Climate change is being intensified by anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gasses, highlighting the value of forests for carbon dioxide storing carbon in their biomass. Seasonally dry tropical forests are a neglected, threatened, but potentially critical biome for helping mitigate climate change. In South America, knowing the amount and distribution of carbon in Caatinga seasonally dry vegetation is essential to understand its contribution to the global carbon cycle and subsequently design a strategic plan for its conservation. The present study aimed to model and map the spatial distribution of the potential forest biomass stock across 32 forest fragments of Caatinga, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, using regression kriging and Inverse Square of Distance techniques, building from point measurements of vegetation biomass made on-the-ground in ecological plots. First, a model for estimating biomass was fitted as a function of environmental variables to apply regression kriging, and then applied to the maps of the selected components. Elevation, temperature, and precipitation explained 46% of the biomass variations in the Caatinga. The model residuals showed strong spatial dependence and were mapped based on geostatistical criteria, selecting the spherical semivariogram model for interpolation by ordinary kriging. Biomass was also mapped by the Inverse Square of Distance approach. The quality of the regression model suggests that there is good potential for estimating biomass here from environmental variables. The regression kriging showed greater detail in the spatial distribution and revealed a spatial trend of increasing biomass from the north to south of the domain. Additional studies with greater sampling intensity and the use of other explanatory variables are suggested to improve the model, as well as to maximize the technique’s ability to capture the actual biomass behavior in this newly studied seasonally dry ecosystem.

The balance between pro-coagulant factors and natural coagulation inhibitors in critically ill patients with Covid-19 is fundamental to the prevention and treatment of complications. The aim of the present study was to investigate the pulmonary injury patterns in Covid-19 having higher mortality in the presence of deep vein thrombosis in comparison to patients without venous thrombosis and determine the Gamma variant.Methods: A retrospective study was conducted involving the evaluation of 200 medical records of patients with Covid-19 and a clinical suspicion of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) at the intensive care unit of a public hospital. The sample was divided into two groups of patients were formed – those positive and those negative for DVT. Statistical analysis involved the use of Fisher’s exact test, the paired t-test and chi-square test.Results: Patients with DVT had more severe lung injuries (greater than 70%) compared to those without DVT (p = 0.003). Lesions affecting 50% to 70% of the lung area occurred in little more half of the group with DVT and just under half in the group without DVT (p = 0.5). Pulmonary lesions affecting less than 50% of the lung occurred more in patients without DVT (p = 0.0001). The Gamma variant increased prevalence of the both DVT and mortality (p=0.0001).Conclusion: Deep vein thrombosis is an aggravating factor of mortality in patients with SARS-CoV-2, and the Gamma variant is an aggravating factor of both thrombotic events and mortality.Keywords: Covid-19, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary thrombosis, mortality

Background: Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive clinical condition that evolves with intense fibrosis, the most advanced stage of which is stage III (lymphostatic fibrosclerosis).Aim: The aim of the present study was to show the possibility to reconstruct the dermal layers with the intensive treatment of fibrosis using the Godoy method.Case description: A 55-year-old patient with an eight-year history of edema of the lower limb of the leg had constant episodes of erysipelas, despite regular treatments. The edema progressed continually, associated with a change in the color of the skin and the formation of a crust. Intensive treatment (eight hours per day for three weeks) was proposed with the Godoy method. The ultrasound was performed and results revealed substantial improvement in the skin, with the onset of the reconstruction of the dermal layers.Conclusion: It is possible to reconstruct the layers of the skin in fibrotic conditions caused by lymphedema.

