Abstract

The effect of different X ray radiation qualities on the calibration of mammographic dosemeters was investigated within the framework of a EUROMET (European Collaboration in Measurement Standards) project. The calibration coefficients for two ionization chambers and two semiconductor detectors were established in 13 dosimetry calibration laboratories for radiation qualities used in mammography. They were compared with coefficients for other radiation qualities, including those defined in ISO 4037-1, with first half value layers in the mammographic range. The results indicate that the choice of the radiation quality is not crucial for instruments with a small energy dependence of the response. However, the radiation quality has to be chosen carefully if instruments with a marked dependence of their response to the radiation energy are calibrated

Abstract

This work compiles the results of a study done in different regions of the country using fin situ gamma spectrometry and low-dose instrumental techniques to determine the environmental dose rate and its main components. It was demostrated that the values of the environmental gamma dose rate in the studied zones ranges from 33.3 to 65.8nGy/h. These values are characteristics for zones with low environmental radioactive background. In determining the cosmic component of such dose rate, its mean value is 35.1 nGy/h wich sometimes represents even the 100% of the overale dose rate. It was determined that the main radionuclide contributors to the terrestrial component have a natural origin, that is K-40 and the radioactive isotopes that belongs to the uranium and torium series. Abstract

The IAEA has developed a TLD system with the aim of checking 137Cs radiation protection calibrations provided by the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDLs). The SSDLs are supplied with TLDs and they are asked to irradiate them at 5 mGy air kerma. The dosemeters are evaluated by the IAEA. The routine service was established in 1999. The service is organised in two runs per year. Each run involves 15 laboratories. The results of two pilot studies (1997-1998) and audits (1999-2000) are presented. They show that about 30% of the results are outside the acceptance limit of +/-3.5%. This limit has been set up as an acceptable deviation and is based on the value of the relative standard uncertainty of the TL measurements, evaluated at 1.8%. Participants with results outside the acceptance limit were approached with the aim to resolve discrepancies.
