Context: Given the current big data era in Astronomy, machine learning based methods have being applied over the last years to identify or classify objects like quasars, galaxies and stars from full sky photometric surveys. Aims: Here we systematically evaluate the performance of Random Forests (RF) in classifying quasars using either magnitudes or colours, both from broad and narrow-band filters, as features. Methods: The working data consists of photometry from the ALHAMBRA Gold Catalogue that we cross-matched with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and with the Million Quasars Catalogue (Milliquas) for objects labelled as quasars, galaxies or stars. A RF classifier is trained and tested to evaluate the effect on final accuracy and precision of varying the free parameters and the effect of using narrow or broad-band magnitudes or colours. Results: Best performances of the classifier yielded global accuracy and quasar precision around 0.9. Varying model free parameters (within reasonable ranges of values) has no significant effects on the final classification. Using colours instead of magnitudes as features results in better performances of the classifier, especially using colours from the ALHAMBRA Survey. Colours that contribute the most to the classification are those containing the near-infrared $JHK$ bands., Comment: 7 pages including 6 figures and 3 tables. El confinamiento de la población en España durante el año 2020, debido a la pandemia de la COVID-19, obligó a las universidades a migrar su docencia a modalidad on-line o a distancia. En las universidades de educación a distancia esto no supuso un cambio radical, que sí hubo que llevar a cabo en las universidades presenciales. En este trabajo, queremos presentar una visión general de cómo afectó dicha circunstancia a la docencia universitaria, en general, y al caso de la astronomía y astrofísica en particular.

There is a growing interest in the automated characterization of open clusters using data from the Gaia mission. This work evidences the importance of choosing an appropriate sampling radius (the radius of the circular region around the cluster used to extract the data) and the usefulness of additional multiband photometry in order to achieve accurate results. We address this issue using as a case study the cluster Alessi-Teutsch 9. The optimal sampling is determined by counting the number of assigned members at different sampling radii. By using this strategy with data from Gaia EDR3 and with observed photometry in 12 bands spanning the optical range from 3000 to 10000 Å, approximately, we are able to obtain reliable members and to determine the properties of the cluster. The spatial distribution of stars show a two-component structure with a central core of radius ∼ 12 − 13 arcmin and an outer halo extending out to 35 arcmin. With the derived cluster distance (654 pc) we obtain that the number density of stars is ≃ 0.06 star/pc3, making Alessi-Teutsch 9 one of the less dense known open clusters. (1) The goal of this study was to analyze the prevalence and pattern of alcohol consumption (frequency of consumption, average daily consumption, and risky consumption) before and during confinement due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the adult population and based on gender. (2) Methods: Data from 3779 individuals were collected via a set of online surveys. The AUDIT alcohol consumption questions (AUDIT-C) were used to measure the frequency of consumption, the average daily consumption, intensive consumption, risky consumption, and standard drink units. (3) Results: During confinement, the prevalence of alcohol consumption declined in both males and females, but only intensive consumption showed significant differences, with a greater reduction in males. The number of females who consumed alcohol four or more times per week doubled, whereas the number of males who did so was multiplied by a factor of 1.5, in both females and males, the percentage who presented intensive consumption doubled. The percentage of females with risky consumption was higher than that of males both before and during confinement. In addition to gender, the interaction between age and the employment situation explain consumption before and during confinement. (4) Conclusions: During confinement due to COVID-19, alcohol consumption declined in both sexes, but alcohol-risk consumers increased their frequency of use. The interaction between gender, age, and employment situation was related to these changes. These findings are relevant for guiding public health and health-risk management policies related to alcohol consumption in environmental situations similar to COVID-19.

The public health strategies adopted for the containment of COVID-19 have generated psychosocial stressors that act as risk factors for alcohol consumption. The objectives of this study were to establish whether alcohol risk consumption varied during COVID-19 confinement, and how these variations manifested as a function of different sociodemographic variables.The study was conducted during confinement with 3,779 participants in Spain. We used an online survey with sociodemographic variables (sex, age and employment situation) and AUDIT-C. Frequency and mean difference analysis were performed (Student t, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis) to establish intra-group variations before the pandemic compared to during confinement, and intergroup for each time period, reporting effect size.Alcohol risky consumption presented high prevalence rates before confinement (25,9% of alcohol consumers), showing a general decrease during confinement (15,1%), both in men (XThe alcohol risky consumption decreased in a generalized way during the confinement by COVID-19, but the changes in prevalence and risk index were dependent on sociodemographic variables. It is recommended that these findings are considered in the design of public health policies and strategies.Las estrategias de salud pública adoptadas para la contención del COVID-19 han generado estresores psicosociales que actúan como factores de riesgo del consumo de alcohol. Los objetivos del estudio fueron establecer si el consumo de riesgo de alcohol varió durante el confinamiento por COVID-19 durante los meses de abril y mayo de 2020, y cómo estas variaciones se manifestaban en función de distintas variables sociodemográficas.El estudio se desarrolló durante el confinamiento con 3.779 participantes en España. Se utilizó una encuesta online con variables sociodemográficas (sexo, edad y situación laboral) y el AUDIT-C. Se realizó análisis de frecuencias y diferencia de medias (t de Student, ANOVA y Kruskal-Wallis) para establecer las variaciones a nivel intragrupo entre antes de la pandemia y durante el confinamiento, e intergrupo para cada periodo temporal, reportando tamaño del efecto.El consumo de riesgo de alcohol presentó una prevalencia elevada antes del confinamiento (25,9% de los consumidores de alcohol), mostrando un descenso durante el confinamiento (15,1%), tanto en hombres (XEl consumo de riesgo de alcohol desciende de manera generalizada durante el confinamiento por COVID-19, pero los cambios en prevalencia y probabilidad de ser consumidor de riesgo de alcohol son dependientes de variables sociodemográficas. Se recomienda contemplar estos hallazgos en el diseño de políticas y estrategias de salud pública.

