Search

While the search of high Tc superconductivity was driven mostly by trial and error methodology searching for novel materials, here we provide a quasi-first-principle quantum theory for engineering superconductivity in artificial high-Tc superlattices (AHTS) with period d, ranging from 5.28 down to 3 nanometers, made of superconducting quantum wells of variable thickness L. An important feature of our quantum design is the key role of the interface internal electric field giving Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the nanoscale quantum superconducting building blocks. By tuning the geometrical conformational parameter L/d around its magic ratio 2/3 we predict the superconducting dome of Tc versus doping characteristic of unconventional superconductors. Quantum size effects, controlled by L/d, change the energy width and splitting of two quantum subbands formed by the electronic space charge confined in superconducting nano-layers. The theoretical superconducting dome Tc versus charge density controlled by the Fano-Feshbach resonance between two superconducting gaps has been able to predict experimental results on cuprate AHTS by tuning the geometry of superlattices of quantum wells made of superconducting layers (S) of thickness L of modulation doped stoichiometric Mott insulator La2CuO4 with no chemical dopants, with interface space charge confined within normal metal (N) overdoped cuprate layers, Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2211.11547

Nonadiabatic effects in the electron-phonon coupling are important whenever the ratio between the phononic and the electronic energy scales, the adiabatic ratio, is non negligible. For superconducting systems, this gives rise to additional diagrams in the superconducting self-energy, the vertex and cross corrections. In this work we explore these corrections in a two-dimensional single-band system through the crossover between the weak-coupling BCS and strong-coupling Bose-Einstein regimes. By focusing on the pseudogap phase, we identify the parameter range in which the pairing amplitude is amplified by nonadiabatic effects and map them throughout the BCS-BEC crossover. These effects become stronger as the system is driven deeply in the crossover regime, for phonon frequencies of the order of the hopping energy and for large enough electron-phonon coupling. Finally, we provide the phase space regions in which the effects of nonadiabaticity are more relevant for unconventional superconductors., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study the amplitude and phase fluctuations of the Ginzburg-Landau quasi-order parameter for superconductors in two spatial dimensions. Starting from the mean-field critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}0}$, we calculate the beyond-mean-field critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ by including thermal fluctuations of the quasi-order parameter within the Gaussian level. Moreover, from our beyond-mean field results, we derive the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical temperature $T_{\rm BKT}$, which takes into account topological vortex-antivortex excitations in the phase fluctuations as well as the amplitude fluctuations, to obtain the shifts of transition temperatures. We elucidate how the Gaussian thermal fluctuations and phase fluctuations associated with vortex excitations affect thermodynamic properties by determining the $H$-$T$ phase diagram for a type-II superconductor and computing the critical behaviors of the heat capacity, which are experimentally accessible, allowing the characterization of the cascade of different kinds of fluctuations in 2D superconductors., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in ultra-thin NbN films is investigated in the presence of weak perpendicular magnetic fields. A jump in the phase stiffness at the BKT transition is detected up to 5 G, while the BKT features are smeared between 5 G and 50 G, disappearing altogether at 100 G, where conventional current-voltage behaviour is observed. Our findings demonstrate that weak magnetic fields, insignificant in bulk systems, deeply affect our ultra-thin system, promoting a crossover from Halperin-Nelson fluctuations to a BCS-like state with Ginzburg-Landau fluctuations, as the field increases. This behavior is related to field-induced free vortices that screen the vortex-antivortex interaction and smear the BKT transition., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures

Recent experiments on 2D superconductors allow the characterization of the critical temperature and of the phase diagram across the BCS-BEC crossover as a function of density. We obtain from these experiments the microscopic parameters of the superconducting state at low temperatures by the BCS mean-field approach. For Li$_x$ZrNCl, the extracted parameters are used to evaluate the superconducting phase stiffness and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) critical temperature throughout the BCS-BEC crossover, by implementing the corresponding Renormalization Group (RG) approach. In this way, we make a quantitative test of the predictive power of the BKT theory for evaluating the critical temperature. The RG flow equations turn out to give a sizable renormalization of the phase stiffness and of the critical temperature, which is crucial to obtain a satisfactory agreement between the BKT theory and the experiments, in particular in the BCS-BEC crossover regime. We predict the temperature range where phase stiffness renormalization can be measured in Li$_x$ZrNCl across the BCS-BEC crossover. Contrary to other microscopic theories of superconductivity, we find that the BKT theory can be exploited to evaluate quantitatively the critical temperature of 2D superconductors in different pairing regimes., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

