Purpose: To investigate the microbiological outcomes obtained with either subgingival debridement (SD) in conjunction with a gel containing sodium hypochlorite and amino acids followed by subsequent application of a cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel (xHyA) gel, or with SD alone. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight patients diagnosed with stages II-III (grades A/B) generalised periodontitis were randomly treated with either SD (control) or SD plus adjunctive sodium hypochlorite/amino acids and xHyA gel (test). Subgingival plaque samples were collected from the deepest site per quadrant in each patient at baseline and after 3 and 6 months. Pooled sample analysis was performed using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method for the identification of detection frequencies and changes in numbers of the following bacteria: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a), Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g), Tannerella forsythia (T.f), Treponema denticola (T.d), and Prevotella intermedia (P.i). Results: In terms of detection frequency, in the test group, statistically significant reductions were found for P.g, T.f, T.d and P.i (p < 0.05) after 6 months. In the control group, the detection frequencies of all investigated bacterial species at 6 months were comparable to the baseline values (p > 0.05). The comparison of the test and control groups revealed statistically significant differences in detection frequency for P.g (p = 0.034), T.d (p < 0.01) and P.i (p = 0.02) after 6 months, favouring the test group. Regarding reduction in detection frequency scores, at 6 months, statistically significant differences in favour of the test group were observed for all investigated bacterial species: A.a (p = 0.028), P.g (p = 0.028), T.f (p = 0.004), T.d (p <0.001), and P.i (p = 0.003). Conclusions: The present microbiological results, which are related to short-term outcomes up to 6 months post-treatment, support the adjunctive subgingival application of sodium hypochlorite/amino acids and xHyA to subgingival debridement in the treatment of periodontitis. Background/Objectives: Severe clinical course and mortality from COVID-19 are mostly associated with increased concentrations of IL-6 and IL-10. Findings from clinical trials suggest that both statins and renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASI) might have the potential to reduce unfavorable outcomes in patients with COVID-19. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of statins and RAASI on the cytokine concentrations in COVID-19 patients. Methods: SARS-CoV-2 infected patients were enrolled in this study, and demographic, clinical, and routine laboratory data were evaluated. Plasma cytokine levels were measured by multiplex assay. Results: COVID-19 patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases (CVD) had significantly lower median plasma IL-6 levels than COVID-19 patients with no co-morbidities (26 vs. 53 pg/mL, p = 0.021). COVID-19 patients with CVD who were taking statins had significantly lower median concentrations of IL-6 (21 vs. 44 pg/mL, p = 0.027), TNFα (21 vs. 39.5 pg/mL, p = 0.036), and IL-10 (19 vs. 25.5 pg/mL, p = 0.025) compared to COVID-19 patients with no CVD. In a binary logistic regression model, IL-6 was a significant variable, with an odds ratio value of 0.961 (95% CI 0.929–0.995). Regarding RAASI, only plasma IL-6 (22 vs. 44 pg/mL, p = 0.012) levels were found to be significantly lower in COVID-19 patients with CVD consuming these medications compared to patients who did not have any CVD. Conclusions: COVID-19 patients who had chronic cardiovascular co-morbidities and who were administered statins or RAASI had significantly lower concentrations of IL-6 than COVID-19 patients who did not have any co-morbidities. Aim: ESBL-producing and bacterial biofilms-forming Escherichia coli are associated with antimicrobial treatment failure. This study aimed to investigate the phenotypic resistance mechanisms of CTX-M E. coli against old antibiotics - cell wall synthesis inhibitors temocillin, nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin. Materials & Methods: Susceptibility to old antibiotics testing was performed using disk diffusion method, biofilm formation was evaluated spectrophotometrically, and PCR was used for the determination of CTX-M type. Results & conclusion: Temocillin was active against nearly 93%, nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin, respectively, 91.7% and 98.6% of tested E. coli. Thus, it demonstrated to be a good alternative therapeutic option against ESBL infections. Bacteria resistant to old antibiotics had CTX-M-15 or CTX-M-15, TEM-1 and OXA-1 combinations. No significant association was found between CTX-M E. coli resistance to temocillin, nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin; however, the level of biofilm formation was found as not affected by the type of CTX-M β-lactamases.