PSRJ 2032+4127 is only the second known gamma-ray binary where it is confirmed that a young radio pulsar is in orbit around a Be-star. The interaction of the pulsar wind with the mass outflow from the companion leads to broad band emission from radio up to TeV energies. In the current paper we present results of optical monitoring of the 2017 periastron passage with the Nordic Optical Telescope. These observations are complemented by X-ray (Swift/XRT, NuSTAR) and GeV (Fermi/LAT) monitoring. Joint analysis of the evolution of the parameters of the Halpha line and the broadband (X-ray to TeV) spectral shape allows us to propose a model linking the observed emission to the interaction of the pulsar and Be-star winds under the assumption of the inclined disc geometry. A joint analysis of high precision HARPS, HARPS-N, and FIES radial velocity measurements and K2 photometric data indicates that K2-280 b has a radius of Rb = 7.50 ± 0.44 R⊕ and a mass of Mb = 37.1 ± 5.6 M⊕, yielding a mean density of ρb = 0.48 -0.10+0.13 g cm-3. The host star is a mildly evolved G7 star with an effective temperature of Teff = 5500 ± 100 K, a surface gravity of log g = 4.21 ± 0.05 (cgs), and an iron abundance of [Fe/H] = 0.33 ± 0.08 dex, and with an inferred mass of M∗ = 1.03 ± 0.03 M⊙ and a radius of R∗ = 1.28 ± 0.07 R⊙. New astronomy reviews 86, 101546 (2019). doi:10.1016/j.newar.2020.101546, High mass X-ray binaries are among the brightest X-ray sources in the Milky Way, as well as in nearby Galaxies. Thanks to their highly variable emissions and complex phenomenology, they have attracted the interest of the high energy astrophysical community since the dawn of X-ray Astronomy. In more recent years, they have challenged our comprehension of physical processes in many more energy bands, ranging from the infrared to very high energies.In this review, we provide a broad but concise summary of the physical processes dominating the emission from high mass X-ray binaries across virtually the whole electromagnetic spectrum. These comprise the interaction of stellar winds with the high gravitational and magnetic fields of compact objects, the behaviour of matter under extreme magnetic and gravity conditions, and the perturbation of the massive star evolutionary processes by presence in a binary system.We highlight the role of the INTEGRAL mission in the discovery of many of the most interesting objects in the high mass X-ray binary class and its contribution in reviving the interest for these sources over the past two decades. We show how the INTEGRAL discoveries have not only contributed to significantly increase the number of high mass X-ray binaries known, thus advancing our understanding of the population as a whole, but also have opened new windows of investigation that stimulated the multi-wavelength approach nowadays common in most astrophysical research fields.We conclude the review by providing an overview of future facilities being planned from the X-ray to the very high energy domain that will hopefully help us in finding an answer to the many questions left open after more than 18 years of INTEGRAL scientific observations., Published by Elsevier Science, Amsterdam [u.a.]

Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) mission is an ESA pay load which will be installed in the Columbus module of the International Space Station (ISS). ASIM is optimized to the observation and monitoring of luminescent phenomena in the upper atmosphere, the so called Transient Luminous Event (TLEs) and Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes(TGFs). Both TLEs and TGFs have been discovered recently (past two decades) and opened a new field of research in high energetic phenomena in the atmosphere. We will review the capabilities of ASIM and how it will help researchers to gain deeper knowledge of TGFs, TLEs, their inter-relationship and how they are linked to severe thunderstorms and the phenomena of lightning.

