The ultrafast conversion of coherent excitons into incoherent excitons, as well as the subsequent exciton diffusion and thermalization, are central topics in current scientific research due to their relevance in optoelectronics, photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Current approaches to the exciton dynamics rely on {\em model} Hamiltonians that depend on already screened electron-electron and electron-phonon couplings. In this work, we subject the state-of-the-art methods to scrutiny using the {\em ab initio} Hamiltonian for electrons and phonons. We offer a rigorous and intuitive proof demonstrating that the exciton dynamics governed by model Hamiltonians is affected by an overscreening of the electron-phonon interaction. The introduction of an auxiliary exciton species, termed the irreducible exciton, enables us to formulate a theory free from overscreening and derive the excitonic Bloch equations. These equations describe the time-evolution of coherent, irreducible, and incoherent excitons during and after the optical excitation. They are applicable beyond the linear regime, and predict that the total number of excitons is preserved when the external fields are switched off., Comment: 29 pages

In this paper, we present an exact formula for the phonon linewidths involving only dressed electron-phonon couplings and ensuring the positivity property. The formula is designed to account for both nonadiabatic and correlation effects, and it provides an alternative proof that Density Functional Perturbation Theory calculations of phonon linewidths are not affected by a double counting of screening diagrams. Furthermore, we extend the treatment to nonequilibrium scenarios and offer a rigorous justification for employing the phononic Boltzmann equation., Comment: 4 pages

We discuss many-body fermionic and bosonic systems subject to dissipative particle losses in arbitrary spatial dimensions $d$, within the Keldysh path-integral formulation of the quantum master equation. This open quantum dynamics represents a generalisation of classical reaction-diffusion dynamics to the quantum realm. We first show how initial conditions can be introduced in the Keldysh path integral via boundary terms. We then study binary annihilation reactions $A+A\to\emptyset$, for which we derive a Boltzmann-like kinetic equation. The ensuing algebraic decay in time for the particle density depends on the particle statistics. In order to model possible experimental implementations with cold atoms, for fermions in $d=1$ we further discuss inhomogeneous cases involving the presence of a trapping potential. In this context, we quantify the irreversibility of the dynamics studying the time evolution of the system entropy for different quenches of the trapping potential. The interaction of excitons with lattice vibrations underlies the scattering from bright to dark excitons as well as the coherent modulation of the exciton energy. Unlike the former mechanism, which involves phonons with finite momentum, the latter can be exclusively attributed to {\it coherent phonons} with zero momentum. We here lay down the microscopic theory of coherent phonons interacting with resonantly pumped bright excitons and provide the explicit expression of the corresponding coupling. The coupling notably resembles the exciton-phonon one, but with a crucial distinction: it contains the bare electron-phonon matrix elements rather than the screened ones. Our theory predicts that the exciton energy features a polaronic-like red-shift and monochromatic oscillations or beatings, depending on the number of coupled optical modes. Both the red-shift and the amplitude of the oscillations are proportional to the excitation density and to the square of the exciton-coherent-phonon coupling. We validate our analytical findings through comparisons with numerical simulations of time-resolved optical absorbance in resonantly pumped MoS$_{2}$ monolayers.

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 2 (EUSO-SPB2) flew on May 13$^{\text{th}}$ and 14$^{\text{th}}$ of 2023. Consisting of two novel optical telescopes, the payload utilized next-generation instrumentation for the observations of extensive air showers from near space. One instrument, the fluorescence telescope (FT) searched for Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) by recording the atmosphere below the balloon in the near-UV with a 1~$\mu$s time resolution using 108 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes with a total of 6,912 channels. Validated by pre-flight measurements during a field campaign, the energy threshold was estimated around 2~EeV with an expected event rate of approximately 1 event per 10 hours of observation. Based on the limited time afloat, the expected number of UHECR observations throughout the flight is between 0 and 2. Consistent with this expectation, no UHECR candidate events have been found. The majority of events appear to be detector artifacts that were not rejected properly due to a shortened commissioning phase. Despite the earlier-than-expected termination of the flight, data were recorded which provide insights into the detectors stability in the near-space environment as well as the diffuse ultraviolet emissivity of the atmosphere, both of which are impactful to future experiments.

