We report 23 stars having Galactocentric velocities larger than $450~\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$ in the final data release of the APOGEE survey. This sample was generated using space velocities derived by complementing the high quality radial velocities from the APOGEE project in Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Data Release 17 (DR17) with distances and proper motions from Gaia early Data Release 3 (eDR3). We analyze the observed kinematics and derived dynamics of these stars, considering different potential models for the Galaxy. We find that three stars could be unbound depending on the adopted potential, but in general all of the stars show typical kinematics of halo stars. The APOGEE DR17 spectroscopic results and Gaia eDR3 photometry are used to assess the stellar parameters and chemical properties of the stars. All of the stars belong to the red giant branch, and, in general, they follow the abundance pattern of typical halo stars. There are a few exceptions that would deserve further analysis through high-resolution spectroscopy. In particular, we identify a high velocity Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) star, with Galactocentric velocity of 482 km\,s$^{-1}$. We explore the stellar content of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) Data Release 2 and show its potential to identify low-metallicity stars using the Stellar Parameters Estimation based on Ensemble Methods (SPEEM) pipeline. SPEEM is a tool to provide determinations of atmospheric parameters for stars and separate stellar sources from quasars, using the unique J-PLUS photometric system. The adoption of adequate selection criteria allows the identification of metal-poor star candidates suitable for spectroscopic follow-up. SPEEM consists of a series of machine learning models which uses a training sample observed by both J-PLUS and the SEGUE spectroscopic survey. The training sample has temperatures Teff between 4\,800 K and 9\,000 K; $\log g$ between 1.0 and 4.5, and $-3.1<[Fe/H]<+0.5$. The performance of the pipeline has been tested with a sample of stars observed by the LAMOST survey within the same parameter range. The average differences between the parameters of a sample of stars observed with SEGUE and J-PLUS, which were obtained with the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline and SPEEM, respectively, are $\Delta Teff\sim 41$ K, $\Delta \log g\sim 0.11$ dex, and $\Delta [Fe/H]\sim 0.09$ dex. A sample of 177 stars have been identified as new candidates with $[Fe/H]<-2.5$ and 11 of them have been observed with the ISIS spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope. The spectroscopic analysis confirms that $64\%$ of stars have $[Fe/H]<-2.5$, including one new star with $[Fe/H]<-3.0$. SPEEM in combination with the J-PLUS filter system has shown the potential to estimate the stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, $\log g$, and [Fe/H]). The spectroscopic validation of the candidates shows that SPEEM yields a success rate of $64\%$ on the identification of very metal-poor star candidates with $[Fe/H]<-2.5$., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomy & Astrophysics Journal

We report the validation of a recently proposed infrared selection criterion for symbiotic stars (SySts). Spectroscopic data were obtained for seven candidates, selected from the SySt candidates of Akras et al. (2019, MNRAS, 483, 5077) by employing the new supplementary infrared selection criterion for SySts in the VST/OmegaCAM Photometric H-Alpha Survey (VPHAS+). Five of them turned out to be genuine SySts after the detection of H$\alpha$, He II and [O III] emission lines as well as TiO molecular bands. The characteristic O VI Raman-scattered line is also detected in one of these SySts. According to their infrared colours and optical spectra, all five newly discovered SySts are classified as S-type. The high rate of true SySts detections of this work demonstrates that the combination of the H$\alpha$-emission and the new infrared criterion improves the selection of target lists for follow-up observations by minimizing the number of contaminants and optimizing the observing time., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, one table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Stardust grains that originated in ancient stars and supernovae are recovered from meteorites and carry the detailed composition of their astronomical sites of origin. We present evidence that the majority of large ($\mu$m-sized) meteoritic silicon carbide (SiC) grains formed in C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that were more metal-rich than the Sun. In the framework of the slow neutron-captures (the s process) that occurs in AGB stars the lower-than-solar 88Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios measured in the large SiC grains can only be