The Radboud University Nijmegen has started an investment program for a free-electron laser radiation source and a 45 T hybrid magnet system to increase the capabilities of its High Field Magnet Laboratory. Abstract

A study was conducted on powder-in-tube Pb1-xSnxMo6S8 Chevrel wires' overall critical current density at high magnetic field of up to 24 tesla. An overall critical current density slightly over 100 A/mm2 at 20 tesla and 63 A/mm2 at 24 tesla were observed at 1.9 K. An abrupt occurrence of the resistive state was seen below 18 tesla, suggesting that the region has local defects.

Abstract

The critical current density, current distribution and ac susceptibility of hot isostatically pressed (HIP) PbMo6S8 wires with a molybdenum barrier were measured. The measurements were carried out to examine the degradation mechanisms that limit the critical current densities of PbMo3S8 conductors to around 200 MA/m2 at 20 T and 4.2 K. The results demonstrated improved critical current density with higher HIP temperature.

The specifications and performance of the new 50 mm bore, 30 T resistive magnet, which is commissioned at the Nijmegen High Field Magnet Laboratory, are described. The two innermost Florida-type Bitter coils will be used in the 30 T, 10 MW hybrid magnet, which is expected to be completed in 2008.

Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze the resistivity of La(sub 0.67)Ca(sub 0.33)MnO(sub 3) films from the Curie temperature to 600 K in magnetic fields up to 20 T. The diagonal transport was characterized by hopping of a small spin polaron clsuter of 4 ions to nearest-neighbor spins. Experimental results indicated that the electron-like low field Hall coefficient supported a thermally activated behavior with an activation energy higher than that determined from diagonal data.

Abstract

The standard model of rare-earth magnetism assumes that magnetic anisotropy is mainly caused by single-ion effects. The importance of two-ion anisotropy is still disputed. For a number of materials this two-ion anisotropy is in the same order of magnitude and strongly influences the magnetic properties. Single crystalline Tb5Ge3 has a high moment and low symmetry and, because of this, a large anisotropy is expected. In the present study the influence of the two-ion interaction was investigated. Magnetization and magnetostriction were measured in high magnetic fields up to 60 T. The magnetic phase diagram constructed for the main crystallographic directions shows antiferromagnetism in zero field and a number of magnetic phases at higher fields. The exchange interaction was evaluated based on a model calculation of these phase diagrams. We conclude that a huge anisotropy in the two-ion interaction is present, which overwhelms the single-ion effects.

(EDT-TTF)(4)Hg3-deltaI8, delta similar to 0.1-0.2, with T-c = 8.1 K has been synthesized. Transport and magnetic properties have been investigated. Upper critical fields have been studied under parallel and perpendicular magnetic fields up to 17 T in the temperature region down to 1.3 K. The data show that upper critical fields are within the paramagnetic limit in all directions. The coherence lengths indicate that (EDT-TTT)(4)Hg3-deltaI8, delta similar to 0.1-0.2, is a quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
