Iron and zinc deficiencies in humans can cause serious health problems. Increasing the iron (IC) and zinc (ZC) concentrations in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grains using genetic breeding can be an effective strategy to prevent these problems. Thus, the aims of this study were i) to investigate the importance of genetic, environmental, and genotype-by-environment interaction effects on IC and ZC in common bean grains; ii) to select cultivars that have high mean values and phenotypic stability for IC and ZC, as well as high protein concentration (PC), high yield, and standard commercial grain quality; and iii) to investigate whether there is a genetic relationship between these traits. A total of 34 cultivars were evaluated in 19 different environments. Genetic variability was observed among the genotypes for all traits. For IC and ZC, the environmental effect represented most of the total variation (63% and 65%, respectively), and the effect of the G × E interaction was 18% for IC and 15% for ZC. The genetic correlations between IC, ZC, and PC were positive, indicating that the selection of one of these traits resulted in gains for the other. The genetic correlations between IC or ZC with yield or 100-grain weight were low or intermediate, but negative, indicating that it is important to evaluate these traits at all stages of breeding programs that focus on developing cultivars with high IC and ZC. The cultivar BRS Sublime, with the carioca grain type, combined high IC, ZC, and PC, high yield, and grains of commercial size. A deficiência de ferro e zinco, em humanos, causam sérios problemas de saúde. O aumento da concentração de ferro (CFe) e concentração de zinco (CZn) em grãos de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) por melhoramento genético pode ser uma estratégia eficaz para prevenir esses problemas. Assim, os objetivos deste estudo foram: i) verificar a importância do efeito genético, ambiental e da interação entre genótipos e ambientes para CFe e CZn, em grãos de feijão; ii) selecionar cultivares de feijoeiro-comum que associem altas médias e estabilidade fenotípica para CFe e CZn, além de alta concentração de proteína (CPt), alta produtividade e grãos com padrão comercial; iii) verificar se existe relação genética entre esses caracteres. Foram avaliadas 34 cultivares de feijão, em 19 ambientes. Houve variabilidade genética entre os genótipos para todos os caracteres. Para CFe e CZn, o efeito de ambientes representou a maior parte da variação total, 63% e 65%, respectivamente, o efeito de interação representou 18% para CFe e 15% para CZn. As correlações entre CFe, CZn e CPt foram positivas, o que indica que a seleção de um desses caracteres resulta em ganhos para o outro. As correlações entre CFe e CZn com produtividade e massa de 100 grãos, foram baixas ou intermediárias, mas negativas, o que indica a importância de avaliar esses caracteres em todas as fases do programa de melhoramento com foco no desenvolvimento de cultivares com altas CFe e CZn. A cultivar BRS Sublime, com grão tipo carioca, reuniu altas CFe, CZn, CPt, produtividade e grãos com tamanho comercial.

Common bean parents and populations resistant to white mold (WM, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) were selected based on estimates of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for WM severity in three field nurseries in Brazil. Twenty-seven populations were obtained by partial diallel crosses between parents from two groups: GI) three sources of partial resistance identified abroad and GII) nine Brazilian cultivars and elite lines. Populations were advanced in bulk up to the F6 generation. The overall mean of WM severity from combined analysis ranged from 2.83 to 5.03 (scale of 1 to 9 scores) in the F6 population. The score of the susceptible control BRS Requinte was 7.21. The GI parents K-59, in Oratórios, MG, and Viçosa, MG, and K-407 and PI204717, in Goianira, GO, contributed to increase resistance to WM. The most promising populations for obtaining elite lines resistant to WM were K-59/BRS Executivo, PI204717/BRS Campeiro, PI204717/Jalo Precoce, K-59/BRS Radiante, and K-407/BRS Cometa.