ImportanceBefore surgery, the best strategy for managing patients who are taking renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASIs) (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers) is unknown. The lack of evidence leads to conflicting guidelines.ObjectiveTo evaluate whether a continuation strategy vs a discontinuation strategy of RASIs before major noncardiac surgery results in decreased complications at 28 days after surgery.Design, setting, and participantsRandomized clinical trial that included patients who were being treated with a RASI for at least 3 months and were scheduled to undergo a major noncardiac surgery between January 2018 and April 2023 at 40 hospitals in France.InterventionPatients were randomized to continue use of RASIs (n = 1107) until the day of surgery or to discontinue use of RASIs 48 hours prior to surgery (ie, they would take the last dose 3 days before surgery) (n = 1115).Main outcomes and measuresThe primary outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality and major postoperative complications within 28 days after surgery. The key secondary outcomes were episodes of hypotension during surgery, acute kidney injury, postoperative organ failure, and length of stay in the hospital and intensive care unit during the 28 days after surgery.ResultsOf the 2222 patients (mean age, 67 years [SD, 10 years]; 65% were male), 46% were being treated with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors at baseline and 54% were being treated with angiotensin receptor blockers. The rate of all-cause mortality and major postoperative complications was 22% (245 of 1115 patients) in the RASI discontinuation group and 22% (247 of 1107 patients) in the RASI continuation group (risk ratio, 1.02 [95% CI, 0.87-1.19]; P = .85). Episodes of hypotension during surgery occurred in 41% of the patients in the RASI discontinuation group and in 54% of the patients in the RASI continuation group (risk ratio, 1.31 [95% CI, 1.19-1.44]). There were no other differences in the trial outcomes.Conclusions and relevanceAmong patients who underwent major noncardiac surgery, a continuation strategy of RASIs before surgery was not associated with a higher rate of postoperative complications than a discontinuation strategy.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03374449.

Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the use of multi-frequency, multi-segment bioimpedance for the diagnosis and therapeutic follow-up of clinical stages II and III lymphedema of the lower limbs. Methods and Results: A diagnostic clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of multi-frequency, multi-segment bioimpedance compared to volumetry for diagnosing and therapeutically following up clinical stages II and III lymphedema of the lower limbs. Treatment comprised the intensive Godoy Method® (eight hours per day for five days). One hundred limbs from 50 patients were evaluated, with 64 true-positive diagnoses, two false positives, three false negatives, and 31 true negatives, resulting in a sensitivity of 95.52% and specificity of 93.94%. Conclusion: Multi-frequency and multi-segment bioimpedance analysis is effective in the diagnosis and therapeutic follow-up of clinical stages II and III lymphedema of the lower limbs, achieving similar results to those obtained using water displacement volumetry.

Abstract Air pollution poses a significant global concern, notably impacting pregnancy outcomes through mechanisms such as DNA damage, oxidative stress, inflammation, and altered miRNA expression, all of which can adversely affect trophoblast functions. Cleistocalyx nervosum var. paniala, known for its abundance of anthocyanins with diverse biological activities including anti-mutagenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, is the focus of this study examining its effect on Particulate Matter 10 (PM10) soluble extract-induced trophoblast cell dysfunction via miRNA expression. The study involved the extraction of C. nervosum fruit using 70% ethanol, followed by fractionation with hexane, dichloromethane, and ethyl acetate. Subsequent testing for total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity revealed the ethyl acetate fraction (CN-EtOAcF) as possessing the highest phenolic and anthocyanin content along with potent antioxidant activity, prompting its selection for further investigation. In vitro studies on HTR-8/SVneo cells demonstrated that 5–10 µg/mL PM10 soluble extract exposure inhibited cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and induced apoptosis. However, pretreatment with 20–80 µg/mL CN-EtOAcF followed by 5 µg/mL PM10 soluble extract exposure exhibited protective effects against PM10 soluble extract-induced damage, including inflammation inhibition and intracellular ROS suppression. Notably, CN-EtOAcF down-regulated PM10-induced miR-146a-5p expression, with SOX5 identified as a potential target. Overall, CN-EtOAcF demonstrated the potential to protect against PM10-induced harm in trophoblast cells, suggesting its possible application in future therapeutic approaches.

One of the main themes of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity is Digital Sequence Information (DSI): genomic or related data deposited in publicly accessible databases in a digital language. These sequences are important for research in areas such as biodiversity conservation and bioprospecting. Some characteristics of organisms that stimulate the commercial use of biodiversity may have been developed by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, and therefore, they have associated traditional knowledge. We present proposals of the Brazilian Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities on this topic.

