The impact resistance of layered polymer structures using polyvinyl butyral (PVB) in combination with Kevlar ® fabric and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were fabricated and tested. Methods of wet impregnation and hot-press impregnation and consolidation of fabric with PVB and UHMWPE were used to manufacture multilayer constructs. All sandwich constructs were fixed to the surface of ballistic clay and subject to a free drop-weight test with a conical impactor having a small contact area. All tests were made at the same impact energy of 9.3 J and velocity of 2.85 m/s. The change in the resistance force was recorded using a piezoelectric force sensor at the time intervals of 40 μs. Using experimental force-time history, the change in the impactor's velocity, the depth of impactor penetration, the energy transformation at various stages of impactor interaction with the sample, and other parameters were obtained. Three indicators were considered as the main criteria for the effectiveness of a sample's resistance to impact: (1) minimum deformation, bulging, of the panel backside at the moment of impact, (2) minimum absorption of impact energy per areal density, and (3) minimal or, better yet, no destruction of structural integrity. Under the tested conditions, the rigid Kevlar-PVB-Kevlar sandwich at the frontside and relatively soft but flexible UHMWPE-Kevlar-UHMWPE layers in the middle helped to localize and absorb impact energy, while the backside Kevlar-PVB-Kevlar sandwich minimized local bulging providing the best overall performance. The front layer damage area was very shallow and less than two impactor tip diameters. The backside bulging was also less than in any other tested configurations.

Poly( p -phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) are high-performance polymer materials largely used for body armor applications. Although composite structures from a combination of PPTA and UHMWPE have been created and described in the literature, the manufacture of layered composites from PPTA fabrics and UHMWPE films with UHMWPE film as an adhesive layer has not been reported. Such a new design can provide the obvious advantage of simple manufacturing technology. In this study, for the first time, we prepared PPTA fabrics/UHMWPE films laminate panels using plasma treatment and hot-pressing and examined their ballistic performance. Ballistic testing results indicated that samples with moderate interlayer adhesion between PPTA and UHMWPE layers exhibited enhanced performance. A further increase in interlayer adhesion showed a reverse effect. This finding implies that optimization of interface adhesion is essential to achieve maximum impact energy absorption through the delamination process. In addition, it was found that the stacking sequence of the PPTA and UHMWPE layers affected ballistic performance. Samples with PPTA as the outermost layer performed better than those with UHMWPE as the outermost layer. Furthermore, microscopy of the tested laminate samples showed that PPTA fibers exhibited shear cutting failure on the entrance side and tensile failure on the exit side of the panel. UHMWPE films exhibited brittle failure and thermal damage at high compression strain rate on the entrance side and tensile fracture on the exit side. For the first time, findings from this study reported in-field bullet testing results of PPTA/UHMWPE composite panels, which can provide important insights for designing, fabricating, and failure analysis of such composite structures for body armors.

This Perspective outlines recent progress and future directions for using machine learning (ML), a data-driven method, to address critical questions in the design, synthesis, processing, and characterization of biomacromolecules . The achievement of these tasks requires the navigation of vast and complex chemical and biological spaces, difficult to accomplish with reasonable speed. Using modern algorithms and supercomputers, quantum physics methods are able to examine systems containing a few hundred interacting species and determine the probability of finding them in a particular region of phase space, thereby anticipating their properties. Likewise, modern approaches in chemistry and biomolecular simulation, supported by high performance computing, have culminated in producing data sets of escalating size and intrinsically high complexity. Hence, using ML to extract relevant information from these fields is of paramount importance to advance our understanding of chemical and biomolecular systems. At the heart of ML approaches lie statistical algorithms, which by evaluating a portion of a given data set, identify, learn , and manipulate the underlying rules that govern the whole data set. The assembly of a quality model to represent the data followed by the predictions and elimination of error sources are the key steps in ML. In addition to a growing infrastructure of ML tools to address complex problems, an increasing number of aspects related to our understanding of the fundamental properties of biomacromolecules are exposed to ML. These fields, including those residing at the interface of polymer science and biology (i.e., structure determination, de novo design, folding, and dynamics), strive to adopt and take advantage of the transformative power offered by approaches in the ML domain, which clearly has the potential of accelerating research in the field of biomacromolecules.

Poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) is a high-performance polymer that has been utilized in a range of applications. Although PPTA fibers are widely used in various composite materials, laminar structures consisting of PPTA and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), are less reported. The difficulty in making such composite structures is in part due to the weakness of the interface formed between these two polymers. In this study, a layered structure was produced from PPTA fabrics and UHMWPE films via hot pressing. To improve the interlayer adhesion, oxygen plasma was used to treat the PPTA and the UHMWPE surfaces prior to lamination. It has been found that while plasma treatment on the UHMWPE surface brought about a moderate increase in interlayer adhesion (up to 14%), significant enhancement was achieved on the samples fabricated with plasma treated PPTA (up to 91%). It has been assumed that both surface roughening and the introduction of functional groups contributed to this improvement.

Spatial distributions are presented that quantitatively capture how polymer properties (e.g., segment alignment, density, and potential energy) vary with distance from nascent polymer crystals (nuclei) in prototypical polyethylene melts. It is revealed that the spatial extent of nuclei and their interfaces is metric-dependent as is the extent to which nucleus interiors are solid-like. As distance from a nucleus increases, some properties, such as density, decay to melt-like behavior more rapidly than polymer segment alignment, indicating that a polymer nucleus resides in a nematic-like droplet. This nematic-like droplet region coincides with enhanced formation of ordered polymer segments that are not part of the nucleus. It is more favorable to find nonconstituent ordered polymer segments near a nucleus than in the surrounding metastable melt, pointing to the possibility of one nucleus inducing the formation of other nuclei. In this vein, there is also a second region of enhanced ordering that lies along the nematic director of a nucleus, but beyond its nematic droplet and fold regions. These results indicate that crystal stacking, a key characteristic of lamellae in semicrystalline polymeric materials, begins to emerge during the earliest stages of polymer crystallization (i.e., crystal nucleation). More generally, the findings of this study provide a conceptual bridge between polymer crystal nucleation under nonflow and flow conditions and are used to rationalize previous results.

