We present spectroscopic data for four metastable state clear-out transitions between 399 nm and 412 nm for all even long-lived isotopes of Yb$^+$ as well as their hyperfine structure in $^{171}$Yb$^+$. The strong $^2 \rm{D}_{3/2} \rightarrow {}^1[1/2]_{1/2}$ transition at 412 nm represents an attractive alternative for the standard 935 nm repumper used in cooling and trapping experiments, while the transition to the $^3[3/2]_{3/2}$ state at 411 nm clears out the $^2 $F$_{7/2}$ state, for which typically 638 nm or 760 nm are used. These two alternative transitions simplify the experimental setup by removing the need for infrared optics to cool and manipulate Yb$^+$ and may be of particular interest when considering integrated photonics solutions. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the deflection of light produced by a topologically charged Holonomy corrected Schwarzschild black hole. The study is carried out both in the weak field limit and in the strong field limit. We analytically deduced the expansions for light deflection in the two limits and, from them, we determined the observables in order to provide elements so that observational tools are able to identify these solutions. This paper presents a routine to align an optical tweezer on a single trapped ion and use the ion as a probe to characterize the tweezer. We find a smallest tweezer waist of $2.3(2)\,\mu$m, which is in agreement with the theoretical minimal attainable waist of $2.5(2)\,\mu$m in our setup. We characterize the spatial dependence of the tweezer Rabi frequency which is suppressed by a factor of 19(3) in the immediate surrounding of the ion. We investigate the effects of optical forces and coherent population trapping on the ion. Finally, we show that the challenges posed by these forces can be overcome, and that the number of tweezers can be easily scaled up to reach several ions by using a spatial light modulator.

Centaurs, distinguished by their volatile-rich compositions, play a pivotal role in understanding the formation and evolution of the early solar system, as they represent remnants of the primordial material that populated the outer regions. Stellar occultations offer a means to investigate their physical properties, including shape, rotational state, or the potential presence of satellites and rings. This work aims to conduct a detailed study of the centaur (54598) Bienor through stellar occultations and rotational light curves from photometric data collected during recent years. We successfully predicted three stellar occultations by Bienor, which were observed from Japan, Eastern Europe, and the USA. In addition, we organized observational campaigns from Spain to obtain rotational light curves. At the same time, we develop software to generate synthetic light curves from three-dimensional shape models, enabling us to validate the outcomes through computer simulations. We resolve Bienor's projected ellipse for December 26, 2022, determine a prograde sense of rotation, and confirm an asymmetric rotational light curve. We also retrieve the axes of its triaxial ellipsoid shape as a = (127 $\pm$ 5) km, b = (55 $\pm$ 4) km, and c = (45 $\pm$ 4) km. Moreover, we refine the rotation period to 9.1736 $\pm$ 0.0002 hours and determine a geometric albedo of (6.5 $\pm$ 0.5) %, higher than previously determined by other methods. Finally, by comparing our findings with previous results and simulated rotational light curves, we analyze whether an irregular or contact-binary shape, the presence of an additional element such as a satellite, or significant albedo variations on Bienor's surface, may be present.

A classical Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium analysis, based on high-resolution spectroscopic data, is performed for a sample of three potential barium dwarf candidates and one star already recognized as such. We derived their atmospheric parameters, estimated their masses and luminosities, and determined chemical abundances for a set of 21 elements, including CNO. Some elemental abundances are derived for the first time in HD~15096, HD~37792, and HD~141804. The program stars are dwarfs/subgiants with metallicities typical of disc stars, exhibiting moderate carbon enhancements, with $\rm{[C/Fe]}$ ratios ranging from $+0.29$ to $+0.66$ dex, and high levels of \textit{slow} neutron-capture ($s$-process) elements, with $\rm{[\textit{s}/Fe]}\gtrsim +1.0$~dex. As spectroscopic binaries, their peculiarities are attributable to mass transfer events. The observed neutron-capture patterns of were individually compared with two sets of $s$-process nucleosynthesis models (Monash and {\sc fruity}), yielding dilution factors and masses estimates for the former polluting Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. Low-mass ($\lesssim 3.0~\rm{M}_{\odot}$) models successfully reproduce the observations. In addition, we estimated mean neutron exposures of the order of 0.6 -- 0.7 mb$^{-1}$ for the $s$-processed material observed in their envelopes. Applying an empirical initial-final mass relation, we constraint in $\sim 0.7\,\textrm{M}_{\odot}$ the mass of their dim white-dwarf companions. Moreover, our kinematic study revealed that the program stars are members of the thin disk, with probabilities greater than 70\%. Hence, we identified HD~15096 and HD~37792 as new barium dwarfs and confirmed that HD~141804 is a barium dwarf. In general, the atypical high velocity of some stars in the Galaxy can only be explained by invoking acceleration mechanisms related to extreme astrophysical events in the Milky Way. Using astrometric data from Gaia and the photometric information in 12 filters of the S-PLUS, we performed a kinematic, dynamical, and chemical analysis of 64 stars with galactocentric velocities higher than 400 $\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$. All the stars are gravitationally bound to the Galaxy and exhibit halo kinematics. Some of the stars could be remnants of structures such as the Sequoia and the Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus. Supported by orbital and chemical analysis, we identified Gaia DR3 5401875170994688896 as a star likely to be originated at the centre of the Galaxy. Application of a machine learning technique to the S-PLUS photometric data allows us to obtain very good estimates of magnesium abundances for this sample of high velocity stars.