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. The interaction of electrons with quantized phonons and photons underlies the ultrafast dynamics of systems ranging from molecules to solids, giving rise to a plethora of physical phenomena experimentally accessible using time-resolved techniques. Green's function methods offer an invaluable interpretation tool since scattering mechanisms of growing complexity can be selectively incorporated in the theory. cheers is a general-purpose nonequilibrium Green's function code that implements virtually all known many-body approximations and is designed for first principles studies of ultrafast processes in molecular and model solid state systems. The aims of generality, extensibility, efficiency, and user friendliness of the code are achieved through the underlying theory development and the use of modern software design practices. JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

We study the probability distribution of the first return time to the initial state of a quantum many-body system subject to stroboscopic projective measurements. We show that this distribution can be interpreted as a continuation of the canonical partition function of a spin chain with non-interacting domains at equilibrium, which is entirely characterised by the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum many-body system. This allows us to show that this probability may decay either algebraically or exponentially asymptotically in time, depending on whether the spin model displays a ferromagnetic or a paramagnetic phase. We illustrate this idea on the example of the return time of $N$ adjacent fermions in a tight-binding model, revealing a rich phase behaviour, which can be tuned by scaling the probing time with $N$. We investigate quantum reaction-diffusion systems in one-dimension with bosonic particles that coherently hop in a lattice, and when brought in range react dissipatively. Such reactions involve binary annihilation ($A + A \to \emptyset$) and coagulation ($A + A \to A$) of particles at distance $d$. We consider the reaction-limited regime, where dissipative reactions take place at a rate that is small compared to that of coherent hopping. In classical reaction-diffusion systems, this regime is correctly captured by the mean-field approximation. In quantum reaction-diffusion systems, for non-interacting fermionic systems, the reaction-limited regime recently attracted considerable attention because it has been shown to give universal power law decay beyond mean-field for the density of particles as a function of time. Here, we address the question whether such universal behavior is present also in the case of the non-interacting Bose gas. We show that beyond mean-field density decay for bosons is possible only for reactions that allow for destructive interference of different decay channels. Furthermore, we study an absorbing-state phase transition induced by the competition between branching $A\to A+A$, decay $A\to \emptyset$ and coagulation $A+A\to A$. We find a stationary phase-diagram, where a first and a second-order transition line meet at a bicritical point which is described by tricritical directed percolation. Starting from the {\em ab initio} many-body theory of electrons and phonons, we go through a series of well defined simplifications to derive a set of coupled equations of motion for the electronic occupations and polarizations, nuclear displacements as well as phononic occupations and coherences. These are the semiconductor electron-phonon equations (SEPE), sharing the same scaling with system size and propagation time as the Boltzmann equations. At the core of the SEPE is the {\em mirrored} Generalized Kadanoff-Baym ansatz (GKBA) for the Green's functions, an alternative to the standard GKBA which we show to lead to unstable equilibrium states. The SEPE treat coherent and incoherent degrees of freedom on equal footing, widen the scope of the semiconductor Bloch equations and Boltzmann equations, and reduce to them under additional simplifications. The new features of the SEPE pave the way for first-principles studies of phonon squeezed states and coherence effects in time-resolved absorption and diffraction experiments., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure

In this paper we report the detection of five strong Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) mounted on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01), operational since 2018 on a Sun-synchronous polar orbit at a $\sim$ 507 km altitude and 97$^\circ$ inclination. HEPD-01 was designed to detect high-energy electrons in the energy range 3 - 100 MeV, protons in the range 30 - 300 MeV, and light nuclei in the range 30 - 300 MeV/n. Nonetheless, Monte Carlo simulations have shown HEPD-01 is sensitive to gamma-ray photons in the energy range 300 keV - 50 MeV, even if with a moderate effective area above $\sim$ 5 MeV. A dedicated time correlation analysis between GRBs reported in literature and signals from a set of HEPD-01 trigger configuration masks has confirmed the anticipated detector sensitivity to high-energy photons. A comparison between the simultaneous time profiles of HEPD-01 electron fluxes and photons from GRB190114C, GRB190305A, GRB190928A, GRB200826B and GRB211211A has shown a remarkable similarity, in spite of the different energy ranges. The high-energy response, with peak sensitivity at about 2 MeV, and moderate effective area of the detector in the actual flight configuration explain why these five GRBs, characterised by a fluence above $\sim$ 3 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ in the energy interval 300 keV - 50 MeV, have been detected., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