In superconductivity, a surge of interests in enhancing $T_{\rm c}$ is ever mounting, where a recent focus is toward multi-band superconductivity. In $T_{\rm c}$ enhancements specific to two-band cases, especially around the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover considered here, we have to be careful about how quantum fluctuations affect the many-body states, i.e., particle-hole fluctuations suppressing the pairing for attractive interactions. Here we explore how to circumvent the suppression by examining multichannel pairing interactions in two-band systems. With the Gor'kov-Melik-Barkhudarov (GMB) formalism for particle-hole fluctuations in a continuous space, we look into the case of a deep dispersive band accompanied by an incipient heavy-mass (i.e., quasi-flat) band. We find that, while the GMB corrections usually suppress $T_{\rm c}$ significantly, this in fact competes with the enhanced pairing arising from the heavy band, with the trade-off leading to a peaked structure in $T_{\rm c}$ against the band-mass ratio when the heavy band is incipient. The system then plunges into a strong-coupling regime with the GMB screening vastly suppressed. This occurs prominently when the chemical potential approaches the bound state lurking just below the heavy band, which can be viewed as a Fano-Feshbach resonance, with its width governed by the pair-exchange interaction. The diagrammatic structure comprising particle-particle and particle-hole channels is heavily entangled, so that the emergent Fano-Feshbach resonance dominates all the channels, suggesting a universal feature in multiband superconductivity., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, Accepted version for Physical Review B

In the pursuit of higher critical temperature of superconductivity, quasi-flat electronic bands and van Hove singularities in two dimensions (2D) have emerged as a potential approach to enhance Cooper pairing on the basis of mean-field expectations. However, these special electronic features suppress the superfluid stiffness and, hence, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in 2D superconducting systems, leading to the emergence of a significant pseudogap regime due to superconducting fluctuations. In the strong-coupling regime, one finds that superfluid stiffness is inversely proportional to the superconducting gap, which is the predominant factor contributing to the strong suppression of superfluid stiffness. Here we reveal that the aforementioned limitation is avoided in a 2D superconducting electronic system with a quasi-flat electronic band with a strong pairing strength coupled to a deep band with weak electronic pairing strength. Owing to the multiband effects, we demonstrate a screening-like mechanism that circumvents the suppression of the superfluid stiffness. We report the optimal conditions for achieving a large enhancement of the BKT transition temperature and a substantial shrinking of the pseudogap regime by tuning the intraband couplings and the pair-exchange coupling between the two band-condensates.

Two-dimensional superconductors and electron-hole superfluids in van der Waals heterostructures having tunable valence and conduction bands in the electronic spectrum are emerging as rich platforms to investigate novel quantum phases and topological phase transitions. In this work, by adopting a mean-field approach considering multiple-channel pairings and the Kosterlitz-Nelson criterion, we demonstrate giant amplifications of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature and a shrinking of the pseudogap for small energy separations between the conduction and valence bands and small density of carriers in the conduction band. The presence of the holes in the valence band, generated by intra-band and pair-exchange couplings, contributes constructively to the phase stiffness of the total system, adding up to the phase stiffness of the conduction band electrons that is boosted as well, due to the presence of the valence band electrons. This strong cooperative effect avoids the suppression of the BKT transition temperature for low density of carriers, that occurs in single-band superconductors where only the conduction band is present. Thus, we predict that in this regime, multi-band superconducting and superfluid systems with valence and conduction bands can exhibit much larger BKT critical temperatures with respect to single-band and single-condensate systems., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the correlations acting within the layers in a superfluid system of electron-hole spatially separated layers. In this system of quasi-dipoles, the dominant correlations are Hartree--Fock. We find in the BEC regime of the superfluid where screening is negligible, that the effect of the correlations on superfluid properties is also negligible. However, in the BCS-BEC crossover regime, where the screening plays a crucial role, we find that the superfluid gap is significantly weakened because the correlations significantly boost the number of low-energy particle-hole excitations participating in the screening process. Finally, the intralayer correlations are found in this system to suppress a predicted phenomenon in which the average pair size passes through a minimum as the crossover regime is traversed. In the presence of intralayer correlations, the minimum is either extremely weak or completely absent.

Two-band electronic structures with a valence and a conduction band separated by a tunable energy gap and with pairing of electrons in different channels can be relevant to investigate the properties of two-dimensional multiband superconductors and electron-hole superfluids, as monolayer FeSe, recently discovered superconducting bilayer graphene, and double-bilayer graphene electron-hole systems. This electronic configuration allows also to study the coexistence of superconductivity and charge density waves in connection with underdoped cuprates and transition metal dichalcogenides. By using a mean-field approach to study the system above mentioned, we have obtained numerical results for superconducting gaps, chemical potential, condensate fractions, coherence lengths, and superconducting mean-field critical temperature, considering a tunable band gap and different filling of the conduction band, for parametric choice of the pairing interactions. By tuning these quantities, the electrons redistribute among valence and conduction band in a complex way, leading to a new physics with respect to single-band superconductors, such as density induced and band-selective BCS-BEC crossover, quantum phase transitions, and hidden criticalities. At finite temperature, this phenomenon is also responsible for the non-monotonic behavior of the superconducting gaps resulting in a superconducting-normal state reentrant transition, without the need of disorder or magnetic effects., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