The Centaur (60558) Echeclus was discovered on March 03, 2000, orbiting between the orbits of Jupiter and Uranus. After exhibiting frequent outbursts, it also received a comet designation, 174P. If the ejected material can be a source of debris to form additional structures, studying the surroundings of an active body like Echeclus can provide clues about the formation scenarios of rings, jets, or dusty shells around small bodies. Stellar occultation is a handy technique for this kind of investigation, as it can, from Earth-based observations, detect small structures with low opacity around these objects. Stellar occultation by Echeclus was predicted and observed in 2019, 2020, and 2021. We obtain upper detection limits of rings with widths larger than 0.5 km and optical depth of $\tau$ = 0.02. These values are smaller than those of Chariklo's main ring; in other words, a Chariklo-like ring would have been detected. The occultation observed in 2020 provided two positive chords used to derive the triaxial dimensions of Echeclus based on a 3D model and pole orientation available in the literature. We obtained $a = 37.0\pm0.6$ km, $b = 28.4 \pm 0.5$ km, and $c= 24.9 \pm 0.4$ km, resulting in an area-equivalent radius of $30.0 \pm 0.5$ km. Using the projected limb at the occultation epoch and the available absolute magnitude ($\rm{H}_{\rm{v}} = 9.971 \pm 0.031$), we calculate an albedo of $p_{\rm{v}} = 0.050 \pm 0.003$. In the present work, we theoretically investigate gravitational lensing in the spacetime of a holonomy corrected Schwarzschild black hole. Analytical expressions for the light deflection angle are obtained in both the weak field limit and the strong field limit. Furthermore, we analyze observables, such as relativistic images and magnifications, and compare the results with those expected in a Schwarzschild spacetime. We discuss the possibilities and difficulties of investigating such a solution in practice.

After the discovery of rings around the largest known Centaur object, (10199) Chariklo, we carried out observation campaigns of stellar occultations produced by the second-largest known Centaur object, (2060) Chiron, to better characterize its physical properties and presence of material on its surroundings. We predicted and successfully observed two stellar occultations by Chiron. These observations were used to constrain its size and shape by fitting elliptical limbs with equivalent surface radii in agreement with radiometric measurements. Constraints on the (2060) Chiron shape are reported for the first time. Assuming an equivalent radius of R$_{equiv}$ = 105$^{+6}_{-7}$ km, we obtained a semi-major axis of a = 126 $\pm$ 22 km. Considering Chiron's true rotational light curve amplitude and assuming it has a Jacobi equilibrium shape, we were able to derive a 3D shape with a semi-axis of a = 126 $\pm$ 22 km, b = 109 $\pm$ 19 km, and c = 68 $\pm$ 13 km, implying in a volume-equivalent radius of R$_{vol}$ = 98 $\pm$ 17 km, implying a density of 1119 $\pm$ 4 kg m$^{-3}$. We determined the physical properties of the 2011 secondary events around Chiron, which may then be directly compared with those of Chariklo rings, as the same method was used. Data obtained from SAAO in 2018 do not show unambiguous evidence of the proposed rings, mainly due to the large sampling time. Meanwhile, we discarded the possible presence of a permanent ring similar to (10199) Chariklo's C1R in optical depth and extension. Using the first multi-chord stellar occultation by (2060) Chiron and considering it to have a Jacobi equilibrium shape, we derived its 3D shape. New observations of a stellar occultation by (2060) Chiron are needed to further investigate the material's properties around Chiron, such as the occultation predicted for September 10, 2023.

This work aims at constraining the size, shape, and geometric albedo of the dwarf planet candidate 2002 MS4 through the analysis of nine stellar occultation events. Using multichord detection, we also studied the object's topography by analyzing the obtained limb and the residuals between observed chords and the best-fitted ellipse. We predicted and organized the observational campaigns of nine stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2022, resulting in two single-chord events, four double-chord detections, and three events with three to up to sixty-one positive chords. Using 13 selected chords from the 8 August 2020 event, we determined the global elliptical limb of 2002 MS4. The best-fitted ellipse, combined with the object's rotational information from the literature, constrains the object's size, shape, and albedo. Additionally, we developed a new method to characterize topography features on the object's limb. The global limb has a semi-major axis of 412 $\pm$ 10 km, a semi-minor axis of 385 $\pm$ 17 km, and the position angle of the minor axis is 121 $^\circ$ $\pm$ 16$^\circ$. From this instantaneous limb, we obtained 2002 MS4's geometric albedo and the projected area-equivalent diameter. Significant deviations from the fitted ellipse in the northernmost limb are detected from multiple sites highlighting three distinct topographic features: one 11 km depth depression followed by a 25$^{+4}_{-5}$ km height elevation next to a crater-like depression with an extension of 322 $\pm$ 39 km and 45.1 $\pm$ 1.5 km deep. Our results present an object that is $\approx$138 km smaller in diameter than derived from thermal data, possibly indicating the presence of a so-far unknown satellite. However, within the error bars, the geometric albedo in the V-band agrees with the results published in the literature, even with the radiometric-derived albedo.