In favor of better cultures development and productivity, new studies are seeking different alternatives, efficient technologies, and lower environmental impact to achieve such purposes, thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the application effect of a chitosan-based product in the germination and vigor of corn. The study was carried out at the Ceará State University, Campus Itaperi. A completely randomized design was adopted with four replications of 50 seeds, except for the mass, length tests and image analysis carried out in five replications of 20 seeds. Seeds of the cultivar SM 996 were used and submitted to six concentrations of chitosan-based product: 0.0% (control); 0.5%; 1%; 2.5%; 5%; and 10%. It evaluated the following parameters: first count, germination test, radicle, shoot and seedling length and fresh mass, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, electrolyte extravasation, image computerized analysis by Vigor-S®, emergence, and length, fresh and dry mass of the seedlings in a bed. The use of coating with the bioproduct in corn seeds significantly increased the germination test results, the shoots’ first count emerged in a bed, as well as, root and seedlings fresh mass, fresh and dry mass in the field, length of the seedlings in the field, seedlings total length and growth index obtained by the Vigor-S®. It is concluded that the bioproduct presents as an essential bio-stimulant for corn seeds favoring germination parameters, vigor, and development of the seedlings.

Abstract Background The EAT-Lancet diet is a diet aimed at promoting population and planetary health from the perspective of sustainable diets in terms of environmental and health aspects. This study aimed to assess the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and cardiometabolic risk factors among adults and elderly individuals in a capital city in the northeastern region of Brazil. Methods This is an analytical cross-sectional observational study from a population-based sample conducted between 2019 and 2020, involving 398 non-institutionalized adults and elderly people, of both sexes from “Brazilian Usual Consumption Assessment” study (Brazuca-Natal). There was a 38% response rate due to the suspension of data collection due to the covid-19 pandemic, but According to the comparative analysis of socioeconomic and demographic variables between the surveyed and non-surveyed sectors, losses were found to be random (p = 0.135, Little’s MCAR test). Socioeconomic and lifestyle data, anthropometric measurements, and dietary consumption were collected. We used the Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) and the Cardiovascular Health Diet Index (CHDI) for cardiovascular health to assess adherence to the diet’s sustainability. The evaluated cardiometabolic parameters included fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements. We also assessed the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, and dyslipidemia. For the data analyses, sample weights and the effect of the study design were taken into account. Pearson’s chi-square test was used to evaluate the statistical significance of frequencies. Multiple linear regression models assessed the associations between PHDI and CHDI and its components and the cardiometabolic parameters. Results The mean PHDI was 29.4 (95% CI 28.04:30.81), on a total score ranging from 0 to 150 points and the mean CHDI was 32.63 (95% CI 31.50:33.78), on a total score ranging from 0 to 110 points. Introduction: Brazil is one of the countries with the largest population of people with hemophilia (PwH) worldwide. In this scoping review, we aim to investigate the Brazilian context for hemophilia regarding three predefined concepts: (i) clinical-epidemiological profile, (ii) burden of disease and (iii) patient journey and unmet needs. Methods: Three questions in each concept guided the screening of references retrieved by systematic searches carried out in MEDLINE, LILACS and the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. Quantitative and qualitative studies conducted in Brazil from 2002 onwards were assessed for eligibility. Main results: Ninety-two studies were included. A total of 66 studies addressed the concept “Clinical-epidemiological profile”, 31 investigated the concept of “Burden of disease” and 26 addressed the concept “Patient journey and unmet needs”. Based on these studies, pain and arthropathy affect a substantial proportion of the PwH, with physical functioning, pain and school or work being the domains of quality of life with the greatest impact. About 43 % to 82.6 % of the PwH are unemployed. Rates of inhibitor development are highly variable across studies, especially in hemophilia A. Adherence to prophylactic treatment ranges from 25 % to 72 %. The annualized bleeding rate is estimated at 2.4 ± 4.1. The barriers to treatment identified include distance to reference centers, lack of coordination of specialized and emergency care and restricted access to rehabilitation. Conclusions: Hemophilia poses a considerable burden on the PwH. Despite the available modalities of treatment, there are remaining unmet needs that should be addressed by researchers and policy makers in the future.

