In this paper, state-of-the-art wearable devices and related sensors that these devices use for non-invasive human health monitoring are analysed. The focus of the given device analysis is to describe which data is acquired for AI applications estimating human health status. This way, given analysis, provides the vertical from the sensor itself to its final applications that state-of-the-art work presents.

Well-being, aging and health is a multidimensional concept covering well-being, aging and health aspects of individuals, communities and ecosystems in the appropriate contexts. Various technology- enabled solutions can contribute to well-being, aging and health goals, and one of key trending technologies enabling digital transformation in healthcare and medicine is Internet of Things. This paper proposes an approach to industrial Internet of Things-based ontology development for well-being, aging and health, in order to structure the knowledge concepts needed for data acquisition and the overall system to contribute to well-being, aging and health. Given its multidisciplinary nature and the need to make use of semantic structures for data processing and usage in Internet of Things-based applications, this scoping review elaborates on usage of ontologies for implementation of Internet of Things solutions, aiming at extending the ontology of choice, reusing parts of existing ontologies and adding new constructs for cross-domain reasoning. In order to enable more efficient use of resources at the application level, an abstract layer of semantic middleware should reason on acquired data and allow for application business logic to trigger actuators while preserving safety and security.

The development of smart technologies in the building sector provides better insight into occupant behavior and brings new opportunities for energy and performance management. Smart technological solutions are being applied in various segments of building performance. Within heating and cooling systems, new trends are directed toward developing novel operation and regulation strategies based on the input from sensory devices. Proposed studies through the literature are trying to provide more comfortable environmental conditions for the occupants in the buildings, putting users as the crucial factors for system design while considering also rational energy usage. Because smart buildings are increasing as the area of research, this paper aims to systematize the methods for the smart optimization of the heating/cooling systems in the buildings and provide an overview of the proposed solutions available in the literature (i.e., Scopus database) and highlight novel trends in smart management of the heating/cooling systems. The overview was performed with respect to the type of heating/cooling system, controlling mechanism/principle, data collection devices, and corresponding interface, as well as the location of the building in each study. Finally, the energy-saving potential of the proposed systems was tackled in the overview as well.

Footprints are one of the most common traces found at the crime scene. They can be extremely important in discovering the perpetrators, and their proper collection, documentation and analysis is crucial for the case solving. Footprints can be found on different surfaces ; smooth (e.g., floor) or more specific (e.g., mud, snow etc.). The collection of footwear trace evidence depends on the surface, and weather conditions. Sometimes it is necessary to act quickly (for example, collecting an impression in mud in rainy weather) and find the proper collection method. The most widespread technique of collecting impressions is casting but depending on the conditions, it is possible to apply other techniques. Considering the progress of technology, in this case of 3D scanning and printing, it is necessary to introduce new methods that will enable faster, safer, and more precise collection of traces, with maximum preservation of the integrity of the evidence. In this study, methods of extracting two-dimensional and three- dimensional traces are explained as well as the analysis of sole traces using conventional (casting) and non-conventional (3D scanning, photogrammetry and 3D printing by fused deposition modeling) methods with a detailed elaboration of the mentioned methods. To better understand the advantages and disadvantages of conventional and modern methods, the experiment on one footprint trace evidence was performed using casting, 3D scanning, photogrammetry, model preparation and 3D printing. The special emphasis on the duration and simplicity of each individual procedure was given.

High-performance buildings are sensitive to the occupant’s impact with respect to the energy consumption of the various building systems or individual technologies used in buildings. Thermal comfort has got an important role in the occupant’s satisfaction level, and it is directly linked with building energy performance. Development of the smart and Internet of Things (IoT) based technologies allowed the possibility for further advancements in the field of personal thermal comfort, leading towards potential energy savings in the buildings via smart and advanced control of building energy systems. In this work, the conceptual approach, as well as the results of the short-term field investigation, were presented for the case of office buildings. The wearable sensors (smart bracelets) were attached to the occupants, enabling continuous monitoring of various influential parameters on the personal thermal comfort, such as skin wrist temperature and heart rate. The environmental thermal comfort parameters were also simultaneously measured (air temperature, relative air humidity and CO2 concentration), together with conducted field survey (subjective response from occupants) to find a correlation between subjective response and experimental readings. The proposed approach allowed a more complex and precise evaluation of the personal thermal comfort where gained field data could be useful for modelling of the personal thermal comfort, as an important basis for smart regulation of the building energy systems.