We could accurately predict the shadow path and successfully observe an occultation of a bright star by Chiron on 2022 December 15. The Kottamia Astronomical Observatory in Egypt did not detect the occultation by the solid body, but we detected three extinction features in the light curve that had symmetrical counterparts with respect to the central time of the occultation. One of the features is broad and shallow, whereas the other two features are sharper with a maximum extinction of $\sim$25$\%$ at the achieved spatial resolution of 19 km per data point. From the Wise observatory in Israel, we detected the occultation caused by the main body and several extinction features surrounding the body. When all the secondary features are plotted in the sky plane we find that they can be caused by a broad $\sim$580 km disk with concentrations at radii of 325 \pm 16 km and 423 \pm 11 km surrounding Chiron. At least one of these structures appears to be outside the Roche limit. The ecliptic coordinates of the pole of the disk are $\lambda$ = 151$^\circ~\pm$ 8$^\circ$ and $\beta$ = 18$^\circ~\pm$ 11$^\circ$, in agreement with previous results. We also show our long-term photometry indicating that Chiron had suffered a brightness outburst of at least 0.6 mag between March and September 2021 and that Chiron was still somewhat brighter at the occultation date than at its nominal pre-outburst phase. The outermost extinction features might be consistent with a bound or temporarily bound structure associated with the brightness increase. However, the nature of the brightness outburst is unclear, and it is also unclear whether the dust or ice released in the outburst could be feeding a putative ring structure or if it emanated from it., Comment: 6 pages, 4, figures

In the present paper, we study several aspects of gravitational lensing caused by a topologically charged Monopole/Wormhole, both in the weak field limit and in the strong field limit. We calculate the light deflection and then use it to determine the observables, with which one can investigate the existence of these objects through observational tools. We emphasize that the presence of the topological charge produces changes in the observables in relation to the case of General Relativity Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole.

Quaoar is a classical Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO) with an area equivalent diameter of 1,100 km and an orbital semi-major axis of 43.3 astronomical units. Based on stellar occultations observed between 2018 and 2021, an inhomogeneous ring (Q1R, Quaoar's first ring) was detected around this body. Aims. A new stellar occultation by Quaoar was observed on August 9th, 2022 aiming to improve Quaoar's shape models and the physical parameters of Q1R while searching for additional material around the body. Methods. The occultation provided nine effective chords across Quaoar, pinning down its size, shape, and astrometric position. Large facilities, such as Gemini North and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), were used to obtain high acquisition rates and signal-to-noise ratios. The light curves were also used to characterize the Q1R ring (radial profiles and orbital elements). Results. Quaoar's elliptical fit to the occultation chords yields the limb with an apparent semi-major axis of $579.5\pm4.0$ km, apparent oblateness of $0.12\pm0.01$, and area-equivalent radius of $543\pm2$ km. Quaoar's limb orientation is consistent with Q1R and Weywot orbiting in Quaoar's equatorial plane. The orbital radius of Q1R is refined to a value of $4,057\pm6$ km. The radial opacity profile of the more opaque ring profile follows a Lorentzian shape that extends over 60 km, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\sim5$ km and a peak normal optical depth of 0.4. Besides the secondary events related to the already reported rings, new secondary events detected during the August 2022 occultation in three different data sets are consistent with another ring around Quaoar with a radius of $2,520\pm20$ km, assuming the ring is circular and co-planar with Q1R. This new ring has a typical width of 10 km and a normal optical depth of $\sim$0.004. In spite of the advent of extremely large telescopes in the UV/optical/NIR range, the current generation of 8-10m facilities is likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. The Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) has been designed to provide high-efficiency (>40%) observations in the near UV (305-400 nm requirement, 300-420 nm goal) at a spectral resolving power of R>20,000, although a lower-resolution, sky-limited mode of R ~ 7,000 is also planned. CUBES will offer new possibilities in many fields of astrophysics, providing access to key lines of stellar spectra: a tremendous diversity of iron-peak and heavy elements, lighter elements (in particular Beryllium) and light-element molecules (CO, CN, OH), as well as Balmer lines and the Balmer jump (particularly important for young stellar objects). The UV range is also critical in extragalactic studies: the circumgalactic medium of distant galaxies, the contribution of different types of sources to the cosmic UV background, the measurement of H2 and primordial Deuterium in a regime of relatively transparent intergalactic medium, and follow-up of explosive transients. The CUBES project completed a Phase A conceptual design in June 2021 and has now entered the Phase B dedicated to detailed design and construction. First science operations are planned for 2028. We aim to analyse the abundance pattern of 169 Barium (Ba) stars, using machine learning techniques and the AGB final surface abundances predicted by Fruity and Monash stellar models. We developed machine learning algorithms that use the abundance pattern of Ba stars as input to classify the initial mass and metallicity of its companion star using stellar model predictions. We use two algorithms: the first exploits neural networks to recognise patterns and the second is a nearest-neighbour algorithm, which focuses on finding the AGB model that predicts final surface abundances closest to the observed Ba star values. In the second algorithm we include the error bars and observational uncertainties to find the best fit model. The classification process is based on the abundances of Fe, Rb, Sr, Zr, Ru, Nd, Ce, Sm, and Eu. We selected these elements by systematically removing s-process elements from our AGB model abundance distributions, and identifying those whose removal has the biggest positive effect on the classification. We excluded Nb, Y, Mo, and La. Our final classification combines the output of both algorithms to identify for each Ba star companion an initial mass and metallicity range. With our analysis tools we identify the main properties for 166 of the 169 Ba stars in the stellar sample. The classifications based on both stellar sets of AGB final abundances show similar distributions, with an average initial mass of M = 2.23 MSun and 2.34 MSun and an average [Fe/H] = -0.21 and -0.11, respectively. We investigated why the removal of Nb, Y, Mo, and La improves our classification and identified 43 stars for which the exclusion had the biggest effect. We show that these stars have statistically significant different abundances for these elements compared to the other Ba stars in our sample. We present detailed chemical compositions of four stars on the first-ascent red giant branch that are classified as chemically peculiar, but lack comprehensive analyses at high spectral resolution. For BD+03{\deg}2688, HE 0457-1805, HE 1255-2324, and HE 2207-1746, we derived metallicities [Fe/H] $=-1.21$, $-0.19$, $-0.31$, and $-0.55$, respectively, indicating a range in Galactic population membership. In addition to atmospheric parameters, we extracted elemental abundances for 28 elements, including the evolutionary-sensitive CNO group and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios. Novel results are also presented for the heavy elements tungsten and thallium. All four stars have very large enhancements of neutron-capture elements, with high [La/Eu] ratios indicating enrichments from the slow neutron capture ($s$-process). To interpret these abundances, all indicative of [$s$/Fe] $> 1.0$, we compared our results with data from literature, as well as with predictions from the Monash and FRUITY $s$-process nucleosynthesis models. BD+03{\deg}2688, HE 1255-2324, and HE 2207-1746 show C/O $>1$, while HE 0457-1805 has C/O $<1$. Since HE 0457-1805 and HE 1255-2324 are binary stars, their peculiarities are attributable to mass transfer. We identified HE 0457-1805 as a new barium giant star, and HE 1255-2324 as a new CH star, in fact a higher metallicity analogue CEMP-$r/s$ star; the single object reported in literature so far with similar characteristics is the barium star HD 100503 ([Fe/H] $= -0.72$). Within our program of physical characterization of trans-Neptunian objects and centaurs, we predicted a stellar occultation by the centaur (54598) Bienor to occur on January 11, 2019, with good observability potential. We obtained high accuracy astrometric data to refine the prediction, resulting in a shadow path favorable for the Iberian Peninsula. This encouraged us to carry out an occultation observation campaign that resulted in five positive detections from four observing sites. This is the fourth centaur for which a multichord (more than two chords) stellar occultation has been observed so far, the other three being (2060) Chiron, (10199) Chariklo, and (95626) 2002 GZ$_{32}$. From the analysis of the occultation chords, combined with the rotational light curve obtained shortly after the occultation, we determined that Bienor has an area-equivalent diameter of $150\pm20$ km. This diameter is $\sim30$ km smaller than the one obtained from thermal measurements. The position angle of the short axis of the best fitting ellipse obtained through the analysis of the stellar occultation does not match that of the spin axis derived from long-term photometric models. We also detected a strong irregularity in one of the minima of the rotational light curve that is present no matter the aspect angle at which the observations were done. We present different scenarios to reconcile the results from the different techniques. We did not detect secondary drops related to potential rings or satellites. The ExoClock project has been created with the aim of increasing the efficiency of the Ariel mission. It will achieve this by continuously monitoring and updating the ephemerides of Ariel candidates over an extended period, in order to produce a consistent catalogue of reliable and precise ephemerides. This work presents a homogenous catalogue of updated ephemerides for 450 planets, generated by the integration of $\sim$18000 data points from multiple sources. These sources include observations from ground-based telescopes (ExoClock network and ETD), mid-time values from the literature and light-curves from space telescopes (Kepler/K2 and TESS). With all the above, we manage to collect observations for half of the post-discovery years (median), with data that have a median uncertainty less than one minute. In comparison with literature, the ephemerides generated by the project are more precise and less biased. More than 40\% of the initial literature ephemerides had to be updated to reach the goals of the project, as they were either of low precision or drifting. Moreover, the integrated approach of the project enables both the monitoring of the majority of the Ariel candidates (95\%), and also the identification of missing data. The dedicated ExoClock network effectively supports this task by contributing additional observations when a gap in the data is identified. These results highlight the need for continuous monitoring to increase the observing coverage of the candidate planets. Finally, the