Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above $0.6\,$EeV.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. With a comparable exposure, our results in those regions are in good agreement with the expectations from an isotropic distribution., Comment: submitted to ApJ

- Abstract
This research delves into the multifaceted aspects influencing the adoption and utilization of ChatGPT among postgraduate students. Executed as a qualitative study involving participants from a prominent federal university, the primary objective was to discern students' nuanced perceptions of ChatGPT and their inclination to embrace it as an academic support tool. Based on Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, the study employed thematic analysis with a focus on critical dimensions. Results illuminate that students are motivated to amplify academic performance, boost productivity, and streamline time management, with ChatGPT emerging as a user-friendly solution. Peer and faculty influence further solidified its integration, evolving into a habitual tool, and the availability of a free version significantly contributed to its widespread adoption. This research highlights the growing prevalence of ChatGPT across diverse academic activities, encompassing exploratory research, programming, presentations, and email composition--however, varying opinions surface regarding its efficacy and limitations in scientific text production. The research findings, particularly in the context of technology assimilation in academia, hold significant relevance for educational policymakers and practitioners. They offer valuable insights that can help form policies that foster the judicious and effective integration of technology within educational settings.

- Abstract
An alternative to insert history of science (HS) in teacher formation programs is the use of concept maps (CM), which may be very useful to represent the historical elaboration dimension of science concepts, laws, and principles. This paper presents the results of a study that identifies the conceptions of pre-service physics teachers about the relationships between CM hierarchical organization and knowledge elaboration in HS. In the first stage of the research, the content analysis methodology was used to analyze and categorize the students' answers to questions concerning the relationships between CM hierarchical organization and HS. In the second stage, the answers of a different group of pre-service teachers were analyzed concerning the level of agreement with the categories previously elaborated. The students associated CM hierarchical organization with knowledge improvement, elucidation of the importance level of the concepts, and the relationships between more general and more specific contents. We point out that the use of CM in HS subjects may contribute to the pre-service teachers associating HS concepts not in a chronological way, but in hierarchical order, from the most general to the most specific ones.

- Abstract
In light of the increasing frequency of misleading information in social media regarding environmental issues, this study aimed to identify misleading information spread through TikTok videos and to discuss why such content is considered misleading, drawing on relevant literature. Hashtags with large numbers of views, such as #climatechange, #sustainability, #pollution, #biodiversity, #environmentalprotection, #environmentalissues, #energysource, and #environmentalproblems, were used for data collection through web scrapper called Apify (https://apify.com/). A total of 29 misleading videos were found. Content analysis was applied to identify and classify the topics and misleading claims. The topics of misleading videos, according to the most frequent mentions, were energy sources, followed by climate change, pollution, biodiversity, and environmental degradation. Among the misleading claims, videos related to pyramids as nonpollutant power plants and conspiracy related to pollution exhibited the highest frequency. The results show various misleading claims in videos related to environmental topics. Also, emphasized the importance of science education in addressing misleading information. In addition, the importance of an interdisciplinary approach for addressing environmental issues was reinforced.

- Abstract
Service-Learning (SL) is a powerful methodology to acquire competences and values in Higher Education. However, there is still no widespread use in Information and Computer Science (ICS) degrees where most of the subjects are focused on the development of theoretical and practical contents purely related to technical competences. In this paper, we show the structure of a SL methodology to develop Bachelor's Thesis: 1) definition of proposals considering all the competencies of the Bachelor's Thesis subject and the needs of entities; 2) development of applications using agile methodologies, and 3) assessment of the SL experience from students, entities and professors. We present an experience developed in the 2019/2020 academic year with two entities devoted to disfavoured people. The results show both the high technical and professional quality of the projects and the high satisfaction of entities and students. We hope that the development of applications with the collaboration of non-profit entities allows the acquisition of both specific and transversal competencies on ICS degrees at the same time enhancing the development of useful professional ones.

Computer Science - Software Engineering - Abstract
Intelligent assistants powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate program and test code with high accuracy, boosting developers' and testers' productivity. However, there is a lack of studies exploring LLMs for testing Web APIs, which constitute fundamental building blocks of modern software systems and pose significant test challenges. Hence, in this article, we introduce APITestGenie, an approach and tool that leverages LLMs to generate executable API test scripts from business requirements and API specifications. In experiments with 10 real-world APIs, the tool generated valid test scripts 57% of the time. With three generation attempts per task, this success rate increased to 80%. Human intervention is recommended to validate or refine generated scripts before integration into CI/CD pipelines, positioning our tool as a productivity assistant rather than a replacement for testers. Feedback from industry specialists indicated a strong interest in adopting our tool for improving the API test process., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to IEEE Software Special Issue on Next-generation Software Testing: AI-powered Test Automation

Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production of $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ processes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 $ TeV with 2016-2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<\eta_{\mu^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The integrated cross-section results are \begin{equation*} \sigma_{J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-}(2.0