This study demonstrates that monodisperse entangled polymer melts crystallize via the formation of nanoscale nascent polymer crystals (i.e., nuclei) that exhibit substantial variability in terms of their constituent crystalline polymer chain segments (stems). More specifically, large-scale coarse-grain molecular simulations are used to quantify the evolution of stem length distributions and their properties during the formation of polymer nuclei in supercooled prototypical polyethylene melts. Stems can adopt a range of lengths within an individual nucleus (e.g., ∼1-10 nm) while two nuclei of comparable size can have markedly different stem distributions. As such, the attainment of chemically monodisperse polymer specimens is not sufficient to achieve physical uniformity and consistency. Furthermore, stem length distributions and their evolution indicate that polymer crystal nucleation (i.e., the initial emergence of a nascent crystal) is phenomenologically distinct from crystal growth. These results highlight that the tailoring of polymeric materials requires strategies for controlling polymer crystal nucleation and growth at the nanoscale.

We demonstrate that nascent polymer crystals (i.e., nuclei) are anisotropic entities with neither spherical nor cylindrical geometry, in contrast to previous assumptions. In fact, cylindrical, spherical, and other high symmetry geometries are thermodynamically unfavorable. Moreover, postcritical transitions are necessary to achieve the lamellae that ultimately arise during the crystallization of semicrystalline polymers. We also highlight how inaccurate treatments of polymer nucleation can lead to substantial errors (e.g., orders of magnitude discrepancies in predicted nucleation rates). These insights are based on quantitative analysis of over four million crystal clusters from the crystallization of prototypical entangled polyethylene melts. New comprehensive bottom-up models are needed to capture polymer nucleation.

High-performance fibers made of poly-(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) with high stiffness and high strength are widely used in body armor for protection due to their high degree of molecular chain alignment along the fiber direction. However, their poor mechanical properties in the transverse direction and low surface friction are undesirable for applications requiring resistance to ballistic impact. Here we provide a simple yet effective surface engineering strategy to improve both the transverse mechanical properties and the tribological property by coating PPTA fibers with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) embedded with silica nanoparticles. The coated-PPTA fiber shows remarkable enhancement in transverse mechanical properties including ~127% increase of Young's modulus, which is attributed to both the alignment of UHMWPE chains in the transverse direction and the embeded ceramic nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the surface friction of the coated fiber increases twofold as a result of the ceramic nanoparticles. In addition, the coated fibers exhibit an enhanced chemical resistance to external harsh environment. The improved transverse mechanical properties, surface frictional characteristics, and chemical resistance demonstrate that coating with UHMWPE and ceramic nanoparticles can be used as an effective approach to enhance the performance of PPTA and other high-performance polymer fibers for body armor applications.

This study reveals important features of polymer crystal formation at high-driving forces in entangled polymer melts based on simulations of polyethylene. First and in contrast to small-molecule crystallization, the heat released during polymer crystallization does not appreciably influence structural details of early-stage, crystalline clusters (crystal nuclei). Second, early-stage polymer crystallization (crystal nucleation) can occur without substantial chain-level relaxation and conformational changes. This study's results indicate that local structures and environments guide crystal nucleation in entangled polymer melts under high-driving force conditions. Given that such conditions are often used to process polyethylene, local structures and the separation of time scales associated with crystallization and chain-level processes are anticipated to be of substantial importance to processing strategies. This study highlights new research directions for understanding polymer crystallization.

This study aims to elucidate the relationship between the mechanical properties and microstructures of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) single fibers at the micro/nano scale. The skin-core structure of Kevlar® 29 fiber was revealed through a focused electron beam experiment inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) chamber. Cross sectional SEM images of the broken fiber showed that the thickness of the skin ranged from 300 to 800 nm and that the core region consisted of highly packed layers of fibrils. The skin and the core regions showed different mechanical behaviour and structural changes during nanoindentation and micro-tensile tests, indicating that the core region possessed higher stiffness, whereas the skin region could undergo more plastic deformation. Furthermore, micro-tensile testing results showed that the ultimate tensile strength, the elongation at failure, and the tensile toughness of single fibers could be significantly enhanced by cyclic loading. Such findings are important to understand the contribution of different microstructures of Kevlar® fibers to their mechanical performance, which in turn can be utilized to design high-performance fibers that are not limited by the trade-off between toughness and stiffness.

Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is of great interest as a next-generation body armor material because of its superior mechanical properties. However, such unique properties depend critically on its microscopic structure characteristics, including the degree of crystallinity, chain alignment, and morphology. Here, we present a highly aligned UHMWPE and its composite sheets containing uniformly dispersed boron nitride (BN) nanosheets. The dispersion of BN nanosheets into the UHMWPE matrix increases its mechanical properties over a broad temperature range. Experiments and simulation confirm that the alignment of chain segments in the composite matrix increases with temperature, leading to an improvement in mechanical properties at high temperature. Together with the large thermal conductivity of UHMWPE and BN, our findings serve to expand the application spectrum of highly aligned polymer nanocomposite materials for ballistic panels and body armor over a broad range of temperatures.
