Abstract

This paper presents a multi-layer perceptron model for the estimation of classrooms number of occupants from sensed indoor environmental data-relative humidity, air temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. The modelling datasets were collected from two classrooms in the Secondary School of Pombal, Portugal. The number of occupants and occupation periods were obtained from class attendance reports. However, post-class occupancy was unknown and the developed model is used to reconstruct the classrooms occupancy by filling the unreported periods. Different model structure and environment variables combination were tested. The model with best accuracy had as input vector 10 variables of five averaged time intervals of relative humidity and carbon dioxide concentration. The model presented a mean square error of 1.99, coefficient of determination of 0.96 with a significance of p-value < 0.001, and a mean absolute error of 1 occupant. Abstract

The asymptotic results that underlie applications of extreme random fields often assume that the variables are located on a regular discrete grid, identified with $\mathbb{Z}^2$, and that they satisfy stationarity and isotropy conditions. Here we extend the existing theory, concerning the asymptotic behavior of the maximum and the extremal index, to non-stationary and anisotropic random fields, defined over discrete subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$. We show that, under a suitable coordinatewise long range dependence condition, the maximum may be regarded as the maximum of an approximately independent sequence of submaxima, although there may be high local dependence leading to clustering of high values. Under restrictions on the local path behavior of high values, criteria are given for the existence and value of the spatial extremal index which plays a key role in determining the cluster sizes and quantifying the strength of dependence between exceedances of high levelsThe general theory is applied to the class of max-stable random fields, for which the extremal index is obtained as a function of well-known tail dependence measures found in the literature, leading to a simple estimation method for this parameter. Abstract

Background: Grief in parents has been described as a very intense long-lasting experience, characterized by deep sadness, and social isolation, therefore, the recommendation of scientific societies in pediatrics is to provide bereavement care to parents and relatives of deceased children who have previously been cared for by health professionals. Objetive: A bereavement workshop for parents is proposed as an intervention strategy, providing accompaniment to the families of deceased patients who received pediatric palliative care (PPC). Methods: This is a descriptive, qualitative, and exploratory study. Two focal group sessions were performed in 2019 with 23 families who were formal caregivers of pediatric patients in the Programa de Cuidando de ti (Program "Taking Care of You"), Cali, Colombia. These sessions, guided by the pediatric palliative care group. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: 60 families received the personalized letter of condolences with invitation to the workshop, 23 families attended the workshop. From the gratitude activity, families made 49 thank you cards, the following categories were highlighted: Communication, Hope, compassion, acceptance, humanization, learning, gratitude, active listening, coping strategies, regards, faith and humanization. Conclusion: Strategies that favor adequate emotional management of the grieving process should be promoted. This study reflects the perceptions of parents attending a bereavement workshop. It highlights the gratitude, feelings and reflections of the family members during the health process and the death of the child while receiving accompaniment by a pediatric palliative care team. Abstract

We propose a coefficient that measures the dependence among large values for spatial processes of maxima. Its main properties are: a) $k$ locations can be taken into account; b) it takes values in $[0,1]$ and higher values indicate stronger dependence; c) it is independent of the univariate marginal distributions of the random field; d) it can be related with the tail dependence and the extremal coefficients; e) it agrees with the concordance property for multivariate distributions; f) it has as a particular case the variogram from geostatistics; g) it can be easily estimated.

Abstract

For stationary sequences, under general local and asymptotic dependence restrictions, any limiting point process for time normalized upcrossings of high levels is a compound Poisson process, i.e., there is a clustering of high upcrossings, where the underlying Poisson points represent cluster positions, and the multiplicities correspond to cluster sizes. For such classes of stationary sequences there exists the upcrossings index $\eta,$ $0\leq \eta\leq 1,$ which is directly related to the extremal index $\theta,$ $0\leq \theta\leq 1,$ for suitable high levels. In this paper we consider the problem of estimating the upcrossings index $\eta$ for a class of stationary sequences satisfying a mild oscillation restriction. For the proposed estimator, properties such as consistency and asymptotic normality are studied. Finally, the performance of the estimator is assessed through simulation studies for autoregressive processes and case studies in the fields of environment and finance.

Abstract

The Multivariate Extreme Value distributions have shown their usefulness in environmental studies, financial and insurance mathematics. The Logistic or Gumbel-Hougaard distribution is one of the oldest multivariate extreme value models and it has been extended to asymmetric models. In this paper we introduce generalized logistic multivariate distributions. Our tools are mixtures of copulas and stable mixing variables, extending approaches in Tawn (1990), Joe and Hu (1996) and Foug\`eres et al. (2009). The parametric family of multivariate extreme value distributions considered presents a flexible dependence structure and we compute for it the multivariate tail dependence coefficients considered in Li (2009).

Spatial environmental processes often exhibit dependence in their large values. In order to model such processes their dependence properties must be characterized and quantified. In this paper we introduce a measure that evaluates the dependence among extreme observations located in two separated regions of locations of R^2. We compute the range of this new dependence measure, which extends the existing {\lambda}-madogram concept, and compare it with extremal coefficients, finding generalizations of the known relations in pairwise approach. Estimators for this measure are introduced and asymptotic normality and strong consistency are shown. An application to the annual maxima precipitation in Portuguese regions is presented.

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for two sub-vectors of a random vector with a multivariate extreme value distribution, corresponding to the limit distribution of the maximum of a multidimensional stationary sequence with extremal index, to be independent or totally dependent. Those conditions involve first relations between the multivariate extremal indexes of the sequences and secondly a coefficient that measure the strength of dependence between both sub-vectors. The notion of multivariate upcrossings index of a stationary sequence ${\bf{X}}=\{(X_{n,1},\ldots,X_{n,d})\}_{n\geq 1}$ is introduced and its main properties are derived, namely the relations with the multivariate extremal index and the clustering of upcrossings. Under asymptotic independence conditions on the marginal sequences of ${\bf{X}}$ the multivariate upcrossings index is obtained from the marginal upcrossings indices. For a class of stationary multidimensional sequences assumed to satisfy a mild oscillation restriction, the multivariate upcrossings index is computed from the joint distribution of a finite number of variables.