This study aimed to evaluate the emergence, early growth, and anatomy of Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi cultivated in iron mining tailings. The seeds were obtained from trees used in urban afforestation and cultivated on two substrates: sand and iron mining tailings. The chemical composition of the mining tailing was characterized. The experiment was conducted in a growth room for 60 days. The emergence rate, seedling survival, height, number of leaves, chlorophyll content, and leaf and root anatomy were evaluated. The analysis of the composition of the mining tailings indicated that macro- and micronutrients were present, as well as potentially toxic elements such as Al, Cd, Cr, and Pb. The mining tailings reduced the emergence rate, and 25% of the seedlings died in this substrate. In addition, the mining tailings promoted a significant reduction in all parameters investigated, including seedling height, number of leaves, chlorophyll content, total leaf thickness, abaxial and adaxial epidermis thickness, palisade parenchyma thickness, and the length and width of the seeds. Additionally, the chloroplasts, the metaxylem vessel diameter, and the phloem proportion were evaluated. Interestingly, the tailings promoted an increase in the secretory channel. In the roots, no significant changes were observed in the parameters analyzed. Thus, the seeds of S. terebinthifolia germinated in the iron mining tailings, and 75% of the seedlings survived, showing their potential for reforestation. Nonetheless, iron mining tailings exhibited toxicity to S. terebinthifolia seedlings, reducing their photosynthetic tissues and, consequently, their growth; this toxicity is likely related to potentially toxic elements present in tailings.

Em meio a uma sociedade cada vez mais rápida e efêmera, a inserção da leitura de clássicos da literatura entre os jovens é desafiadora, porém é um estímulo para o desenvolvimento de cidadãos críticos. Assim, considera-se a literatura como aliada ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem por promover o desenvolvimento cognitivo e social. Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar os aspectos científicos implícitos na obra de Rachel de Queiroz, O Quinze, para utilizá-la na educação em ciências no Ensino Médio, com vistas à alfabetização científica. Para tal, foi analisado se o livro possuía conteúdos científicos de acordo com as três esferas do conhecimento científico sistematizado, por meio da análise de conteúdo da obra. Na esfera conceitual-fenomenológica, foram identificados temas pertencentes às categorias saúde, meio ambiente e bioquímica. A esfera histórico-metodológica permite uma discussão epistemológica. Por fim, a esfera sociopolítica exibiu temas relacionados à Ciência e Sociedade. Conclui-se que a obra apresenta um extenso potencial para a educação científica.

The concrete industry is a significant consumer of drinking water and natural aggregates, such as sand and gravel. However, the scarcity of water and aggregate resources and the challenges associated with the disposal of construction and demolition waste prompted the exploration of alternative materials. This study investigates the feasibility of incorporating secondary treated wastewater from UASB reactors followed by trickling filters and mixed recycled aggregates as potential alternatives. To assess the viability of these alternatives, the study considered the replacement of 100% potable water with treated wastewater, as well as varying proportions of recycled gravel (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%) and recycled sand (10, 20, 30, 40, and 100%). Physical and mechanical properties were negatively affected, but it was possible to reach compressive results over 40 MPa and splitting tensile strength over 4 MPa for almost all mixes. Regarding physical properties, the use of alternative materials caused poorer outcomes for density, water absorption, and air-void ratio. The limited magnitude of these detrimental effects indicates the potential of manufacturing concrete with the addition of combined treated wastewater and recycled aggregate as a viable strategy while enhancing reuse practices. HIGHLIGHTS It is possible to obtain concrete with acceptable properties using mixed recycled aggregates and treated wastewater.; A minimum detrimental effect was observed over concrete's fresh properties.; Reduction in concrete's physical properties is not statistically significant.; The mechanical properties were negatively affected with the increase in fine and coarse mixed recycled aggregates.; Small amounts of recycled aggregates do not cause noticeable losses in concrete's performance.;