A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $\phi_{s}$ and $|\lambda|$ results in \begin{align} \phi_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |\lambda_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. For the first time in a single measurement, $CP$ symmetry is observed to be violated in ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays with a significance exceeding six standard deviations., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://lbfence.cern.ch/alcm/public/analysis/full-details/3262/ (LHCb public pages)

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b\to\it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-(h=\pi, K)$, followed by $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{\Lambda} h^+$ with $\it{\Lambda}\to \it{p} \pi^-$ or $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{p}\it{K}^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 $\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ($C\!P$) asymmetries are measured, with no significant $C\!P$ violation observed. For the first time, the $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \to \it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-$ decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters $\alpha, \beta$ and $\gamma$ are obtained for $\it{\Lambda}_c^+$ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon $\it{\Lambda}$ decay is provided. The results deepen our understanding of weak decay dynamics in baryon decays., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2024-017.html(LHCb public pages)

The objective of pansharpening and hypersharpening is to accurately combine a high-resolution panchromatic (PAN) image with a low-resolution multispectral (MS) or hyperspectral (HS) image, respectively. Unfolding fusion methods integrate the powerful representation capabilities of deep learning with the robustness of model-based approaches. These techniques involve unrolling the steps of the optimization scheme derived from the minimization of an energy into a deep learning framework, resulting in efficient and highly interpretable architectures. In this paper, we propose a model-based deep unfolded method for satellite image fusion. Our approach is based on a variational formulation that incorporates the classic observation model for MS/HS data, a high-frequency injection constraint based on the PAN image, and an arbitrary convex prior. For the unfolding stage, we introduce upsampling and downsampling layers that use geometric information encoded in the PAN image through residual networks. The backbone of our method is a multi-head attention residual network (MARNet), which replaces the proximity operator in the optimization scheme and combines multiple head attentions with residual learning to exploit image self-similarities via nonlocal operators defined in terms of patches. Additionally, we incorporate a post-processing module based on the MARNet architecture to further enhance the quality of the fused images. Experimental results on PRISMA, Quickbird, and WorldView2 datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our method and its ability to generalize across different sensor configurations and varying spatial and spectral resolutions. The source code will be available at https://github.com/TAMI-UIB/MARNet.

Cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization observations indicate that in the best-fit $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter model of the Universe, the local geometry is consistent with at most a small amount of positive or negative curvature, i.e., $\vert\Omega_K\vert\ll1$. However, whether the geometry is flat ($E^3$), positively curved ($S^3$) or negatively curved ($H^3$), there are many possible topologies. Among the topologies of $S^3$ geometry, the lens spaces $L(p,q)$, where $p$ and $q$ ($p>1$ and $0

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
Using a sample of 2800 galaxy clusters identified in the Dark Energy Survey across the redshift range $0.20 < z < 0.60$, we characterize the hierarchical assembly of Bright Central Galaxies (BCGs) and the surrounding intracluster light (ICL). To quantify hierarchical formation we use the stellar mass - halo mass (SMHM) relation for the BCG+ICL system and incorporate the magnitude gap (M14), the difference in brightness between the BCG (measured within 30kpc) and 4th brightest cluster member galaxy within 0.5 $R_{200,c}$. The inclusion of M14, which traces BCG hierarchical growth, increases the slope and decreases the intrinsic scatter in the SMHM relation, highlighting that it is a latent variable within the BCG+ICL SMHM relation. Moreover, the correlation with M14 decreases at large radii from the BCG's centre. However, the stellar light within the BCG+ICL transition region (30kpc - 80kpc) most strongly correlates with the dark matter halo mass and has a statistically significant correlation with M14. As the light in the transition region and M14 are independent measurements, the transition region may grow as a result of the BCG's hierarchical two-phase formation. Additionally, as M14 and ICL result from hierarchical growth, we use a stacked sample and find that clusters with large M14 values are characterized by larger ICL and BCG+ICL fractions, which illustrates that the merger processes that build the BCG stellar mass also grow the ICL. Furthermore, this may suggest that M14 combined with the ICL fraction can be used as a method to identify dynamically relaxed clusters., Comment: 16 pages, 5 Figures, submitted to MNRAS on 8/30/2024

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A search for violation of the charge-parity $C\!P$ symmetry in the $D^+\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the $D^+$ and $D^-$ phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the $D^+_{s}\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay as a control channel. The $p$-value for the hypothesis of $C\!P$ conservation is $8.1\%$. The $C\!P$ asymmetry observables $A_{C\!P|S}^{\phi\pi^+} = (0.95 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.26_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_{C\!P|S}^{\overline{K}^{*0}K^+} = (-0.26 \pm 0.56_{ stat} \pm 0.18_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ are also measured. These results show no evidence of $C\!P$ violation and represent the most sensitive search performed through the phase space of a multibody decay., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://lbfence.cern.ch/alcm/public/analysis/full-details/1616 (LHCb public pages)

Physics - Chemical Physics - Abstract
The bond distance is the simplest and most obvious indicator of the nature of a given chemical bond. However, for rare chemistry, it may happen that it is not yet firmly established. In this communication, we will show that the formally-triple protactinium(V) mono-oxo bond is predicted longer than what was previously reported in the solid state and in solution, based on robust quantum mechanical calculations, supported by an extensive methodological study. Furthermore, additional calculations are used to demonstrate that the Pa-Ooxo bond of interest is more sensitive to complexation than the supposedly analogous U-Oyl ones, not only in terms of bond distance but also of finer bond descriptors associated with the effective bond multiplicity.

