We present 3D general-relativistic neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations of asymmetric binary neutron star mergers producing long-lived neutron stars remnants and spanning a fraction of their cooling time scale. Two binaries with mass ratios of $1.77$ and $1.49$ described by a stiff and a soft microphysical equation of state are considered. The mergers are characterized by significant tidal disruption with neutron rich material forming a massive disc around the remnant. The latter develops a one-armed dynamics that is imprinted in the emitted kilo-Hertz gravitational waves. Angular momentum transport to the disc is initially driven by spiral-density waves and enhanced by turbulent viscosity and neutrino heating on longer timescales. The mass outflows are composed by neutron-rich dynamical ejecta of mass ${\sim}10^{-3}-10^{-2}M_\odot$ followed by a persistent spiral-wave/neutrino-driven wind of ${\gtrsim}10^{-2}M_\odot$ with material spanning a wide range of electron fractions, ${\sim}0.1-0.55$. For the stiff EOS and largest mass ratio binary, tidal dynamical ejecta have fast tails up to velocities ${\sim}0.8$~c. The outflows are further evolved to days timescale using 2D ray-by-ray radiation-hydrodynamics simulations that include an online nuclear network. We find complete $r$-process yields and identify the production of $^{56}$Ni and the subsequent decay chain to $^{56}$Co and $^{56}$Fe. Synthetic kilonova light curves predict an extended (near-) infrared peak a few days postmerger originating from $r$-processes in the neutron-rich/high-opacity ejecta and a UV/optical peak a few hours postmerger originating from weak $r$-processes in the faster ejecta components. Additionally, the fast tail of tidal origin generates kilonova afterglows potentially detectable in radio and X band on a few to ten years timescale. Understanding the details of $r$-process nucleosynthesis in binary neutron star mergers (BNSMs) ejecta is key to interpret kilonovae observations and to identify the role of BNSMs in the origin of heavy elements. We present a self-consistent 2-dimensional (ray-by-ray) radiation-hydrodynamic evolution of BNSM ejecta with an online nuclear network (NN) up to the days timescale. For the first time, an initial numerical-relativity ejecta profile composed of the dynamical component, spiral-wave and disk winds is evolved including detailed $r$-process reactions and nuclear heating effects. A simple model for the jet energy deposition is also included. Our simulation highlights that the commonly assumed approach of relating the final nucleosynthesis yields to the initial thermodynamic profile of the ejecta can lead to inaccurate predictions. We also find significant deviations (up to four orders of magnitudes) in the abundance evolution of several analyzed elements compared to previous predictions employing the NN in post-processing. The presence of a jet affects elements production only in the innermost part of the polar ejecta, and it does not alter the global nucleosynthesis results. Overall, our analysis shows that employing an online NN is highly desiderable in order to obtain reliable predictions of $r$-process nucleosynthesis and ejecta evolution.

We present a Bayesian framework for joint and coherent analyses of multimessenger binary neutron star signals. The method, implemented in our bajes infrastructure, incorporates a joint likelihood for multiple datasets, support for various semi-analytical kilonova models and numerical-relativity (NR) informed relations for the mass ejecta, as well as a technique to include and marginalize over modeling uncertainties. As a first application, we analyze the gravitational-wave GW170817 and the kilonova AT2017gfo data. These results are then combined with the most recent X-ray pulsars analyses of PSR J0030+0451 and PSR J0740+6620 to obtain EOS constraints.Various constraints on the mass-radius diagram and neutron star properties are then obtained by resampling over a set of ten million parametrized EOS built under minimal assumptions. We find that a joint and coherent approach improves the inference of the extrinsic parameters (distance) and, among the instrinc parameters, the mass ratio. The inclusion of NR informed relations strongly improves over the case of using an agnostic prior on the intrinsic parameters. Comparing Bayes factors, we find that the two observations are better explained by the common source hypothesis only by assuming NR-informed relations. These relations break some of the degeneracies in the employed kN models. The EOS inference folding-in PSR J0952-0607 minimum-maximum mass, PSR J0030+0451 and PSR J0740+6620 data constrains, among other quantities, the neutron star radius to $R_{1.4}={12.30}^{+0.81}_{-0.56}$ km ($R_{1.4}={13.20}^{+0.91}_{-0.90}$ km) and the maximum mass to $M_{max}={2.28}^{+0.25}_{-0.17}~{\rm M_\odot}$ ($M_{max}={2.32}^{+0.30}_{-0.19}~{\rm M_\odot}$) where the ST+PDT (PDT-U) analysis of Vinciguerra et a (2023) for PSR J0030+0451 is employed. Hence, the systematics on PSR J0030+0451 data reduction currently dominate the mass-radius diagram constraints.

Accretion disks formed in binary neutron star mergers play a central role in many astrophysical processes of interest, including the launching of relativistic jets or the ejection of neutron-rich matter hosting heavy element nucleosynthesis. In this work we analyze in detail the properties of accretion disks from 44 ab initio binary neutron star merger simulations for a large set of nuclear equations of state, binary mass ratios and remnant fates, with the aim of furnishing reliable initial conditions for disk simulations and a comprehensive characterization of their properties. We find that the disks have a significant thermal support, with an aspect ratio decreasing with the mass ratio of the binary from $\sim 0.7$ to 0.3. Even if the disk sample spans a broad range in mass and angular momentum, their ratio is independent from the equation of state and from the mass ratio. This can be traced back to the rotational profile of the disc, characterized by a constant specific angular momentum (as opposed to a Keplerian one) of $3-5 \times 10^{16} \rm ~ cm^2~s^{-1}$. The profiles of the entropy per baryon and of the electron fraction depend on the mass ratio of the binary. For more symmetric binaries, they follow a sigmoidal distribution as a function of the rest mass density, for which we provide a detailed description and a fit. The disk properties discussed in this work can be used as a robust set of initial conditions for future long-term simulations of accretion disks from binary neutron star mergers, posing the basis for a progress in the quantitative study of the outflow properties.