extended observing coverage of planets allows us to detect trends (TTVs - Transit Timing Variations) for a sample of 19 planets. Stellar occultation is a powerful technique that allows the determination of some physical parameters of the occulting object. The result depends on the photometric accuracy, the temporal resolution, and the number of chords obtained. Space telescopes can achieve high photometric accuracy as they are not affected by atmospheric scintillation. Using ESA's CHEOPS space telescope, we observed a stellar occultation by the Transneptunian object (50000) Quaoar. We compare the obtained chord with previous occultations by this object and determine its astrometry with sub-milliarcsecond precision. Also, we determine upper limits to the presence of a global methane atmosphere on the occulting body. We predicted and observed a stellar occultation by Quaoar using the CHEOPS space telescope. We measured the occultation light curve from this data-set and determined the dis- and re-appearance of the star behind the occulting body. Furthermore, a ground-based telescope in Australia was used to constrain Quaoar's limb. Combined with results from previous works, these measurements allow us to obtain a precise position of Quaoar at the occultation time. We present results obtained from the first stellar occultation by a Transneptunian object (TNO) using space telescope orbiting Earth. It was the occultation by Quaoar observed on 2020 June 11. We used the CHEOPS light curve to obtain a surface pressure upper limit of 85 nbar for the detection of a global methane atmosphere. Also, combining this observation with a ground-based observation we fit Quaoar's limb to determine its astrometric position with an uncertainty below 1.0 mas. This observation is a first of its kind, and it shall be considered as a proof of concept of stellar occultation observations of Transneptunian objects with space telescopes orbiting Earth. In the era of Extremely Large Telescopes, the current generation of 8-10m facilities are likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60~live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c$^2$. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36 GeV/c$^2$, rejecting cross sections above 9.2$\times 10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Within our international program to obtain accurate physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) we predicted a stellar occultation by the TNO (38628) Huya of the star Gaia DR2 4352760586390566400 (mG = 11.5 mag.) for March 18, 2019. After an extensive observational campaign, we updated the prediction and it turned out to be favorable to central Europe. Therefore, we mobilized half a hundred professional and amateur astronomers, and the occultation was finally detected from 21 telescopes located at 18 sites. This makes the Huya event one of the best ever observed stellar occultation by a TNO in terms of the number of chords. We determine accurate size, shape, and geometric albedo, and we also provide constraints on the density and other internal properties of this TNO. The 21 positive detections of the occultation by Huya allowed us to obtain well-separated chords which permitted us to fit an ellipse for the limb of the body at the moment of the occultation (i.e., the instantaneous limb) with kilometric accuracy. The projected semi-major and minor axes of the best ellipse fit obtained using the occultation data are (a', b') = (217.6 $\pm$ 3.5 km, 194.1 $\pm$ 6.1 km) with a position angle of the minor axis P' = 55.2 $\pm$ 9.1 degrees. From this fit, the projected area-equivalent diameter is 411.0 $\pm$ 7.3 km. This diameter is compatible with the equivalent diameter for Huya obtained from radiometric techniques (D = 406 $\pm$ 16 km). From this instantaneous limb, we obtained the geometric albedo for Huya (p$\rm_V$ = 0.079 $\pm$ 0.004) and we explored possible 3D shapes and constraints to the mass density for this TNO. We did not detect the satellite of Huya through this occultation, but the presence of rings or debris around Huya is constrained using the occultation data. We predicted, observed, and analyzed the multichord stellar occultation of the Second Gaia Data Release (Gaia DR2) source 3449076721168026624 (m$_v$ = 14.1 mag) by the plutino object 2003 VS$_2$ (hereafter, VS$_2$) on 2019 October 22. We also carried out photometric observations to derive the rotational light curve amplitude and rotational phase of VS$_2$ during the stellar occultation. Combining the results and assuming a triaxial shape, we derived the 3D shape of VS$_2$. Out of the 39 observatories involved in the observational campaign, 12 sites reported a positive detection; this makes it one of the best observed stellar occultations by a TNO so far. We obtained a rotational light curve amplitude of ${\Delta}$m = 0.264 $\pm$ 0.017 mag, a mean area-equivalent diameter of D$_{A_{eq}}$ = 545 $\pm$ 13 km, and a geometric albedo of 0.134 $\pm$ 0.010. The best triaxial shape obtained for VS$_2$ has semiaxes a = 339 $\pm$ 5 km, b = 235 $\pm$ 6 km, and c = 226 $\pm$ 8 km. The derived aspect angle is ${\theta}$ = 59${\deg} \pm$ 2${\deg}$ or its supplementary ${\theta}$ = 121${\deg} \pm$ 2${\deg}$, depending on the north-pole position. The spherical-volume equivalent diameter is D$_{V_{eq}}$ = 524 $\pm$ 7 km. If we consider large albedo patches on its surface, the semi-major axis of the ellipsoid could be ~10 km smaller. These results are compatible with the previous ones determined from the single-chord 2013 and four-chord 2014 stellar occultations and with the effective diameter and albedo derived from Herschel and Spitzer data. They provide evidence that VS$_2$'s 3D shape is not compatible with a homogeneous triaxial body in hydrostatic equilibrium, but it might be a differentiated body and/or might be sustaining some stress. No secondary features related to rings or material orbiting around VS$_2$ were detected.

