Abstract

Plant–pollinator interactions are ecologically and economically important, and, as a result, their prediction is a crucial theoretical and applied goal for ecologists. Although various analytical methods are available, we still have a limited ability to predict plant–pollinator interactions. The predictive ability of different plant–pollinator interaction models depends on the specific definitions used to conceptualize and quantify species attributes (e.g., morphological traits), sampling effects (e.g., detection probabilities), and data resolution and availability. Progress in the study of plant–pollinator interactions requires conceptual and methodological advances concerning the mechanisms and species attributes governing interactions as well as improved modeling approaches to predict interactions. Current methods to predict plant–pollinator interactions present ample opportunities for improvement and spark new horizons for basic and applied research.

13. Fermentation profile and dynamics of bacterial communities in vetch-oat ensiled with a novel spray-dried inoculant.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine and compare the effectiveness of a novel spray-dried inoculant and a commercial freeze-dried additive on the fermentation quality, aerobic stability and bacterial population of vetch-oat silage. An entirely random design used a 3 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments, with and without lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculants and four fermentation periods. Physicochemical parameters, microbiological counts and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis on Nanopore MinION were conducted to characterize the ensiling process. Both LAB inoculants increased dry matter, crude protein, lactic, acetic and propionic acid contents, while reducing pH, neutral detergent fibre, ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen and ethanol concentrations compared to the control group. Overall, the native inoculant decreased the cell load of coliforms, yeasts and moulds. In addition, bio-inoculants enhanced the aerobic stability of vetch-oat intercrops. After ensiling, bacterial alpha diversity decreased noticeably; inoculation reduced the number of observed operational taxonomic units and the Shannon and Simpson indices. Notably, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus in the control group was lower than in treated silages, while the relative values of Staphylococcus increased sharply in the uninoculated group. In conclusion, the native strains showed promise for usage as a bio-inoculant in the ensiling of vetch-oat at a mixture rate of 1:1, producing an immediate impact as well as a favourable effect on the post-opening phase. This represents the first report on 16S rRNA gene-based nanopore metagenomics applied to the bacterial analysis of vetch-oat silage, providing a microbiological insight where native and commercial strains dominate the natural epiphytic community. Abstract

Los resultados del proyecto social permiten conocer la efectividad de sus recursos invertidos, a fin de determinar la rentabilidad en términos sociales a partir de la construcción de indicadores de campo propios del proyecto. En esa línea, esta investigación determinó el impacto del proyecto “Warmikunapa allin rurayninkuna” “Mujeres Innovando talentos”, ejecutado por el Organismo no gubernamental (ONG) World Visión en los distritos Paucará y Acobamba de la Región Huancavelica. El estudio aborda el enfoque cualitativo desarrollado por el método de “Experiencia Basada en la Práctica” (EBP); mediante la aplicación de encuestas a un grupo de 70 beneficiarias, levantando información concerniente en los temas de interés y objetivos del proyecto; tal es el “Empoderamiento económico en el bienestar de las familias y desarrollo emocional de las mujeres”. Los resultados revelaron un impacto positivo al contar con el 75% de las familias que lograron un bienestar gracias al desarrollo de capacidades empresariales, planes de negocio, técnicas de producción y otras acciones, mejorando sus ingresos económicos en un 35%, la cual permitió nuevos emprendimientos y la independencia de mujeres víctimas de violencia psicológica, física y sexual. Por consiguiente, el proyecto contribuyó al empoderamiento económico de las mujeres, alcanzando un nivel considerable de rentabilidad en términos sociales.

20. Salt marsh fragmentation in a mesotidal estuary: Implications for medium to long-term management

Abstract

During the last decades many salt marshes worldwide have suffered important losses in their extent and associated ecosystem services. The salt marshes of San Vicente de la Barquera estuary (N Spain) are a clear example of this, with a drastic reduction in vegetation surface over the last 60 years. This paper provides insights into the main factors controlling salt marsh functioning in sheltered estuarine areas. Regional and local factors have been disaggregated to identify the main drivers controlling the functioning of the salt marsh to develop appropriate management measures according to the evolution of the system. These factors have been studied in their spatial context through detailed maps of change in vegetation cover combined with topographic data obtained from UAV and RTK-DGPS surveys. The results demonstrate that in this estuary the salt marsh area is declining following a fragmentation process. No clear pattern of vegetation loss/gain with elevation has been identified. However, the results point to increased hydrodynamic stress in the area, with stronger currents inside the estuary. This is probably the major factor responsible for the decline of the salt marshes in the San Vicente de la Barquera estuary. Furthermore, several human interventions during the 20th century (local drivers) have also probably contributed to a lower resilience against SLR (regional driver). This work demonstrates that both natural and human drivers of change need to be considered when characterizing the evolution of salt marshes, wherever efficient management strategies need to be designed.