Understanding efficient modifications to improve network functionality is a fundamental problem of scientific and industrial interest. We study the response of network dynamics against link modifications on a weakly connected directed graph consisting of two strongly connected components: an undirected star and an undirected cycle. We assume that there are directed edges starting from the cycle and ending at the star (master-slave formalism). We modify the graph by adding directed edges of arbitrarily large weights starting from the star and ending at the cycle (opposite direction of the cutset). We provide criteria (based on the sizes of the star and cycle, the coupling structure, and the weights of cutset and modification edges) that determine how the modification affects the spectral gap of the Laplacian matrix. We apply our approach to understand the modifications that either enhance or hinder synchronization in networks of chaotic Lorenz systems as well as R\"ossler. Our results show that the hindrance of collective dynamics due to link additions is not atypical as previously anticipated by modification analysis and thus allows for better control of collective properties.

Quantum Physics ,Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
The problem of encoded quantum gate generation is studied in this paper. The idea is to consider a quantum system of higher dimension $n$ than the dimension $\bar n$ of the quantum gate to be synthesized. Given two orthonormal subsets $\mathbb{E} = \{e_1, e_2, \ldots, e_{\bar n}\}$ and $\mathbb F = \{f_1, f_2, \ldots, f_{\bar n}\}$ of $\mathbb{C}^n$, the problem of encoded quantum gate generation consists in obtaining an open loop control law defined in an interval $[0, T_f]$ in a way that all initial states $e_i$ are steered to $\exp(\jmath \phi) f_i, i=1,2, \ldots ,\bar n$ up to some desired precision and to some global phase $\phi \in \mathbb{R}$. This problem includes the classical (full) quantum gate generation problem, when $\bar n = n$, the state preparation problem, when $\bar n = 1$, and finally the encoded gate generation when $ 1 < \bar n < n$. Hence, three problems are unified here within a unique common approach. The \emph{Reference Input Generation Algorithm (RIGA)} is generalized in this work for considering the encoded gate generation problem for closed quantum systems. A suitable Lyapunov function is derived from the orthogonal projector on the support of the encoded gate. Three case-studies of physical interest indicate the potential interest of such numerical algorithm: two coupled transmon-qubits, a cavity mode coupled to a transmon-qubit, and a chain of $N$ qubits, including a large dimensional case for which $N=10$., Comment: unpublished

Nuclear Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The broad physics reach of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment covers rare phenomena beyond the direct detection of dark matter. We report precise measurements of the extremely rare decay of $^{124}$Xe through the process of two-neutrino double electron capture (2$\nu$2EC), utilizing a $1.39\,\mathrm{kg} \times \mathrm{yr}$ isotopic exposure from the first LZ science run. A half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2\nu2\mathrm{EC}} = (1.09 \pm 0.14_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.05_{\text{sys}}) \times 10^{22}\,\mathrm{yr}$ is observed with a statistical significance of $8.3\,\sigma$, in agreement with literature. First empirical measurements of the KK capture fraction relative to other K-shell modes were conducted, and demonstrate consistency with respect to recent signal models at the $1.4\,\sigma$ level., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
The tracking-by-detection paradigm is the mainstream in multi-object tracking, associating tracks to the predictions of an object detector. Although exhibiting uncertainty through a confidence score, these predictions do not capture the entire variability of the inference process. For safety and security critical applications like autonomous driving, surveillance, etc., knowing this predictive uncertainty is essential though. Therefore, we introduce, for the first time, a fast way to obtain the empirical predictive distribution during object detection and incorporate that knowledge in multi-object tracking. Our mechanism can easily be integrated into state-of-the-art trackers, enabling them to fully exploit the uncertainty in the detections. Additionally, novel association methods are introduced that leverage the proposed mechanism. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our contribution on a variety of benchmarks, such as MOT17, MOT20, DanceTrack, and KITTI., Comment: Accepted for the ECCV 2024 Workshop on Uncertainty Quantification for Computer Vision

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The rare electromagnetic $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is observed with a significance greatly exceeding the discovery threshold, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016-2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. The rate of this decay is measured relative to that of the $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-$ mode. Using the QED model for the four-muon decay in the efficiency estimation, its branching fraction is determined to be \begin{equation*} {\mathcal{B}}(J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-) = (1.13\pm0.10\pm0.05\pm0.01)\times 10^{-6}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-$ decay., Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://lbfence.cern.ch/alcm/public/analysis/full-details/3453 (LHCb public pages)