The toolbox to study the Universe grew on 14 September 2015 when the LIGO-Virgo collaboration heard a signal from two colliding black holes between 30-250 Hz. Since then, many more gravitational waves have been detected as detectors increased sensitivity. However, the current detector design sensitivity curves still have a lower cut-off of 10 Hz. To detect even lower-frequency gravitational-wave signals, the Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna will use an array of seismic stations in a permanently shadowed crater. It aims to detect the differential between the elastic response of the Moon and the suspended inertial sensor proof mass motion induced by gravitational waves. A cryogenic superconducting inertial sensor is under development that aims for fm/rtHz sensitivity or better down to 1 Hz and is planned to be deployed in seismic stations. Here, we describe the current state of research towards the inertial sensor, its applications and additional auxiliary technologies in the payload of the lunar gravitational-wave detection mission.

Superconducting nanofilms are tunable systems that can host a 3D-2D dimensional crossover, leading to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) superconducting transition approaching the 2D regime. Reducing further the dimensionality, from 2D to quasi-1D, superconducting nanostructures with disorder can generate quantum and thermal phase slips (PS) of the order parameter. Both BKT and PS are complex phase fluctuation phenomena of difficult experimental detection. Here, we have characterized superconducting NbN nanofilms thinner than 15 nm, on different substrates, by temperature dependent resistivity and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. Our measurements have evidenced clear features related to the emergence of BKT transition and PS events. The contemporary observation in the same system of BKT transition and PS events and their tunable evolution in temperature and thickness, has been explained as due to the nano-conducting paths forming in a granular NbN system. In one of the investigated samples we have been able to trace and characterize the continuous evolution in temperature from quantum to thermal PS. Our analysis has established that the detected complex phase phenomena are strongly related to the interplay between the typical size of the nano-conductive paths and the superconducting coherence length., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

We theoretically investigate the superfluid-normal-state Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in a binary mixture of bosonic atoms with Rabi coupling under balanced densities. We find the nonmonotonic behavior of the transition temperature with respect to the intercomponent coupling and amplification of the transition temperature for finite values of Rabi coupling, but for small intracomponent couplings. We develop the Nelson-Kosterlitz renormalization-group equations in the two-component Bose mixture and obtain the Nelson-Kosterlitz criterion modified by a fractional parameter, which is responsible for half-integer vortices, and by Rabi coupling. Adopting the renormalization-group approach, we clarify the dependence of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature on the Rabi coupling and the intercomponent coupling. Analysis of the first and second sound velocities also reveals the suppression of quasicrossing of the two sound modes with a finite Rabi coupling in the low-temperature regime. Understanding the behaviour of vortices under nanoscale confinement in superconducting circuits is of importance for development of superconducting electronics and quantum technologies. Using numerical simulations based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory for non-homogeneous superconductivity in the presence of magnetic fields, we detail how lateral confinement organises vortices in a long superconducting nanostripe, and present a phase diagram of vortex configurations as a function of the stripe width and magnetic field. We discuss why average vortex density is reduced and reveal that confinement also has profound influence on vortex dynamics in the dissipative regime under sourced electrical current, mapping out transitions between asynchronous and synchronous vortex rows crossing the nanostripe as the current is varied. Synchronous crossings are of particular interest, since they cause single-mode modulations in the voltage drop along the stripe in a high (typically GHz-to-THz) frequency range., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

A supersolid, a counter-intuitive quantum state in which a rigid lattice of particles flows without resistance, has to date not been unambiguously realised. Here we reveal a supersolid ground state of excitons in a double-layer semiconductor heterostructure over a wide range of layer separations outside the focus of recent experiments. This supersolid conforms to the original Chester supersolid with one exciton per supersolid site, as distinct from the alternative version reported in cold-atom systems of a periodic modulation of the superfluid density. We provide the phase diagram augmented by the supersolid. This new phase appears at layer separations much smaller than the predicted exciton normal solid, and it persists up to a solid--solid transition where the quantum phase coherence collapses. The ranges of layer separations and exciton densities in our phase diagram are well within reach of the current experimental capabilities.

We investigate a Josephson junction in an electron-hole superfluid in a double layer TMD heterostructure. Observation of a critical tunneling current is a clear signature of superfluidity. In addition, we find the BCS-BEC crossover physics in the narrow barrier region controls the critical current across the entire system. The corresponding critical velocity, which is measurable in this system, has a maximum when the excitations pass from bosonic to fermionic. Remarkably, this occurs for the density at the boundary of the BEC to BCS-BEC crossover regime determined from the condensate fraction. This provides, for the first time in a semiconductor system, an experimental way to determine the position of this boundary.