Abstract Neoadjuvant pembrolizumab plus chemotherapy (P + CT) has emerged as a standard of care for stage II-III triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, the best anthracycline-cyclophosphamide (AC) schedule remains to be determined. While the KEYNOTE-522 regimen employs AC every 3 weeks (q3w AC), previous studies have shown overall survival benefits of dose-dense regimens for early-stage breast cancer. The Neo-Real study (GBECAM-0123) is a real-world data effort evaluating patients with TNBC treated with neoadjuvant P + CT in ten cancer centers since July 2020. The objective of this analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of dose-dense AC (ddAC) versus q3w AC. Among 333 patients included until November 2023, 311 completed neoadjuvant therapy and 279 underwent surgery with pathology reports available; ddAC was used in 58.2% and q3w AC in 41.8% of the cases. Most patients (69.1%) had stage II TNBC. A pCR was observed in 65.4% with ddAC and 58.7% with q3w AC (P = 0.260), while RCB 0-1 occurred in 82.4% and 73.5%, respectively (P = 0.115). Patients with stage III disease had a numerically higher pCR with ddAC (59% vs 40%, P = 0.155), while pCR rates were similar regardless of AC regimen in stage II disease (66.6% vs 64.5%; P = 0.760). While no significant disparities in drug discontinuation was noted, ddAC showed a trend towards higher rates of grade ≥3 AE (40.5% vs. 30.7%, P = 0.092). The Neo-Real study could not rule out a difference between ddAC and q3w AC during neoadjuvant P + CT. The observation of a potentially higher pCR with ddAC in stage III disease warrants further investigation.

Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) has proposed to monitor intrinsic capacity (IC) in the older population as a public health strategy through the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) program. Although the program has been developed based on solid concepts, scientific evidence on its practical applicability is still scarce. Objectives: To evaluate IC in Brazilian older adults, its progress over time, and its association with sociodemographic and health factors and outcomes. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the WHO/ICOPE screening tool. Methods: This is a prospective multicenter cohort study with a 36-month follow-up. We will recruit 3838 people aged ≥ 60 years, registered in the health care units included in the study by the participating centers. We will collect sociodemographic and health data and will administer tools to assess IC domains, both those provided for in the ICOPE screening tool and the sequence of confirmatory assessments provided for in the program. Participants will be reassessed every 6 months for 36 months. Expected results: To establish the profile of IC in the study population and to understand its progress and the variables associated with the clinical outcomes of interest. To reveal the diagnostic and psychometric properties of the WHO/ICOPE screening tool. The project is funded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Relevance: Understanding the potential use of the ICOPE public health strategy proposed by the WHO within the scope of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) by integrating several research centers in the field of Geriatrics and Gerontology throughout Brazil.

Abstract Introduction Professionalism is fundamental to the existence of professions. In pharmacy, interest in this theme improved with events that examined the resocialization of pharmacists in care. With this, evaluating professionalism can help the operationalization of the theme and, consequently, the development of strategies for pharmacy consolidation before its challenges. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the professionalism of Brazilian pharmacists. Methods To meet the objective, a cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2022 and August 2023. Data were collected using the Brazilian version of the “Modification of Hall’s Professionalism Scale for Use with Pharmacists”. The scale has 39 items grouped into the domains: autonomy, vocation, professional council, self-regulation, continuing education, and altruism. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an ANOVA analysis of variance with post-hoc Hochberg or Games-Howell tests with Bootstrapping was conducted to verify differences between groups. Results 600 pharmacists participated in this study. The majority (69%) was female and carried out their professional activities in community pharmacies (50%). Professionalism scores ranged between 14 and 29 points, with an average of 22.8 points. Pharmacists working in outpatient clinics had higher scores in most factors, namely, altruism, continuing education, professional council, vocation, and autonomy. This indicates that the inclination of pharmacists to occupy areas focused on care can be significant to assess professionalism. Conclusions The data obtained indicate that pharmacists working in outpatient clinics had higher professionalism scores compared to others. This corroborates the worldwide trend experienced by pharmacy in recent decades, which is the execution of increasingly patient-centered practice models.

Loop-based intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) support the learning process using a step-by-step problem-solving approach. A limitation of ITSs is that few contents are compatible with this approach. On the other hand, recommendation systems can recommend different types of content but ignore the fine-grained concepts typical of the step-by-step approach. This work contributes to the solution of this state-of-the-art challenge by proposing an approach for the recommendation of learning objects from different areas of knowledge, considering the refined concepts of ITSs. To deal with this challenge, we formulate the learning object recommendation problem as the set covering problem that belongs to the NP-hard class problems. An exact algorithm and a greedy heuristic were properly adapted, resulting in a promising approach to solve these problems, as shown by the results. This resulted in more personalised content for students using collaborative filtering and an ontology that models their knowledge, learning styles and search parameters.