Competition between magnetism and superconductivity can lead to unconventional and topological superconductivity. However, the experimental confirmation of the presence of Majorana edge states and unconventional pairing currently poses a major challenge. Here we consider a two-dimensional lattice model for a superconductor with spin-orbit coupling and exchange coupling to randomly distributed magnetic impurities. Depending on parameters of the model, this system may display topologically trivial or nontrivial edge states. We map out the phase diagram by computing the Bott index, a topological invariant defined in real space. We then use machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict the Bott index from the local density of states (LDOS) at zero energy, obtaining high-accuracy results. We also train ML models to predict the amplitude of odd-frequency pairing in the anomalous Green's function at zero energy. Once the ML models are trained using the LDOS, which is experimentally accessible via scanning tunneling spectroscopy, our method could be applied to predict the number of Majorana edge states and to estimate the magnitude of odd-frequency pairing in real materials., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
We investigate the electronic properties of nanoribbons made out of monolayer Lieb, transition, and kagome lattices using the tight-binding model with a generic Hamiltonian. It allows us to map the evolutionary stages of the interconvertibility process between Lieb and kagome nanoribbons by means of only one control parameter. Results for the energy spectra, the density of states, and spatial probability density distributions are discussed for nanoribbons with three types of edges: straight, bearded, and asymmetric. We explore for different nanoribbon terminations: (i) the semiconductor-metallic transition due to the interconvertibility of the Lieb and kagome lattices, (ii) the effect of both nanoribbon width and inclusion of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping term on the degeneracy of the quasi-flat states, (iii) the behavior of the energy gap versus the nanoribbon width, (iv) the existence and evolution of edge states, and (v) the nodal spatial distributions of the total probability densities of the non-dispersive states., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
We study the 3.4-4.4$\mu$m fundamental rovibrational band of H3+, a key tracer of the ionization of the molecular interstellar medium (ISM), in a sample of 12 local (d< 400 Mpc) ultra/luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) observed with JWST/NIRSpec. The P, Q, and R branches of the band are detected in 13 out of 20 analyzed regions within these U/LIRGs, which increases the number of extragalactic H3+ detections by a factor of 6. For the first time in the ISM, the H3+ band is observed in emission in 3 of these regions. In the remaining 10 regions, the band is seen in absorption. The absorptions are produced toward the 3.4-4.4$\mu$m hot dust continuum rather than toward the stellar continuum, indicating that they likely originate in clouds associated with the dust continuum source. The H3+ band is undetected in Seyfert-like U/LIRGs where the mildly obscured X-ray radiation from the AGN might limit the abundance of this molecule. For the detections, the H3+ abundances, N(H3+)/N_H = (0.5-5.5)x10^-7, imply relatively high ionization rates between 3x10^-16 and >4x10^-15 s^-1, which are likely associated with high-energy cosmic rays. In half of the targets the absorptions are blue-shifted by 50-180 km/s, which are lower than the molecular outflow velocities measured using other tracers such as OH 119$\mu$m or rotational CO lines. This suggests that H3+ traces gas close to the outflow launching sites before it has been fully accelerated. We used nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium models to investigate the physical conditions of these clouds. In 7 out of 10 objects, the H3+ excitation is consistent with inelastic collisions with H2 in warm translucent molecular clouds (T_kin ~ 250-500 K and n(H2) ~ 10^(2-3) cm^-3). In three objects, dominant infrared pumping excitation is required to explain the absorptions from the (3,0) and (2,1) levels of H3+ detected for the first time in the ISM., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters. 6 pages, 5 figures. The Effective Sample Size (ESS) and Integrated Autocorrelation Time (IACT) are two popular criteria for comparing Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms and detecting their convergence. Our goal is to assess those two quantities in the context of an inverse problem in subsurface flows. We begin by presenting a review of some popular methods for their estimation, and then simulate their sample distributions on AR(1) sequences for which the exact values were known. We find that those ESS estimators may not be statistically consistent, because their variance grows linearly in the number of sample values of the MCMC. Next, we analyze the output of two distinct MCMC algorithms for the Bayesian approach to the simulation of an elliptic inverse problem. Here, the estimators cannot even agree about the order of magnitude of the ESS. Our conclusion is that the ESS has major limitations and should not be used on MCMC outputs of complex models.