We study the ringdown signal of black holes formed in prompt-collapse binary neutron star mergers. We analyze data from $47$ numerical relativity simulations. We show that the $(\ell=2,m=2)$ and $(\ell=2,m=1)$ multipoles of the gravitational wave signal are well fitted by decaying damped exponentials, as predicted by black-hole perturbation theory. We show that the ratio of the amplitude in the two modes depends on the progenitor binary mass ratio $q$ and reduced tidal parameter $\tilde\Lambda$. Unfortunately, the numerical uncertainty in our data is too large to fully quantify this dependency. If confirmed, these results will enable novel tests of general relativity in the presence of matter with next-generation gravitational-wave observatories., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. The recent detection of the live isotopes $^{60}{\rm Fe}$ and $^{244}{\rm Pu}$ in deep ocean sediments dating back to the past 3-4 Myr poses a serious challenge to the identification of their production site(s). While $^{60}{\rm Fe}$ is usually attributed to standard core-collapse supernovae, actinides are r-process nucleosynthesis yields, which are believed to be synthesized in rare events, such as special classes of supernovae or binary mergers involving at least one neutron star. Previous works concluded that a single binary neutron star merger cannot explain the observed isotopic ratio. In this work, we consider a set of numerical simulations of binary neutron star mergers producing long-lived massive remnants expelling both dynamical and spiral-wave wind ejecta. The latter, due to a stronger neutrino irradiation, also produce iron-group elements. Assuming that large-scale mixing is inefficient before the fading of the kilonova remnant and that the spiral-wave wind is sustained over a 100-200 ms timescale, the ejecta emitted at mid-high latitudes provide a $^{244}{\rm Pu}$ over $^{60}{\rm Fe}$ ratio compatible with observations. The merger could have happened 80-150 pc away from the Earth and between 3.5 and 4.5 Myr ago. We also compute expected isotopic ratios for eight other live radioactive nuclides showing that the proposed binary neutron star merger scenario is distinguishable from other scenarios proposed in the literature., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

After GW170817, kilonovae have become of great interest for the astronomical, astrophysics and nuclear physics communities, due to their potential in revealing key information on the compact binary merger from which they emerge, such as the fate of the central remnant or the composition of the expelled material. Therefore, the landscape of models employed for their analysis is rapidly evolving, with multiple approaches being used for different purposes. In this paper, we present xkn, a semi-analytic framework which predicts and interprets the bolometric luminosity and the broadband light curves of such transients. xkn models the merger ejecta structure accounting for different ejecta components and non-spherical geometries. In addition to light curve models from the literature based on time scale and random-walk arguments, it implements a new model, xkn-diff, which is grounded on a solution of the radiative transfer equation for homologously expanding material. In order to characterize the variety of the ejecta conditions, it employs time and composition dependent heating rates, thermalization efficiencies and opacities. We compare xkn light curves with reference radiative transfer calculations, and we find that xkn-diff significantly improves over previous semi-analytic prescriptions. We study out-of-thermodynamic equilibrium effects in neutron star mergers with 3D general-relativistic neutrino-radiation large-eddy simulations. During merger, the cores of the neutron stars remain cold ($T \sim$ a few MeV) and out of thermodynamic equilibrium with trapped neutrinos originating from the hot collisional interface between the stars. However, within ${\sim}2{-}3$ milliseconds matter and neutrinos reach equilibrium everywhere in the remnant. Our results show that dissipative effects, such as bulk viscosity, if present, are only active for a short window of time after the merger.

It is widely believed that the binary neutron star merger GW190425 produced a black hole promptly upon merger. Motivated by the potential association with the fast radio burst FRB 20190425A, which took place 2.5~hours after the merger, we revisit the question of the outcome of GW190425 by means of numerical relativity simulations. We show that current laboratory and astrophysical constraints on the equation of state of dense matter do not rule out the formation of a long-lived remnant. However, the formation of a stable remnant would have produced a bright kilonova, in tension with upper limits by ZTF at the location and time of FRB 20190425A. Moreover, the ejecta would have been optically thick to radio emission for days to months, preventing a putative FRB from propagating out. The predicted dispersion measure is also several orders of magnitude larger than that observed for FRB 20190425A. Our results indicate that FRB 20190425A and GW190425 are not associated. However, we cannot completely rule out the formation of a long-lived remnant, due to the incomplete coverage of the relevant sky regions. More observations of GW190425-like events, including potential upper limit, have the potential to constrain nuclear physics. To this aim, it is important that follow-up observational campaigns of gravitational wave events are informed by the properties of the source, such as their chirp mass, and we urge the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration to promptly release them publicly., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted to MNRAS

A direct detection of black hole formation in neutron star mergers would provide invaluable information about matter in neutron star cores and finite temperature effects on the nuclear equation of state. We study black hole formation in neutron star mergers using a set of 190 numerical relativity simulations consisting of long-lived and black-hole-forming remnants. The postmerger gravitational-wave spectrum of a long-lived remnant has greatly reduced power at a frequency $f$ greater than $f_{\rm peak}$, for $f \gtrsim 4\,\rm kHz$, with $f_{\rm peak} \in [2.5, 4]\,\rm kHz$. On the other hand, black-hole-forming remnants exhibit excess power in the same large $f$ region and manifest exponential damping in the time domain characteristic of a quasinormal mode. We demonstrate that the gravitational-wave signal from a collapsed remnant is indeed a quasinormal ringing. We report on the opportunity for direct detections of black hole formation with next-generation gravitational-wave detectors such as Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope and set forth the tantalizing prospect of such observations up to a distance of 100 Mpc for an optimally oriented and located source with an SNR of 4.

We present a 3D general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a short-lived neutron star remnant formed in the aftermath of a binary neutron star merger. The simulation uses an M1 neutrino transport scheme to track neutrino-matter interactions and is well-suited to studying the resulting nucleosynthesis and kilonova emission. We find that the ejecta in our simulations under-produce $r$-process abundances beyond the second $r$-process peak. For sufficiently long-lived remnants, these outflows \textit{alone} can produce blue kilonovae, including the blue kilonova component observed for AT2017gfo., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJL

The Einstein Telescope (ET), the European project for a third-generation gravitational-wave detector, has a reference configuration based on a triangular shape consisting of three nested detectors with 10 km arms, where in each arm there is a `xylophone' configuration made of an interferometer tuned toward high frequencies, and an interferometer tuned toward low frequencies and working at cryogenic temperature. Here, we examine the scientific perspectives under possible variations of this reference design. We perform a detailed evaluation of the science case for a single triangular geometry observatory, and we compare it with the results obtained for a network of two L-shaped detectors (either parallel or misaligned) located in Europe, considering different choices of arm-length for both the triangle and the 2L geometries. We also study how the science output changes in the absence of the low-frequency instrument, both for the triangle and the 2L configurations. We examine a broad class of simple `metrics' that quantify the science output, related to compact binary coalescences, multi-messenger astronomy and stochastic backgrounds, and we then examine the impact of different detector designs on a more specific set of scientific objectives., Comment: 197 pages, 73 figures. v2: corrections in the part on the sensitivity to stochastic backgrounds. We present the second data release of gravitational waveforms from binary neutron star merger simulations performed by the Computational Relativity (CoRe) collaboration. The current database consists of 254 different binary neutron star configurations and a total of 590 individual numerical-relativity simulations using various grid resolutions. The released waveform data contain the strain and the Weyl curvature multipoles up to $\ell=m=4$. They span a significant portion of the mass, mass-ratio,spin and eccentricity parameter space and include targeted configurations to the events GW170817 and GW190425. CoRe simulations are performed with 18 different equations of state, seven of which are finite temperature models, and three of which account for non-hadronic degrees of freedom. About half of the released data are computed with high-order hydrodynamics schemes for tens of orbits to merger; the other half is computed with advanced microphysics. We showcase a standard waveform error analysis and discuss the accuracy of the database in terms of faithfulness. We present ready-to-use fitting formulas for equation of state-insensitive relations at merger (e.g. merger frequency), luminosity peak, and post-merger spectrum., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures

We present a systematic numerical relativity study of the impact of different treatment of microphysics and grid resolution in binary neutron star mergers. We consider series of simulations at multiple resolutions comparing hydrodynamics, neutrino leakage scheme, leakage augmented with the M0 scheme and the more consistent M1 transport scheme. Additionally, we consider the impact of a sub-grid scheme for turbulent viscosity. We find that viscosity helps to stabilise the remnant against gravitational collapse but grid resolution has a larger impact than microphysics on the remnant's stability. The gravitational wave (GW) energy correlates with the maximum remnant density, that can be thus inferred from GW observations. M1 simulations shows the emergence of a neutrino trapped gas that locally decreases the temperature a few percent when compared to the other simulation series. This out-of-thermodynamics equilibrium effect does not alter the GW emission at the typical resolutions considered for mergers. Different microphysics treatments impact significantly mass, geometry and composition of the remnant's disc and ejecta. M1 simulations show systematically larger proton fractions. The different ejecta compositions reflect into the nucleosynthesis yields, that are robust only if both neutrino emission and absorption are simulated. Synthetic kilonova light curves calculated by means of spherically-symmetric radiation-hydrodynamics evolutions up to 15 days post-merger are mostly sensitive to ejecta's mass and composition; they can be reliably predicted only including the various ejecta components. We conclude that advanced microphysics in combination with resolutions higher than current standards appear essential for robust long-term evolutions and astrophysical predictions.

In the upcoming years, present and next-generation gravitational wave observatories will detect a larger number of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers with increasing accuracy. In this context, improving BNS merger numerical simulations is crucial to correctly interpret the data and constrain the equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars (NSs). State-of-the-art simulations of BNS mergers do not include muons. However, muons are known to be relevant in the microphysics of cold NSs and are expected to have a significant role in mergers, where the typical thermodynamic conditions favour their production. Our work is aimed at investigating the impact of muons on the merger remnant. We post-process the outcome of four numerical relativity simulations of BNS mergers performed with three different baryonic EOSs and two mass ratios considering the first $15$ milliseconds after merger. We compute the abundance of muons in the remnant and analyse how muons affect the trapped neutrino component and the fluid pressure. We find that depending on the baryonic EOS, the net fraction of muons is between $30 \%$ and $70 \%$ the net fraction of electrons. Muons change the flavour hierarchy of trapped (anti-)neutrinos such that deep inside the remnant, muon anti-neutrinos are the most abundant, followed by electron anti-neutrinos. Finally, muons and trapped neutrinos modify the neutron-to-proton ratio, affecting the remnant pressure by up to $7\%$ when compared with calculations neglecting them. This work demonstrates that muons have a non-negligible effect on the outcome of BNS merger simulations, and they should be included to improve the accuracy of a simulation., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

We present ${\tt NRPMw}$, an analytical model of gravitational-waves from neutron star merger remnants informed using 618 numerical relativity (NR) simulations. ${\tt NRPMw}$ is designed in the frequency domain using a combination of complex Gaussian wavelets. The wavelet's parameters are calibrated to equations of state (EOS) insensitive relations from NR data. The NR simulations are computed with 21 EOS (7 of which are finite-temperature microphysical models, and 3 of which contain quark phase transitions or hyperonic degrees of freedom) and span total binary masses $M\in[2.4,3.4]~{\rm M}_\odot$, mass ratios up to $q=2$, and (nonprecessing) dimensionless spins magnitudes up to ${0.2}$. The theoretical uncertainties of the EOS-insensitive relations are incorporated in ${\tt NRPMw}$ using recalibration parameters that enhance the flexibility and accuracy of the model. ${\tt NRPMw}$ is NR-faithful with fitting factors ${\gtrsim}0.9$ computed on an independent validation set of 102 simulations.

We investigate $r$-process nucleosynthesis and kilonova emission resulting from binary neutron star (BNS) mergers based on a three-dimensional (3D) general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulation of a hypermassive neutron star (HMNS) remnant. The simulation includes a microphysical finite-temperature equation of state (EOS) and neutrino emission and absorption effects via a leakage scheme. We track the thermodynamic properties of the ejecta using Lagrangian tracer particles and determine its composition using the nuclear reaction network $\texttt{SkyNet}$. We investigate the impact of neutrinos on the nucleosynthetic yields by varying the neutrino luminosities during post-processing. The ejecta show a broad distribution with respect to their electron fraction $Y_e$, peaking between $\sim$0.25-0.4 depending on the neutrino luminosity employed. We find that the resulting $r$-process abundance patterns differ from solar, with no significant production of material beyond the second $r$-process peak when using luminosities recorded by the tracer particles. We also map the HMNS outflows to the radiation hydrodynamics code $\texttt{SNEC}$ and predict the evolution of the bolometric luminosity as well as broadband light curves of the kilonova. The bolometric light curve peaks on the timescale of a day and the brightest emission is seen in the infrared bands. This is the first direct calculation of the $r$-process yields and kilonova signal expected from HMNS winds based on 3D GRMHD simulations. For longer-lived remnants, these winds may be the dominant ejecta component producing the kilonova emission., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures

We present a new moment-based energy-integrated neutrino transport code for neutron star merger simulations in general relativity. In the merger context, ours is the first code to include Doppler effects at all orders in $\upsilon/c$, retaining all nonlinear neutrino-matter coupling terms. The code is validated with a stringent series of tests. We show that the inclusion of full neutrino-matter coupling terms is necessary to correctly capture the trapping of neutrinos in relativistically moving media, such as in differentially rotating merger remnants. We perform preliminary simulations proving the robustness of the scheme in simulating ab-initio mergers to black hole collapse and long-term neutron star remnants up to ${\sim}70\,$ms. The latter is the longest dynamical spacetime, 3D, general relativistic simulations with full neutrino transport to date. We compare results obtained at different resolutions and using two different closures for the moment scheme. We do not find evidences of significant out-of-thermodynamic equilibrium effects, such as bulk viscosity, on the postmerger dynamics or gravitational wave emission. Neutrino luminosities and average energies are in good agreement with theory expectations and previous simulations by other groups using similar schemes. We compare dynamical and early wind ejecta properties obtained with M1 and with our older neutrino treatment. We find that the M1 results have systematically larger proton fractions. However, the differences in the nucleosynthesis yields are modest. This work sets the basis for future detailed studies spanning a wider set of neutrino reactions, binaries and equations of state., Comment: 24 pages, 27 figures. Neutrinos are copiously emitted by neutron star mergers, due to the high temperatures reached by dense matter during the merger and its aftermath. Neutrinos influence the merger dynamics and shape the properties of the ejecta, including the resulting $r$-process nucleosynthesis and kilonova emission. In this work, we analyze neutrino emission from a large sample of merger radiation hydrodynamics simulations in Numerical Relativity, covering a broad range of initial masses, nuclear equation of state and viscosity treatments. We extract neutrino luminosities and mean energies, and compute quantities of interest such as the peak values, peak broadnesses, time averages and decrease time scales. We provide a systematic description of such quantities, including their dependence on the initial parameters of the system. We find that for equal-mass systems the total neutrino luminosity (several $10^{53}{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$) decreases for increasing reduced tidal deformability, as a consequence of the less violent merger dynamics. Similarly, tidal disruption in asymmetric mergers leads to systematically smaller luminosities. Peak luminosities can be twice as large as the average ones. Electron antineutrino luminosities dominate (initially by a factor of 2-3) over electron neutrino ones, while electron neutrinos and heavy flavour neutrinos have similar luminosities. Mean energies are nearly constant in time and independent on the binary parameters. Their values reflect the different decoupling temperature inside the merger remnant. Despite present uncertainties in neutrino modelling, our results provide a broad and physically grounded characterization of neutrino emission, and they can serve as a reference point to develop more sophisticated neutrino transport schemes., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, 4 Tables, published in EPJ A topical issue "CompOSE: a repository for Neutron Star Equations of State and Transport Properties"

We develop a method to compute synthetic kilonova light curves that combines numerical relativity simulations of neutron star mergers and the $\texttt{SNEC}$ radiation-hydrodynamics code. We describe our implementation of initial and boundary conditions, r-process heating, and opacities for kilonova simulations. We validate our approach by carefully checking that energy conservation is satisfied and by comparing the $\texttt{SNEC}$ results with those of two semi-analytic light curve models. We apply our code to the calculation of color light curves for three binaries having different mass ratios (equal and unequal mass) and different merger outcome (short-lived and long-lived remnants). We study the sensitivity of our results to hydrodynamic effects, nuclear physics uncertainties in the heating rates, and duration of the merger simulations. We find that hydrodynamics effects are typically negligible and that homologous expansion is a good approximation in most cases. However, pressure forces can amplify the impact of uncertainties in the radioactive heating rates. We also study the impact of shocks possibly launched into the outflows by a relativistic jet. None of our models match AT2017gfo, the kilonova in GW170817. This points to possible deficiencies in our merger simulations and kilonova models which neglect non-LTE effects and possible additional energy injection from the merger remnant, and to the need to go beyond the assumption of spherical symmetry adopted in this work.

We determine the threshold mass for prompt (no bounce) black hole formation in equal-mass neutron star (NS) mergers using a new set of 227 numerical relativity simulations. We consider 23 phenomenological and microphysical finite temperature equations of state (EOS), including models with hyperons and first-order phase transitions to deconfined quarks. We confirm the existence of EOS-insensitive relations between the threshold mass, the binary tidal parameter at the threshold ($\Lambda_{th}$), the maximum mass of nonrotating NSs, and the radii of reference mass NSs. We correct the systematic errors in previously reported fitting coefficients that were obtained with approximate general-relativity simulations. We combine the EOS-insensitive relations, phenomenological constraints on NS properties and observational data from GW170817 to derive an improved lower limit on radii of maximum mass and 1.6 M$_\odot$ NS of 9.81 km and 10.90 km, respectively. We also constrain the radius and quadrupolar tidal deformability ($\Lambda$) of a 1.4 $M_\odot$ NS to be larger than 10.74 km and 172, respectively. We consider uncertainties in all independent parameters -- fitting coefficients as well as GW170817 masses while reporting the range of radii constraints. We introduce new methods to constrain the upper as well as lower limit of NS maximum mass using future BNS detections and their identification as prompt or delayed collapse. With future observations it will be possible to derive even tighter constraints on the properties of matter at and above nuclear density using the method proposed in this work., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D

Using data from 289 numerical relativity simulations of merging binary neutron stars, we identify, for the first time, a robust quasi-universal relation connecting the postmerger peak gravitational-wave frequency and the value of the density at the center of the maximum mass nonrotating neutron star. This relation offers a new possibility for precision equation-of-state constraints with next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers. Mock Einstein Telescope observations of fiducial events indicate that Bayesian inferences can constrain the maximum density to ${\sim}15\%$ ($90\%$ confidence level) for a single signal at the minimum sensitivity threshold for a detection. If the postmerger signal is included in a full-spectrum (inspiral-merger-postmerger) analysis of such signal, the pressure-density function can be tightly constrained up to the maximum density, and the maximum neutron star mass can be measured with an accuracy better than $12\%$ ($90\%$ confidence level).

The merger of two neutron stars or of a neutron star and a black hole often result in the ejection of a few percents of a solar mass of matter expanding at high speed in space. Being matter coming from the violent disruption of a neutron star, these ejecta are initially very dense, hot and extremely rich in neutrons. The few available protons form heavy nuclei ("seeds") that absorb the more abundant free neutrons, increasing their size. The neutron density is so high that a substantial number of neutron captures occur before the resulting unstable nuclei can decay toward more stable configurations, converting neutrons into protons. Depending mostly on the initial neutron richness, this mechanism leads to the formation of up to half of the heavy elements that we observe in nature and it is called rapid neutron capture process ("$r$-process"). The prediction of the precise composition of the ejecta requires a detailed knowledge of the properties of very exotic nuclei, that have never been produced in a laboratory. Despite having long been a speculative scenario, nowadays several observational evidences point to compact binary mergers as one of the major sites where heavy elements are formed in the Universe. (abridged) We investigate the quark deconfinement phase transition in the context of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. We employ a new finite-temperature composition-dependent equation of state (EOS) with a first order phase transition between hadrons and deconfined quarks to perform numerical relativity simulations of BNS mergers. The softening of the EOS due to the phase transition causes the merger remnants to be more compact and to collapse to a black hole (BH) at earlier times. The phase transition is imprinted on the postmerger gravitational wave (GW) signal duration, amplitude, and peak frequency. However, this imprint is only detectable for binaries with sufficiently long-lived remnants. Moreover, the phase transition does not result in significant deviations from quasi-universal relations for the postmerger GW peak frequency. We also study the impact of the phase transition on dynamical ejecta, remnant accretion disk masses, r-process nucleosynthetic yields and associated electromagnetic (EM) counterparts. While there are differences in the EM counterparts and nucleosynthesis yields between the purely hadronic models and the models with phase transitions, these can be primarily ascribed to the difference in remnant collapse time between the two. An exception is the non-thermal afterglow caused by the interaction of the fastest component of the dynamical ejecta and the interstellar medium, which is systematically boosted in the binaries with phase transition as a consequence of the more violent merger they experience., Comment: 28 pages and 16 figures

