3. Multi-band characterization of the hot Jupiters: WASP-5b, WASP-44b and WASP-46b

Abstract

We have carried out a campaign to characterize the hot Jupiters WASP-5b, WASP-44b and WASP-46b using multiband photometry collected at the Observat\'orio do Pico Dos Dias in Brazil. We have determined the planetary physical properties and new transit ephemerides for these systems. The new orbital parameters and physical properties of WASP-5b and WASP-44b are consistent with previous estimates. In the case of WASP-46b, there is some quota of disagreement between previous results. We provide a new determination of the radius of this planet and help clarify the previous differences. We also studied the transit time variations including our new measurements. No clear variation from a linear trend was found for the systems WASP-5b and WASP-44b. In the case of WASP-46b, we found evidence of deviations indicating the presence of a companion but statistical analysis of the existing times points to a signal due to the sampling rather than a new planet. Finally, we studied the fractional radius variation as a function of wavelength for these systems. The broad-band spectrums of WASP-5b and WASP-44b are mostly flat. Abstract

Secondary exposure of predators to anticoagulant rodenticides, and in particular second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs), is a global phenomenon. The widespread and large-scale nature of this exposure has attracted considerable concern, although the consequences in terms of likelihood of poisoning of individuals and resultant impacts on populations are not well characterised. Secondary exposure of predators may as rise from once or more of: (i) eating contaminated commensal rodents subject to control (target species are typically rats and house mice); (ii) consumption of contaminated non-target small mammals (such as Peromyscus, Microtus, and Apodemus species) that encounter and feed on what are rodent-attractive baits; (iii) consumption of non-rodent vertebrate and invertebrate prey that may also incidentally encounter and eat baits. We hypothesised that predators feeding primarily on target species may be most at risk of exposure to SGARs while those predominantly taking non-mammalian prey may be at least risk. We tested this hypothesis by comparing exposure, determined from the presence and magnitude of SGAR liver residues, in red kites (Milvus milvus), which feeds extensively on rats, in barn owls (Tyto alba), kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), and tawny owls (Strix aluco) that feed widely on non-target small mammals, and in sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus) that feed predominantly on small birds. We found that the scale and magnitude of exposure was broadly consistent with our hypothesis, and that controlling for age in the analysis could be important as older birds can accumulate residues with age. However, exposure in kestrels was typically greater than that in barn owls and tawny owls, despite what is thought to be a general similarity among the species in their diets. We discuss the relative importance of trophic pathways relative to other factors that may drive secondary exposure in predators, and confirm that species that feed on rats or other target species may be at most risk of exposure and poisoning.

7. South Atlantic Multi‐Site Calibration of Coral Oxygen Isotope Paleothermometer.

Abstract

Coral‐based stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) have been used as a proxy for sea surface temperature (SST) since the 1970s, and δ18O–SST calibration studies have been fundamental to assure robust and faithful SST reconstructions. Paleoclimatic studies based on corals from the tropical western South Atlantic (TWSA) are scarce, and the available coral species need to be calibrated to improve climate and environmental reconstructions. Siderastrea stellata, a slow‐growing coral, is a potential species to be explored as a coral archive in the TWSA. We provide the first multi‐site δ18O–SST calibration for the coral S. stellata from three locations at the TWSA: Todos os Santos Bay, Tamandaré and the Rocas Atoll. Pseudo‐coral δ18O calculations derived from gridded SSS and SST show that the contributions of SSS and SST to coral δ18O are expected to be different at each site. Weighted least squares linear regressions performed between the δ18O and SST generated the following calibrations equations: δ18O = −0.18 (±0.02) × SST (°C) + 1.90 (±0.47) for Todos os Santos Bay; δ18O = −0.18 (±0.02) × SST (°C) + 1.54 (±0.67) for Tamandaré; and δ18O = −0.16 (±0.03) × SST (°C) + 1.24 (±0.71) for the Rocas Atoll. The δ18O‐SST sensitivity of S. stellata from the TWSA is similar to that of other slow‐growing species of the genus and consistent with the expected δ18O‐SST sensitivity of other species reported in the literature. These calibrations will allow future SST reconstructions based on δ18O records from sub‐fossil and fossil S. stellata, an abundant species in the TWSA. Plain Language Summary: Corals continuously biomineralize calcium carbonate, storing environmental information within their exoskeletons in geochemical and isotopic records that span hundreds of years and making them suitable for high‐resolution climate reconstructions. The stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) found in corals are an important proxy for revealing past sea surface temperatures (SST) and sea surface salinities (SSS). However, to ensure that this proxy is applicable to reconstruct past SST, further δ18O–SST calibration studies are needed on various regions and species. In this study, we carried out three field work experiments to provide the first multi‐site δ18O–SST calibration of the slow‐growing coral Siderastrea stellata from the western South Atlantic. Despite the slow growth nature of S. stellata corals that poses a challenge to high temporal resolution sampling, we successfully provided new calibration equations for SST reconstruction from three different locations in the western South Atlantic. Our calibration equations can now be applied to reconstruct SST based on coral δ18O records from sub‐fossil and fossil coral cores. Abstract

