This book, for the first time, collects important current topics in the area of sign language translation in a single volume. The topic is introduced more generally to benefit newcomers to the field before diving into the current state-of-the-art methods of Sign Language Machine Translation (SLMT), together with an in-depth description of issues specific to this topic, including: an introduction to and historical overview of SLMT; ethical issues related to the engagement of and with deaf users; the importance of data; the sign languages of Europe; sign language recognition and synthesis, including via avatars; data-driven and linguistically-informed models of SLMT; gloss translation; fingerspelling; SLMT communication; and SLMT in practice. This book contributes to the discourse on disability in Africa as an issue of systemic exclusion characterized by the discrimination and often complete segregation of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in various African countries. Despite the inclusive promise of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) as well as the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples'Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa, the situation has not actually improved for PWDs in Africa. Given the powerful evidence of the devaluation of PWDs in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is high time to reflect on the experiences of persons with disabilities in education, along with other forms of discrimination they encounter. The book's respective chapters assess how well the existing legal frameworks, policies and practices in most African countries have met the needs for inclusion of children and adults with disabilities. The social and economic rights of persons with disabilities are protected in the constitutions of most countries and enshrined in the normative frameworks that most African leaders have adopted and ratified. These commitments need to be borne in mind when thinking about the present and the future. Inclusive development is an investment and must be viewed as part of a package of reforms that are connected to substantive social protection and improvements in realizing other socio-economic goods. Indeed, a range of alliances are needed to advance the goals of ‘leaving no one behind', ensuring ‘education for all', and delivering on the African Union's call for the development of policies, programmes and requisite budgets for the realization of inclusive education for persons with disabilities.

Menschen mit Legasthenie und Dyskalkulie sind an deutschen Hochschulen stark unterrepräsentiert und die Forschung zu diesem Thema ist rar. Eine gleichberechtigte und diskriminierungsfreie Teilhabe von Studierenden mit studienerschwerenden Beeinträchtigungen gemäß der UN-Behindertenrechtskonventionen kann durch die Hochschulen allerdings nur sichergestellt werden, wenn wissenschaftlich fundierte Ergebnisse in den Prozess bis hin zur 2009 von der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz geforderten „Hochschule für alle“ einfließen. In diesem Buch wird untersucht, wie sich der Tertiärbereich Studium in der Bildungskarriere von Personen mit den Teilleistungsstörungen Legasthenie oder Dyskalkulie gestaltet und gibt damit erstmals einen Überblick über den Status Quo dieser Studierendengruppe. Die inhaltlich-strukturierende qualitative Inhaltsanalyse zeigt, dass Studierende mit Legasthenie und Dyskalkulie bereits hilfreiche individuelle Ressourcen beispielsweise in Form von Lern- und Copingstrategien nutzen und auch den an Hochschulen gesetzlich-verankerten Nachteilsausgleich teils als unterstützend empfinden. Dennoch sind die befragten Studierenden - nicht zuletzt durch die Covid-19-Pandemie – auf diversen Ebenen mit verschiedensten Herausforderungen konfrontiert, die zu psychischer Belastung und Studienerschwernissen führen können.

This book systematizes the latest findings on the clinical, psychological, and pedagogical features of today's children with special educational needs (SEN) and expands the scientific understanding that characterizes such children. The book develops a system of education and assistance for children with SEN, including children with locomotor disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and hearing and visual impairments. The book is intended for heads of educational authorities, parents, specialists working with children with special educational needs, psychologists, teachers, methodologists, specialists in the field of inclusive education, and students and teachers in special education of pedagogical and psychological departments of higher education institutions.