arXiv:1701.08618v2, Massive stars, at least ∼ 10 times more massive than the Sun, have two key properties that make them the main drivers of evolution of star clusters, galaxies, and the Universe as a whole. On the one hand, the outer layers of massive stars are so hot that they produce most of the ionizing ultraviolet radiation of galaxies; in fact, the first massive stars helped to re-ionize the Universe after its Dark Ages. Another important property of massive stars are the strong stellar winds and outflows they produce. This mass loss, and finally the explosion of a massive star as a supernova or a gamma-ray burst, provide a significant input of mechanical and radiative energy into the interstellar space. These two properties together make massive stars one of the most important cosmic engines: they trigger the star formation and enrich the interstellar medium with heavy elements, that ultimately leads to formation of Earth-like rocky planets and the development of complex life. The study of massive star winds is thus a truly multidisciplinary field and has a wide impact on different areas of astronomy. In recent years observational and theoretical evidences have been growing that these winds are not smooth and homogeneous as previously assumed, but rather populated by dense “clumps”. The presence of these structures dramatically affects the mass loss rates derived from the study of stellar winds. Clump properties in isolated stars are nowadays inferred mostly through indirect methods (i.e., spectroscopic observations of line profiles in various wavelength regimes, and their analysis based on tailored, inhomogeneous wind models). The limited characterization of the clump physical properties (mass, size) obtained so far have led to large uncertainties in the mass loss rates from massive stars. Such uncertainties limit our understanding of the role of massive star winds in galactic and cosmic evolution. Supergiant high mass X-ray binaries (SgXBs) are among the brightest X-ray sources in the sky. A large number of them consist of a neutron star accreting from the wind of a massive companion and producing a powerful X-ray source. The characteristics of the stellar wind together with the complex interactions between the compact object and the donor star determine the observed X-ray output from all these systems. Consequently, the use of SgXBs for studies of massive stars is only possible when the physics of the stellar winds, the compact objects, and accretion mechanisms are combined together and confronted with observations. This detailed review summarises the current knowledge on the theory and observations of winds from massive stars, as well as on observations and accretion processes in wind-fed high mass X-ray binaries. K2 Campaign 5 observations of pulsating subdwarf B stars: Binaries and super-Nyquist frequencies. We report the discovery of three pulsating subdwarf B stars in binary systems observed with the Kepler space telescope during Campaign 5 of K2. EPIC 211696659 (SDSS J083603.98+155216.4) is a g-mode pulsator with a white dwarf companion and a binary period of 3.16 d. EPICs 211823779 (SDSS J082003.35+173914.2) and 211938328 (LB 378) are both p-mode pulsators with main-sequence F companions. The orbit of EPIC 211938328 is long (635 ± 146 d) while we cannot constrain that of EPIC 211823779. The p modes are near the Nyquist frequency and so we investigate ways to discriminate super- from sub-Nyquist frequencies. We search for rotationally induced frequency multiplets and all three stars appear to be slow rotators with EPIC 211696659 subsynchronous to its orbit.

HD 3167 is a bright (V = 8.9 mag) K0 V star observed by NASA’s K2 space mission during its Campaign 8. It has recently been found to host two small transiting planets, namely, HD 3167b, an ultra-short-period (0.96 days) super-Earth, and HD 3167c, a mini-Neptune on a relatively long-period orbit (29.85 days). Here we present an intensive radial velocity (RV) follow-up of HD 3167 performed with the FIES@NOT, HARPS@ESO-3.6 m, and HARPS-N@TNG spectrographs. We revise the system parameters and determine radii, masses, and densities of the two transiting planets by combining the K2 photometry with our spectroscopic data. With a mass of 5.69 ± 0.44 M ⊕, a radius of 1.574 ± 0.054 R ⊕, and a mean density of {8.00}-0.98+1.10 {{g}} {{cm}}-3, HD 3167b joins the small group of ultra-short-period planets known to have rocky terrestrial compositions. HD 3167c has a mass of {8.33}-1.85+1.79 M ⊕ and a radius of {2.740}-0.100+0.106 R ⊕, yielding a mean density of {2.21}-0.53+0.56 {{g}} {{cm}}-3, indicative of a planet with a composition comprising a solid core surrounded by a thick atmospheric envelope. The rather large pressure scale height (∼350 km) and the brightness of the host star make HD 3167c an ideal target for atmospheric characterization via transmission spectroscopy across a broad range of wavelengths. We found evidence of additional signals in the RV measurements but the currently available data set does not allow us to draw any firm conclusions on the origin of the observed variation.

We analyse the light curve in the R band of the blazar OJ287, gathered during the 2015/2016 observing season. We did a search for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) using several methods over a wide range of timescales. No statistically significant periods were found in the high-frequency domain both in the ground-based data and in Kepler observations. In the longer-period domain, the Lomb–Scargle periodogram revealed several peaks above the 99% significance level. The longest one—about 95 days—corresponds to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) period of the more massive black hole. The 43-day period could be an alias, or it can be attributed to accretion in the form of a two-armed spiral wave.