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are classified as long and short events. Long GRBs (LGRBs) are associated with the end states of very massive stars, while short GRBs (SGRBs) are linked to the merger of compact objects. GRB 200826A was a peculiar event, because by definition it was a SGRB, with a rest-frame duration of ~ 0.5 s. However, this event was energetic and soft, which is consistent with LGRBs. The relatively low redshift (z = 0.7486) motivated a comprehensive, multi-wavelength follow-up campaign to characterize its host, search for a possible associated supernova (SN), and thus understand the origin of this burst. To this aim we obtained a combination of deep near-infrared (NIR) and optical imaging together with spectroscopy. Our analysis reveals an optical and NIR bump in the light curve whose luminosity and evolution is in agreement with several LGRB-SNe. Analysis of the prompt GRB shows that this event follows the $E_{\rm p,i}-E_{\rm iso}$ relation found for LGRBs. The host galaxy is a low-mass star-forming galaxy, typical for LGRBs, but with one of the highest star-formation rates (SFR), especially with respect to its mass ($\log M_\ast/M_\odot = 8.6$, SFR $\sim 4.0 \,M_\odot$/yr). We conclude that GRB 200826A is a typical collapsar event in the low tail of the duration distribution of LGRBs. These findings support theoretical predictions that events produced by collapsars can be as short as 0.5 s in the host frame and further confirm that duration alone is not an efficient discriminator for the progenitor class of a GRB., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. Over the past three years, the fading non-thermal emission from the GW170817 remained generally consistent with the afterglow powered by synchrotron radiation produced by the interaction of the structured jet with the ambient medium. Recent observations by Hajela et al. (2021) indicate the change in temporal and spectral behaviour in the X-ray band. We show that the new observations are compatible with the emergence of a new component due to non-thermal emission from the fast tail of the dynamical ejecta of ab-initio binary neutron star (BNS) merger simulations. This provides a new avenue to constrain binary parameters. Specifically, we find that equal mass models with a soft equation of state (EOS) and high mass ratio models with stiff EOS are disfavored as they typically predict afterglows that peak too early to explain the recent observations. Moderate stiffness and mass ratio models, instead, tend to be in a good overall agreement with the data.

We calibrate a neutrino transport approximation, called Advanced Spectral Leakage (ASL), with the purpose of modeling neutrino-driven winds in neutron star mergers. Based on a number of snapshots we gauge the ASL parameters by comparing against both the two-moment (M1) scheme implemented in the FLASH code and the Monte Carlo neutrino code Sedonu. The ASL scheme contains three parameters, the least robust of which results to be a blocking parameter for electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. The parameter steering the angular distribution of neutrino heating is re-calibrated compared to the earlier work. We also present a new, fast and mesh-free algorithm for calculating spectral optical depths, which, when using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), makes the neutrino transport completely particle-based. We estimate a speed-up of a factor of 100 in the optical depth calculation when comparing to a grid-based approach. In the suggested calibration we recover luminosities and mean energies within 25%. A comparison of the rates of change of internal energy and electron fraction in the neutrino-driven wind suggests comparable accuracies of ASL and M1, but a higher computational efficiency of the ASL scheme. We estimate that the ratio between the CPU hours spent on the ASL neutrino scheme and those spent on the hydrodynamics is 0.8 per timestep when considering the SPH code MAGMA2 as source code for the Lagrangian hydrodynamics, to be compared with a factor of 10 from the M1 in FLASH., Comment: Minor revision, accepted for publication in MNRAS. 20 pages, 11 figures

In the context of the INFN project PANDORA_Gr3 (Plasma for Astrophysics, Nuclear Decays Observation and Radiation for Archaeometry) and of multi-messenger astronomy, we propose a feasibility study for in-laboratory plasma's opacity investigation, in an environment resembling thermodynamic conditions typical of the ejecta of compact binary mergers containing at least a neutron star. We aim to advance knowledge on the physics of kilonovae, the electromagnetic transients following a merger, which are relevant for the study of the origin of heavy nuclei in the Universe produced via r-process nucleosynthesis. The joint detection of the gravitational wave GW170817, of the short $\gamma$-ray burst GRB170817A and of the kilonova AT2017gfo, generated by the the binary neutron star merger observed on August 17, 2017, is a milestone in multimessenger astronomy and provides new constraints on the neutron star equation of state. We perform Bayesian inference and model selection on AT2017gfo using semi-analytical, multi-components models that also account for non-spherical ejecta. Observational data favor anisotropic geometries to spherically symmetric profiles, with a log-Bayes' factor of ${\sim}10^{4}$, and favor multi-component models against single-component ones. The best fitting model is an anisotropic three-component composed of dynamical ejecta plus neutrino and viscous winds. Using the dynamical ejecta parameters inferred from the best-fitting model and numerical-relativity relations connecting the ejecta properties to the binary properties, we constrain the binary mass ratio to $q<1.54$ and the reduced tidal parameter to $120<\tilde\Lambda<1110$. Finally, we combine the predictions from AT2017gfo with those from GW170817, constraining the radius of a neutron star of $1.4~{\rm M}_\odot$ to $12.2\pm0.5~{\rm km}$ ($1\sigma$ level). This prediction could be further strengthened by improving kilonova models with numerical-relativity information.