EUSO-SPB2 (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon II) is a precursor mission for a future space observatory for multi-messenger astrophysics, planned to be launched in Spring 2023 with a flight duration target of 100 days. The Fluorescence Telescope (FT) hosted on board is designed to detect Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays via the UV fluorescence emission of the Extensive Air Showers in the atmosphere. The Data Processor (DP) of the FT is the component of the electronics system that performs data management and instrument control for the telescope. The DP controls front-end electronics, tags events with arrival time and payload position through a GPS system, provides signals for time synchronization of the event and measures the live and dead time of the telescope. Furthermore, it manages mass memory for data storage, performs housekeeping monitoring, and controls the power-on and power-off sequences. Finally, the data processor combines the data from the PDMs and onboard differential GPS and prioritizes data for download. The long duration of the flight poses strict requirements on electronics and data handling. The operations at high altitude in an unpressurized environment represent a technological challenge for heat dissipation. This contribution will provide an overview of the innovative elements developed and the results of the integration and field test campaigns. We will also present some preliminary analysis of the performance during the flight.

We consider the quantum reaction-diffusion dynamics in $d$ spatial dimensions of a Fermi gas subject to binary annihilation reactions $A+A \to \emptyset$. These systems display collective nonequilibrium long-time behavior, which is signalled by an algebraic decay of the particle density. Building on the Keldysh formalism, we devise a field theoretical approach for the reaction-limited regime, where annihilation reactions are scarce. By means of a perturbative expansion of the dissipative interaction, we derive a description in terms of a large-scale universal kinetic equation. Our approach shows how the time-dependent generalized Gibbs ensemble assumption, which is often employed for treating low-dimensional nonequilibrium systems, emerges from systematic diagrammatics. It also allows to exactly compute -- for arbitrary spatial dimension -- the decay exponent of the particle density. The latter is based on the large-scale description of the quantum dynamics and it differs from the mean-field prediction even in dimension larger than one. We moreover consider spatially inhomogeneous setups involving an external potential. In confined systems the density decay is accelerated towards the mean-field algebraic behavior, while for deconfined scenarios the power-law decay is replaced by a slower non-algebraic decay., Comment: 8+10 pages, 3+2 figures for main text and Supplemental Material respectively

Quantum simulations of photoexcited low-dimensional systems are pivotal for understanding how to functionalize and integrate novel two-dimensional (2D) materials in next-generation optoelectronic devices. First principles predictions are extremely challenging due to the simultaneous interplay of light-matter, electron-electron and electron-nuclear interactions. We here present an advanced ab initio many-body method which accounts for quantum coherence and non-Markovian effects while treating electrons and nuclei on equal footing, thereby preserving fundamental conservation laws like the total energy. The impact of this advancement is demonstrated through real-time simulations of the complex multivalley dynamics in a molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_{2}$) monolayer pumped above gap. Within a single framework we provide a parameter-free description of the coherent-to-incoherent crossover, elucidating the role of microscopic and collective excitations in the dephasing and thermalization processes.

We investigate the quantum reaction-diffusion dynamics of fermionic particles which coherently hop in a one-dimensional lattice and undergo annihilation reactions. The latter are modelled as dissipative processes which involve losses of pairs $2A \to \emptyset$, triplets $3A \to \emptyset$, and quadruplets $4A \to \emptyset$ of neighbouring particles. When considering classical particles, the corresponding decay of their density in time follows an asymptotic power-law behavior. The associated exponent in one dimension is different from the mean-field prediction whenever diffusive mixing is not too strong and spatial correlations are relevant. This specifically applies to $2A\to \emptyset$, while the mean-field power-law prediction just acquires a logarithmic correction for $3A \to \emptyset$ and is exact for $4A \to \emptyset$. A mean-field approach is also valid, for all the three processes, when the diffusive mixing is strong, i.e., in the so-called reaction-limited regime. Here, we show that the picture is different for quantum systems. We consider the quantum reaction-limited regime and we show that for all the three processes power-law behavior beyond mean field is present as a consequence of quantum coherences, which are not related to space dimensionality. The decay in $3A\to \emptyset$ is further, highly intricate, since the power-law behavior therein only appears within an intermediate time window, while at long times the density decay is not power-law. Our results show that emergent critical behavior in quantum dynamics has a markedly different origin, based on quantum coherences, to that applying to classical critical phenomena, which is, instead, solely determined by the relevance of spatial correlations., Comment: 17 pages: 10 pages main text, 5 pages appendices and 2 pages bibliography. 6 figures: 4 figures in main text, 2 figures in the appendices

