Abstract

Healthcare is expected to increasingly shift care out of inpatient settings thanks to wearable monitoring systems. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an optical technique already integrated into wrist-worn commercial products which presents significant advantages in terms of cost and dimensions. PPG-based devices, despite their ability to detect multiple cardiovascular parameters, are affected by several influencing conditions that depend both on technological or environmental variables, and on intra- and inter-subject variability that influences the whole measurement chain and reliability, hindering an objective characterization of PPG devices. Plus, the lack of standardization for data collection and processing leads to the lack of generalizability and reproducibility of results, preventing the full exploitation of the potential prognostic capacity of this technology. Thus, this review aims not only to summarize the main influencing parameters of PPG technology, which should be addressed when testing the sensor, but also to suggest tentative guidelines for a possible future standardization initiative.

2. Association of Work Attitudes and Mental Health with Level or Type of Income Support Received by Unemployed People with Disabilities.

Abstract

This New Zealand study investigated employment attitudes and their relationship to mental health of 137 long-term unemployed people with disabilities. Results suggested that level of income support was not related to employment attitudes. People receiving the invalid's benefit had high levels of work commitment in contrast to those receiving accident compensation or unemployment benefits. (DB)

Abstract

The baroreflex (BR) is an important physiological regulatory mechanism which reacts to blood pressure perturbations with reflex changes of target variables such as the heart period (electrocardiogram derived RR interval) or the peripheral vascular resistance (PVR). Evaluation of cardiac chronotropic (RR as a target variable) and vascular resistance (target PVR) BR arms was in previous studies mainly based on the use of the spontaneous variability of the systolic or diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), respectively, as the input signals. The use of other blood pressure measures such as the mean blood pressure (MBP) as an input signal for BR analysis is still under investigation. Making the assumption that the strength of coupling along the BR indicates the more appropriate input signal for baroreflex analysis, we employ partial spectral decomposition to assess in the frequency domain the causal coupling from SBP, MBP or DBP to RR or PVR. Noninvasive beat-to-beat recording of RR, SBP, MBP and DBP and PVR was performed in 39 and 36 volunteers in whom orthostatic and cognitive loads were evoked respectively through head-up tilt and mental arithmetic task. At rest, the MBP was most tightly coupled with RR, in contrast to the analysis of the vascular resistance BR arm where the results showed similar importance of all blood pressure input signals. During orthostasis, the increased importance of SBP as the input signal for BR analysis along the cardiac chronotropic arm was demonstrated. In addition, the gain from MBP to RR was more sensitive to physiological state changes compared to gains with SBP or DBP signal as inputs. We conclude that the coupling strength depends not only on the analysed baroreflex arm but also on the selection of the input blood pressure signal and the physiological state. The Department of Rehabilitation Studies at Massey University (New Zealand) incorporates attitude-changing strategies during the students' first year in the program. These strategies involve personal contact with people with disabilities, provision of accurate information about disabilities, and simulation or role playing. This New Zealand study examined attitudes toward persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) via a survey of 35 people with SCI, 27 SCI rehabilitation workers, 16 outpatient hospital rehabilitation workers, and 37 people from the general population. 6. Verticality and Conflicting Identities in the Contemporary Chinese City: The Urban Development of Suzhou Industrial Park

Abstract

The unprecedented pace of urbanization and modernization of China in the last three decades has led to a huge restructuring of the pre-existent urban fabrics and the progressive reshaping of the city form, its inner structure and urban landscape, by promoting the growth of many new high-rise residential superblocks and suburban commercial, industrial, and business districts built around major Chinese cities. Famous for the UNESCO protected urban gardens, Suzhou has over 2,500 years of history. Like in many Chinese cities, the low-rise urban landscape of the old city clashes visually with the verticality of the contemporary built environment, especially evident in the new residential urban zones of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). Focusing on four selected case studies of large-scale housing projects in SIP, the paper explores how these new residential communities have engaged the themes of verticality and high-density living to create extensive constellations of modern but uniform high-rise urban communities. It also considers how and comment about the contradictions within this acontextual modern urban landscape, which mirror to some extent a larger trend in Chinese and other East Asian cities, in a phase of exceptional urban development and economic growth at the turn of the 21st century.