The increase in digital teaching and learning methodologies creates the opportunity for new educational approaches, both in terms of pedagogical practice and in the availability of new technological tools. The flipped classroom as an active teaching methodology is one example of blended learning (b-learning), which aims to harmonize and enhance the fusion of face-to-face teaching with online teaching, allowing students to get better use of both face-to-face contact with classmates and professors and digital teaching resources. However, active teaching methodologies allow us to merge educational techniques from different methodological approaches, for example, gamification and team-based learning (TBL), among others. This study aims to demonstrate how to implement a flipped classroom with the possibility of integrating gamification and TBL, indicating possibilities and challenges to overcome, through the comparative study and research carried out with students in higher education. The study was conducted with a group of 88 students from the engineering and technology fields, which showed that students have a very positive perception of active teaching methodologies and their teaching and learning techniques, especially those involving digital. Data collection was performed by a survey submitted to quantitative analysis using the Software SPSS version 28.

Inspired by the Studies on authoritarian personality and based on contemporary research on authoritarianism in Brazil, we will analyze the construction of the idol aura surrounding former president Bolsonaro, which allowed the far right to be elected and remain in power until the last elections in 2022. We see his rise as mostly due to the digital violence that largely benefited his campaign and was directed against the block of left-wing candidates. So as to clarify this issue, we will revisit the sociohistorical and psycho-political fundamentals of the antidemocratic and ethnocentric behaviors spurred by that leadership that became idolized. We will also outline an emancipatory, antiracist, culturally relevant and decolonial education, as a way to provide what Adorno regarded as being the antidote to the reemergence of a regressive barbarism. In the case of Brazil, barbarism refers to the remnants of the slave system implemented in the country for three and a half centuries, whose destructive potential was awakened under Bolsonaro's government, given the latent antidemocratic and authoritarian tendencies in our society.

Background: The Brazilian National Student Performance Examination - ENADE is an instrument used to measure the quality of undergraduate courses. The identification of factors that influence the result of this examination can contribute to providing support necessary to improve the quality of medical courses. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the factors that affect the National Student Performance Examination grades of Brazilian undergraduate medical programs. Methods: Factors that influenced the 2010 ENADE grades of 100 undergraduate medical programs were studied. Data collection was performed using public databases. Academic and healthcare infrastructure variables were investigated. The data analysis was based on the performance of the medical programs on the 2010 ENADE, whereby the programs were divided into two groups: ENADE 1-2 (unsatisfactory grade) versus ENADE 4-5 (satisfactory grade). Biochar derived from the pyrolysis of biomass is recognized for its carbon sequestration capacity. By adding physical or chemical activation steps, its properties can be enhanced, resulting in activated or modified biochar. However, investigating the possible toxic effects for safer application is necessary. In this study, we aimed to assess the ecotoxicological effects of extracts from biochars prepared from sugarcane bagasse activated with zinc chloride and heat treated at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1000 °C. Using Artemia salina as an indicator of toxicity, we observed variation in mortality ranging from 27.5 % to 100 % as the temperature varied between 1000 and 300 °C. The leachate from the sample prepared at 300 °C, which had the highest zinc content, presented an LC50 of 0.53 w/v. Phytotoxicity tests with Lactuca sativa revealed that extracts from biochars prepared at lower temperatures presented greater phytotoxicity, with reductions in relative germination, relative average radicle growth and the germination index. These results highlight the need to assess the ecotoxicological risks of activated biochar with zinc chloride. The sensitivities of Artemia salina and Lactuca sativa are promising for detecting these effects, suggesting that they are effective approaches for assessing environmental safety. These findings not only broaden our understanding of the adverse effects of activated biochar but also guide safe and sustainable practices for its future application.