This paper presents an experimental study on mmWave beam profiling on a mmWave testbed, and develops a machine learning model for beamforming based on the experiment data. The datasets we have obtained from the beam profiling and the machine learning model for beamforming are valuable for a broad set of network design problems, such as network topology optimization, user equipment association, power allocation, and beam scheduling, in complex and dynamic mmWave networks. We have used two commercial-grade mmWave testbeds with operational frequencies on the 27 Ghz and 71 GHz, respectively, for beam profiling. The obtained datasets were used to train the machine learning model to estimate the received downlink signal power, and data rate at the receivers (user equipment with different geographical locations in the range of a transmitter (base station). The results have shown high prediction accuracy with low mean square error (loss), indicating the model's ability to estimate the received signal power or data rate at each individual receiver covered by a beam. The dataset and the machine learning-based beamforming model can assist researchers in optimizing various network design problems for mmWave networks., Comment: In Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks (ICCCN), 2023

One of the roadblocks to employing two-dimensional (2D) materials in next generation devices is the lack of high quality insulators. Insulating layered materials with inert and atomically flat surfaces are ideal for high performance transistors and this has been exemplified with commonly used boron nitride. While the list of insulating 2D materials is limited, the earth-abundant phyllosilicates are particularly attractive candidates. Here, we investigate the properties of atomically thin biotite and muscovite, the most common and commercially important micas from the rock-forming minerals. From a group of five natural bulk samples, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy is used to classify exfoliated flakes into three types of biotite, including the phlogopite endmember, and two muscovites. We provide a catalog of RGB contrast values for exfoliated flakes ranging from bilayer to approximately 175 nm. Additionally, we report the complex index of refraction for all investigated materials based on micro-reflectance measurements. Our findings suggest that earth-abundant phyllosilicates could serve as scalable insulators for logic devices employing 2D materials, potentially overcoming current limitations in the field., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Giardia lamblia is a flagellate intestinal protozoan with global distribution causing the disease known as giardiasis. This parasite is responsable for 35.1% of outbreaks of diarrhea caused by contaminated water which and mainly affects children in whom it can cause physical and cognitive impairment. In this paper, we consider a model of population dynamics to represent the behavior of Giardia lamblia in vitro, taking into account its mutation characteristic that guarantees to the protozoan resistance to the drug metronidazole. Different from what is found in the literature, it is pursued as the control objective the extermination of the protozoan considering that the parameters of the model are uncertain and only the partial measurement of the state vector is possible. On these assumptions, a control law is designed and the stability of the closed-loop system is rigorously proved. Simulation and experimental results illustrate the benefits of the proposed population control method of Giardia lamblia., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 Table

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
A comparative vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy study conducted at ISOLDE-CERN of the radiative decay of the $^{229m}$Th nuclear clock isomer embedded in different host materials is reported. The ratio of the number of radiative decay photons and the number of $^{229m}$Th embedded are determined for single crystalline CaF$_2$, MgF$_2$, LiSrAlF$_6$, AlN, and amorphous SiO$_2$. For the latter two materials, no radiative decay signal was observed and an upper limit of the ratio is reported. The radiative decay wavelength was determined in LiSrAlF$_6$ and CaF$_2$, reducing its uncertainty by a factor of 2.5 relative to our previous measurement. This value is in agreement with the recently reported improved values from laser excitation.

In a class of heterogeneous random networks, where each node dynamics is a random dynamical system, interacting with neighbor nodes via a random coupling function, we characterize the hub behavior as the mean-field, subject to statistically controlled fluctuations. In particular, we prove that the fluctuations are small over exponentially long time scales and obtain Berry-Esseen estimates for the fluctuation statistics at any fixed time. Our results provide a mathematical explanation for several numerical observations, including the scaling relation between system size and frequency of large fluctuations, as well as system size induced desynchronization. To our best knowledge, these are the first characterizations of mean-field fluctuations on networks with a degree distribution that follows a power-law, a common feature for many realistic systems., Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures

In the paper Stability of Holomorphic Foliations with Split Tangent Sheaf one finds a study of the locus $\mathrm{Dec}$ where the tangent sheaf of a {\it family} of foliations in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb C}^n$ is {\it decomposable}, i.e. a sum of line bundles. A prime conclusion is an ``openness'' result: once the singular locus has sufficiently large codimension, $\mathrm{Dec}$ turns out to be open. In the present paper, we study the locus $\mathrm{LF}$ of points of a family of distributions where the tangent sheaf is {\it locally free}. Through general Commutative Algebra, we show that $\mathrm{LF}$ is open provided that singularities have codimension at least three. When dealing with foliations rather than distributions, the condition on the lower bound of the singular set can be weakened by the introduction of ``Kupka'' points. We apply the available ``openness'' results to families in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb C}^n$ and in $\mathcal B$, the variety of Borel subgroups of a simple group. By establishing a theorem putting in bijection irreducible components of the space of two-dimensional subalgebras of a given semi-simple Lie algebra and its nilpotent orbits, we conclude that the space of foliations of {\it rank two} on $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb C}^n$ and $\mathcal B$, may have quite many irreducible components as $n$ and $\dim \mathcal B$ grow. We also set in place several algebro-geometric foundations for the theory of families of distributions in two appendices.

We have investigated bound state solutions for a scalar particle described in the spacetime of a chiral cosmic string subjected to rotational effects in a Kaluza-Klein theory. We saw that combinations between the parameters that describe the generalized spacetime impose upper and lower limits for the radial coordinate leading to well-established boundary conditions.