El dengue es una enfermedad viral que, a nivel mundial, está considerada como la de mayor importancia médica (1) por su carácter endémicoepidémico, transmitida por mosquitos del género Aedes, principalmente por Aedes aegypti, que constituye hoy la arbovirosis más importante a nivel mundial en términos de morbilidad, mortalidad y afectación económica (2). Es causado por cuatro serotipos del virus del dengue (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 o DEN-4) estrechamente relacionados con los serotipos del género Flavivirus, de la familia Flaviviridae (1). Los serotipos no desencadenan inmunidad cruzada; es decir, que una persona puede infectarse y enfermar hasta cuatro veces (3). El Dengue en Colombia es una enfermedad de notificación rutinaria obligatoria, porque es objeto de Vigilancia y control epidemiológico a través del sistema nacional de vigilancia en salud pública–Sivigila. Las manifestaciones neuro-psiquiátricas y neurocognitivas son poco mencionadas en la literatura, en este artículo se expone una revisión sistemática en tres bases de datos Pubmed, Scopus y Cochrane, con artículos de los últimos 10 años, que incluyen manifestaciones neuropsiquiátricas o neurocognitivas en pacientes que cursaron con infección por el virus del dengue. Dengue is a viral disease that worldwide, is considered to be of the greatest medical importance due to its endemic-epidemic nature, transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, mainly by Aedes aegypti, which today constitutes the most important arbovirosis to world level in terms of morbidity, mortality and economic impact. It is caused by four dengue virus serotypes (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 or DEN-4) closely related to the serotypes of the genus Flavivirus, of the Flaviviridae family. Serotypes do not trigger cross immunity; therefore, a person can become infected and become ill up to four times. Dengue in Colombia is a mandatory routine notification disease, because it is subject to surveillance and epidemiological control through the national public health surveillance system – Sivigila Neuro-psychiatric and neurocognitive manifestations are little mentioned in the literature, this article presents a systematic review in three databases: Pubmed, Scopus and Cochrane, with articles from the last 10 years, which include neuropsychiatric or neurocognitive manifestations in patients. that were infected with the dengue virus.

Abstract

Background: Low lung function has been associated with increased body mass index (BMI). The aim of this study was to investigate whether the effect of BMI on lung function is mediated by DNA methylation. Methods: We used individual data from 285,495 participants in four population-based cohorts: the European Community Respiratory Health Survey, the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, the Swiss Study on Air Pollution and Lung Disease in Adults, and the UK Biobank. We carried out Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses in two steps using a two-sample approach with SNPs as instrumental variables (IVs) in each step. In step 1 MR, we estimated the causal effect of BMI on peripheral blood DNA methylation (measured at genome-wide level) using 95 BMI-associated SNPs as IVs. Abstract

Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and Health in All Policies (HiAP) are policy tools used to include health considerations in decision-making processes across sectors such as transportation, education, and criminal justice that can play a role in improving health and equity. This article summarizes proceedings from an international convening of HIA and HiAP experts held in July 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. The presentations and panel discussions included different models, best practices, and lessons learned, including from government, international banks, think tanks, and academia. Participants discussed ideas from around the world for cross-sector collaboration to advance health. The convening covered the following topics: community engagement, building greater understanding of and support for HiAP, and exploring how mandates for HIA and HiAP approaches may advance health and equity.

