Abstract

Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar as espécies de parasitoides associados com moscas coletadas em vísceras de galinha, em Itumbiara, Goiás. Armadilhas contendo vísceras de galinha como isca foram utilizadas para atrair a moscas. As pupas, obtidas pelo método de flutuação, foram colocadas individualmente em cápsulas de gelatina (nmasculine 00) e mantidas em laboratório até a emergência das moscas e/ou dos parasitoides. A prevalência total de parasitismo foi de 20,0%. Brachymeria podagrica, Hemencyrtus sp. (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), Nasonia vitripennis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Paraganaspis egeria (Díaz, Gallardo & Wash) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), apresentaram prevalência de parasitismo de 8,9%, 10,8%, 0,9% e 0,3%, respectivamente.

Abstract

This work aimed to study the prevalence of parasitism of the parasitoid Brachymeria podagrica in Itumbiara, Goiás, using five different substrata: cattle kidneys, human feces, viscera of chicken, fish and cattle liver. The pupae were obtained by the flotation method. They were individually placed in gelatin capsules until the emergency of the adult flies or their parasitoids. The prevalence of parasitism was of 13.8%.

Este trabalho relata a primeira ocorrência do parasitóide Brachymeria podagrica (Fabricius, 1787) parasitando estádios imaturos de Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) no Brasil. Utilizaram-se armadilhas contendo como isca vísceras de galinha. As pupas foram obtidas pelo método de flutuação. Elas foram colocadas individualmente em cápsulas de gelatina e mantidas até a emergência das moscas e/ou dos parasitóides. Foram obtidas 29 pupas de C. albiceps, quatro das quais emergiram parasitóides. A prevalência de parasitismo foi de 13,7%.

Abstract

This paper presents the hardware and software approach to replacing the current analogue linear feedback system on the TCV Tokamak with a DSP based system to allow for non-linear control. After preliminary combination, over 120 control signals are reduced to 32 parameters which enter an array of 32 DSP processors each of which is passed the complete parameter set. Apart from data transfer and storage, each DSP will run its separate control algorithm with a repetition rate up to 20 kHz. A separate DSP board is dedicated to the plasma vertical control which requires a 200 kHz feedback rate. This paper presents the hardware and the software that is being designed to put this control block in the hands of non DSP-expert physics users. Abstract

Introduction: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a significant gastrointestinal disease in the developed world and increasingly recognised as a zoonotic infection. In North America and Europe, the PCR ribotype (RT) 078 strain of C. difficile is commonly found in production animals and as a cause of disease in humans although proof of transmission from animals is lacking. This strain is absent in Australian livestock. We report a case of human CDI caused by a strain of C. difficile belonging to known Australian livestock-associated RT 237. Case presentation: A young male was admitted for multiple trauma following a motor vehicle accident and placed on piperacillin/tazobactam for pneumonia. After 4 days of treatment, he developed symptoms of CDI, which was confirmed in the laboratory. His symptoms resolved after 6 days of intravenous metronidazole. The strain of C. difficile isolated was identified as RT 237, an unusual RT previously found in with several Western Australia piggeries. Conclusion: This case of CDI caused by an unusual livestock-associated C. difficile RT 237 supports the hypothesis of zoonotic transmission. The case highlights the potential of livestock to act as reservoir for C. difficile and the need for continued surveillance of CDI in both human and animal populations.

A influência da atividade física escolar no desenvolvimento da função executiva infantil ainda não é consenso entre os estudos já realizados, portanto esse estudo tem como objetivo verificar o efeito da estimulação motora, nas respostas da função cognitiva de crianças na faixa etária de 6 a 10 anos, de escolas públicas do Distrito Federal, Brasil. Foram formados 2 grupos controle (n = 40) e experimental (n = 40), avaliados antes e depois da intervenção, as variáveis analisadas: motricidade, função executiva, tempo de reação e atenção seletiva. A intervenção ocorreu durante 7 meses com aulas de educação física escolar. Os resultados demonstraram que ocorreu uma diferença significativa entre os grupos nos testes de função executiva [F(1, 118) = 13.768; p = .001], tempo de reação [F(1, 118)= 18.352; p = .001] e atenção seletiva [F(1, 64)= 14.531; p = .001]. Desse modo, foi observado que, o grupo que sofreu intervenção melhorou não somente o aspecto motor, mas também melhorou de forma significativa o desempenho das funções cognitivas testadas. The influence of physical activity in children’s development of executive function is not yet consensus among previous studies. So this study aims to evaluate the effects of school based motor stimulation in cognitive function responses in children aged 6 to 10 years of public schools at Brasília-Federal District, Brazil. It was formed two groups control (n = 40) and experimental (n = 40) who were studied before and after the intervention. The variable analyzed was: motor skills, executive function, reaction time and selective attention. The intervention occurred during 7 months, two times week, in a 50 minutes physical education classes. The results showed that there was a significant difference between groups in tests of executive function [F (1, 118) = 13.768, p = .001], reaction time [F (1, 118) = 18.352, p = .001] and attention selective [F (1, 64) = 14.531, p = .001]. Thus, it was observed that the experimental group improved not only its motor performance, but also significantly improved the performance of cognitive functions tested.