We develop a multifractal random tilling that fills the square. The multifractal is formed by an arrangement of rectangular blocks of different sizes, areas and number of neighbors. The overall feature of the tilling is an heterogeneous and anisotropic random self-affine object. The multifractal is constructed by an algorithm that makes successive sections of the square. At each $n$-step there is a random choice of a parameter $\rho_i$ related to the section ratio. For the case of random choice between $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$ we find analytically the full spectrum of fractal dimensions.

Abstract

There is a significant energy transition in progress globally. This is mainly driven by the insertion of variable sources of energy, such as wind and solar power. To guarantee that the supply of energy meets its demand, energy storage technologies will play an important role in integrating these intermittent energy sources. Daily energy storage can be provided by batteries. However, there is still no technology that can provide weekly, monthly and seasonal energy storage services where pumped hydro storage is not a viable solution. Herein, we introduce an innovative energy storage proposal based on isothermal air compression/decompression and storage of the compressed air in the deep sea. Isothermal deep ocean compressed air energy storage (IDO-CAES) is estimated to cost from 1500 to 3000 USD/kW for installed capacity and 1 to 10 USD/kWh for energy storage. IDO-CAES should complement batteries, providing weekly, monthly and seasonal energy storage cycles in future sustainable energy grids, particularly in coastal areas, islands and offshore and floating wind power plants, as well as deep-sea mining activities.

Abstract

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o efeito da aplicação de diferentes soluções nutritivas e doses crescentes de potássio (K) na produção de massa seca e acúmulo de potássio na parte aérea de plantas de milho cultivadas em vasos contendo amostras de um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo em condições de casa de vegetação. Os tratamentos consistiram em três soluções nutritivas, seis doses de potássio (K) e um tratamento adicional que não recebeu aplicação de solução nutritiva e nem de K. O modelo quadrático de raiz é o mais indicado entre os avaliados para descrever a produção de massa seca de plantas de milho em função da dose de K. Abstract

The state of Rondônia has several soil classes, many of which have been subjected to conversion from forest to pasture by the use of fire, causing irreversible damage. Thus, studies are needed to assess changes in soil attributes, as a way to provide information that minimizes the impacts generated. Thus, the objective was to characterize, classify and evaluate the fragility of soils when used as pastures in a toposequence in the district of União Bandeirantes, Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. In the field, a toposequence was selected, where the profiles corresponding to each environment were selected based on the relief position, vegetation patterns (forest and pasture), pedological characteristics and parent material. In each environment, trenches were opened, which were morphologically characterized and samples were collected for physical-chemical analysis of the soil in the laboratory. The soils were classified according to the criteria established by the Brazilian Soil Classification System and by the World Reference Base for Soil Resources. Additionally, multivariate statistics were performed. In profiles P1 to P5, a monochromatic pattern was observed between the horizons. Soil profiles showed textural classes ranging from clayey loam to very clayey. Along the toposequence, two orders of soils, Latossolos and Plintossolos, were observed, which showed differences in the lower categorical levels. In the superficial horizons, modifications were observed in the attributes of granulometry, soil density, exchangeable bases and acidity components. By the multivariate analysis for the diagnostic horizons, three distinct groups were formed: Latossolos Amarelos, Plintossolos Pétricos and Latossolos Vermelhos. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Increasing species diversity is considered a promising strategy to mitigate the negative impacts of global change on forests. However, the interactions between regional climate conditions and species-mixing effects on climate-growth relationships and drought resistance remain poorly documented. In this study, we investigated the patterns of species-mixing effects over a large gradient of environmental conditions throughout Europe for European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), two species with contrasted ecological traits. We hypothesized that across large geographical scales, the difference of climate-growth relationships and drought resistance between pure and mixed stands would be dependent on regional climate. We used tree ring chronologies derived from 1143 beech and 1164 pine trees sampled in 30 study sites, each composed of one mixed stand of beech and pine and of the two corresponding pure stands located in similar site conditions. For each site and stand, we used Bootstrapped Correlation Coefficients (BCCs) on standardized chronologies and growth reduction during drought years on raw chronologies to analyze the difference in climate-tree growth relationships and resistance to drought between pure and mixed stands.We found consistent large-scale spatial patterns of climate-growth relationships. Those patterns were similar for both species. With the exception of the driest climates where pure and mixed beech stands tended to display differences in growth correlation with the main climatic drivers, the mixing effects on the BCCs were highly variable, resulting in the lack of a coherent response to mixing. No consistent species-mixing effect on drought resistance was found within and across climate zones. On average, mixing had no significant effect on drought resistance for neither species, yet it increased pine resistance in sites with higher climatic water balance in autumn. Abstract