accompanied by Ce/Y elemental ratios that are also lower than solar, and predominately observed in metal-rich barium stars - the binary companions of AGB stars. Such an origin suggests that these large grains represent the material from high-metallicity AGB stars needed to explain the s-process nucleosynthesis variations observed in bulk meteorites (Ek et al. 2020). In the outflows of metal-rich, C-rich AGB stars SiC grains are predicted to be small ($\simeq$ 0.2 $\mu$m-sized); large ($\simeq$ $\mu$m-sized) SiC grains can grow if the number of dust seeds is two to three orders of magnitude lower than the standard value of $10^{-13}$ times the number of H atoms. We therefore predict that with increasing metallicity the number of dust seeds might decrease, resulting in the production of larger SiC grains., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a new approach to study planetary nebulae using integral field spectroscopy. VLT@VIMOS datacube of the planetary nebula Abell 14 is analysed in three different ways by extracting: (i) the integrated spectrum, (ii) 1-dimensional simulated long slit spectra for different position angles and (iii) spaxel-by-spaxel spectra. These data are used to built emission-line diagnostic diagrams and explore the ionization structure and excitation mechanisms combining data from 1- and 3- dimensional photoionization models. The integrated and 1D simulated spectra are suitable for developing diagnostic diagrams, while the spaxel spectra can lead to misinterpretation of the observations. We find that the emission-line ratios of Abell 14 are consistent with UV photo-ionized emission, however there are some pieces of evidence of an additional thermal mechanism. The chemical abundances confirm its previous classification as a Type I planetary nebula, without spatial variation. We find, though, variation in the ionization correction factors (ICFs) as a function of the slit position angle. The star at the geometric centre of Abell 14 has an A5 spectral type with an effective temperature of Teff = 7909$\pm$135 K and surface gravity log(g) = 1.4$\pm$0.1 cm s$^{-2}$. Hence, this star cannot be responsible for the ionization state of the nebula. Gaia parallaxes of this star yield distances between 3.6 and 4.5 kpc in good agreement with the distance derived from a 3-dimensional photoionization modelling of Abell 14, indicating the presence of a binary system at the centre of the planetary nebula., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. We present chemical abundances for the elements carbon, sodium, and fluorine in 15 red giants of the globular cluster M 4, as well as six red giants of the globular cluster $\omega$ Centauri. The chemical abundances were calculated in LTE via spectral synthesis. The spectra analyzed are high-resolution spectra obtained in the near-infrared region around $\lambda$2.3$\mu$m with the Phoenix spectrograph on the 8.1m Gemini South Telescope, the IGRINS spectrograph on the McDonald Observatory 2.7m Telescope, and the CRIRES spectrograph on the ESO 8.2m Very Large Telescope. The results indicate a significant reduction in the fluorine abundances when compared to previous values from the literature for M 4 and $\omega$ Centauri, due to a downward revision in the excitation potentials of the HF(1-0) R9 line used in the analysis. The fluorine abundances obtained for the M 4 red giants are found to be anti-correlated with those of Na, following the typical pattern of abundance variations seen in globular clusters between distinct stellar populations. In M 4, as the Na abundance increases by $\sim$+0.4 dex, the F abundance decreases by $\sim$-0.2 dex. A comparison with abundance predictions from two sets of stellar evolution models finds that the models predict somewhat less F depletion ($\sim$-0.1 dex) for the same increase of +0.4 dex in Na.

We report on a high-resolution, spectroscopic stellar parameter and abundance analysis of a d' symbiotic star: the yellow component of StH\alpha190. This star has recently been discovered, and confirmed here, to be a rapidly rotating (vsini=100 km/s) subgiant, or giant, that exhibits radial-velocity variations of probably at least 40 km/s, indicating the presence of a companion (a white dwarf star). It is found that the cool stellar component has Teff=5300K and log g=3.0. The iron and calcium abundances are close to solar, however, barium is overabundant, relative to Fe and Ca, by about +0.5 dex. The barium enhancement reflects mass-transfer of s-process enriched material when the current white dwarf was an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. The past and future evolution of this binary system depends critically on its current orbital period, which is not yet known. Concerted and frequent radial-velocity measurements are needed to provide crucial physical constraints to this d' symbiotic system., Comment: 9 pages, 1 table, 3 figures.