A precise understanding of the equation of state (EOS) of dense and hot matter is key to modeling relativistic astrophysical environments, including core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), protoneutron star (PNSs) evolution, and compact binary mergers. In this paper, we extend the microscopic zero-temperature BL (Bombaci and Logoteta) %nuclear equation of state nuclear EOS %derived by Bombaci and Logoteta to finite temperature and arbitrary nuclear composition. We employ this new EOS to describe hot $\beta$-stable nuclear matter and to compute various structural properties of nonrotating PNS. %protoneutron stars. We also apply the EOS to perform dynamical simulations of a spherically symmetric CCSN. The EOS is derived using the finite temperature extension of the Brueckner--Bethe--Goldstone quantum many-body theory in the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock approximation. Neutron star properties are computed by solving the Tolman--Oppenheimer--Volkoff structure equations numerically. The sperically symmetric CCSN simulations are performed using the AGILE-IDSA code. Our EOS models are able to reproduce typical features of both PNS and spherically symmetric CCSN simulations. In addition, our EOS model is consistent with present measured neutron star masses and particularly with the masses: $M = 2.01 \pm 0.04 \, M_{\odot}$ and $M = 2.14^{+0.20}_{-0.18} \, M_{\odot}$ of the neutron stars in PSR~J0348+0432 and PSR J0740+6620 respectively. Finally, we suggest a feasible mechanism to produce low-mass black holes ($M \sim 2M_{\odot}$) that could have far-reaching consequences for interpreting the gravitational wave event GW190814 as a BH--BH merger., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present fitting formulae for the dynamical ejecta properties and remnant disk masses from the largest to date sample of numerical relativity simulations. The considered data include some of the latest simulations with microphysical nuclear equations of state (EOS) and neutrino transport as well as other results with polytropic EOS available in the literature. Our analysis indicates that the broad features of the dynamical ejecta and disk properties can be captured by fitting expressions that depend on mass ratio and reduced tidal parameter. The comparative analysis of literature data shows that microphysics and neutrino absorption have a significant impact on the dynamical ejecta properties. Microphysical nuclear equations of state lead to average velocities smaller than polytropic EOS, while including neutrino absorption results in larger average ejecta masses and electron fractions. Hence, microphysics and neutrino transport are necessary to obtain quantitative models of the ejecta in terms of the binary parameters., Comment: Published in Class. Quantum Grav

Neutron star mergers eject neutron-rich matter in which heavy elements are synthesised. The decay of these freshly synthesised elements powers electromagnetic transients ("macronovae" or "kilonovae") whose luminosity and colour strongly depend on their nuclear composition. If the ejecta are very neutron-rich (electron fraction $Y_\mathrm{e} < 0.25$), they contain fair amounts of lanthanides and actinides which have large opacities and therefore efficiently trap the radiation inside the ejecta so that the emission peaks in the red part of the spectrum. Even small amounts of this high-opacity material can obscure emission from lower lying material and therefore act as a "lanthanide curtain". Here, we investigate how a relativistic jet that punches through the ejecta can potentially push away a significant fraction of the high opacity material before the macronova begins to shine. We use the results of detailed neutrino-driven wind studies as initial conditions and explore with 3D special relativistic hydrodynamic simulations how jets are propagating through these winds. Subsequently, we perform Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations to explore the resulting macronova emission. We find that the hole punched by the jet makes the macronova brighter and bluer for on-axis observers during the first few days of emission, and that more powerful jets have larger impacts on the macronova., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted by MNRAS

We present a systematic numerical-relativity study of the dynamical ejecta, winds and nucleosynthesis in neutron star merger remnants. Binaries with the chirp mass compatible with GW170817, different mass ratios, and five microphysical equations of state (EOS) are simulated with an approximate neutrino transport and a subgrid model for magnetohydrodynamics turbulence up to 100 milliseconds postmerger. Spiral density waves propagating from the neutron star remnant to the disk trigger a wind with mass flux ${\sim}0.1{-}0.5\,{\rm M_\odot/s}$ persisting for the entire simulation as long as the remnant does not collapse to black hole. This wind has average electron fraction $\gtrsim 0.3$ and average velocity ${\sim}0.1-0.17\,$c and thus is a site for the production of weak $r$-process elements (mass number $A<195$). Disks around long-lived remnants have masses ${\sim}0.1{-}0.2\,{\rm M_\odot}$, temperatures peaking at $\lesssim10\,$MeV near the inner edge, and a characteristic double-peak distribution in entropy resulting from shocks propagating through the disk. The dynamical and spiral-wave ejecta computed in our targeted simulations are not compatible with those inferred from AT2017gfo using two-components kilonova models. Rather, they indicate that multi-component kilonova models including disk winds are necessary to interpret AT2017gfo. The nucleosynthesis in the combined dynamical ejecta and spiral-wave wind in the comparable-mass long-lived mergers robustly accounts for all the $r$-process peaks, from mass number ${\sim}75$ to actinides in terms of solar abundances. We present new numerical relativity results of neutron star mergers with chirp mass $1.188M_\odot$ and mass ratios $q=1.67$ and $q=1.8$ using finite-temperature equations of state (EOS), approximate neutrino transport and a subgrid model for magnetohydrodynamics-induced turbulent viscosity. The EOS are compatible with nuclear and astrophysical constraints and include a new microphysical model derived from ab-initio calculations based on the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. We report for the first time evidence for accretion-induced prompt collapse in high-mass-ratio mergers, in which the tidal disruption of the companion and its accretion onto the primary star determine prompt black hole formation. As a result of the tidal disruption, an accretion disc of neutron-rich and cold matter forms with baryon masses ${\sim}0.15M_\odot$, and it is significantly heavier than the remnant discs in equal-masses prompt collapse mergers. Massive dynamical ejecta of order ${\sim}0.01M_\odot$ also originate from the tidal disruption. They are neutron rich and expand from the orbital plane with a crescent-like geometry. Consequently, bright, red and temporally extended kilonova emission is predicted from these mergers. Our results show that prompt black hole mergers can power bright electromagnetic counterparts for high-mass-ratio binaries, and that the binary mass ratio can be in principle constrained from multimessenger observations., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables

With the first observation of a binary neutron star merger through gravitational waves and light GW170817, compact binary mergers have now taken the center stage in nuclear astrophysics. They are thought to be one of the main astrophysical sites of production of r-process elements, and merger observations have become a fundamental tool to constrain the properties of matter. Here, we review our current understanding of the dynamics of neutron star mergers, in general, and of GW170817 in particular. We discuss the physical processes governing the inspiral, merger, and postmerger evolution, and we highlight the connections between these processes, the dynamics, and the multimessenger observables. In this letter we focus on the peculiar case of a coalescing compact-object binary whose chirp mass is compatible both with a neutron star-neutron star and black hole-neutron star system, with the black hole in the $\sim 3-5M_\odot$ range defined as the "mass gap". Some models of core-collapse supernovae predict the formation of such low-mass black holes and a recent observation seems to confirm their existence. Here we show that the nature of the companion to the neutron star can be inferred from the properties of the kilonova emission once we know the chirp mass, which is the best constrained parameter inferred from the gravitational signal in low-latency searches. In particular, we find that the kilonova in the black hole-neutron star case is far more luminous than in the neutron star-neutron star case, even when the black hole is non spinning. The difference in the kilonovae brightness arises primarily from the mass ejected during the merger. Indeed, in the considered interval of chirp masses, the mass ejection in double neutron star mergers is at its worst as the system promptly forms a black hole. Instead mass ejection for black hole-neutron star case is at its best as the neutron stars have low mass/large deformability. The kilonovae from black hole-neutron star systems can differ by two to three magnitudes. The outcome is only marginally dependent on the equation of state. In this fourth paper of the series, we use the parametrized, spherically symmetric explosion method PUSH to perform a systematic study of two sets of non-rotating stellar progenitor models. Our study includes pre-explosion models with metallicities Z=0 and Z=Z$_{\odot}\times 10^{-4}$ and covers a progenitor mass range from 11 up to 75 M$_\odot$. We present and discuss the explosion properties of all models and predict remnant (neutron star or black hole) mass distributions within this approach. We also perform systematic nucleosynthesis studies and predict detailed isotopic yields as function of the progenitor mass and metallicity. We present a comparison of our nucleosynthesis results with observationally derived $^{56}$Ni ejecta from normal core-collapse supernovae and with iron-group abundances for metal-poor star HD~84937. Overall, our results for explosion energies, remnant mass distribution, $^{56}$Ni mass, and iron group yields are consistent with observations of normal CCSNe. We find that stellar progenitors at low and zero metallicity are more prone to BH formation than those at solar metallicity, which allows for the formation of BHs in the mass range observed by LIGO/VIRGO., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables. The remnant star of a neutron star merger is an anticipated loud source of kiloHertz gravitational waves that conveys unique information on the equation of state of hot matter at extreme densities. Observations of such signals are hampered by the photon shot noise of ground-based interferometers and pose a challenge for gravitational-wave astronomy. We develop an analytical time-domain waveform model for postmerger signals informed by numerical relativity simulations. The model completes effective-one-body waveforms for quasi-circular nonspinning binaries in the kiloHertz regime. We show that a template-based analysis can detect postmerger signals with a minimal signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of 8, corresponding to GW170817-like events for third-generation interferometers. Using Bayesian model selection and the complete inspiral-merger-postmerger waveform model it is possible to infer whether the merger outcome is a prompt collapse to a black hole or a remnant star. In the latter case, the radius of the maximum mass (most compact) nonrotating neutron star can be determined to kilometer precision. We demonstrate the feasibility of inferring the stiffness of the equation of state at extreme densities using the quasiuniversal relations deduced from numerical-relativity simulations.

The gravitational-wave GW170817 is associated to the inspiral phase of a binary neutron star coalescence event. The LIGO-Virgo detectors sensitivity at high frequencies was not sufficient to detect the signal corresponding to the merger and post-merger phases. Hence, the question whether the merger outcome was a prompt black hole formation or not must be answered using either the pre-merger gravitational wave signal or electromagnetic counterparts. In this work we present two methods to infer the probability of prompt black hole formation, using the analysis of the inspiral gravitational-wave signal. Both methods combine the posterior distribution from the gravitational-wave data analysis with numerical relativity results. One method relies on the use of phenomenological models for the equation of state and on the estimate of the collapse threshold mass. The other is based on the estimate of the tidal polarizability parameter $\tilde{\Lambda}$ that is correlated in an equation-of-state agnostic way with the prompt BH formation. We analyze GW170817 data and find that the two methods consistently predict a probability of ~ 50-70% for prompt black-hole formation, which however may significantly decrease below 10% if the maximum mass constraint from PSR J0348+0432 or PSR J0740+6620 is imposed., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Neutrino-matter interactions play a key role in binary neutron star mergers. Thermodynamics conditions at the surfaces where neutrinos decouple from matter influence neutrino spectra, ultimately affecting the evolution of the remnant and the properties of the ejecta. In this work, we post-process results of general relativistic merger simulations employing microphysical equations of state and approximate neutrino transport to investigate the thermodynamics conditions at which weak and thermal equilibrium freezes out (equilibrium surfaces), as well as conditions at which the transition between diffusion and free-streaming regime occurs (diffusion surfaces). We find that the rest mass density and the neutrino energy are the most relevant quantities in determining the location of the decoupling surfaces. For mean energy neutrinos ($\langle E_{{\nu}_e} \rangle \approx 9~{\rm MeV}$, $\langle E_{{\bar{\nu}}_e} \rangle \approx 15~{\rm MeV}$, $\langle E_{{\nu}_{\mu,\tau}} \rangle \approx 25~{\rm MeV}$), diffusion surfaces are located around $10^{11}{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$ for all neutrino species, while equilibrium surfaces for heavy flavor neutrinos are significantly deeper (several $10^{12}{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$) than the ones of $\bar{\nu}_e$ and $\nu_e$ ($\gtrsim 10^{11}{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$). The resulting decoupling temperatures are in good agreement with the average neutrino energies ($\langle E_{\nu} \rangle \sim 3.15~T$), with the softer equation of state characterized by systematically larger decoupling temperatures ($\Delta T \lesssim 1~{\rm MeV}$). Neutrinos streaming at infinity with different energies come from very different regions of the remnant. The presence of a massive NS or of a BH in the remnant influences the neutrino thermalization process., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