The remarkable ability of natural proteins to conduct electricity in the dry state over long distances remains largely inexplicable despite intensive research. In some cases, a (weakly) exponential length-attenuation, as in off-resonant tunneling transport, extends to thicknesses even beyond 10 nm. This report deals with such charge transport characteristics observed in self-assembled multilayers of the protein bacteriorhodopsin (bR). About 7.5 nm to 15.5 nm thick bR layers were prepared on conductive titanium nitride (TiN) substrates using aminohexylphosphonic acid and poly-diallyl-dimethylammonium electrostatic linkers. Using conical EGaIn top contacts, an intriguing, mono-exponential conductance attenuation as a function of the bR layer thickness with a small attenuation coefficient $\beta \approx 0.8 \space {\rm nm}^{-1}$ is measured at zero bias. Variable-temperature measurements using evaporated Ti/Au top contacts yield effective energy barriers of about 100 meV from fitting the data to tunneling, hopping, and carrier cascade transport models. The observed temperature-dependence is assigned to the protein-electrode interfaces. The transport length and temperature dependence of the current densities are consistent with tunneling through the protein-protein and protein-electrode interfaces, respectively. Importantly, our results call for new theoretical approaches to find the microscopic mechanism behind the remarkably efficient, long-range electron transport within bR.

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
Deep neural networks have consistently represented the state of the art in most computer vision problems. In these scenarios, larger and more complex models have demonstrated superior performance to smaller architectures, especially when trained with plenty of representative data. With the recent adoption of Vision Transformer (ViT) based architectures and advanced Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), the total number of parameters of leading backbone architectures increased from 62M parameters in 2012 with AlexNet to 7B parameters in 2024 with AIM-7B. Consequently, deploying such deep architectures faces challenges in environments with processing and runtime constraints, particularly in embedded systems. This paper covers the main model compression techniques applied for computer vision tasks, enabling modern models to be used in embedded systems. We present the characteristics of compression subareas, compare different approaches, and discuss how to choose the best technique and expected variations when analyzing it on various embedded devices. We also share codes to assist researchers and new practitioners in overcoming initial implementation challenges for each subarea and present trends for Model Compression. Case studies for compression models are available at \href{https://github.com/venturusbr/cv-model-compression}{https://github.com/venturusbr/cv-model-compression}.

We present spectroscopic data for four metastable state clear-out transitions between 399 nm and 412 nm for all even long-lived isotopes of Yb$^+$ as well as their hyperfine structure in $^{171}$Yb$^+$. The strong $^2 \rm{D}_{3/2} \rightarrow {}^1[1/2]_{1/2}$ transition at 412 nm represents an attractive alternative for the standard 935 nm repumper used in cooling and trapping experiments, while the transition to the $^3[3/2]_{3/2}$ state at 411 nm clears out the $^2 $F$_{7/2}$ state, for which typically 638 nm or 760 nm are used. These two alternative transitions simplify the experimental setup by removing the need for infrared optics to cool and manipulate Yb$^+$ and may be of particular interest when considering integrated photonics solutions. We also present data for the transitions $^2 $D$_{3/2} \rightarrow {}^3[1/2]_{3/2}$ at 399 nm, and $^2 $D$_{3/2} \rightarrow {}^1[5/2]_{5/2}$ at 410 nm including decay branching ratios of the excited states., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Consider the family of semilinear parabolic problems \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} u_{t}(x,t) = \Delta u(x,t) - au(x,t) + f(u(x,t)), \,\,\, x \in \Omega_{\epsilon}, t > 0, \\ \frac{\partial u}{\partial N} (x,t) = g(u(x,t)), \,\,\, x \in \partial \Omega_{\epsilon}, t > 0, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $a > 0$, $\Omega$ is the unit square, $\Omega_{\epsilon} = h_{\epsilon}(\Omega)$, $h_{\epsilon}$ is a family of $C^{m}$ - diffeomorphisms, $m \geq 1$, which converge to the identity of $\Omega$ in $C^{\alpha}$ norm, if $\alpha <1$ but do not converge in the $C^{1}$ - norm and, $f,g: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ are real functions. We show that a weak version of this problem, transported to the fixed domain $\Omega$ by a ``pull-back'' procedure, is well posed for $0 <\epsilon \leq \epsilon_{0}$, $\epsilon_{0} > 0$, in a suitable phase space, the associated semigroup has a global attractor $\mathcal{A}_{\epsilon}$ and the family $\{ \mathcal{A}_{\epsilon} \}_{0 \, < \, \epsilon \, \leq \, \epsilon_{0}}$ converges as $\epsilon \to 0$ to the attractor of the limiting problem: \begin{equation*}\ \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} u_{t}(x,t) = \Delta u(x,t) - au(x,t) + f(u(x,t)), \,\,\, x \in \Omega, t > 0, \\ \frac{\partial u}{\partial N} (x,t) = g(u(x,t))\mu, \,\,\, x \in \partial \Omega, t > 0, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $\mu$ is essentially the limit of the Jacobian determinant of the diffeomorphism ${h_{\epsilon}}_{| \partial \Omega} : \partial \Omega \rightarrow \partial h_{\epsilon}(\Omega)$ (but does not depend on the particular family $h_{\epsilon})$.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The decays of the $\chi_{b1}(1P)$, $\chi_{b2}(1P)$, $\chi_{b1}(2P)$ and $\chi_{b2}(2P)$~mesons into the~$\Upsilon(1S)\mu^+\mu^-$ final state are observed with a high significance using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$. The newly observed decays together with the $\Upsilon(2S)\rightarrow \Upsilon(1S)\pi^+\pi^-$ and $\Upsilon(3S)\rightarrow \Upsilon(2S)\pi^+\pi^-$ decay modes are used for precision measurements of the mass and mass splittings for the hidden-beauty states., Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2024-025.html