A stellar occultation occurs when a Solar System object passes in front of a star for an observer. This technique allows the determination of sizes and shapes of the occulting body with kilometer precision. Also, this technique constrains the occulting body's positions, albedos, densities, etc. In the context of the Galilean moons, these events can provide their best ground-based astrometry, with uncertainties in the order of 1 mas ($\sim$ 3 km at Jupiter's distance during opposition). We organized campaigns and successfully observed a stellar occultation by Io (JI) in 2021, one by Ganymede (JIII) in 2020, and one by Europa (JII) in 2019, with stations in North and South America. Also, we re-analyzed two previously published events, one by Europa in 2016 and another by Ganymede in 2017. Then, we fit the known 3D shape of the occulting satellite and determine its center of figure. That resulted in astrometric positions with uncertainties in the milliarcsecond level. The positions obtained from these stellar occultations can be used together with dynamical models to ensure highly accurate orbits of the Galilean moons. Barium (Ba) stars are polluted by material enriched in the slow neutron capture (s-process) elements synthesised in the interior of their former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion star, which is now a white dwarf. We compare individual Ba star abundance patterns to AGB nucleosynthesis models to verify if the AGB model mass is compatible with independently derived AGB mass. We selected a sample of 28 Ba stars for which both self-consistent spectroscopic observation and analysis are available and stellar mass determinations, via positioning the star on the HR diagram and comparing with evolutionary tracks. For this sample stars we considered both previously and recently derived elemental abundances. Then, we performed a detailed comparison of these s-process elemental abundances to different AGB nucleosynthesis models from the Monash and the FRUITY theoretical data sets. We simplified the binary mass transfer by calculating dilution factors to match the [Ce/Fe] value of each star when using different AGB models, and we then compared the diluted model abundances to the complete Ba-star abundance pattern. Our comparison confirms that low mass, non-rotating AGB stellar models with 13C as the main neutron source are the polluters of the vast majority of the considered Ba stars. Out of the 28 stars, in 21 cases the models are in good agreement with both the determined abundances and the independently derived AGB mass, although in 16 cases higher observed abundances of Nb, Ru, Mo and/or Nd, Sm than predicted. For 3 stars we obtain a match to the abundances only by considering models with masses lower than those independently determined. Finally, 4 stars show much higher first s-process peak abundance values than the model predictions, which may represent the signature of a physical and/or nucleosynthetic process that is not represented in the set of models considered here., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. The ExoClock project is an inclusive, integrated, and interactive platform that was developed to monitor the ephemerides of the Ariel targets to increase the mission efficiency. The project makes the best use of all available resources, i.e., observations from ground telescopes, mid-time values from the literature and finally, observations from space instruments. Currently, the ExoClock network includes 280 participants with telescopes capable of observing 85\% of the currently known Ariel candidate targets. This work includes the results of $\sim$1600 observations obtained up to the 31st of December 2020 from the ExoClock network. These data in combination with $\sim$2350 mid-time values collected from the literature are used to update the ephemerides of 180 planets. The analysis shows that 40\% of the updated ephemerides will have an impact on future scheduling as either they have a significantly improved precision, or they have revealed biases in the old ephemerides. With the new observations, the observing coverage and rate for half of the planets in the sample has been doubled or more. Finally, from a population perspective, we identify that the differences in the 2028 predictions between the old and the new ephemerides have an STD that is double what is expected from gaussian uncertainties. These findings have implications for planning future observations, where we will need to account for drifts potentially greater than the prediction uncertainties. In the present work, we carry out the study of scattering solitons for the anti-kink/kink and kink/anti-kink configurations. Furthermore, we can observe the same effects as those described by D. Bazeia et al.. We apply the collective coordinate approximation method to describe both scattering configurations and verify that just as happens in the polynomial models $\phi^4$ and $\phi^6$, the method has its limitations regarding the initial scattering speeds. In such a way that, for certain initial speeds, the solution of collective coordinates agrees with the fullsimulation, and for other speeds, there is a discrepancy in the solutions obtained by these two methods. We also noticed that, considering the hybrid model, the null-vector problem persists for both configurations, and when trying to fix it, a singularity is created in moduli-space as well as in $\phi^4$.

We present the first results of K2-OjOS, a collaborative project between professional and amateur astronomers primarily aimed to detect, characterize, and validate new extrasolar planets. For this work, 10 amateur astronomers looked for planetary signals by visually inspecting the 20 427 light curves of K2 campaign 18 (C18). They found 42 planet candidates, of which 18 are new detections and 24 had been detected in the overlapping C5 by previous works. We used archival photometric and spectroscopic observations, as well as new high-spatial resolution images in order to carry out a complete analysis of the candidates found, including a homogeneous characterization of the host stars, transit modelling, search for transit timing variations and statistical validation. As a result, we report four new planets (K2-355 b, K2-356 b, K2-357 b, and K2-358 b) and 14 planet candidates. Besides, we refine the transit ephemeris of the previously published planets and candidates by modelling C5, C16 (when available) and C18 photometric data jointly, largely improving the period and mid-transit time precision. Regarding individual systems, we highlight the new planet K2-356 b and candidate EPIC 211537087.02 being near a 2:1 period commensurability, the detection of significant TTVs in the bright star K2-184 (V = 10.35), the location of K2-103 b inside the habitable zone according to optimistic models, the detection of a new single transit in the known system K2-274, and the disposition reassignment of K2-120 b, which we consider as a planet candidate as the origin of the signal cannot be ascertained., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