Digitalisierung betrifft alle Lebensbereiche. Aber nicht alle Personen können diesem Prozess adäquat begegnen und sie werden zunehmend aus der Gesellschaft ausgeschlossen. Ihnen droht also (digitale) Exklusion. Besonders im Jahr 2020 erlangte die Digitalisierung durch die Coronavirus-Pandemie einen Aufwind, indem eine Vielzahl analoger Praktiken in den digitalen Raum verlagert wurden. Dadurch entstanden Chancen auf Teilhabe, jedoch stieg auch die Gefahr der Exklusion - besonders für Personen, die prädisponiert für Marginalisierung sind, wie die in diesem Buch zugrundeliegende Zielgruppe'Menschen mit geistigen Behinderungen'(MmgB). Aufgrund dessen ist es erforderlich, die gesellschaftliche Teilhabe zu untersuchen. Ann Christin Schulz stützt sich dabei auf den sozialen Transformationsprozess der Digitalisierung. Im Vordergrund steht die subjektorientierte Betrachtungsebene mit einem praxistheoretischen Ansatz, indem in Form von Beobachtungen und eingebetteter Forschung ein Jahr in einer Einrichtung einer Behindertenhilfe geforscht wurde. Die Autorin zeigt u.a., welche Chancen und Risiken Digitalisierung für die Teilhabe von MmgB bietet, welche sozialen Praktiken sich mit digitalen Technologien entfalten und welcher Einfluss der soziale Kontext von MmgB auf ihre Teilhabe hat.

Digitale Bildungsangebote können für Menschen mit Behinderungen eine entscheidende Rolle spielen, um grundlegende berufliche Kompetenzen zu erwerben. Das Modellprojekt'diBa'hat sich intensiv mit dieser Thematik befasst. Es konzentrierte sich auf die Entwicklung und Implementierung digitaler Bildungsangebote, die speziell auf die Bedürfnisse von Menschen mit Behinderungen zugeschnitten sind.

Digital education offers support the equal participation of people with disabilities in lifelong learning. They thus provide access for independent living and participation in all areas of life and are highlighted as a central factor of successful inclusion. In order to give people with impairment the opportunity to participate in digital education, the educational and qualification needs of people with impairment in 10 member institutions of the Cooperative of Workshops for Disabled People in Northern Germany e.G. were recorded in 2016 - 2018. In this volume, existing analyses on the educational needs of people with impairments and existing educational offers are evaluated and more than 500 people with impairments are interviewed. On the basis of this study, needs-oriented digital educational offers are created in a targeted manner.

This book shows how behavior analysis can be applied to teaching reading and writing to primary school students and to special populations, such as children with intellectual and hearing disabilities and illiterate adults. Originally published in Portuguese, this contributed volume is now translated into English and presents for the first time to international researchers and students a comprehensive overview of a research program developed for more than three decades in Brazil which gave birth to a unique teaching program based on the concept of stimulus equivalence: the Learning to Read and Write in Small Steps. The book is divided into four parts. The first part presents the theoretical framework and the historical context in which the teaching program was developed by the group led by Drs. Julio Cesar de Rose and Deisy das Graças de Souza, currently organized in the National Institute of Science and Technology on Behavior, Cognition, and Learning (INCT/ECCE). The second part describes the modules that make up the Learning to Read and Write in Small Steps teaching program. The third part presents results of empirical research conducted with children with intellectual and hearing disabilities and illiterate adults. Finally, the fourth part presents contributions from other areas of knowledge – such as speech therapy, linguistics, and education – to the understanding of reading and writing and possible dialogues between them and behavior analysis. Contributions of Behavior Analysis to Reading and Writing Comprehension will be of interest to researchers and students in the fields of psychology and education interested in the application of behavior analysis to teaching and learning processes. It will also be a valuable resource for professionals directly working in educational institutions, such as elementary school teachers and psycho-pedagogues. The translation of the original manuscript in Portuguese was done with the help of artificial intelligence. The present version has been revised technically and linguistically by the authors in collaboration with a professional translator.