The Lunar Gravitational--Wave Antenna is a proposed low-frequency gravitational-wave detector on the Moon surface. It will be composed of an array of high-end cryogenic superconducting inertial sensors (CSISs). A cryogenic environment will be used in combination with superconducting materials to open up pathways to low-loss actuators and sensor mechanics. CSIS revolutionizes the (cryogenic) inertial sensor field with a modelled displacement sensitivity at 0.5 Hz of 3 orders of magnitude better than the current state-of-the-art. It will allow the Lunar Gravitational-Wave Antenna to be sensitive below 1 Hz, down to 1 mHz and it will also be employed in the forthcoming Einstein Telescope --a third-generation gravitational-wave detector which will make use of cryogenic technologies and that will have an enhanced sensitivity below 10 Hz. Moreover, CSIS seismic data could also be employed to obtain new insights about the Moon interior and what we can call the Selene-physics.

Cu K edge X-ray absorption spectra of overdoped superconducting $YSr_2Cu_{2.75}Mo_{0.25}O_{7.54}$ and $Sr_2CuO_{3.3}$ show a remarkably strong correlation of their superconductivity with the local dynamics of their Cu-Sr and Cu-apical-O pairs. This finding that the entire alkaline earth cation-apical O "dielectric" layer has an active role in the unusual electronic properties of cuprates has not been previously considered and has far reaching implications. We develop this idea of a possible role for the apical oxygen charge dynamics via a soft mode of the Sr by applying Kuramoto's synchronization technique to exact diagonalization calculations of two neighboring Cu-apical O pairs bridged by Sr and a planar O atom. These calculations show a first order phase transition to a synchronized state of the Internal Quantum Tunneling Polarons (IQTPs) in which a fraction of the hole originally confined to the apical O atoms of the cluster is transferred onto the planar O. This combination of experimental results and theory demonstrates that the Sr-O dielectric layer of cuprates most likely plays an important role in high temperature superconductivity via its collective charge dynamics that extends into the $CuO_2$ conducting planes., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

A major open topic in cuprates is the interplay between the lattice and electronic dynamics and the importance of their coupling to the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC). As evidenced by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure experiments (EXAFS), anharmonic structural effects are correlated with the charge dynamics and the transition to a superconducting phase in different HTSC compounds. Here we describe how structural anharmonic effects can be coupled to electronic and lattice dynamics in cuprate systems by performing the exact diagonalization of a prototype anharmonic many-body Hamiltonian on a relevant six-atom cluster and show that the EXAFS results can be understood as a Kuramoto synchronization between coupled internal quantum tunneling polarons associated with the two-site distribution of the copper-apical-oxygen ($Cu-O_{ap}$) pair in the dynamic structure. Furthermore, we find that this first order, anti-phase synchronization transition can be fine tuned by temperature and anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations, and promotes the pumping of charge, initially stored at the apical oxygen reservoirs, into the copper-oxide planes. Simultaneously, the internal quantum tunneling polaron extends to the copper-planar-oxygen ($Cu-O_{pl}$) pair. All these findings support an interpretation of the EXAFS data in terms of an effective, quantum mechanical triple-well-potential, which accurately represents the anti-phase synchronization of apical oxygens displacements and lattice-assisted charge transfer to the $CuO_2$ plane., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. The control of Covid 19 epidemics by public health policy in Italy during the first and the second epidemic waves has been driven by using reproductive number Rt(t) to identify the supercritical (percolative), the subcritical (arrested), separated by the critical regime. Here we show that to quantify the Covid-19 spreading rate with containment measures (CSRwCM) there is a need of a 3D expanded parameter space phase diagram built by the combination of Rt(t) and doubling time Td(t). In this space we identify the dynamics of the Covid-19 dynamics Italy and its administrative Regions. The supercritical regime is mathematically characterized by i) the power law of Td vs. [Rt(t)-1] and ii) the exponential behaviour of Td vs. time, either in the first and in the second wave. The novel 3D phase diagram shows clearly metastable states appearing before and after the second wave critical regime. for loosening quarantine and tracing of actives cases. The metastable states are precursors of the abrupt onset of a next nascent wave supercritical regime. This dynamic description allows epidemics predictions needed by policymakers to activate non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), a key issue for avoiding economical losses, reduce fatalities and avoid new virus variant during vaccination campaign, Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We investigate single-particle excitation properties in the normal state of a two-band superconductor or superfluid throughout the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) crossover, within the many-body T-matrix approximation for multi-channel pairing fluctuations. We address the single-particle density of states and the spectral functions consisting of two contributions associated with a waekly interacting deep band and a strongly interacting shallow band, relevant for iron-based multiband superconductors and multicomponent fermionic superfluids. We show how the pseudogap state in the shallow band is hidden by the deep band contribution throughout the two-band BCS-BEC crossover. So far most of the analysis of coronavirus 2020 epidemic data has been focusing on a short-time window and consequently a quantitative test of statistical physical laws of Coronavirus Epidemics with Containment Measures (CEwCM) is currently lacking. Here we report a quantitative analysis of CEwCM over 230 days, covering the full-time lapse of the first epidemic wave. We use a 3D phase diagram tracking the simultaneous evolution of the doubling time Td(t) and reproductive number Rt(t) showing that this expanded parameter space is needed for biological physics of CEwCP. We have verified that in the supercritical [Rt(t)>1, Td(t)<40 days] regime i) the curve Z(t) of total infected cases follows the growth rate called Ostwald law; ii) the doubling time follows the exponential law Td(t)=A exp((t-t0)/s) as a function of time and iii) the power law Td(t)=C(Rt(t)-1)^-n is verified with the exponent n depending on the definition of Rt(t). The log-log plots Td(t) versus (Rt-1) of the second 2020 epidemic wave unveil in the subcritical regime [Td(t)>100 days] arrested metastable phases with Rt>1 where Td(t) was kept constant followed by its explosion and its containment following the same power law as in the first wave, Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Excitons are promising candidates for generating superfluidity and Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) in solid state devices, but an enabling material platform with in-built bandstructure advantages and scaling compatibility with industrial semiconductor technology is lacking. Here we predict that spatially indirect excitons in a lattice-matched strained Si/Ge bilayer embedded into a germanium-rich SiGe crystal, would lead to observable mass-imbalanced electron-hole superfluidity and BEC. Holes would be confined in a compressively strained Ge quantum well and electrons in a lattice-matched tensile strained Si quantum well. We envision a device architecture that does not require an insulating barrier at the Si/Ge interface, since this interface offers a type II band alignment. Thus the electrons and holes can be kept very close but strictly separate, strengthening the electron-hole pairing attraction while preventing fast electron-hole recombination. The band alignment also allows a one-step procedure for making independent contacts to the electron and hole layers, overcoming a significant obstacle to device fabrication. We predict superfluidity at experimentally accessible temperatures of a few Kelvin and carrier densities up to $\sim 6\times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$, while the large imbalance of the electron and hole effective masses can lead to exotic superfluid phases.