The AT2017gfo kilonova counterpart of the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 was characterized by an early-time bright peak in optical and UV bands. Such blue kilonova is commonly interpreted as a signature of weak $r$-process nucleosynthesis in a fast expanding wind whose origin is currently debated. Numerical-relativity simulations with microphysical equations of state, approximate neutrino transport, and turbulent viscosity reveal a new mechanism that can power the blue kilonova. Spiral density waves in the remnant generate a characteristic wind of mass ${\sim}10^{-2}~M_{\odot}$ and velocity ${\sim}0.2$c. The ejected material has electron fraction mostly distributed above $0.25$ being partially reprocessed by hydrodynamic shocks in the expanding arms. The combination of dynamical ejecta and spiral-wave wind can account for solar system abundances of $r$-process elements and early-time observed light curves., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a new, multi-dimensional implementation of the Advanced Spectral Leakage (ASL) scheme with the purpose of modelling neutrino-matter interactions in neutron star mergers. A major challenge is the neutrino absorption in the semi-transparent regime, which is responsible for driving winds from the merger remnant. The composition of such winds is crucial in the understanding of the electromagnetic emission in the recently observed macronova following GW170817. Compared to the original version, we introduce an optical-depth-dependent flux factor to model the average angle of neutrino propagation, and a modulation that accounts for flux anisotropies in non-spherical geometries. We scrutinise our approach by first comparing the new scheme against the original one for a spherically symmetric core-collapse supernova snapshot, both in 1D and in 3D, and additionally against a two-moment (M1) scheme as implemented in 1D into the code GR1D. The luminosities and mean energies agree to a few percents in most tests. Finally, for the case of a binary merger remnant snapshot we compare the new ASL scheme with the M1 scheme that is implemented in the Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH. We find that the neutrino absorption distribution in the semi-transparent regime is overall well reproduced. Both approaches agree to within $\lesssim 15\%$ for the average energies and to better than $\sim 35 \%$ in the total luminosities., Comment: v.2, minor corrections, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Coalescing neutron star binary (NSB) systems are primary candidates for $r$-process enrichment of galaxies. The recent detection of $r$-process elements in ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies and the abundances measured in classical dwarfs challenges the NSB merger scenario both in terms of coalescence time scales and merger locations. In this paper, we focus on the dynamics of NSBs in the gravitational potentials of different types of host galaxies and on its impact on the subsequent galactic enrichment. We find that, for a $\sim t^{-1}$ delay time distribution, even when receiving a low kick ($\sim 10~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$) from the second supernova explosion, in shallow dwarf galaxy potentials NSBs tend to merge with a large off-set from the host galaxy. This results in a significant geometrical dilution of the amount of produced $r-$process elements that fall back and pollute the host galaxy gas reservoir. The combination of dilution and small number statistics produces a large scatter in the expected $r$-process enrichment within a single UFD or classical dwarf galaxy. Comparison between our results and observed europium abundances reveals a tension that even a systematic choice of optimistic parameters in our models cannot release. Matter in neutron star collisions can reach densities up to few times the nuclear saturation threshold and temperatures up to one hundred MeV. Understanding the structure and composition of such matter requires many-body nonperturbative calculations that are currently highly uncertain.Unique constraints on the neutron star matter are provided by gravitational-wave observations aided by numerical relativity simulations. In this work, we explore the thermodynamical conditions of matter and radiation along the merger dynamics. We consider 3 microphysical equation of state models and numerical relativity simulations including an approximate neutrino transport scheme. The neutron star cores collision and their multiple centrifugal bounces heat the initially cold matter to several tens of MeV. Streams of hot matter with initial densities $\sim1-2\rho_0$ move outwards and cool due to decompression and neutrino emission. The merger can result in a neutron star remnant with densities up to $3-5\rho_0$ and temperatures $\sim 50$~MeV. The highest temperatures are confined in an approximately spherical annulus at densities $\sim\rho_0$. Such temperatures favour positron-neutron capture at densities $\sim\rho_0$, thus leading to a neutrino emission dominated by electron antineutrinos. We study the impact of trapped neutrinos on the remnant matter's pressure, electron fraction and temperature and find that it has a negligible effect. Disks around neutron star or black hole remnant are neutron rich and not isentropic, but they differ in size, entropy and lepton fraction depending on the nature of the central object. Gamma-ray astronomy explores the most energetic photons in nature to address some of the most pressing puzzles in contemporary astrophysics. It encompasses a wide range of objects and phenomena: stars, supernovae, novae, neutron stars, stellar-mass black holes, nucleosynthesis, the interstellar medium, cosmic rays and relativistic-particle acceleration, and the evolution of galaxies. MeV gamma-rays provide a unique probe of nuclear processes in astronomy, directly measuring radioactive decay, nuclear de-excitation, and positron annihilation. The substantial information carried by gamma-ray photons allows us to see deeper into these objects, the bulk of the power is often emitted at gamma-ray energies, and radioactivity provides a natural physical clock that adds unique information. New science will be driven by time-domain population studies at gamma-ray energies. This science is enabled by next-generation gamma-ray instruments with one to two orders of magnitude better sensitivity, larger sky coverage, and faster cadence than all previous gamma-ray instruments. This transformative capability permits: (a) the accurate identification of the gamma-ray emitting objects and correlations with observations taken at other wavelengths and with other messengers; (b) construction of new gamma-ray maps of the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies where extended regions are distinguished from point sources; and (c) considerable serendipitous science of scarce events -- nearby neutron star mergers, for example. General-relativistic simulations of binary neutron star mergers with viscosity reveal a new outflow mechanism operating in unequal mass binaries on dynamical timescales and enabled by turbulent viscosity. These "viscous-dynamical" ejecta are launched during merger due to the thermalization of mass exchange streams between the secondary and the primary neutron star. They are characterized by asymptotic velocities extending up to ${\sim} 0.8\, c$, and have masses that depend on the efficiency of the viscous mechanism. Depending on the unknown strength of the effective viscosity arising from magnetohydrodynamics instabilities operating during merger, the overall mass of the dynamical ejecta could be enhanced by a factor of a few and the mass of the fast tail of the ejecta having asymptotic velocities $\geq 0.6\, c$ by up to four orders of magnitude. The radioactive decay of the expanding viscous-dynamical ejecta could produce bright kilonova transients with signatures of free neutron decay in the first hour and enhanced near infrared flux on a timescale of a few days. The synchrotron remnant produced by the interaction between the ejecta and the interstellar medium could also be significantly enhanced by viscosity. Such remnant could be detected in the case of GW170817 as a rebrightening of the radio signal in the next months to years., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, version accepted in ApJL

We present a systematic numerical relativity study of the mass ejection and the associated electromagnetic transients and nucleosynthesis from binary neutron star (NS) mergers. We find that a few $10^{-3}\, M_\odot$ of material are ejected dynamically during the mergers. The amount and the properties of these outflow depend on binary parameters and on the NS equation of state (EOS). A small fraction of these ejecta, typically ${\sim}10^{-6}\, M_\odot$, is accelerated by shocks formed shortly after merger to velocities larger than $0.6\, {\rm c}$ and produces bright radio flares on timescales of weeks, months, or years after merger. Their observation could constrain the strength with which the NSs bounce after merger and, consequently, the EOS of matter at extreme densities. The dynamical ejecta robustly produce second and third $r$-process peak nuclei with relative isotopic abundances close to solar. The production of light $r$-process elements is instead sensitive to the binary mass ratio and the neutrino radiation treatment. Accretion disks of up to ${\sim}0.2\, M_\odot$ are formed after merger, depending on the lifetime of the remnant. In most cases, neutrino- and viscously-driven winds from these disks dominate the overall outflow. Finally, we generate synthetic kilonova light curves and find that kilonovae depend on the merger outcome and could be used to constrain the NS EOS., Comment: 33 pages, 32 figures, 3 tables.