One of the most important infrastructures that enable IoT-based Smart Cities is Smart Parking. This paper introduces a machine learning technique based on Hidden Markov Model that applies a Viterbi algorithm for predicting occupancy lot status based solely on collected LoRa RSSI and SNR values.

IoT became the design language for the future smart infrastructures. Therein, IoT devices are sensing the changes and delivering the data through some efficient radio, while the whole system is meant to be power efficient. In this paper, we gather state-of-the-art technology for building IoT device and analyze the power consumption of the whole system, therefore providing the useful estimate on possibilities to use it in the future infrastructures. Furtheron, specific use case is given that justifies the adoption of the device in the real environment.

The vision of smart cities has became a reality. Technological advances in low power devices and reliable communication and overall system architectures made it happening. However, there are plenty of improvements that still can be employed to further increase the efficiency of relevant systems or to provide new approaches that improve existing solutions. This special issue on Enabling Architectures and Technologies for Smart Cities of the JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE AND SYSTEMS aims to report on the recent advancements and developments in various aspects related to emerging hardware and software technologies enabling the IoT, such as RFID, WSN, system software architecture, integrated solutions, embedded systems, and so on. This issue recommended totally 10 papers for publication based on the standard reviewing process, where at least two constructive reviews and with guest editors comment have been received. Papers are split in two main groups focused mainly on system architectures that improve reliability in smart cities ([1- 5]), and hardware solutions ([6-10]) that are presented as either upgrades to exisiting solutions or new more efficient proposals. All of these were validated by analytics, simulations and/or testbed approaches.

During the popular tourist season and time of a famous music festival, from 12–14 July 2017, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FESB) hosted the SpliTech2017 conference that was technically co-sponsored by IEEE ComSoc. A total of 10 scientific sessions were held, four professional sessions, a tutorial on "Interaction of Humans with Electromagnetics Fields, " and a one-day Workshop on Internet of Things (IoT) organized with partners from industry in collaboration with the University of Salento, Italy. As part of the IoT Workshop, companies such as Amplifico, #InClude, Plurato, Ericsson Nikola Tesla, SIEMENS, STMicroelectronics, SensorID, SofThings, Selmet, and CAENRFID presented the main challenges and results they encountered on the way to implementation (and standardization) of their products. This event offered the opportunity to students and all other conference participants both to get acquainted with the newest products characterized by a high technological level and to explore very interesting opportunities for collaboration, practice and employment.

Location privacy concerns have been further increased by today’s omnipresence of WiFi technology. One such interesting source of private location data is the users Prefered Network List (PNL), as the device stores the list of previously used hotspots. Collecting such data is done by monitoring WiFi traffic, however nowadays more and more devices no longer transmit their PNL in clear, thus not allowing for an easy setup for the attacker. In this work, we will discuss the implications of revealing ones PNL obtained by passive attacks, as well as an active attack we have devised, thus circumventing the protection implemented by user equipment manufacturers.

In this talk we give a detailed desription of security flaws when using the SSL/TLS security protocol in wireless access networks, with special emphasis on the SSL/TLS problem in WPA2 Entrprise networks. Specifically, in the WPA2 Enterprise Network, such as the exmaple of eduroam network, users fail to configure network settings in a client application, where esentially the client does not verify the SSL/TLS certificate. As a result, the attacker with the fake access point can easily reveal user's credentials. Within this talk, tests have been made to confirm the configuration configuration of client applications when connecting to eduroam WiFi network. Namely, out of a total of 800 users, as many 400 have not correctly configured a client application, which as a result can have far greater implications than just stealing a username and password when attempting to join eduroam.