Abstract

Tropical forests and coral reefs host a disproportionately large share of global biodiversity and provide ecosystem functions and services used by millions of people. Yet, ongoing climate change is leading to an increase in frequency and magnitude of extreme climatic events in the tropics, which, in combination with other local human disturbances, is leading to unprecedented negative ecological consequences for tropical forests and coral reefs. Here, we provide an overview of how and where climate extremes are affecting the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth and summarize how interactions between global, regional and local stressors are affecting tropical forest and coral reef systems through impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. We also discuss some key challenges and opportunities to promote mitigation and adaptation to a changing climate at local and global scales. Abstract

Recently, spatial organization in salt marshes was shown to contain vital information on system resilience. However, in salt marshes, it remains poorly understood what shaping processes regulate spatial patterns in soil or vegetation properties that can be detected in the surface reflectance signal. In this case study we compared the effect on surface reflectance of four major shaping processes: Flooding duration, wave forcing, competition, and creek formation. We applied the ProSail model to a pioneering salt marsh species (Spartina anglica) to identify through which vegetation and soil properties these processes affected reflectance, and used in situ reflectance data at the leaf and canopy scale and satellite data on the canopy scale to identify the spatial patterns in the biophysical characteristics of this salt marsh pioneer in spring. Our results suggest that the spatial patterns in the pioneer zone of the studied salt marsh are mainly caused by the effect of flood duration. Flood duration explained over three times as much of the variation in canopy properties as wave forcing, competition, or creek influence. It particularly affects spatial patterns through canopy properties, especially the leaf area index, while leaf characteristics appear to have a relatively minor effect on reflectance.

Abstract

Background: Methadone and buprenorphine are the most prevalent types of opioid maintenance programs in Andalusia. The main objective is comparing the functional status of patients with pharmacological opioid maintenance treatments according to different socio-demographic characteristic, health and disabilities domains and sexual difficulties. Methods: A total of 593 patients from the Andalusia community, 329 were undergoing methadone treatment and 264 were undergoing buprenorphine treatment. The patients were interviewed by socio-demographic and opioid-related variables, assessed by functioning, disability and health domains (WHODAS 2.0.) and for sexual problems (PRSexDQ-SALSEX). Results: We found significant differences in the socio-demographic and the opioid-related variables as the onset of opioid use, being on previous maintenance programs, opioid intravenous use, the length of previous maintenance programs, polydrug use and elevated seroprevalence rates (HCV and HIV) between the methadone group and the buprenorphine group. Regarding health and disability domains there were differences in the Understanding and communication domain, Getting around domain, Participation in society domain and in the WHODAS 2.0. simple and complex score, favoring buprenorphine-treated patients. The methadone group referred elevated sexual impairments compared with the buprenorphine group. Opioid-related variables as seroprevalence rates, other previous lifetime maintenance program, the daily opioid dosage and the daily alcohol use are the most discriminative variables between both groups. Participation in society variables and sexual problems were the most important clinical variables in distinguishing the methadone group from the buprenorphine group regarding their functional status. Conclusions: The methadone group showed higher prevalence in opioid dependence-related variables, elevated disabilities in participation in society activities and sexual problems compared with the buprenorphine group. This study shows the importance of carry out a functional evaluation in the healthcare follow-up, especially in those areas related with social activity and with sexual problems. Abstract

Seagrass meadows form highly productive and valuable ecosystems in the marine environment. Throughout the year, seagrass meadows are exposed to abiotic and biotic variations linked to (i) seasonal fluctuations, (ii) short-term stress events such as, e.g., local nutrient enrichment, and (iii) small-scale disturbances such as, e.g., biomass removal by grazing. We hypothesized that short-term stress events and small-scale disturbances may affect seagrass chance for survival in temperate latitudes. To test this hypothesis we focused on seagrass carbon reserves in the form of starch stored seasonally in rhizomes, as these have been defined as a good indicator for winter survival. Twelve Zostera noltei meadows were monitored along a latitudinal gradient in Western Europe to firstly assess the seasonal change of their rhizomal starch content. Secondly, we tested the effects of nutrient enrichment and/or biomass removal on the corresponding starch content by using a short-term manipulative field experiment at a single latitude in the Netherlands. At the end of the growing season, we observed a weak but significant linear increase of starch content along the latitudinal gradient from south to north. This agrees with the contention that such reserves are essential for regrowth after winter, which is more severe in the north. In addition, we also observed a weak but significant positive relationship between starch content at the beginning of the growing season and past winter temperatures. This implies a lower regrowth potential after severe winters, due to diminished starch content at the beginning of the growing season. Short-term stress and disturbances may intensify these patterns, because our manipulative experiments show that when nutrient enrichment and biomass loss co-occurred at the end of the growing season, Z. noltei starch content declined.