10. City and place identity in SIP Suzhou: Re-learning forgotten lessons from modern western urban design theory

Abstract

The impressive urban growth of China in the last few decades has been largely based on a sustained and state-sponsored economic development which by financing infrastructure development, fostering industrial and manufacturing production, and promoting an aggressive campaign to modernize the country, has deliberately pursued economic and social policies aimed at concentrating activities and people and reshaping and redesign many urban areas of the cities, with the result that the urban landscapes are changing rapidly, with mixed results, but at the cost of neglecting the safeguarding of the genuine spirit and still valuable features of the local places. Reflecting on the recent urban transformation in Suzhou, the paper intends to stress the importance of re-learning the lessons taught by a few highly influential architects and planners, and how the rediscovery of their theses and principles could be a precious resource to look at in order to initiate a different discourse on the design of vibrant, meaningful and beautiful urban spaces more in tune with the local identity.

Abstract

Calculating the efficiency of a solar cell depends on a precise knowledge of its area. Indeed, the photoresponse uniformity is essential to improve the manufacturing process. In this work we report on Laser Beam Induced Current measurements performed on CIG(S,Se)2 modules and Dye Sensitized Solar Cells. These measurements, performed via a green and a red HeNe lasers both operating at an optical irradiance of 1 Sun, allowed to obtain an accurate photoresponse map of the specimens and highlighted the non-uniformities with a spatial resolution of 400 μm and 80 μm, respectively.

Abstract

A design and implementation of a portable functional Near InfraRed Spectroscopy embedded system prototype is described. In this theoretical and experimental work, we present an embedded system hosting 64 LED sources and 128 Silicon PhotoMultiplier detectors (SiPM). The elementary part of the structure is a flexible probe “leaf” consisting of 16 SiPMs, 4 couples of LEDs, each operating at two wavelengths, and a temperature sensor. The hardware system is based on an ARM main microcontroller that allows to perform both the switching time of LEDs and the acquisition of the SiPM outputs. The performed preliminary experimental tests achieved very promising results, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our fNIRS system.

Abstract

The extraction of biomedical parameters, for early disease detection, is assuming today an ever increasing and fundamental importance. In particular, in the cardiologic field, the preejection period (PEP) is the duration of the iso-volumetric left ventricle contraction until the aortic valve opening. This parameter is a non-constant additive delay, which rapidly changes in response to stress, emotion and physical effort. To estimate this period, several wearable electronics devices have been developed in literature, and among them the Impedance Cardiogram equipment is the most used. However, these systems are often expensive and bulky. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective and easy to employ ECG+PPG combo system able to measure pre-ejection period in a cardiac cycle. The employed system is composed of an ECG acquisition board able to host two PPG probes too.

Abstract

The toxicity of dietary acrylamide (AA) depends on its biotransformation pathways, in which phase I cytochrome P-450 enzymes transform AA into glycidamide. The phase II enzyme glutathione_S_transferase (GST) catalyses the conjugation of AA with glutathione (GSH). GST induction by phytochemicals like sulforaphane (SFN) plays a role in chemoprevention. Here, the effect of SFN on the detoxification of AA through GSH conjugation was studied in Caco-2 cells. GSH adducts with AA and SFN were synthesized, identified by NMR and quantified by LC-MS/MS. Caco-2 cells were treated with either 2.5 mM AA, 10 mu M SFN or the combination of both for 24 h. Concentrations of GSH conjugates (GSH-AA, GSH-SFN, SFN-GSH-AA), AA and SFN were analysed by LC-MS/MS. Abstract

