the way to implement advanced designs of electroacoustic filters and high-performance cavity resonators. The calculations are based on the finite element method in considering the elastic and piezoelectric properties of the materials. Interdigital transducers are employed to measure the transmission spectra. The geometrical parameters enabling the appearance of confined cavity modes within the bandgap and the efficiency of the electric excitation were investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The artificial multiferroic heterostructure used in this work is composed by an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film deposited by radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering on a metalized PMN-PZT ceramic. We demonstrate, thanks to the well-known converse magnetoelectric (CME) coupling, the control of the magnetic state of the YIG film by means of a low electric field applied to the PMN-PZT ceramic. In particular, it is shown that the variations of the magnetization induced by the strain are functions of the magnetic sate of the film. It is shown that the maximum amplitude variation is observed at the coercive magnetic field (Hc), whereas when H increases, the strain effect has a limited impact on the film magnetization. A second effect has also been remarked on the magnetization of the YIG film but only after the first strain induced cycle has been applied. These variations, observed only under low applied magnetic fields, can be attributed to the re-orientation of some magnetic moments which are easy to switch under low magnetic fields. We find that after poling the YIG film, i.e., applying a magnetic field on it, the initial state is restored. The CME coupling coefficient is determined for different magnetic states of the YIG film, and the maximum value 11 × 10−8 s/m is obtained at H = Hc and E = Ec (the coercive field of the PMN-PZT ceramic). The relative susceptibility tunability available for the heterostructure proposed is 16.8% for an electric field applied between 0 and −4 kV/cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Intermetallic heterostructures of rare-earth and transition metals exhibit physical properties prospective for various applications. These structures combine giant magnetostriction, controllable magnetic anisotropy, magneto-optical activity and allow spin reorientation transitions (SRT) induced by magnetic field at room temperature. Here, we present the results of a study of spin dynamics induced by ultrafast optical excitation in the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {TbCo}_2\hbox {/FeCo}$$\end{document}TbCo2/FeCo heterostructure. The time dependence of the light polarization rotation excited by a pump optical pulse with a duration of 35 fs was measured in the total range of the SRT created by external DC magnetic field. We found hysteretic dependence of the polarization rotation on magnetizing field that is specific for spin dynamics near SRT. Enhancement of the rotation is observed in the critical points of the SRT and near the points of magnetization switch from metastable to stable spin states. In the time-domain, two characteristic delays of 20 ps and 200 ps were found, corresponding to the maximum deviation of the light polarization after excitation. The first is explained by the precession motion of spins out of the plane of the structure. The latter is accounted for the spin in-plane deviation from its initial position and thermal relaxation of the anisotropy.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, we propose a theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of guided pure shear horizontal (SH) wave within a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film deposited on Quartz ST-90°X cut in a delay line configuration. We evaluate theoretically the evolution of phase velocity as a function of magnetic field and experimentally the variation of S21 transmission coefficient (amplitude and phase). An equivalent piezomagnetic model based on pure magnetoelastic coupling was used (developed allowing us) to calculate the elastic stiffness constants of the multilayer as a function of the bias magnetic field. The model was also implemented for acoustic waves dispersion curves calculation. We show that the evolution of the phase velocity with respect to the bias magnetic field is dominated by the C66 elastic stiffness constant as expected for the case of shear horizontal surface acoustic wave. In the fabricated device, both fundamental and third harmonic shear mode are excited at 410 MHz and 1.2 GHz, respectively. For both modes, the theoretical and experimental results are in agreement. At 1.2 GHz the guiding of the acoustic wave in the ferromagnetic thin film enhances the sensitivity to the bias magnetic field with a maximum phase velocity shift close to 2.5 % and an attenuation reaching 500 dB/cm, for a sensitivity as high as 250 ppm/Oe, which is better than what has been reported in literature so far. We also report that, from a specific ratio between the thin film thickness and the acoustic wavelength, the bias magnetic field can induce a breaking of the acoustic wave polarization, leading to an acoustic mode conversion.