Calycophyllum spruceanum (Benth) is a tree of the Amazon region popularly known as 'mulateiro', whose wood has multiple uses, from energy to folk medicine. Thus, it is extremely important to evaluate desirable characteristics, through quick methods that meet the principles of green chemistry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technique for the prediction of dry matter, carbon and ash contents and identification of parts of C. spruceanum trees. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression model applied within the spectral range of 400-2498 nm proved to be adequate to estimate the dry matter, carbon and ash contents in C. spruceanum sapwood and bark samples, with R2 above 0.90 in both calibration and validation. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis techniques when applied to the spectra were able to efficiently separate bark from sapwood. The results show that the NIR technique developed can be used in the determination of dry matter, carbon and ash contents in C. spruceanum, in addition to its discriminatory power in the separation of parts of the plant. Abstract

Avaliou-se o efeito de diferentes coberturas vegetais sobre composição química espectroscópica de ácidos húmicos (AH) em áreas de Latossolo e Argissolo Amarelo, em Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ). Foram estudadas três áreas: pastagem, cana-de-açúcar e floresta secundária. Foi determinado o teor de cinza, a composição elementar (CHNO) e espectros da região do UV-vis e do infravermelho (IV). Os AH apresentaram em média 46,5% de carbono (C) e 3,9% de nitrogênio (N), 5,6% hidrogênio (H) e 45,0% de oxigênio (O). A razão H:C apresentou valores entre 1,32 e 1,74, menores no pasto e maiores na floresta, e para a razão O:C, valores entre 0,66 e 0,88, menores no pasto e maiores na área de cana, porém semelhantes na cana e floresta. Pelos espectros do UV-vis observou-se relação E4/E6 variando de 4,5 a 7,0, menores no pasto e cana e maiores na floresta. Pelos espectros do IV verificou-se que os AH da floresta na área de Argissolo apresentaram uma banda de absorção em torno de 1540 cm-1, indicando a presença de deformação N-H ou estiramento C=N (amida secundária). Os AH da floresta e em especial sob Argissolo foram mais alifáticos, indicando a presença de compostos menos evoluídos em relação às outras coberturas. Abstract

A adsorção específica de fósforo nos minerais da fração argila do solo, como os oxi-hidróxidos de Fe e Al, é responsável pela diminuição da disponibilidade desse elemento para as plantas. No Brasil, a condição é estudada substancialmente em solos de textura média a muito argilosa, cuja atividade de adsorção é expressiva. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a capacidade máxima de adsorção de fósforo (CMAP) em solos de textura arenosa com fertilidade construída no bioma Cerrado. Foram selecionadas áreas com os solos representativos nos municípios de Luís Eduardo Magalhães (LEM/BA) e Guaraí (TO), com as seguintes coberturas vegetais: a) LEM: vegetação natural e algodão; b) Guaraí: vegetação natural e soja. Foram coletadas amostras de solo nas camadas de 0 cm - 20 cm e 60 cm - 80 cm, nas quais foram realizadas as análises químicas e físicas de rotina, análises relativas à adsorção de fósforo, como o Prem e a CMAP e o PESN. Os teores de Prem são maiores na camada de 0 cm - 20 cm para a região de LEM. A CMAP é pouco expressiva nos solos das duas regiões estudadas, tendo os solos de Guaraí maior potencial relativo de adsorção pelos maiores valores da razão CMAP/argila. Abstract

Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência de um fertilizante organomineral (FOM) granulado a partir da mistura de turfa e cloreto de potássio na produção de gramíneas, em comparação ao cloreto de potássio comercial. O experimento foi conduzido em vasos em casa de vegetação. A planta indicadora foi o milho (Zea mays cv. Ipanema) durante os três cultivos iniciais e braquiária (Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu) no quarto cultivo. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 x 6, com três repetições, sendo duas classes de solo (Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo (LVA) e Planossolo Háplico (SX)) duas fontes de K2O (KCl comercial e FOM) e seis doses de K2O (0, 15, 30, 45, 60 e 75 mg dm-3). Em todos os cultivos, a parte aérea das plantas foi coletada para obtenção da massa seca e do conteúdo de K no tecido. Nas condições estudadas, os fertilizantes proporcionaram resultados semelhantes em todos os cultivos analisados e no acumulado dos cultivos para a massa seca da parte aérea. As maiores diferenças no acúmulo de K e na produção de massa seca da parte aéreas foram proporcionadas pela aplicação das maiores doses de K2O, independente da fonte. As maiores doses de K2O em SX proporcionaram maior eficiência relativa de FOM, indicando o maior potencial da aplicação deste fertilizante em solos de textura arenosa. Abstract