Abstract

The centipedes of the clade Epimorpha change slightly during post-embryonic growth but there is huge variation between species in the maximum body size. New specimens of the rarely collected Neotropical genus Dinogeophilus provide further evidence that this genus comprises the smallest species of the Epimorpha, with a recorded maximum length of 5.5 mm. Up to now Dinogeophilus has been invariantly classified in Geophilidae but different sources of evidence (examination by SEM, cladistic evaluation of morphology, similarity and phylogenetic analysis of molecular data) agree on a very different phylogenetic hypothesis: Dinogeophilus is actually a derived lineage of Schendylidae, only distantly related to Geophilidae, and possibly belong to a mainly Neotropical subgroup of schendylids. A comparison of Dinogeophilus with the most closely related taxa suggests that body miniaturization was accompanied by possibly paedomorphic traits, including lower number of some multiple elements (antennal sensilla, processes on the mouth-parts, coxal organ

Abstract

This paper reports the occurrence of parasitoids in pupae of flies (Diptera) collected from several different substrata in Itumbiara, Goiás, Brazil. The pupae were isolated by flotation. They were individually placed into gelatin capsules and kept until the emergency of adult flies or their parasitoids. From March 2001 through April 2002, a total of 684 parasitoids and 830 pupae of flies were collected from humans feces, chicken viscera, fish, and bovine kidney. Brachymeria podagrica were identified in a high number of samples. The prevalence of parasitism was of 82.4%.

Abstract

The Auditing Instrument for Sustainability in Higher Education (AISHE) is an assessment instrument developed specifically for higher education. The AISHE had been applied in many institutions in its first version (AISHE 1.0) and has a new version the AISHE 2.0, with new elements for evaluation (ROORDA, 2008). This paper shows the results of AISHE 1.0 application at Passo Fundo (UPF) university, located in the south of Brazil. The objective is to evaluate sustainability on the graduate courses. The AISHE method is based on the PDCA circle (PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT). Within the first three categories are criteria available in accordance with the five stages (sustainability level): stage 1: activity; stage 2: process; stage 3: system; stage 4: chain; stage 5: society (AISHE, 2001). The results show significant differences between the courses, indicating lack of strategic vision and university management, which is a common feature in all courses. The ideal would be that the results achieved stage 5, ‘society’, which means: long-term strategy, the policy aims at constant improvement; contacts are maintained, not only with direct customers but also with other stakeholders. The organization fulfils a prominent role in society. The sustainability evaluation is important because it points out the weaknesses and strengths of each course

Abstract

Higher Education Institutions (HEI) play an important role in sustainable development with their education, research and developed extension activities on environmental practices. With the purpose of organizing an event focused on the argument for education for sustainable development within Latin America and to initiate a process of coordination of the regional proposals, the First Latin America Meeting of Sustainable Universities (ELAUS) took place in October, 2008. This objective of this article is to relate and systemize the results of ELAUS, aggregated at the University of Passo Fundo, Brazil, with the support of the National University of Cordoba, Argentina and the University of São Paulo, Brazil and with collaboration from the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain. The data was obtained from the analysis of the reports, workshops and sessions that formed part of the event schedule and proceedings. The results show that the initiatives are expanding and increasing irreversibly. However, the majority of them are still isolated far from a systemic ideal. In conclusion, some possibilities and challenges have been indicated; among them, the necessity of having a systemic vision involving all the people and the activities of the university. The necessity of having a space for the discussion on sustainability in the universities of Latin America guaranteed the success of ELAUS. This event will be continued every two years in other countries.