Sulphur is essential in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites with high nutritional value that typically accumulate in Brassica species. Among these, glucosinolates are the most representative. The level of glucosinolates in these plants is highly dependent on genetic factors as well as environmental determinants, such as the available soil sulphur content. There is an increasing need of defining the metabolic profile of Brassica species in response to both cultivation practices and environmental factors since a targeted modification of its constituents may significantly affect the functional properties and the commercial value of these vegetables. Here, we report on the effects of sulphur fertilization on flavonols, phenolic acids and glucosinolates contents of two friariello (Brassica rapa L. subsp. sylvestris L. Janch. var. esculenta Hort.) ecotypes—Lingua di Cane and Sorrentino. Friariello quality in terms of sprouts plus inflorescence nitrate and chlorophyll contents was also assessed. We found a significantly higher flavonols content in the ecotype Sorrentino, whereas its glucosinolates level was relatively smaller compared to Lingua di Cane. Sulphur fertilization significantly improved the antioxidant activity of both ecotypes and was associated with a genotype-dependent significant reduction of leaf nitrate content.

Abstract

The article reports the results of a Mokken Scale Procedure (MSP) developing a hierarchical cross-national scale gauging attitudes toward illegal immigration, and a subsequent qualitative cross-national assessment of this scale. Responses to a 20-item Likert-type-scale were collected in two national representative surveys in the Netherlands and New Zealand. The MSP analysis yielded a cumulative scale with the same four items for each with an acceptable 'scalability' in both samples, of H >.40. This cross-national four-item scale was evaluated by means of in-depth interviewing nine participants in the Netherlands and 15 participants in New Zealand. Analysis of the interviews shows that individually ranking the items of the scale is similar to the rank order generated by MSP, but the individual evaluation of the degree of negativity of items strongly depends on the way illegal immigrants are framed by subjects. The contribution of a mixed methods approach is discussed. It is suggested that the present quantitative measuring instruments measure a general average attitude, which may be likened to a measure of the average temperature of a country at a certain moment, while qualitative evaluations vary with the way illegal immigrants are framed by individuals, like variations in local temperature. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

47. Social inclusion in workplaces where people with intellectual disabilities are employed: implications for supported employment professionals.

Abstract

This research investigated elements of workplace culture across eight New Zealand workplaces where people with intellectual disability were employed. Using a semi-structured interview format, eight employers were surveyed, and variations in job entry procedures, orientation and training, company policies, job design, customs and practice, and social opportunities were examined. Factors influencing inclusion in the workplace culture of a total of 16 employees, eight supported employees and eight co-workers without disabilities, were identified and compared. The findings indicated that supported workers had a lower level of inclusion than co-workers. Several factors influencing inclusion of employees in the workplace culture were identified; full-time vs. part-time, level of employment support, limiting expectations and employer/co-worker attitudes. The use of a workplace culture survey by supported employment professionals has several benefits, including the identification of potentially inclusive workplaces, the facilitation of a good person and workplace environment match, the possibility of monitoring inclusion levels, encouragement of full work shift placements, and the provision of effective support on the job. 48. Workplace culture analysis where people with intellectual disabilities work: A case study approach.

Abstract

Background Research evidence suggests that investigation of workplace culture assists in enhancing social inclusion of and job retention by people with intellectual disability. Method This research explored the potential of using Hagner's (2000) Workplace Culture Survey to identify inclusive characteristics of eight New Zealand workplaces where people with intellectual disability were employed by surveying eight employers. Eight workers with intellectual disability and eight co-workers were surveyed to assess inclusion levels in the culture of these workplaces. Results The results indicated that four workplaces had a strong workplace culture. Co-workers were generally well included in the workplace culture, whereas only three of the workers with intellectual disability were included to a similar extent. Full-time employment enhanced inclusion levels. Workers with higher support needs appear to be less included. Conclusion The use of Hagner's Workplace Culture Survey is helpful in identifying inclusive workplaces and inclusion levels of both workers with intellectual disability and co-workers.