The inclusion criterion was gingivitis with gingival bleeding. Participants were prescribed either aminaphtone or placebo. Thirty identical boxes containing blister packs of identical pills of either aminaphtone or placebo were produced and coded with unique numbers by the manufacturer (Baldacci Laboratory, Brazil) and donated for this trial. A research assistant administered aminaphtone (Capilarema 75 mg) to fifteen patients or placebo to fifteen patients twice daily for 5 days. To predict the stress-strain behaviour of soils under loading it is relevant the knowledge of its natural stress state, expressed by the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0). There are correlations in theliterature for K0 determination that comes from researches developed considering sedimentary soils,typically from temperate or cold regions. In dealing with residual and colluvium soils, typical of tropical regions, it is not appropriate to use these correlations, since K0 is affected by factors such as degree of weathering, laterization processes and suction, among others that also affect saturated sedimentary soils. This work analysed samples of a colluvium soil from a natural slope at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. For the determination of the coefficient of earth pressure at rest of the unsaturated colluvium soil, a flexible wall equipment, with a system of suction control was used. The influence of the net stress level on the value of the coefficient of earth pressure at rest was investigated under a constant suction of 10 kPa, following a loading and unloading cycle of applied vertical stress. The coefficient of earth pressure at rest of the saturated colluvium (null suction) was also determined using a stress-path, Bishop and Wesley type, servo-controlled triaxial equipment. The obtained results are presented and discussed.

Debris flow materials behave as a fluid, hence its analysis requires rheological parameters such as yield stress and viscosity. Yield stress is associated to the start and the end of the mass movement downhill in the sense that it denotes the yield transition from the creep to the flow regime, i.e., passage from solid to fluid state. This paper presents an experimental study of the yield stress of a colluvium from Rio de Janeiro, through its determination in a modified set-up of the slump test and in a rotational parallel plate rheometer. Tests were performed in five different water contents above its liquidity limit, providing a fairly good relationship between yield stress and water content. While slump test provides yield stress related to the beginning of the movement (acceleration), rheometer results are related to flow's outset and stoppage. As a result, the percentual differences between yield stresses associated with acceleration and deceleration were less than 5% in all testes, which is related to the low hysteresis effect in the flow curves obtained in the rotational rheometer. Comparing the two methodologies, it is proposed a correction from rheometer to slump test results. Results obtained are compared with data presented in other studies involving soil's yield stress, showing a good acceptance of the slump test results as a cheap alternative to rheometers.

This work concerns the development of a methodology for kinetic modelling of refining processes, and more specifically for vacuum residue conversion. The proposed approach allows to overcome the lack of molecular detail of the petroleum fractions and to simulate the transformation of the feedstock molecules into effluent molecules by means of a two-step procedure. In the first step, a synthetic mixture of molecules representing the feedstock for the process is generated via a molecular reconstruction method, termed SR-REM molecular reconstruction. In the second step, a kinetic Monte-Carlo method (kMC) is used to simulate the conversion reactions on this mixture of molecules. The molecular reconstruction was applied to several petroleum residues and is illustrated for an Athabasca (Canada) vacuum residue. The kinetic Monte-Carlo method is then described in detail. In order to validate this stochastic approach, a lumped deterministic model for vacuum residue conversion was simulated using Gillespie’s Stochastic Simulation Algorithm. Despite the fact that both approaches are based on very different hypotheses, the stochastic simulation algorithm simulates the conversion reactions with the same accuracy as the deterministic approach. The full-scale stochastic simulation approach using molecular-level reaction pathways provides high amounts of detail on the effluent composition and is briefly illustrated for Athabasca VR hydrocracking.

Endophytic microorganisms are promising sources for new biocatalysts as they must deal with their host plants’ chemicals by developing adaptative strategies, such as enzymatic pathways. As part of our efforts in selecting endophytic strains as biocatalysts, this study describes the screening of endophytic fungi isolated from Handroanthus impetiginosus leaves for selective bioreduction of Acetophenone. The bioreductions were monitored by chiral gas chromatography and conducted to the selection of the endophyte Talaromyces sp. H4 as capable of reducing acetophenone to (S)-1-phenylethanol in excellent conversion and enantiomeric excess rates. The influence of seven parameters on the stereoselective bioreduction of acetophenone by Talaromyces sp. H4 was studied: reaction time, inoculum charge, shaking, pH, temperature, substrate concentration, and co-solvent. The optimal conditions were then used to reduce substituted acetophenones and Acetophenone scale-up, which furnished (S)-1-Phenylethanol in 73% yield and 96% ee. The results highlight the endophytic fungus Talaromyces sp. H4 as an excellent biocatalyst for stereoselective reduction of prochiral carbonyls.