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
This paper presents the development of an industrial fall detection system utilizing YOLOv8 variants, enhanced by our proposed augmentation pipeline to increase dataset variance and improve detection accuracy. Among the models evaluated, the YOLOv8m model, consisting of 25.9 million parameters and 79.1 GFLOPs, demonstrated a respectable balance between computational efficiency and detection performance, achieving a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.971 at 50% Intersection over Union (IoU) across both "Fall Detected" and "Human in Motion" categories. Although the YOLOv8l and YOLOv8x models presented higher precision and recall, particularly in fall detection, their higher computational demands and model size make them less suitable for resource-constrained environments.

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
Log-Euclidean distances are commonly used to quantify the similarity between positive definite matrices using geometric considerations. This paper analyzes the behavior of this distance when it is used to measure closeness between independent sample covariance matrices. A closed form expression is given for the deterministic equivalent of such distance, which asymptotically approximates the actual distance in the large observation regime (both sample size and observation dimension grow to infinity at the same rate). The deterministic equivalent can be used to analyze the performance of the log-Euclidean metric when compared to other commonly used metrics such as the Euclidean norm or the symmetrized Kullback-Leibler divergence.

This work explores the clustering of wireless users by examining the distances between their channel covariance matrices, which reside on the Riemannian manifold of positive definite matrices. Specifically, we consider an estimator of the Log-Euclidean distance between multiple sample covariance matrices (SCMs) consistent when the number of samples and the observation size grow unbounded at the same rate. Within the context of multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) wireless communication systems, we develop a statistical framework that allows to accurate predictions of the clustering algorithm's performance under realistic conditions. Specifically, we present a central limit theorem that establishes the asymptotic Gaussianity of the consistent estimator of the log-Euclidean distance computed over two sample covariance matrices.

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
Spicules are the thin hair/grass-like structures that are prominently observed at the chromospheric solar limb. It is believed that fibrils and rapid blueshifted and redshifted excursions (RBEs and RREs; collectively referred to as REs) correspond to on-disk counterparts of type I spicules and type II spicules, respectively. Our investigation focuses on observing the response of these REs alongside similar spectral features in the chromosphere, transition Region (TR), and corona, utilizing space-time plots derived from coordinated observations from Swedish 1 m Solar Telescope/H{\alpha}, Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), and Solar Dynamics Observatory. Our analysis reveals upflowing REs, promptly reaching temperatures characteristic of the TR and corona, indicating a multi-thermal nature. Similarly, downflowing features exhibiting similar spectral signatures over the disk display plasma motion from the corona to chromospheric temperatures, demonstrating a multithermal nature. In addition to distinct upflows and downflows, we observe sequential upflow and downflow along the same path, depicting a distinctive parabolic trajectory in space-time plots of observations sampling TR and various coronal passbands. Similar to isolated upflows and downflows, these REs also exhibit a multi-thermal nature throughout their trajectory. Furthermore, our results reveal a more intricate motion of the REs in which both upflow and downflow coexist at the same spatial location. On a different note, our analysis, utilizing coordinated IRIS spectral observations, shows spatio-temporal redshifts/downflows in both the TR and chromosphere, suggesting that at least subsets of the strong redshifts/downflows observed in TR temperature spectra result from the return from the upper atmosphere flow of plasma in the form of bundles of spicules or features exhibiting similar spectra.

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
Using 1533 type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the five-year sample of the Dark Energy Survey (DES), we investigate the effects of projected galactocentric separation between the SNe and their host galaxies on their light curves and standardization. We show, for the first time, that the difference in SN Ia post-standardization brightnesses between high and low-mass hosts reduces from $0.078\pm0.011$ mag in the full sample to $0.036 \pm 0.018$ mag for SNe Ia located in the outer regions of their host galaxies, while increasing to $0.100 \pm 0.014$ mag for SNe in the inner regions. In these inner regions, the step can be reduced (but not removed) using a model where the $R_V$ of dust along the line-of-sight to the SN changes as a function of galaxy properties. To explain the remaining difference, we use the distributions of the SN Ia stretch parameter to test whether the inferred age of SN progenitors are more varied in the inner regions of galaxies. We find that the proportion of high-stretch SNe Ia in red (older) environments is more prominent in outer regions and that the outer regions stretch distributions are overall more homogeneous compared to inner regions, but conclude that this effect cannot explain the reduction in significance of any Hubble residual step in outer regions. We conclude that the standardized distances of SNe Ia located in the outer regions of galaxies are less affected by their global host galaxy properties than those in the inner regions., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
In this paper, we theoretically investigate the deflection of light produced by a topologically charged Holonomy corrected Schwarzschild black hole. The study is carried out both in the weak field limit and in the strong field limit. We analytically deduced the expansions for light deflection in the two limits and, from them, we determined the observables in order to provide elements so that observational tools are able to identify these solutions. We model possible gravitational scenarios in order to verify the possible gravitational characteristics of the solution., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2309.05106