We lay down the {\em ab initio} many-body quantum theory of electrons and phonons in- and out-of-equilibrium at any temperature. We begin by addressing a fundamental issue concerning the {\em ab initio} Hamiltonian in the harmonic approximation, which we show must be determined {\em self-consistently} to avoid inconsistencies. After identifying the most suitable partitioning into a ``noninteracting'' and an ``interacting'' part we embark on the Green's function diagrammatic analysis. We single out key diagrammatic structures to carry on the expansion in terms of dressed propagators and screened interaction. The final outcome is the finite-temperature nonequilibrium extension of the Hedin equations, featuring the appearance of the time-local Ehrenfest diagram in the electronic self-energy. The Hedin equations have limited practical utility for real-time simulations of driven systems. We leverage the versatility of diagrammatic expansion to generate a closed system of integro-differential equations for the Green's functions and nuclear displacements. These are the Kadanoff-Baym equations for electrons and phonons. Another advantage of the diagrammatic derivation is the ability to use conserving approximations, which ensure the satisfaction of all fundamental conservation laws during the time evolution. As an example we show that the adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approximation is not conserving whereas its dynamical extension is conserving provided that the electrons are treated in the Fan-Migdal approximation with a dynamically screened electron-phonon coupling. We also derive the formal solution of the Kadanoff-Baym equations in the long time limit and at the steady state. The expansion of the phononic Green's function around the quasi-phonon energies points to a possible correlation-induced splitting of the phonon dispersion in materials with no time-reversal invariance., Comment: 33 pages, 28 figures (8 of which with caption)