We demonstrate the rise-and-fall of multiple pseudogaps in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein-condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover in two-band fermionic systems having different pairing strengths in the deep band and in the shallow band. The striking features of this phenomenon are an unusual many-body screening of pseudogap state and the importance of pair-exchange couplings, which induces multiple pseudogap formation in the two bands. The multi-band configuration suppresses pairing fluctuations and the pseudogap opening in the strongly-interacting shallow band at small pair-exchange couplings by screening effects, with possible connection to the pseudogap phenomenology in iron based superconductors. On the other hand, the multiple pseudogap mechanism accompanies with the emergence of binary preformed Cooper pairs originating from interplay between intra-band and pair-exchange couplings., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures and Supplemental Material (5 pages, 5 figures)

The Covid-19 epidemic of the novel coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome SARS - CoV-2) has been spreading around the world. While different containment policies using non-pharmaceutical interventions have been applied, their efficiency are not known quantitatively. We show that the doubling time Td(t) with the success s factor, the characteristic time of the exponential growth of Td(t) in the arrested regime, is a reliable tool for early predictions of epidemic spread time evolution and it provides a quantitative measure of the success of different containment measures. The efficiency of the containment policy Lockdown case Finding mobile Tracing (LFT) using mandatory mobile contact tracing is much higher than the Lockdown Stop and Go (LSG) policy proposed by the Imperial College team in London. A very low s factor was reached by LFT policy giving the shortest time width of the dome of positive case curve and the lowest number of fatalities. The LFT policy has been able to reduce by a factor 100 the number of fatalities in the first 100 days of the Covid-19 epidemic, to reduce the time width of the Covid-19 pandemic dome by a factor 2.5 and to rapidly stop new outbreaks avoiding the second wave, Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

Here, we focus on the data analysis of the growth of epidemic spread of Covid-19 in countries where different policies of containment were activated. It is known that the growth of pandemic spread at its threshold is exponential, but it is not known how to quantify the success of different containment policies. We identify that a successful approach gives an arrested phase regime following the Ostwald growth, where, over the course of time, one phase transforms into another metastable phase with a similar free energy as observed in oxygen interstitial diffusion in quantum complex matter and in crystallization of proteins. We introduce the s factor which provides a quantitative measure of the efficiency and speed of the adopted containment policy, which is very helpful not only to monitor the Covid-19 pandemic spread but also for other countries to choose the best containment policy. The results show that a policy based on joint confinement, targeted tests, and tracking positive cases is the most rapid pandemic containment policy; in fact, we found values of 9, 5, and 31 for the success s factor for China, South Korea, and Italy, respectively, where the lowest s factor indicates the best containment policy, Comment: 2 figures, 7 pages