Under simple hypotheses on the nonlinearity $f$, we consider the fractional harmonic operator problem \begin{equation}\label{abstr}\sqrt{-\Delta+|x|^2}\,u=f(x,u)\ \ \textrm{in }\ \mathbb{R}^N\end{equation} or, since we work in the extension setting $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+$, $$\left\{\begin{aligned} -\Delta v +|x|^2v&=0, &&\mbox{in} \ \mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+,\\ -\displaystyle\frac{\partial v}{\partial x}(x,0)&=f(x,v(x,0)) &&\mbox{on} \ \mathbb{R}^{N}\cong\partial \mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+.\end{aligned}\right.$$ Defining the space $$\mathcal{H}(\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+)=\left\{v\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+): \iint_{\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+}\left[|\nabla v|^2+|x|^2v^2\right]dx dy<\infty\right\},$$ we prove that the embedding $$\mathcal{H}(\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+)\hookrightarrow L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^N)$$ is compact. We also obtain a Pohozaev-type identity for this problem, show that in the case $f(x,u)=|u|^{p^*-2}u$ the problem has no non-trivial solution, compare the extremal attached to this problem with the one of the space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+)$, prove that the solution $u$ of our problem belongs to $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for all $p\in [2,\infty]$ and satisfy the polynomial decay $|u(x)|\leq C/|x|$ for any $|x|>M$. Finally, we prove the existence of a solution to a superlinear critical problem in the case $f(x,u)=|u|^{2^*-2}u+\lambda |u|^{q-1}$, $1

This work introduces Dareplane, a modular and broad technology agnostic open source software platform for brain-computer interface research with an application focus on adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS). While the search for suitable biomarkers to inform aDBS has provided rich results over the last two decades, development of control strategies is not progressing at the same pace. One difficulty for investigating control approaches resides with the complex setups required for aDBS experiments. The Dareplane platform supports aDBS setups, and more generally brain computer interfaces, by providing a modular, technology-agnostic, and easy-to-implement software platform to make experimental setups more resilient and replicable. The key features of the platform are presented and the composition of modules into a full experimental setup is discussed in the context of a Python-based orchestration module. The performance of a typical experimental setup on Dareplane for aDBS is evaluated in three benchtop experiments, covering (a) an easy-to-replicate setup using an Arduino microcontroller, (b) a setup with hardware of an implantable pulse generator, and (c) a setup using an established and CE certified external neurostimulator. Benchmark results are presented for individual processing steps and full closed-loop processing. The results show that the microcontroller setup in (a) provides timing comparable to the realistic setups in (b) and (c). The Dareplane platform was successfully used in a total of 19 open-loop DBS sessions with externalized DBS and electrocorticography (ECoG) leads. In addition, the full technical feasibility of the platform in the aDBS context is demonstrated in a first closed-loop session with externalized leads on a patient with Parkinson's disease receiving DBS treatment.

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
The present state of cosmology is facing a crisis where there is a fundamental disagreement in measurements of the Hubble constant ($H_{0}$), with significant tension between the early and late universe methods. Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are important to measuring $H_{0}$ through the astronomical distance ladder. However, there remains potential to better standardise SN Ia light curves by using known dependencies on host galaxy properties after the standard light curve width and colour corrections have been applied to the peak SN Ia luminosities. To explore this, we use the 5-year photometrically identified SNe Ia sample obtained by the Dark Energy Survey, along with host galaxy spectra obtained by the Australian Dark Energy Survey. Using host galaxy spectroscopy, we find a significant trend with the equivalent width (EW) of the [OII] $\lambda\lambda$ 3727, 29 doublet, a proxy for specific star formation rate, and Hubble residuals. We find that the correlation with [OII] EW is a powerful alternative to the commonly used mass step after initial light curve corrections. We applied our [OII] EW correction to a sample of 20 SN Ia hosted by calibrator galaxies observed using WiFeS, and examined the impact on both the SN Ia absolute magnitude and $H_{0}$. We then explored different [OII] EW corrections and found $H_{0}$ values ranging between $72.80$ to $73.28~\mathrm{km} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. Notably, even after using an additional [OII] EW correction, the impact of host galaxy properties in standardising SNe Ia appears limited in reducing the current tension ($\sim$5$\sigma$) with the Cosmic Microwave Background result for $H_{0}$., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures.