New elemental abundances for the neutron-capture elements Sr, Nb, Mo, Ru, La, Sm, and Eu are presented for a large sample of 180 barium (Ba) giant stars, a class of chemically peculiar objects that exhibit in their spectra enhancements of the elements created by the $s$-process, as a consequence of mass transfer between the components of a binary system. The content of heavy elements in these stars, in fact, points to nucleosynthesis mechanisms that took place within a former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion, now an invisible white dwarf. From high-resolution ($R=48000$) spectra in the optical, we derived the abundances either by equivalent width measurements or synthetic spectra computations, and compared them with available data for field giant and dwarf stars in the same range of metallicity. A re-determination of La abundances resulted in [La/Fe] ratios up to 1.2 dex lower than values previously reported in literature. The program Ba stars show overabundance of neutron-capture elements, except for Eu, for which the observational data set behave similarly to field stars. Comparison to model predictions are satisfactory for second-to-first $s$-process peak ratios (e.g., [La/Sr]) and the ratios of the predominantly $r$-process element Eu to La. However, the observed [Nb,Mo,Ru/Sr] and [Ce,Nd,Sm/La] ratios show median values higher or at the upper limits of the ranges of the model predictions. The Centaur (10199) Chariklo has the first rings system discovered around a small object. It was first observed using stellar occultation in 2013. Stellar occultations allow the determination of sizes and shapes with kilometre accuracy and obtain characteristics of the occulting object and its vicinity. Using stellar occultations observed between 2017 and 2020, we aim at constraining Chariklo's and its rings physical parameters. We also determine the rings' structure, and obtain precise astrometrical positions of Chariklo. We predicted and organised several observational campaigns of stellar occultations by Chariklo. Occultation light curves were measured from the data sets, from which ingress and egress times, and rings' width and opacity were obtained. These measurements, combined with results from previous works, allow us to obtain significant constraints on Chariklo's shape and rings' structure. We characterise Chariklo's ring system (C1R and C2R), and obtain radii and pole orientations that are consistent with, but more accurate than, results from previous occultations. We confirmed the detection of W-shaped structures within C1R and an evident variation of radial width. The observed width ranges between 4.8 and 9.1 km with a mean value of 6.5 km. One dual observation (visible and red) does not reveal any differences in the C1R opacity profiles, indicating ring particle's size larger than a few microns. The C1R ring eccentricity is found to be smaller than 0.022 (3-sigma), and its width variations may indicate an eccentricity higher than 0.005. We fit a tri-axial shape to Chariklo's detections over eleven occultations and determine that Chariklo is consistent with an ellipsoid with semi-axes of 143.8, 135.2 and 99.1 km. We report the discovery of a new emission-line object, named SPH4-South = (GAIA EDR3 5616553300192230272), towards the dark cloud LDN 1667. This object came to our attention after inspecting public images that show a faint diffuse nebula a few arcsec southern from SPH4, an emission-line object previously classified as a T Tauri star. We present high-resolution spectra and analyzed JHK photometry of SPH4 and SPH4-South, and new narrow-band and archival broad-band images of these objects. A comparison of the spectra of SPH4 and SPH4-South with high-resolution ones of DG Cir and R Mon, strongly suggests that SPH 4 and SPH4-South are Herbig Ae/Be stars. The classification of SPH4-South is further supported by using a k-NN algorithm to its position in H-K versus J-H color-color diagram. Both stars are detected in the four WISE bands and the WISE colors allow us to classify SPH4 as a Class I and SPH4-South as a Class II source. We also show that the faint nebula is most probably associated with SPH4-South. Using published results on LDN 1667 and the Gaia Early Data Release 3, we conclude that SPH4 is a member of LDN 1667. The case of SPH4-South is not clear because the determination of its distance and proper motion could be affected by the nebulosity around the star, although membership of SPH4-South to LDN 1667 cannot be ruled out., Comment: Accepted for The Astronomical Journal, 9 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; 2 Appendices

Soliton hydrodynamics is an appealing tool to describe strong turbulence in low-dimensional systems. Strong turbulence in quasi-one dimensional spuerfluids, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, involves the dynamics of dark solitons and, therefore, the description of a statistical ensemble of dark-solitons, i.e. soliton gases, is necessary. In this work, we propose a phase-space (kinetic) description of dark-soliton gases, introducing a kinetic equation that is formally similar to the Vlasov equation in plasma physics. We show that the proposed kinetic theory can capture the dynamical features of soliton gases and show that it sustains an acoustic mode, a fact that we corroborate with the help of direct numerical simulations. Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) and Centaurs are remnants of our planetary system formation, and their physical properties have invaluable information for evolutionary theories. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method for studying these small bodies and has presented exciting results. These observations can provide precise profiles of the involved body, allowing an accurate determination of its size and shape. The goal is to show that even single-chord detections of TNOs allow us to measure their milliarcsecond astrometric positions in the reference frame of the Gaia second data release (DR2). Accurated ephemerides can then be generated, allowing predictions of stellar occultations with much higher reliability. We analyzed data from stellar occultations to obtain astrometric positions of the involved bodies. The events published before the Gaia era were updated so that the Gaia DR2 catalog is the reference. Previously determined sizes were used to calculate the position of the object center and its corresponding error with respect to the detected chord and the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS) propagated Gaia DR2 star position. We derive 37 precise astrometric positions for 19 TNOs and 4 Centaurs. Twenty-one of these events are presented here for the first time. Although about 68\% of our results are based on single-chord detection, most have intrinsic precision at the submilliarcsecond level. Lower limits on the diameter and shape constraints for a few bodies are also presented as valuable byproducts. Using the Gaia DR2 catalog, we show that even a single detection of a stellar occultation allows improving the object ephemeris significantly, which in turn enables predicting a future