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o impacto da aplicação de diferentes níveis de palhada da cana-de-açúcar sobre a agregação e distribuição de carbono orgânico (C) em classes de agregados de um Latossolo Vermelho, sob colheita mecânica em Paranavaí (PR). Para esse estudo, em novembro de 2014, após a colheita mecanizada de cana-planta (primeira colheita após o plantio), variedade RB-867515, foram aplicados sobre o solo as seguintes quantidades de palha: 0, 3,65, 7,55 e 14,85 Mg ha-1 que corresponderam, respectivamente, à manutenção em campo de 0, 25, 50 e 100% da palha. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, com 4 repetições. Aproximadamente um ano após a aplicação dos níveis de palha sobre o solo, amostras de solo foram coletadas na camada de 0-10 cm. Nessas amostras avaliou-se o diâmetro médio ponderado (DMP) dos agregados, a distribuição dos agregados nas classes de diâmetros 4-2, 2-1, 1-0,5, 0,5-0,25, e 0,25-0,105 e < 0,105 mm, por via seca, e o teor de C nessas classes com exceção da classe < 0,105 mm.Na distribuição dos agregados houve predominância da classe de agregados 0,25-0,105 mm, possivelmente devido a quantidade de areia fina (290 g kg-1) presente nesse diâmetro de peneira, contudo dentro dessa classe não verificou-se efeito significativo dos níveis de palha. As maiores deposições de palha sobre o solo (50 e 100 %) aumentaram a percentagem dos agregados na classe 4-2 mm (25,7 e 32,0 %, respectivamente) em relação aos tratamentos 0 e 25% (13,5 e 22,7 %, respectivamente), apresentando comportamento quadrático significativo. Esse mesmo efeito foi observado para os valores de DMP, com maiores valores nos tratamentos com 50 e 100% (1,65 e 1,60 mm, respectivamente) em relação aos tratamentos com 25 e 0% de palha (1,32 e 1,01 mm, respectivamente). Dentro de cada nível de palha, os teores de C nas classes de agregados apresentaram diferenças significativas entre si, com exceção do tratamento com 100% de palha, onde de maneira geral os valores foram maiores nas classes com diâmetro de 4-2 e 2-1 mm (12,5 e 12,4 g kg-1, respectivamente) e menores na classe 0,25- 0,105 mm (6,6 g kg-1). Assim, as principais conclusões foram, que a aplicação de 50 e 100% (7,55 e 14,85 Mg ha-1 ano-1) aumenta a agregação do solo, e que a aplicação de 50 % de palha sobre o solo também aumenta os agregados de maiores diâmetros (4-2 e 2-1 mm), os quais estão associados aos teores mais elevados de carbono orgânico do solo (14,4 e 13,2 g Kg-1, respectivamente), sendo o nível de palha mais adequado para se manter sobre a superfície do solo visando a manutenção da estrutura do solo. Abstract

A viticultura é geradora de renda tanto em nível mundial como nacional. Entretanto, todas as regiões produtoras no Brasil são afetadas pelo míldio (Plasmopara viticola), doença que pode causar sérios danos a cultura. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a resistência ao míldio de cultivares de uva introduzidas no norte fluminense. Para tanto foram avaliadas onze cultivares a saber, ?Rosalinda?; ?Itália?; ?Patrícia?; ?Kyoho?; ?Red Globe?; ?Roberta?; ?Rubi?; ?Niágara Rosada?; ?Isabel?; ?Moscatel de Hamburgo? e ?Romana?. As plantas foram conduzidas em sistema de ?latada?, no espaçamento 4,0 x 3,0 m, em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e quatro plantas por parcela. Abstract

Literature shows that spirituality is a helpful resource for patients to cope with illness, having a positive impact on their quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the psychometric qualities of the Spiritual and Religious Attitudes in Dealing with Illness (SpREUK) using a sample of 128 Portuguese Alzheimer's patients. Results showed that the instrument kept its original factorial structure, with a good adjustment and reliability in all subscales, and associations with quality of life and mindfulness. Therefore, the Portuguese version of the SpREUK has appropriate psychometric properties and is an important resource to assess spirituality in Alzheimer's patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
