1. Emotion perception in schizophrenia: specific deficit or further evidence of generalized poor performance?

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine if an emotion perception deficit is responsible for schizophrenics' inability to perceive facial and vocal emotion. Control subjects and schizophrenics tested on facial and vocal emotion identification and discrimination using cross-validated and standardized instruments. They were also made to undergo neuropsychological control tests. Results indicate that a generalized performance deficit, rather than an emotion recognition deficit, is a more likely explanation for the differences observed between schizophrenics and normal individuals.

Abstract

The basis of the paradoxical reversal of temperature perception commonly described in ciguatera poisoning has never been defined. The sensations experienced are described as tingling, burning, 'dry ice-like', smarting, and 'electric'. Studies have demonstrated that these types of sensations are generated in C-polymodal nociceptor libers in skin and deep structures and the intensity of these sensations depends on the intensity of discharge in these fibers Ciguatoxin causes persistent sodium channel opening in nerve membrane resulting in oscillations in membrane potentials and runs of spontaneolis discharges. Studies on ciguatera victims in which their hands were immersed in water baths ranging from 0 [degrees] C to 50 [degrees] C, suggest the paradoxical sensory discomfort experienced is, most likely, a result of an exaggerated and intense nerve depolarization occurring in peripheral small A-delta myelinated and in particular, C-polymodal nociceptor fibers. Gross temperature perception was found to be intact in ciguatera poisoning and reversal of temperature does not occur. Abstract

The color vision of a male patient with red-green color-blindness was investigated by showing him various mixtures of red and green lights, compared to a consistent yellow light. He perceived all mixtures of red and green as equivalent to the one shade of yellow. This revealed that the individual was a dichromat, meaning he could only distinguish two of the three primary colors. It is believed that deficits in red-green color perception stem from abnormalities on the X chromosome. (Chromosomes are cell structures that carry the genes, or genetic codes; the X chromosome is a sex-linked chromosome.) The unusual arrangement of X-linked genes yields a recombination called a fusion gene. For the first time an individual's fusion gene was analyzed and its structure was related to the color pigments the patient could see.
