Abstract

A laser ion source is under development at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, in order to address deficiencies in the ion guide technique. The key elements of interest are those of a refractory nature, whose isotopes and isomers are widely studied using both laser spectroscopic and high precision mass measurement techniques. Yttrium has been the first element of choice for the new laser ion source. In this work we present a new coupled dye-Ti:Sapphire laser scheme and give a detailed discussion of the results obtained from laser ionization of yttrium atoms produced in an ion guide via joule heating of a filament. The importance of not only gas purity, but indeed the baseline vacuum pressure in the environment outside the ion guide is discussed in light of the fast gas phase chemistry seen in the yttrium system. Abstract

In an experiment performed at the LISE3 facility of GANIL, we studied the decay of 22Al produced by the fragmentation of a 36Ar primary beam. A beta-decay half-life of 91.1 +- 0.5 ms was measured. The beta-delayed one- and two-proton emission as well as beta-alpha and beta-delayed gamma decays were measured and allowed us to establish a partial decay scheme for this nucleus. New levels were determined in the daughter nucleus 22Mg. The comparison with model calculations strongly favours a spin-parity of 4+ for the ground state of 22Al.

Abstract

The $\beta$-decay properties of the neutron-deficient nuclei $^{25}$Si and $^{26}$P have been investigated at the GANIL/LISE3 facility by means of charged-particle and $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. The decay schemes obtained and the Gamow-Teller strength distributions are compared to shell-model calculations based on the USD interaction. B(GT) values derived from the absolute measurement of the $\beta$-decay branching ratios give rise to a quenching factor of the Gamow-Teller strength of 0.6. A precise half-life of 43.7 (6) ms was determined for $^{26}$P, the $\beta$- (2)p decay mode of which is described.

4. Reinvestigation of the Direct Two-proton Decay of the Long-lived Isomer 94Agm [0.4 s, 6.7 MeV, (21+)]

Abstract

An attempt to confirm the reported direct one-proton and two-proton decays of the (21+) isomer at 6.7(5) MeV in 94Ag has been made. The 0.39(4) s half-life of the isomer permitted use of a helium-jet system to transport reaction products from the 40Ca + natNi reaction at 197 MeV to a low-background area; 24 gas Delta E-(Si) E detector telescopes were used to identify emitted protons down to 0.4 MeV. No evidence was obtained for two-proton radioactivity with a summed energy of 1.9(1) MeV and a branching ratio of 0.5(3)percent. Two groups of one-proton radioactivity from this isomer had also been reported; our data confirm the lower energy group at 0.79(3) MeV with its branching ratio of 1.9(5)percent.

Abstract

The β decays of 12N and 12B have been studied at KVI and JYFL to resolve the composition of the broad and interfering 0+ and 2+ strengths in the triple-α continuum. For the first time a complete treatment of 3α decay is presented including all major breakup channels. A multilevel, many-channel R-matrix formalism has been developed for the complete description of the breakup in combination with the recently published separate analysis of angular correlations. We find that, in addition to the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV, more than one 0+ and 2+ state is needed to reproduce the spectra. Broad 0+_3 and 2+_2 states are found between 10.5 and 12 MeV in this work. Abstract

Absolute branching ratios to unbound states in C-12 populated in the beta decays of N-12 and B-12 are reported. Clean sources of N-12 and B-12 were obtained using the isotope separation on-line (ISOL) method. The relative branching ratios to the different populated states were extracted using single-alpha as well as complete kinematics triple-alpha spectra. These two largely independent methods give consistent results. Absolute normalization is achieved via the precisely known absolute branching ratio to the bound 4.44 MeV state in C-12. The extracted branching ratios to the unbound states are a factor of three more precise than previous measurements. Branching ratios in the decay of Na-20 are also extracted and used to check the results.

Abstract

Two complementary experimental techniques have been used to extract precise branching ratios to unbound states in C-12 from N-12 and B-12 beta-decays. In the first the three alpha-particles emitted after decay are measured in coincidence in separate detectors, while in the second method N-12 and B-12 are implanted in a detector and the summed energy of the three a-particles is measured directly. For the narrow states at 7.654 MeV (0(+)) and 12.71 MeV (1(+)) the resulting branching ratios are both smaller than previous measurements by a factor of similar or equal to 2. The experimental results are compared to no-core shell model calculations with realistic interactions from chiral perturbation theory, and inclusion of three-nucleon forces is found to give improved agreement. Abstract

The extraction efficiency of positive (219)Rn ions across the superfluid-vapor helium interface above similar to 1.3 K indicates that extraction results from thermal activation across a barrier of about 20 K. Below similar to 1.3 K, the extraction efficiency is constant at about 0.7%. The evaporation of the superfluid surface by second sound pulses has a negative impact on the ion extraction, but not on the ions themselves. It takes 3.2( 6) s at 1.60 K and 15( 6) s at 1.15 K for the extraction process to recover from a disturbed state of yet unknown nature.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of states in C-12 have been a subject of interest for both theory and experiment since the early days of nuclear physics. Many open questions remain, especially concerning the existence and properties of 0(+) and 2(+) states in the triple alpha continuum. A series of experiments have been performed using beta-decay of N-12 and B-12 to probe these states. The latest experiment was performed at KVI using an implantation method, measuring the sum energy of the three alpha-particles directly. Preliminary results from this experiment will be presented.

Abstract

The ground-state branch in the beta decay of Cu-58 has been remeasured by using gamma-ray detection combined with ion-guide-based on-line mass separation. The measured value 80.8(7)% is three times more precise and in agreement with the earlier reported value. Abstract

In an experiment performed at the GANIL LISE3 facility, radioactive S-27 isotopes have been produced by projectile fragmentation of a 95 AMeV Ar-36 primary beam. After selection by means of the LISE3 separator, the isotope of interest was implanted in a silicon-detector telescope where its half-life (T-1/2 = 15.5(15) ms) and its main decay branches were measured.

Abstract

An improved high-resolution study of the beta decay of Ti-41, produced in the Ca-40(He-3,2n) reaction at 40 MeV, has been performed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. The beta-delayed radiation was detected by a low-energy charged-particle detector and a large Ge detector for gamma rays. The experimental beta-decay strength and its distribution, extracted from delayed-proton data, are compared with results of shell-model calculations in the sdfp space. Abstract

The beta-delayed gamma decay of Nb-108 has been studied using the on-line mass-separator technique. The measured beta-decay half-life 0.20+/-0.03 s agrees with the previous measurement based on beta-delayed neutron detection. The lifetime of the first 2(+) stale in Mo-108 was measured to be 0.5+/-0.3 ns, which is consistent with a deformation beta approximate to 0.4. Spin and parity of 2(+) are suggested for the ground state of Nb-108.