We report a new subdwarf B (sdB) pulsator, PG1142-037, discovered during the first full-length campaign of K2, the two-gyro mission of the Kepler space telescope. Fourteen periodicities have been detected between 0.9 and 2.5 hours with amplitudes below 0.35 ppt. We have been able to associate all of the pulsations with low-degree, ell, 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Context. Be/X-ray binaries represent the main group of high-mass X-ray binaries. The determination of the astrophysical parameters of the counterparts of these high-energy sources is important for the study of X-ray binary populations in our Galaxy. X-ray observations suggest that SAX J2239.3+6116 is a Be/X-ray binary. However, little is known about the astrophysical parameters of its massive companion. Aims. The main goal of this work is to perform a detailed study of the optical variability of the Be/X-ray binary SAX J2239.3+6116. Methods. We obtained multi-colour BVRI photometry and polarimetry and 4000−7000 A spectroscopy. The 4000–5000 A spectra allowed us to determine the spectral type and projected rotational velocity of the optical companion; the 6000−7000 A spectra, together with the photometric magnitudes, were used to derive the colour excess E (B −V ), estimate the distance, and to study the variability of the Hα line. Results. The optical counterpart to SAX J2239.3+6116 is a V = 14.8 B0Ve star located at a distance of ~4.9 kpc. The interstellar reddening in the direction of the source is E (B −V ) = 1.70 ± 0.03 mag. The monitoring of the Hα line reveals a slow long-term decline of its equivalent width since 2001. The line profile is characterized by a stable double-peak profile with no indication of large-scale distortions. We measured intrinsic optical polarization for the first time. Although somewhat higher than predicted by the models, the optical polarization is consistent with electron scattering in the circumstellar disk. Conclusions. We attribute the long-term decrease in the intensity of the Hα line to the dissipation of the circumstellar disk of the Be star. The longer variability timescales observed in SAX J2239.3+6116 compared to other Be/X-ray binaries may be explained by the wide orbit of the system.

The discovery of very slow pulsations (Pspin=5560s) has solved the long-standing question of the nature of the compact object in the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 but has posed new ones. According to spin evolutionary models in close binary systems, such slow pulsations require a neutron star magnetic field strength larger that the quantum critical value, suggesting the presence of a magnetar. We present the first XMM-Newton observations of 4U 2206+54 and investigate its spin evolution. We find that the observed spin-down rate agrees with the magnetar scenario. We analyse ISGRI/INTEGRAL observations of 4U 2206+54 to search for the previously suggested cyclotron resonance scattering feature at ~30 keV. We do not find a clear indication of the presence of the line, although certain spectra display shallow dips, not always at 30 keV. The association of these dips with a cyclotron line is very dubious because of its apparent transient nature. We also investigate the energy spectrum of 4U 2206+54 in the energy range 0.3-10 keV with unprecedented detail and report for the first time the detection of very weak 6.5 keV fluorescence iron lines. The photoelectric absorption is consistent with the interstellar value, indicating very small amount of local matter, which would explain the weakness of the florescence lines. The lack of matter locally to the source may be the consequence of the relatively large orbital separation of the two components of the binary. The wind would be too tenuous in the vicinity of the neutron star.

High Mass X-Ray Binary systems (HMXRB) are composed by a compact object orbiting around a OB massive star. The mass transfer which takes place from the massive star onto its compact companion is the responsible of the emission of high energy photons (X-rays) observed in these systems (to which they owe the name of their class). The presence of a compact object must exert a clear influence in the outer envelopes of the massive star and, thus, must modify the formation and evolution of its stellar wind. Tidal interactions, mass capture and high energy radiation heating and pressure are among the possible ways in which the compact companion and the X-ray emission will influence the stellar wind of the massive counterpart. The status of the observations of such systems from previous UV missions will be reviewed, and perspectives for the incoming WSO-UV space mission will be reported.

SAX J2103.5+4545 is the Be/X-ray binary with the shortest orbital period. It shows extended bright and faint X-ray states that last for a few hundred days. The main objective of this work is to investigate the relationship between the X-ray and optical variability and to characterise the spectral and timing properties of the bright and faint states. We have found a correlation between the spectral and temporal parameters that fit the energy and power spectra. Softer energy spectra correspond to softer power spectra. That is to say, when the energy spectrum is soft the power at high frequencies is suppressed. We also present the results of our monitoring of the Halpha line of the optical counterpart since its discovery in 2003. There is a correlation between the strength and shape of the Halpha line, originated in the circumstellar envelope of the massive companion and the X-ray emission from the vicinity of the neutron star. Halpha emission, indicative of an equatorial disc around the B-type star, is detected whenever the source is bright in X-rays. When the disc is absent, the X-ray emission decreases significantly. The long-term variability of SAX J2103.5+4545 is characterised by fast episodes of disc loss and subsequent reformation. The time scales for the loss and reformation of the disc (about 2 years) are the fastest among Be/X-ray binaries., 12 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, to be published in MNRAS

As we celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, we have been working on four different projects with the goal of making astronomy more accessible to people with special needs. These projects are 1) an astronomy book and web site for blind people, 2) an open source software for people with motor disabilities, 3) a planetarium program for the visually impaired and 4) educational material for intellectually disabled people.

BD+53 2790, an O9.5Vp star, is the optical counterpart to the HMXRB 4U 2206+54. This system was classified initially as a BeX, but observational evidence soon stressed the need to revise this classification. The permanent asymmetry in the H-alpha line profiles (in contrast with the cyclic variations shown by Be stars), the variations in the profile of this line in time scales of hours (while time scales from weeks to months are expected in Be stars), and the lack of correlation between IR observables and H-alpha line parameters, strongly suggest that, while BD+53 2790 contains a circunstellar disc, it is not like the one present in Be stars. Furthermore, there is evidence of overabundance of He in BD+53 2790. Together with the presence of an anomalous wind, found through UV spectroscopy, the possibility to link this star with the group of He rich stars is open. We will discuss the work done with IUE data from BD+53 2790 and the unexpected finding of a slow and dense wind, very rare for an O9.5V star., 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted dor publication in Astronomy and Space Science

We present a type-I outburst of the high-mass X-ray binary EXO 2030+375, detected during INTEGRAL's Performance and Verification Phase in December 2002 (on-source time about 10e+06 seconds). In addition, six more outbursts have been observed during INTEGRAL's Galactic Plane Scans. X-ray pulsations have been detected with a pulse period of 41.691798+-0.000016 s. The X-ray luminosity in the 5-300 keV energy range was 9.7*10e+36 erg/s, for a distance of 7.1 kpc. Two unusual features were found in the light curve, with an initial peak before the main outburst and another possible spike after the maximum. RXTE observations confirm only the existence of the initial spike. Although the initial peak appears to be a recurrent feature, the physical mechanisms producing it and the possible second spike are unknown. Moreover, a four-day delay between periastron passage and the peak of the outburst is observed. We present for the first time a 5-300 keV broad-band spectrum of this source. It can be modelled by the sum of a disk black body (kT_bb~8 keV) with either a power law model with Gamma=2.04+-0.11 keV or a Comptonized component (spherical geometry, kT_e=30 keV, tau=2.64, kT_W=1.5 keV)., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, to be published in A&A

We present an INTEGRAL data analysis of the X-ray transient \object{SAX J2103.5+4545} during two outbursts detected in December 2002. The INTEGRAL coordinates and error circle agree with the position of the recently proposed optical counterpart. A power-law plus cut-off model provided a good fit to the 4-150 keV spectrum yielding a photon index of 1.0+-0.1, a cut-off energy E_cut=7.6+-2.0 keV and a folding energy E_fold=30.9+-2.5 keV. The X-ray luminosity in the 4-150 keV energy range was found to be 6.0x10^36 erg/s, assuming a distance of 6.5 kpc. This luminosity, together with the derived photon index, indicate that the source is in a bright state. A 354.9$+-0.5 second pulse period is measured. This value is significantly smaller than previous measurements, indicating a long-term spin-up episode., 6 pages, 8 figures

The Be X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 was in an extended low luminosity state during most of 2016. We observed this state with NuSTAR and Swift, supported by INTEGRAL observations as well as optical spectroscopy with the NOT. We present a comprehensive spectral and timing analysis of these data here to study the accretion geometry and investigate a possible onset of the propeller effect. The H-alpha data show that the circumstellar disk of the Be-star is still present. We measure equivalent widths similar to values found during more active phases in the past, indicating that the low-luminosity state is not simply triggered by a smaller Be disk. The NuSTAR data, taken at a 3-78 keV luminosity of ~6.8e35 erg/s (for a distance of 7.1 kpc), are well described by standard accreting pulsar models, such as an absorbed power-law with a high-energy cutoff. We find that pulsations are still clearly visible at these luminosities, indicating that accretion is continuing despite the very low mass transfer rate. In phase-resolved spectroscopy we find a peculiar variation of the photon index from ~1.5 to ~2.5 over only about 3% of the rotational period. This variation is similar to that observed with XMM-Newton at much higher luminosities. It may be connected to the accretion column passing through our line of sight. With Swift/XRT we observe luminosities as low as 1e34 erg/s during which the data quality did not allow us to search for pulsations, but the spectrum is much softer and well described by either a blackbody or soft power-law continuum. This softer spectrum might be due to the fact that accretion has been stopped by the propeller effect and we only observe the neutron star surface cooling., 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (v2 including language edits)

This contribution gathers the contents of the white paper submitted by the UV community to the Call issued by the European Space Agency in March 2013, for the definition of the L2 and L3 missions in the ESA science program. We outlined the key science that a large UV facility would make possible and the instrumentation to be implemented. The growth of luminous structures and the building blocks of life in the Universe began as primordial gas was processed in stars and mixed at galactic scales. The mechanisms responsible for this development are not well-understood and have changed over the intervening 13 billion years. To follow the evolution of matter over cosmic time, it is necessary to study the strongest (resonance) transitions of the most abundant species in the Universe. Most of them are in the ultraviolet (UV; 950 Å–3000 Å) spectral range that is unobservable from the ground. A versatile space observatory with UV sensitivity a factor of 50–100 greater than existing facilities will revolutionize our understanding of the Universe. Habitable planets grow in protostellar discs under ultraviolet irradiation, a by-product of the star-disk interaction that drives the physical and chemical evolution of discs and young planetary systems. The electronic transitions of the most abundant molecules are pumped by this UV field, providing unique diagnostics of the planet-forming environment that cannot be accessed from the ground. Earth’s atmosphere is in constant interaction with the interplanetary medium and the solar UV radiation field. A 50–100 times improvement in sensitivity would enable the observation of the key atmospheric ingredients of Earth-like exoplanets (carbon, oxygen, ozone), provide crucial input for models of biologically active worlds outside the solar system, and provide the phenomenological baseline to understand the Earth atmosphere in context.

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Context. The source 4U 2206+54 is one of the most enigmatic high-mass X-ray binaries. In spite of intensive searches, X-ray pul- sations have not been detected in the time range 10−3–103 s. A cyclotron line at ∼30 keV has been suggested by various authors but never detected with significance. The stellar wind of the optical companion is abnormally slow. The orbital period, initially reported to be 9.6 days, disappeared and a new periodicity of 19.25 days emerged. Aims. The main objective of our RXTE monitoring of 4U 2206+54 is to study the X-ray orbital variability of the spectral and timing parameters. The new long and uninterrupted RXTE observations allow us to search for long (∼1 h) pulsations for the first time. Methods. We divided the ∼7-day observation into five intervals and obtained time-averaged energy spectra and power spectral density for each observation interval. We also searched for pulsations using various algorithms. Results. We have discovered 5560-s pulsations in the light curve of 4U 2206+54. Initially detected in RXTE data, these pulsa- tions are also present in INTEGRAL and EXOSAT observations. The average X-ray luminosity in the energy range 2–10 keV is 1.5 × 1035 erg s−1 with a ratio Fmax /Fmin ≈ 5. This ratio implies an eccentricity of ∼0.4, somewhat higher than previously suggested. The power spectrum is dominated by red noise that can be fitted with a single power law whose index and strength decrease with X-ray flux. The source also shows a soft excess at low energies. If the soft excess is modelled with a blackbody component, then the size and temperature of the emitting region agrees with its interpretation in terms of a hot spot on the neutron star surface. Conclusions. The discovery of X-ray pulsations in 4U 2206+54 confirms the neutron star nature of the compact companion and definitively rules out the presence of a black hole. The source displays variability on time scales of days, presumably due to changes in the mass accretion rate as the neutron star moves around the optical companion in a moderately eccentric orbit. If current models for the spin evolution in X-ray pulsars are correct, then the magnetic field of 4U 2206+54 at birth must have been B 􏰀 1014 G. pereblay@uv.es

In the past few years, a new class of High Mass X-Ray Binaries (HMXRB) has been claimed to exist, the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT). These are X-ray binary systems with a compact companion orbiting a supergiant star which show very short and bright outbursts in a series of activity periods overimposed on longer quiescent periods. Only very recently the first attempts to model the behaviour of these sources have been published, some of them within the framework of accretion from clumpy stellar winds.Our goal is to analyze the properties of XTE J1739-302/IGR J17391-3021 within the context of the clumpy structure of the supergiant wind. We have used INTEGRAL and RXTE/PCA observations in order to obtain broad band (1-200 keV) spectra and light curves of XTE J1739-302 and investigate its X-ray spectrum and temporal variability. We have found that XTE J1739-302 follows a much more complex behaviour than expected. We present the results of our long-term monitoring of BD+53 2790, the optical counterpart to the X-ray source 4U~2206+54. Unlike previous studies that classify the source as a Be/X-ray binary, we find that its optical and infrared properties differ from those of typical Be stars: the variability of the V/R ratio is not cyclical; there are variations in the shape and strength of the H$\alpha$ emission line on timescales less than 1 day; and no correlation between the EW and the IR magnitudes or colors is seen. Our observations suggest that BD+53 2790 is very likely a peculiar O9.5V star. In spite of exhaustive searches we cannot find any significant modulation in any emission line parameter or optical/infrared magnitudes. Spectroscopy of the source extending from the optical to the K-band confirms the peculiarity of the spectrum: not only are the He lines stronger than expected for an O9.5V star but also there is no clear pattern of variability. The possibility that BD+53 2790 is an early-type analogue to He-strong stars (like theta^1 Ori C) is discussed., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 6 Tables

Massive X-ray binaries are usually classified depending on the properties of the donor star in classical, supergiant and Be X-ray binaries. The massive X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 does not fit in any of these groups, and deserves a detailed study to understand how the transfer of matter and the accretion on to the compact object take place. To this end we study an IUE spectrum of the donor and obtain a wind terminal velocity (v_inf) of ~350 km/s, which is abnormally slow for its spectral type. We also analyse here more than 9 years of available RXTE/ASM data. We study the long-term X-ray variability of the source and find it to be similar to that observed in the wind-fed supergiant system Vela X-1, reinforcing the idea that 4U 2206+54 is also a wind-fed system. We find a quasi-period decreasing from ~270 to ~130 d, noticed in previous works but never studied in detail. We discuss possible scenarios and conclude that long-term quasi-periodic variations in the mass-loss rate of the primary are probably driving such variability in the measured X-ray flux. We obtain an improved orbital period of 9.5591 d with maximum X-ray flux at MJD 51856.6. Our study of the orbital X-ray variability in the context of wind accretion suggests a moderate eccentricity around 0.15. Moreover, the low value of v_inf solves the long-standing problem of the relatively high X-ray luminosity for the unevolved nature of the donor, BD +53 2790, which is probably an O9.5 V star. We note that changes in v_inf and/or the mass-loss rate of the primary alone cannot explain the diferent patterns displayed by the orbital X-ray variability. We finally emphasize that 4U 2206+54, together with LS 5039, could be part of a new population of wind-fed HMXBs with main sequence donors, the natural progenitors of supergiant X-ray binaries. The majority of High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) behave as X-ray pulsars, revealing that they contain a magnetised neutron star. Among the four HMXBs not showing pulsations, and that do not show the characteristics of accreting black holes, there is the unusual HMXB 4U 2206+54. Here we present contemporaneous high-energy and radio observations of this system conducted with INTEGRAL and the VLA in order to unveil its nature. The high-energy spectra show clear indications of the presence of an absorption feature at ~32 keV. This is the third high-energy observatory which reveals marginal evidence of this feature, giving strong support to the existence of a cyclotron resonance scattering feature, which implies a magnetic field of 3.6 x 10^12 G. On the other hand, the source is not detected at centimetre radio wavelengths with a 3 sigma upper limit of 0.039 mJy. The expected radio emission for an accreting black hole in the low/hard state, inferred from X-ray flux measurements, would be at least 60 times greater than the measured upper limit. Both results firmly indicate that, in spite of the absence of pulsations, 4U 2206+54 hosts a magnetic accreting neutron star, the first one not to be observed as an X-ray pulsar., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. We report optical and infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations that identify the counterpart to the 358.6-s X-ray transient pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545 with a moderately reddened V=14.2 B0Ve star. This identification makes SAX J2103.5+4545 the Be/X-ray binary with the shortest orbital period known, Porb= 12.7 days. The amount of absorption to the system has been estimated to be Av=4.2+-0.3, which for such an early-type star implies a distance of about 6.5 kpc. The optical spectra reveal major and rapid changes in the strength and shape of the Halpha line. The Halpha line was initially observed as a double peak profile with the ratio of the intensities of the blue over the red peak greater than one (V/R > 1). Two weeks later this ratio reversed (V/R< 1). Subsequently, in less than a month, the emission ceased and Halpha appeared in absorption. This fast spectral variability is interpreted within the viscous decretion disc model and demonstrates the significant role of the neutron star on the evolution of the circumstellar disc around the Be star. We have used data from the Joint European Monitor (JEM-X) to perform an X-ray spectral and timing analysis of the 42-s transient pulsar EXO 2030+375 during an X-ray outburst. X-ray pulsations are clearly detected with an average pulse period of 41:66 +- 0:05 s and an average pulse fraction of 60%. The profile of the energy spectrum did not change appreciably throughout the X-ray outburst, although the source shows a slightly softer spectrum during periastron passage in the energy range 9–25 keV. The 5–25 keV X-ray luminosity changed by a factor of 2 throughout the observations, reaching a maximum value of 3x10^36 erg s^−1. These observations allowed us to verify the in-flight instrumental properties of the JEM-X Monitor. The imager on board INTEGRAL (IBIS) presently provides the most detailed sky images ever obtained at energies above 30 keV. The telescope is based on a coded aperture imaging system which allows to obtain sky images in a large field of view 29deg x 29deg with an angular resolution of 12'. The System Point Spread Function of the telescope and its detailed characteristics are here described along with the specific analysis algorithms used to derive the accurate point-like source locations. The derived location accuracy is studied using the first in-flight calibration data on strong sources for the IBIS/ISGRI system. The dependence of the calibrated location accuracy with the signal to noise ratio of the sources is presented. These preliminary studies demonstrate that the IBIS/ISGRI telescope and the standard scientific analysis software allow source localizations with accuracy at 90% confidence level better than 1' for sources with signal to noise ratios > 30 over the whole field of view, in agreement with the expected performances of the instrument., 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Lett (INTEGRAL special issue)