We present a time-linear scaling method to simulate open and correlated quantum systems out of equilibrium. The method inherits from many-body perturbation theory the possibility to choose selectively the most relevant scattering processes in the dynamics, thereby paving the way to the real-time characterization of correlated ultrafast phenomena in quantum transport. The open system dynamics is described in terms of an embedding correlator from which the time-dependent current can be calculated using the Meir-Wingreen formula. We show how to efficiently implement our approach through a simple grafting into recently proposed time-linear Green's function methods for closed systems. At large scales of space and time, the nonequilibrium dynamics of local observables in extensive many-body systems is well described by hydrodynamics. At the Euler scale, one assumes that each mesoscopic region independently reaches a state of maximal entropy under the constraints given by the available conservation laws. Away from phase transitions, maximal entropy states show exponential correlation decay, and independence of fluid cells might be assumed to subsist during the course of time evolution. We show that this picture is incorrect: under ballistic scaling, regions separated by macroscopic distances develop long-range correlations as time passes. These correlations take a universal form that only depends on the Euler hydrodynamics of the model. They are rooted in the large-scale motion of interacting fluid modes, and are the dominant long-range correlations developing in time from long-wavelength, entropy-maximised states. They require the presence of interaction and at least two different fluid modes, and are of a fundamentally different nature from well-known long-range correlations occurring from diffusive spreading or from quasi-particle excitations produced in far-from-equilibrium quenches. We provide a universal theoretical framework to exactly evaluate them, an adaptation of the macroscopic fluctuation theory to the Euler scale. We verify our exact predictions in the hard-rod gas, by comparing with numerical simulations and finding excellent agreement., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We consider the quantum nonequilibrium dynamics of systems where fermionic particles coherently hop on a one-dimensional lattice and are subject to dissipative processes analogous to those of classical reaction-diffusion models. Particles can either annihilate in pairs, $A+A \to \emptyset$, coagulate upon contact, $A+A \to A$, and possibly also branch, $A \to A+A$. In classical settings, the interplay between these processes and particle diffusion leads to critical dynamics as well as to absorbing-state phase transitions. Here, we analyze the impact of coherent hopping and of quantum superposition, focusing on the so-called reaction-limited regime. Here, spatial density fluctuations are quickly smoothed out due to fast hopping, which for classical systems is described by a mean-field approach. By exploiting the time-dependent generalized Gibbs ensemble method, we demonstrate that quantum coherence and destructive interference play a crucial role in these systems and are responsible for the emergence of locally protected dark states and collective behavior beyond mean-field. This can manifest both at stationarity and during the relaxation dynamics. We introduce a new universal framework describing fluctuations and correlations in quantum and classical many-body systems, at the Euler hydrodynamic scale of space and time. The framework adapts the ideas of the conventional macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) to systems that support ballistic transport. The resulting "ballistic MFT" (BMFT) is solely based on the Euler hydrodynamics data of the many-body system. Within this framework, mesoscopic observables are classical random variables depending only on the fluctuating conserved densities, and Euler-scale fluctuations are obtained by deterministically transporting thermodynamic fluctuations via the Euler hydrodynamics. Using the BMFT, we show that long-range correlations in space generically develop over time from long-wavelength inhomogeneous initial states in interacting models. This result, which we verify by numerical calculations, challenges the long-held paradigm that at the Euler scale, fluid cells may be considered uncorrelated. We also show that the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem for non-equilibrium ballistic transport follows purely from time-reversal invariance of the Euler hydrodynamics. We introduce and investigate an open many-body quantum system in which kinetically constrained coherent and dissipative processes compete. The form of the incoherent dissipative dynamics is inspired by that of epidemic spreading or cellular-automaton-based computation related to the density-classification problem. It features two non-fluctuating absorbing states as well as a $\mathcal{Z}_2$-symmetric point in parameter space. The coherent evolution is governed by a kinetically constrained $\mathcal{Z}_2$-symmetric many-body Hamiltonian which is related to the quantum XOR-Fredrickson-Andersen model. We show that the quantum coherent dynamics can stabilize a fluctuating state and we characterize the transition between this active phase and the absorbing states. We also identify a rather peculiar behavior at the $\mathcal{Z}_2$-symmetric point. Here the system approaches the absorbing-state manifold with a dynamics that follows a power-law whose exponent continuously varies with the relative strength of the coherent dynamics. Our work shows how the interplay between coherent and dissipative processes as well as symmetry constraints may lead to a highly intricate non-equilibrium evolution and may stabilize phases that are absent in related classical problems., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We augment the time-linear formulation of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for systems of interacting electrons and quantized phonons or photons with the $G\widetilde{W}$ approximation, the Coulomb interaction $\widetilde{W}$ being dynamically screened by both electron-hole pairs {\em and} bosonic particles. We also show how to combine different approximations to include simultaneously multiple correlation effects in the dynamics. The final outcome is a versatile framework comprising $2^{12}$ distinct diagrammatic methods, each scaling linearly in time and preserving all fundamental conservation laws. The dramatic improvement over current state-of-the-art approximations brought about by $G\widetilde{W}$ is demonstrated in a study of the correlation-induced charge migration of the glycine molecule in an optical cavity., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We investigate the dynamics of a non-interacting spin system, undergoing coherent Rabi oscillations, in the presence of stochastic resetting. We show that resetting generally induces long-range quantum and classical correlations both in the emergent dissipative dynamics and in the non-equilibrium stationary state. Moreover, for the case of conditional reset protocols -- where the system is reinitialized to a state dependent on the outcome of a preceding measurement -- we show that, in the thermodynamic limit, the spin system can feature collective behavior which results in a phenomenology reminiscent of that occurring in non-equilibrium phase transitions. The discussed reset protocols can be implemented on quantum simulators and quantum devices that permit fast measurement and readout of macroscopic observables, such as the magnetisation. Our approach does not require the control of coherent interactions and may therefore highlight a route towards a simple and robust creation of quantum correlations and collective non-equilibrium states, with potential applications in quantum enhanced metrology and sensing., Comment: 6+6 pages, 3 figures

We implemented a didactic experiment to study the angular correlation between the two gamma rays emitted in typical $^{60}$Co radioactive decays. We used two NaI(Tl) scintillators, already available in our laboratory, and a low-activity $^{60}$Co source. The detectors were mounted on two rails, with the source at their center. The first rail was fixed, while the second could be rotated around the source. We performed several measurements by changing the angle between the two scintillators in the range from $90^\circ$ to $180^\circ$. Dedicated background runs were also performed, removing the source from the experimental setup. We found that the signal rate increases with the angular separation between the two scintillators, with small discrepancies from the theoretical expectations., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures