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of environmental and genotype x environment (GxE) interaction on the commercial quality and grain yield of common bean for the identification of new cultivars for the South Central and Central regions of Brazil, that combine high adaptability/stability for grain yield, sieve yield (SY) and 100-seed weight (100M). Sixty-two trials were performed in a randomised block design with three replicates in different sowing seasons in the South Central (Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Santa Catarina (SC), Paraná (PR), São Paulo (SP) and Mato Grosso do Sul (MS)) and Central (Goiás (GO) and Distrito Federal (DF)) regions in 2009 and 2010. In the trials, 16 “carioca”-seeded lines were evaluated, and grain yield, SY and 100M were collected. The data were then subjected to individual and joint analyses of variance and to adaptability and stability analyses using the Annichiarico method. Genetic variation was found between the lines for all three traits. Coefficient of determination estimates showed that the genotype effect was more important for commercial quality than for grain yield and that the environmental effect was equally important for all three traits, indicating that the highest possible number of environments should be tested. The highest-yielding lines in the Brazilian Central (CNFC 11954 and CNFC 11959) and South Central (CNFC 11948) regions were different, indicating the importance of GxE interactions for yield. However, the two best lines in the Central Region had low commercial grain quality. Thus, CNFC 11948 will be recommended as the new cultivar selected for broad adaptation because it combines high commercial quality with increased mean grain yield and stability in the South Central Region and better yield and stability than the main controls in the Central Region. O objetivo desse trabalho foi estudar o efeito ambiental e da interação genótipos × ambientes para produtividade e qualidade comercial de grãos na indicação de novas cultivares de feijoeiro-comum para as Regiões Centro Sul e Central do Brasil, identificando linhagens que reúnam alta adaptabilidade/estabilidade para produtividade, rendimento de peneira e massa de 100 grãos. Foram realizados 62 ensaios em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, em diferentes épocas de semeadura, nas Regiões Centro Sul (RS, SC, PR, SP e MS) e Central (GO e DF), nos anos de 2009 e 2010. Os ensaios foram compostos por 16 linhagens de grãos carioca e foram obtidos dados de produtividade, rendimento de peneira e massa de 100 grãos. Os dados foram submetidos a análises de variância individuais e conjuntas e a análises de adaptabilidade e estabilidade pela metodologia de Annichiaricco. Existe variação genética entre as linhagens para os três caracteres. As estimativas do coeficiente de determinação mostraram que o efeito de genótipos é mais importante para a qualidade comercial do que para produtividade de grãos e que o efeito ambiental é igualmente importante para os três caracteres, indicando que a avaliação deve ser realizada no maior número possível de ambientes. As linhagens superiores para produtividade nas Regiões Central (CNFC 11954 e CNFC 11959) e Centro-Sul (CNFC 11948) do Brasil são diferentes, indicando a importância da interação genótipos x ambientes para essa característica. Entretanto, as duas melhores linhagens na Região Central apresentaram baixa qualidade comercial dos grãos. Assim, a linhagem CNFC 11948 será indicada como nova cultivar de ampla adaptação, pois reúne ótima qualidade comercial de grãos, maior produtividade média e estabilidade na Região Centro-Sul e produtividade e estabilidade superiores as principais testemunhas na Região Central.

The objectives of this work were to study the genetic variability and the interaction between genotypes and environments for cooking time and protein content of bean grains as well as to identify elite lines of Carioca grain type with short cooking time, high protein content and high adaptability and stability for these two traits. Sixteen experiments were conducted in a complete randomized block design with three replications during the rainy, dry and winter seasons, in Goiás, Distrito Federal, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Bahia and Paraná States, in 2009 and 2010. Each trial was composed by 16 elite lines of Carioca grain type and the data of cooking time and protein content were obtained. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and to stability and adaptability analysis, according to the methodology proposed by Annichiarico. Genetic variability was found for cooking time and for protein content among Carioca common bean elite lines; however, for protein content this variability is lower. The environmental effect is important for the expression of these traits and is larger than the genetic effect. The interaction between genotypes and environments is important for cooking time and for protein content of common beans. The lines CNFC 11951 and CNFC 11962 presents short cooking time, high protein content and high stability and adaptability for both traits. RESUMO Os objetivos deste trabalho foram estudar a variabilidade genética e a interação entre genótipos e ambientes para o tempo de cocção e o teor de proteína de grãos de feijão, bem como identificar linhagens elites de feijoeiro-comum de grãos carioca com baixo tempo de cocção, alto teor de proteína e alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade para esses dois caracteres. Foram realizados 16 experimentos em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, conduzidos nas épocas de semeadura das águas, de seca e de inverno, nos estados de Goiás, Distrito Federal, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Bahia e Paraná, em 2009 e 2010. Os ensaios foram compostos por 16 linhagens elites de grão carioca e foram obtidos dados de tempo de cocção e de teor de proteína dos grãos. Os dados foram submetidos a análises de variância e de adaptabilidade e estabilidade, pela metodologia de Annicchiarico. Existe variabilidade genética tanto para tempo de cocção quanto para teor de proteína entre linhagens elites de feijão carioca; entretanto, para teor de proteína essa variabilidade é menor. O efeito ambiental é muito importante na expressão desses caracteres e é maior que o efeito genético. A interação entre genótipos e ambientes é importante para o tempo de cocção e para o teor de proteína de grãos de feijão. As linhagens CNFC 11951 e CNFC 11962 apresentam baixo tempo de cocção, alto teor de proteína e alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade para os dois caracteres.

This manuscript reports on the application of microsatellite markers to assess the effectiveness of controlled crosses and assess the genetic identity of seed samples from a same common bean cultivar (BRS Estilo). The DNA was extracted from leaf tissue collected from F1 plants and their parents as well as from seed samples of the cv. BRS Estilo by the alkaline lysis method. In all cases, genotyping was carried out with 24 microsatellite markers distributed in four multiplex panels with six markers each. Of the 392 F1 plants analyzed, obtained from 21 different biparental crosses, 325 (82.91%) was confirmed as real hybrids by the molecular analysis. The genetic analysis of the four BRS Estilo seed samples (two of certified seeds and two of saved seeds) detected 100.00% genetic identity with the samples used as control in only one certified seed sample.

The search for more productive varieties of beans, with lower production cost and adaptable to most technological conditions has been intensified. The objective of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the stability and adaptability of common bean lines of the carioca group in the final evaluation network in the Central Cerrado of Brazil, in 2005 and 2006. Twelve lines and four cultivars were evaluated in 23 environments. A completely randomized block design was used with three replications, with plots of four rows of four meters. Grain yield data were subjected to analysis of variance, stability and of adaptability by the methodologies of Lin and Binns, Annichiarico and visual assessment, respectively. The most stable and promising lines for recommendation as new cultivars were CNFC 10429, CNFC 10431 and CNFC 10408. A procura por cultivares de feijão mais produtivas, com menor custo de produção e adaptadas as mais variadas condições tecnológicas tem aumentado. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a estabilidade e adaptabilidade das linhagens de feijoeiro comum do grupo carioca em ensaios da rede de avaliação final de feijoeiro-comum no cerrado central do Brasil, anos de 2005 e 2006. Foram avaliadas 12 linhagens e quatro cultivares testemunhas em 23 ambientes. Foi empregado o delineamento de blocos completos casualizados com três repetições, sendo as parcelas constituídas de quatro linhas de quatro metros. Os dados de produtividade de grãos foram submetidos a análises de variância e de estabilidade e adaptabilidade pelas metodologias de Lin and Binns, Annichiarico e Visual. As linhagens CNFC 10429, CNFC 10431 e CNFC 10408 mostraram-se mais estáveis e promissoras para indicação como nova cultivar.

This work evaluated the effect of genotype by environment interaction in Andean common bean lines with white grains, in Central Southern Brazil, to identify lines with high agronomic performance, stability and adaptability, aiming to meet domestic demand and to increase the Brazilian participation in the foreign market of common bean. Nineteen trials with twelve Andean lines were conducted in 2007, 2008 and 2009, in Central Southern Brazil. Grain yield and other agronomic traits were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and of adaptability/stability using Annicchiarico and modified AMMI methods. Significant differences were found between lines for all traits evaluated. Genotype by environment interaction was important for lines with Andean origin and white seed. The utilization of weighted mean of absolute scores and yield with the AMMI results enabled the identification of the most stable and adapted lines. Lines Poroto Alubia, CNFB 16211, Ouro Branco and WAF 160 were stable and adapted, using both methods. CNFB 16211 line presented high agronomic performance, stability and adaptability and therefore this line may be a new cultivar. USWA 70 and WAF 75 lines presented grain size similar to that required by the foreign market and superior to the Brazilian cultivars, besides favorable agronomic traits, and thus these lines may be indicated as new cultivars. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar o efeito da interação genótipos x ambientes em linhagens de feijoeiro-comum de origem andina com grãos brancos na Região Centro-Sul do Brasil e identificar linhagens com alto potencial agronômico, estabilidade e adaptabilidade, visando atender a demanda interna e possibilitar a participação brasileira no mercado externo. Dezenove ensaios constituídos por 12 linhagens foram conduzidos em campo na Região Centro-Sul do Brasil nos anos 2007, 2008 e 2009. Avaliaram-se a produtividade de grãos e outros caracteres de importância agronômica. Os dados foram submetidos a análises de variância e de adaptabilidade/estabilidade pelos métodos de Annicchiarico e AMMI com modificações. Houve diferenças entre as linhagens para todos os caracteres avaliados. A interação genótipos x ambientes foi importante na avaliação de linhagens de origem andina com grãos brancos. A utilização da média ponderada pelos escores absolutos e da produtividade com os resultados da análise AMMI facilitou a identificação de linhagens mais estáveis e adaptadas. As linhagens Poroto Alubia, CNFB 16211, Ouro Branco e WAF 160 são estáveis e adaptadas utilizando-se as duas metodologias. A linhagem CNFB 16211 apresenta alto potencial agronômico, alta estabilidade e adaptabilidade sendo, portanto, possível a sua indicação como nova cultivar. As linhagens USWA 70 e WAF 75 apresentam tamanho de grão semelhante ao exigido pelo mercado externo e superior ao das cultivares brasileiras, além de apresentarem caracteres agronômicos favoráveis, sendo portanto possível a sua indicação como novas cultivares.