We investigate pairing fluctuation effects in a two band fermionic system, where a shallow band in the Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer--Bose--Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover regime is coupled with a weakly interacting deep band. Within a diagrammatic $T$ matrix approach, we~report how thermodynamic quantities such as the critical temperature, chemical potential, {and~momentum distributions} undergo the crossover from the BCS to BEC regime by tuning the intraband coupling in the shallow band. We also generalize the definition of Tan's contact to a two band system and report the two contacts for different pair-exchange couplings. The present results are compared with those obtained by the simpler Nozi\`eres--Schmitt--Rink approximation. The experimental parameter ranges needed to generate superfluidity in optical and drag experiments in GaAs double quantum wells are determined, using a formalism that includes self-consistent screening of the Coulomb pairing interaction in the presence of the superfluid. The very different electron and hole masses in GaAs make this a particularly interesting system for superfluidity, with exotic superfluid phases predicted in the BCS-BEC crossover regime. We find that the density and temperature ranges for superfluidity cover the range for which optical experiments have observed indications of superfluidity, but that existing drag experiments lie outside the superfluid range. However we also show that for samples with low mobility with no macroscopically connected superfluidity, if the superfluidity survived in randomly distributed localized pockets, standard quantum capacitance measurements could detect these pockets., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The hunt for high temperature superfluidity has received new impetus from the discovery of atomically thin stable materials. Electron-hole superfluidity in coupled MoSe2-WSe2 monolayers is investigated using a mean-field multiband model that includes the band splitting caused by the strong spin-orbit coupling. The splitting leads to a large energy misalignment of the electron and hole bands which can be markedly changed by interchanging the doping of the monolayers. The choice of doping determines if the superfluidity is tuneable from one- to two-components. The electron-hole pairing is strong, with high transition temperatures in excess of 100 K.

We investigate Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)- Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in a two-band superfluid Fermi gas with an energy shift between the bands. When the intraband coupling in the cold (first) band is fixed as weak, we find that in the case of vanishing interband interaction and in the strong-coupling limit of the hot (second) band the system undergoes a transition to a single-component configuration with the full suppression of the first energy gap and with the full redistribution of particles between bands. For non-vanishing interband interaction we reveal the non-monotonic dependence of the energy gap in the first band vs intraband coupling in the second band with the presence of a hump. In the case of weak interband coupling the system shows a significant amplification of the intrapair correlation length of the condensate in the first band in the strong-coupling regime of the second band, which clearly indicates the coexistence of giant Cooper pairs and a bosonic condensate even for nonzero temperatures. This can lead to a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the second energy gap with a peak. We study the superfluid critical temperature in a two-band attractive Fermi system with strong pairing fluctuations associated with both interband and intraband couplings. We focus specifically on a configuration where the intraband coupling is varied from weak to strong in a shallow band coupled to a weakly-interacting deeper band. The whole crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) condensation of largely overlapping Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of tightly bound molecules is covered by our analysis, which is based on the extension of the Nozi\`{e}res-Schmitt-Rink (NSR) approach to a two-band system. In comparison with the single-band case, we find a strong enhancement of the critical temperature, a significant reduction of the preformed pair region where pseudogap effects are expected, and the entanglement of two kinds of composite bosons in the strong-coupling BEC regime., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, published version in PRB

Superfluidity has recently been reported in double electron-hole bilayer graphene. The multiband nature of the bilayers is important because of the very small band gaps between conduction and valence bands. The long range nature of the superfluid pairing interaction means that screening must be fully taken into account. We have carried out a systematic mean-field investigation that includes (i) contributions to screening from both intraband and interband excitations, (ii) the low-energy band structure of bilayer graphene with its small band gap and flattened Mexican hat-like low-energy bands, (iii) the large density of states at the bottom of the bands, (iv) electron-hole pairing in the multibands, and (v) electron-hole pair transfers between the conduction and valence band condensates. We find that the superfluidity strongly modifies the intraband contributions to the screening, but that the interband contributions are unaffected. Unexpectedly, the net effect of the screening is to suppress Josephson-like pair transfers and to confine the superfluid pairing entirely to the conduction band condensate even for very small band gaps, making the system behave similarly to a one-band superfluid., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We report quantum Monte Carlo evidence of the existence of large gap superfluidity in electron-hole double layers over wide density ranges. The superfluid parameters evolve from normal state to BEC with decreasing density, with the BCS state restricted to a tiny range of densities due to the strong screening of Coulomb interactions, which causes the gap to rapidly become large near the onset of superfluidity. The superfluid properties exhibit similarities to ultracold fermions and iron-based superconductors, suggesting an underlying universal behavior of BCS-BEC crossovers in pairing systems., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 4 pages Supplementary. Superconducting and normal state properties of sputtered Niobium nanofilms have been systematically investigated, as a function of film thickness in a d=9-90 nm range, on different substrates. The width of the superconducting-to-normal transition for all films remained in few tens of mK, thus remarkably narrow, confirming their high quality. We found that the superconducting critical current density exhibits a pronounced maximum, three times larger than its bulk value, for film thickness around 25 nm, marking the 3D-to-2D crossover. The extracted magnetic penetration depth shows a sizeable enhancement for the thinnest films, aside the usual demagnetization effects. Additional amplification effects of the superconducting properties have been obtained in the case of sapphire substrates or squeezing the lateral size of the nanofilms. For thickness close to 20 nm we also measured a doubled perpendicular critical magnetic field compared to its saturation value for d>33 nm, indicating shortening of the correlation length and the formation of small Cooper pairs in the condensate. Our data analysis evidences an exciting interplay between quantum-size and proximity effects together with strong-coupling effects and importance of disorder in the thinnest films, locating the ones with optimally enhanced critical properties close to the BCS-BEC crossover regime.