We present a first INTEGRAL observation of the 42s transient X-ray pulsar EXO 2030+375 with IBIS/ISGRI. The source was detected during Cyg X-1 observations in December 2002. We analyzed observations during the outburst period from 9 to 21 December 2002 with a total exposure time of ~770 kiloseconds. EXO 2030+375 was almost always detected during single ~30 minute exposures in the 18-45 energy bands. We present new optical - near-IR spectroscopic and photometric observations of the newly discovered galactic microquasar LS 5039, which indicate a classification for the mass donor in the system of O6.5V((f)). Optical spectroscopy and photometry shows no variability over a timescale of years, and we find no evidence of modulation by, or emission from the compact companion in these data. However significant photometric variability (~0.4 mag) is present in the H and K bands between 1995-2000. Such variability has been observed in other radio bright X-ray binaries where it has been attributed to synchrotron emission from the jet. However, given the non-thermal spectral index of the radio emission in LS 5039 this explanation appears unlikely, predicting a near-IR flux ~3 orders of magnitude too small to contribute significantly at such wavelengths. Nightly optical photometry over a 21 day period between 2000 May-June reveals variability at a level of a few hundredths of a magnitude, with no periodicity or long term trend visible. Likewise, while the radio lightcurves show moderate variability ( per cent of the mean flux density) we find no evidence of periodic modulation - Monte Carlo simulations constrain any such periodic variability to

The LEGRI Science Operation Center (SOC) is the single contact point between the MINISAT-01 Centro de Operaciones Cientificas (COC) located at Villafranca del Castillo (Madrid) and the LEGRI Consortium. Its architecture, operational procedures and associated software has been developed at the Universities of Valencia and Birmingham on the scope to define a integrated Data Analysis System, able to perform the daily follow-up of the instrument health, raw data files decompression and archiving activities (on-line and historical). Pointing and telecommand files generation are also SOC responsibilities. The aim of this paper is to report the SOC activities during the two years of LEGRI operations. Conclusions about the SOC architecture and procedures evolution on how to handle the operations for space-borne instrumentation, are also presented. Special attention has been paid to the operative evaluation of the pointing reconstruction solutions from the MINIS AT-01 Attitude Control System by comparing them with those obtained with the LEGRI Star Sensor. The analysis of one year of observations shows the good agreement between both sets of data. No systematic deviations have been found with an averaged standard deviation of 1 degree in alpha and delta coordinates. For most of the time the MINISAT pointing system is working slightly better than expected and within specifications.

LEGRI has been operating successfully on MINISAT-01 since its switch-on the 22nd of May 1997. HouseKeeping (HK) data have been continuously received for nearly two years by LEGRI SOC in Valencia, and subsequently checked on a daily basis and then stored for long term monitoring analysis. LEGRI HouseKeeping data include three critical operating parameters: temperature, power and polarisation voltages. Six temperature sensors are spread over the different LEGRI units: Detector Unit, Data Processing Unit, High Voltage Unit and Star Sensor. Voltages are measured at eight different points. Detector Unit temperature and polarisation voltage are the critical parameters for LEGRI operation. Solid state detectors are sensitive to changes not only in polarisation but also in temperature. Around one and a half million of measurements for each of the HK fourteen parameters have been recorded and analysed. The data show a very remarkable stability, within the expected margins, and the averages are very close to the optimal design values. Special attention has been paid to the detector polarisation voltages analysis with a mean value of 286 ±2V when the detectors are operating. Thermal control over all the LEGRI units shows a remarkable stability in their temperatures. On the detector plane a mean value of T det = 13 ± 2°C has been found. We can therefore conclude that LEGRI as a system has been operating within its optimal design conditions. We also want to point out the excellent performance of the MINISAT-01 thermal control system.

Two years after launch (04.21.97), LEGRI is operating on Minisat-01 in a LEO orbit. The LEGRI detector plane is formed by two type of gamma-ray solid state detectors: HgI2 and CdZnTe. Detectors are embedded in a box containing the FEE and DFE electronics. This box provides an effective detector passive shielding. Detector plane is multiplexed by a Coded Aperture System located at 54 cm and a Ta Collimator with a FCFOV of 22° and 2° angular resolution. The aim of this paper is to summarize the detector behaviour in three different time scales: before launch, during the in-orbit check-out period (IOC), and after two years of routine operation in space. Main results can be summarized as follows
