Introduction and research question Trust in the provision of nursing home services is crucial for their sustainability and well-functioning. Previous studies have investigated the effect of transparency as a way to increase trustworthiness in governments (Grimmelikhuijsen et al, 2013; Porombescu and Grimmelikhuijsen, 2018), in regulatory agencies (Grimmelikhuijsen et al, 2021) and policies (De Fine Lich et al, 2014). Although previous studies have provided important insights on the effect of transparency in the levels of trust at the organizational level, the analysis of core social policies has received scarce attention. Which model of service provision do beneficiaries prefer, and how would the adoption of specific mechanisms for their accountability and transparency affect trust in the services? Our study seeks to empirically test the thesis that if service providers are more transparent and accountable about the services, their beneficiaries will trust them more. But we also argue that different arrangements of transparency and accountability could affect –to a greater or lesser extent– the levels of trust in the services. The research questions addressed are the following: Does transparency and accountability in nursing home services influence service beneficiaries’ trust? How do core characteristics of nursing homes and accountability tools impact the level of trust that beneficiaries have on such services? To answer these questions, we will conduct a conjoint survey experiment in which relatives of nursing home services in Spain will be asked to rate and rank different hypothetical profiles of nursing home models that randomly vary on six core dimensions of the services –specifically, on aspects regarding their transparency and accountability.