Weyl fermions are shown to exist inside a parabolic band, where the kinetic energy of carriers is given by the non-relativistic Schroedinger equation. There are Fermi arcs as a direct consequence of the folding of a ring shaped Fermi surface inside the first Brillouin zone. Our results stem from the decomposition of the kinetic energy into the sum of the square of the Weyl state, the coupling to the local magnetic field and the Rashba interaction. The Weyl fermions break the time and reflection symmetries present in the kinetic energy, thus allowing for the onset of a weak three-dimensional magnetic field around the layer. This field brings topological stability to the current carrying states through a Chern number. In the special limit that the Weyl state becomes gapless this magnetic interaction is shown to be purely attractive, thus suggesting the onset of a superconducting condensate of zero helicity states.

Recent experiments have reported the emergence of high temperature superconductivity with critical temperature $T_c$ between 43K and 123K in a potassium doped aromatic hydrocarbon para-Terphenyl or p-Terphenyl. This achievement provides the record for the highest Tc in an organic superconductor overcoming the previous record of Tc=38 K in Cs3C60 fulleride. Here we propose that the driving mechanism is the quantum resonance between superconducting gaps near a Lifshitz transition which belongs to the class of Fano resonances called shape resonances. For the case of p-Terphenyl our numerical solutions of the multi gap equation shows that high Tc is driven by tuning the chemical potential by K doping and it appears only in a narrow energy range near a Lifshitz transition. At the maximum critical temperature, Tc=123K, the condensate in the appearing new small Fermi surface pocket is in the BCS-BEC crossover while the Tc drops below 0.3 K where it is in the BEC regime. Finally we predict the experimental results which can support or falsify our proposed mechanism: a) the variation of the isotope coefficient as a function of the critical temperature and b) the variation of the gaps and their ratios 2Delta/Tc as a function of Tc., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

While it is known that the amplification of the superconducting critical temperature Tc is possible in a system of multiple electronic components in comparison with a single component system, many different road maps for room temperature superconductivity have been proposed for a variety of multicomponent scenarios. Here we focus on the scenario where the first electronic component is assumed to have a vanishing Fermi velocity corresponding to a case of the intermediate polaronic regime, and the second electronic component is in the weak coupling regime with standard high Fermi velocity using a mean field theory for multiband superconductivity. This roadmap is motivated by compelling experimental evidence for one component in the proximity of a Lifshitz transition in cuprates, diborides and iron based superconductors. By keeping a constant and small exchange interaction between the two electron fluids, we search for the optimum coupling strength in the electronic polaronic component which gives the largest amplification of the superconducting critical temperature in comparison with the case of a single electronic component., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Ultrathin superconductors of different materials are becoming a powerful platform to find mechanisms for enhancement of superconductivity, exploiting shape resonances in different superconducting properties. Here we evaluate the superconducting gap and its spatial profile, the multiple gap components, and the chemical potential, of generic superconducting nanofilms, considering the pairing attraction and its energy scale as tunable parameters, from weak to strong coupling, at fixed electron density. Superconducting properties are evaluated at mean field level as a function of the thickness of the nanofilm, in order to characterize the shape resonances in the superconducting gap. We find that the most pronounced shape resonances are generated for weakly coupled superconductors, while approaching the strong coupling regime the shape resonances are rounded by a mixing of the subbands due to the large energy gaps extending over large energy scales. Finally, we find that the spatial profile, transverse to the nanofilm, of the superconducting gap acquires a flat behavior in the shape resonance region, indicating that a robust and uniform multigap superconducting state can arise at resonance., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. We study the crossover in a zero temperature superconducting nanofilm from a single to a double superconducting slab induced by a tunable insulating potential barrier in the middle. The single phase superconducting ground state of this heterostructure is shown to be intrinsically multigapped and to have a new type of resonance caused by the strength of the barrier, thus distinct from the Thompson-Blatt shape resonance which is caused by tuning the thickness of the film. Single particle electronic states are strongly or weakly affected according to their parity (even or odd) with respect to the insulating barrier. The lift of the parity degeneracy at finite barrier strength reconfigures the pairing interaction and leads to a multigapped superconducting state with interaction driven resonances., Comment: 10 pages 12 figures