stellar occultation with high accuracy. We present results from the first recorded stellar occultation by the large trans-Neptunian object (174567) Varda that was observed on September 10$^{\rm th}$, 2018. Varda belongs to the high-inclination dynamically excited population, and has a satellite, Ilmar\"e, which is half the size of Varda. We determine the size and albedo of Varda and constrain its 3D shape and density. Thirteen different sites in the USA monitored the event, five of which detected an occultation by the main body. A best-fitting ellipse to the occultation chords provides the instantaneous limb of the body, from which the geometric albedo is computed. The size and shape of Varda are evaluated, and its bulk density is constrained, using Varda's mass known from previous works. The best-fitting elliptical limb has semi-major (equatorial) axis of $(383 \pm 3)$km and an apparent oblateness $0.066\pm0.047$ corresponding to an apparent area-equivalent radius $R'_{\rm equiv}= (370\pm7)$km and geometric albedo $p_v=0.099\pm 0.002 $ assuming a visual absolute magnitude $H_V=3.81\pm0.01$. Using three possible rotational periods for the body (4.76h, 5.91h, and 7.87h), we derive corresponding MacLaurin solutions. Furthermore, given the low-amplitude ($0.06\pm0.01$) mag of the single-peaked rotational light-curve for the aforementioned periods, we consider the double periods. For the 5.91h period (the most probable) and its double (11.82h), we find bulk densities and true oblateness of $\rho=(1.78\pm0.06)$ g cm$^{-3}$, $\epsilon=0.235\pm0.050$ and $\rho=(1.23\pm0.04)$ g cm$^{-3}$, $\epsilon=0.080\pm0.049$. The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will soon start to scan thousands of square degrees of the northern extragalactic sky with a unique set of $56$ optical filters from a dedicated $2.55$m telescope, JST, at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Before the arrival of the final instrument (a 1.2 Gpixels, 4.2deg$^2$ field-of-view camera), the JST was equipped with an interim camera (JPAS-Pathfinder), composed of one CCD with a 0.3deg$^2$ field-of-view and resolution of 0.23 arcsec pixel$^{-1}$. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, with the JPAS-Pathfinder camera we carried out a survey on the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip), dubbed miniJPAS. We observed a total of $\sim 1$ deg$^2$, with the $56$ J-PAS filters, which include $54$ narrow band (NB, $\rm{FWHM} \sim 145$Angstrom) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the $u,g,r,i$ SDSS broad band (BB) filters. In this paper we present the miniJPAS data set, the details of the catalogues and data access, and illustrate the scientific potential of our multi-band data. The data surpass the target depths originally planned for J-PAS, reaching $\rm{mag}_{\rm {AB}}$ between $\sim 22$ and $23.5$ for the NB filters and up to $24$ for the BB filters ($5\sigma$ in a $3$~arcsec aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalogue contains more than $64,000$ sources extracted in the $r$ detection band with forced photometry in all other bands. We estimate the catalogue to be complete up to $r=23.6$ for point-like sources and up to $r=22.7$ for extended sources. Photometric redshifts reach subpercent precision for all sources up to $r=22.5$, and a precision of $\sim 0.3$% for about half of the sample. LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $1.4 \times 10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c$^{2}$ and a 1000 d exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented., Comment: 45 pages (79 inc. tables), 7 figures, 9 tables

In this work, we present an investigation regarding how and why molecular hydrogen changes the electronic properties of graphene field effect transistors. We demonstrate that interaction with H2 leads to local doping of graphene near of the graphene-contact heterojunction. We also show that such interaction is strongly dependent on the characteristics of the metal-graphene interface. By changing the type metal in the contact, we observe that Ohmic contacts can be strongly or weakly electrostatically coupled with graphene. For strongly coupled contacts, the signature of the charge transfer effect promoted by the contacts results on an asymmetric ambipolar conduction, and such asymmetry can be tunable under interaction with H2. On the other hand, for contacts weakly coupled with graphene, the hydrogen interaction has a more profound effect. In such situation, the devices show a second charge neutrality point in graphene transistor transfer curves (a double-peak response) upon H2 exposure. We propose that this double-peak phenomenon arises from the decoupling of the work function of graphene and that of the metallic electrodes induced by the H2 molecules. We also show that the gas-induced modifications at the metal-graphene interface can be exploited to create a controlled graphene p-n junction, with considerable electron transfer to graphene layer and significant variation in the graphene resistance. These effects can pave the way for a suitable metallic contact engineering providing great potential for the application of such devices as gas sensors.

From the approximately $\sim$3,500 planetary nebulae (PNe) discovered in our Galaxy, only 14 are known to be members of the Galactic halo. Nevertheless, a systematic search for halo PNe has never been performed. In this study, we present new photometric diagnostic tools to identify compact PNe in the Galactic halo by making use of the novel 12-filter system projects, J-PLUS (Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey) and S-PLUS (Southern-Photometric Local Universe Survey). We reconstructed the IPHAS (Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) Photometric H${\alpha}$ Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane) diagnostic diagram and propose four new ones using i) the J-PLUS and S-PLUS synthetic photometry for a grid of photo-ionisation models of halo PNe, ii) several observed halo PNe, as well as iii) a number of other emission-line objects that resemble PNe. All colour-colour diagnostic diagrams are validated using two known halo PNe observed by J-PLUS during the scientific verification phase and the first data release (DR1) of S-PLUS and the DR1 of J-PLUS. By applying our criteria to the DR1s ($\sim$1,190 deg$^2$), we identified one PN candidate. However, optical follow-up spectroscopy proved it to be a H II region belonging to the UGC 5272 galaxy. Here, we also discuss the PN and two H II galaxies recovered by these selection criteria. Finally, the cross-matching with the most updated PNe catalogue (HASH) helped us to highlight the potential of these surveys, since we recover all the known PNe in the observed area. The tools here proposed to identify PNe and separate them from their emission-line contaminants proved to be very efficient thanks to the combination of many colours, even when applied -like in the present work- to an automatic photometric search that is limited to compact PNe., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication at A&A