Elementary Cycles are intrinsic periodic phenomena, classical in the essence, whose classical relativistic dynamics reproduce the complete coherence (perfect recurrences) typically associated to the pure quantum behaviours of elementary particles. They can be regarded as effective representations of 't Hooft Cellular Automata. By means of Elementary Cycles physics we obtain a consistent, intuitive, novel derivation of the peculiar quantum dynamics of electrons in Carbon Nanotubes, as well as of Superconductivity fundamental phenomenology. In particular we derive, from classical arguments, the essential electronic properties of graphene systems, such as energy bands and density of states. Similarly, in the second part of the paper, we derive the Superconductivity fundamental phenomenology in terms of simple geometrical considerations, directly from the Elementary Cycles dynamics rather than from empirical aspects and effective quantities connected to the microscopical characteristics of materials as in the standard approaches to Superconductivity. With this approach simple geometrical considerations about the competition between the quantum recurrence and the thermal noise allow for a novel interpretation of the occurrence of high temperature superconductivity and the related gauge symmetry breaking mechanism., Comment: Slightly revised version of the published paper. The conduction electrons in graphene promise new opportunities to access the region of strong many-body electron-electron correlations. Extremely high quality, atomically flat two-dimensional electron sheets and quasi-one-dimensional electron nanoribbons with tuneable band gaps that can be switched on by gates, should exhibit new many-body phenomena that have long been predicted for the regions of phase space where the average Coulomb repulsions between electrons dominate over their Fermi energies. In electron nanoribbons a few nanometres wide etched in monolayers of graphene, the quantum size effects and the van Hove singularities in their density of states further act to enhance electron correlations. Ultranarrow superconductors are in the strong quantum confinement regime with formation of multiple coherent condensates associated with the many subbands of the electronic structure. Here we analyze the multiband BCS-BEC crossover induced by the chemical potential tuned close to a subband bottom, in correspondence of a superconducting shape resonance. The evolution of the condensate fraction and of the pair correlation length in the ground state as functions of the chemical potential demonstrates the tunability of the BCS-BEC crossover for the condensate component of the selected subband. The extension of the crossover regime increases when the pairing strength and/or the characteristic energy of the interaction get larger. Our results indicate the coexistence of large and small Cooper pairs in the crossover regime, leading to the optimal parameter configuration for high transition temperature superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Experiments have confirmed that double monolayer graphene cannot generate finite temperature electron-hole superfluidity. This has been shown to be due to very strong screening of the electron-hole pairing attraction. The linear dispersing energy bands in monolayer graphene prevent attempts to reduce the strength of the screening. We propose a new hybrid device in which the two sheets of monolayer graphene are placed in a modulated periodic perpendicular magnetic field. Such a magnetic field preserves the isotropic Dirac cones of the original monolayers but it reduces the slope of the cones so that the monolayer Fermi velocity $v_F$ is smaller. We show that with current experimental techniques, this reduction in $v_F$ can sufficiently weaken the screening to permit electron-hole superfluidity at measurable temperatures., Comment: Revised version. Multicomponent superconductivity is a novel quantum phenomenon in many different superconducting materials, such as multiband ones in which different superconducting gaps open in different Fermi surfaces, films engineered at the atomic scale to enter the quantum confined regime, multilayers, two-dimensional electron gases at the oxide interfaces, and complex materials in which different electronic orbitals or different carriers participate in the formation of the superconducting condensate. In all these systems the increased number of degrees of freedom of the multicomponent superconducting wave-function allows for emergent quantum effects that are otherwise unattainable in single-component superconductors. Superconductivity in iron-based, magnesium diborides, and other novel superconducting materials has a strong multi-band and multi-gap character. Recent experiments support the possibillity for a BCS-BEC crossover induced by strong-coupling and proximity of the chemical potential to the band edge of one of the bands. Here we study the simplest theoretical model which accounts for the BCS-BEC crossover in a two-band superconductor, considering tunable interactions and tunable energy separations between the bands. Mean-field results for condensate fraction, correlation length, and superconducting gap are reported in typical crossover diagrams to locate the boundaries of the BCS, crossover, and BEC regimes. When the superconducting gap is of the order of the local chemical potential, superconductivity is in the crossover regime of the BCS-BEC crossover and the Fermi surface of the small band is smeared by the gap opening. In this situation, small and large Cooper pairs coexist in the total condensate, which is the optimal condition for high-Tc superconductivity. The ratio between the gap and the Fermi energy in a given band results to be the best detection parameter for experiments to locate the system in the BCS-BEC crossover. Using available experimental data, our analysis shows that iron-based superconductors have the partial condensate of the small Fermi surface in the crossover regime of the BCS-BEC crossover, supporting the recent ARPES findings., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to SUST (Multicomponent Superconductivity)