This textbook focuses upon understanding the importance of building an identity of capability as a means of growth, giving, and living a rich and satisfying personal and interpersonal life for people with complex learning disorders. Through this book, teachers will gain a greater understanding of the emotional world of these students and will be able to ‘tune in'and build trust. The volume presents tools for facilitating ‘empowered teaching'which supports teachers to create a learning climate that will enable students with complex learning disorders to build trust, gain understanding, and promote development. Establishing an identity of capability will enable students in general, and adults with complex learning disabilities in particular, to identify their true strongpoints, to conceptualize them, and to place them at the forefront of their self-image. The text provides many lively examples for empowering teaching and for implementing the principles of intervention and teaching to students with complex learning disorders as presented in the book. Beginnend in den frühen 2000er Jahren ist Inklusion in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer stärker in den Fokus (praktischer, theoretischer wie empirischer) Bildungsbemühungen gerückt. Insbesondere die Sonderpädagogik, aber nicht nur sie, ist mit einer nie dagewesenen Entwicklung konfrontiert. Inklusion zweifelt die Existenzberechtigung der Sonderpädagogik an und fordert auch die Allgemeine Pädagogik mit ihren Ausschlussmechanismen heraus. Viele Debatten und unzählige Veröffentlichungen in der Inklusionspädagogik berühren direkt praktische und politische Umsetzungsfragen – von Fragen der Didaktik und Methodik inklusiven Unterrichts, bis hin zur Frage, wie Lehrpersonen entsprechende inklusive Einstellungen entwickeln können. Relativ spärlich aber gestaltet sich der inklusive Grundlagendiskurs. Insbesondere fehlen Ansätze zur ethischen Grundlegung inklusiver Bildung weitgehend. Dabei wäre das genau wichtig, denn Umsetzungsfragen berühren in pädagogischen Kontexten immer auch normative Zielperspektiven. Genau an diesem Punkt setzt das Buch an. Es fragt u.a. danach, welche deskriptive Aussagekraft dem Begriff der Inklusion zukommt, welche ethisch-normative Basis Inklusion hat und was davon in der pädagogischen Anwendung zentral ist. Das Buch thematisiert weiter auch, welchen Stellenwert Behinderung in dieser ganzen Debatte hat. Und nicht zuletzt befragt es eine Reihe von Mythen in der Inklusionsliteratur nach ihrer Plausibilität, u.a. dass Inklusion mit der Akzeptanz von Heterogenität gleichgesetzt werden kann oder dass eine radikale Dekategorisierung zu mehr Inklusion führen führt.

Die Disability Studies sind ein international etabliertes, anspruchsvolles und innovatives Forschungsfeld, in dem es darum geht, das Phänomen „(Nicht-)Behinderung“ als historische, soziale, politische und kulturelle Konstruktion zu fassen, es somit aus der medizinisch-pädagogischen Umklammerung zu lösen und unter einer genuin sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive zu untersuchen. Ähnlich den Gender Studies oder Queer Studies handelt es sich bei den Disability Studies um einen Ansatz, der eine emanzipatorische Zielrichtung verfolgt. Das Handbuch führt in den internationalen Diskurs ein und bietet einen fundierten Überblick über die Entwicklung, Grundlagen und Debatten der deutschsprachigen Disability Studies. Die Aufsätze behandeln zentrale theoretische, methodische und empirische Fragen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen sowie intersektionale und querliegende Perspektiven der Studien zu „dis/ability“. This book presents for the first time the results of scientific research in the field of special education and special psychology carried out by top experts of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. The range of problems discussed in the book reflects the most relevant areas of development of the education system and psychological and pedagogical assistance to children with special educational needs (SEN). Both scientific and methodological developments provide practitioners with modern means of diagnostic, correctional, developmental, and preventive work. Furthermore, responding to the current challenges, the authors present the results of research on the impact of virtual reality on the health of adolescents, the results of an experiment on the study and formation of financial literacy of high-school kids with developmental disorders, highlight approaches to the prevention of auto aggressive behavior in the adolescent environment, and offer the proven technologies for psychological and pedagogical habilitation and rehabilitation of children with SEN of various nosologic groups and children with somatic pathology studying at a hospital school. The theoretical block of the book includes an analysis of the fundamental problems of today's pedagogical and social reality: substantiation of conceptual approaches to the construction of an inclusive space, consideration of the basic psychophysiological mechanisms of speech, the formation of a convergent network educational environment and some other problems that can directly or indirectly affect the quality of education, upbringing, and social adaptation of children with SEN. The book is intended for psychologists, special-need experts, teachers, methodologists, employees of educational organizations working with children with disabilities, specialists in the field of inclusive education, students and teachers of special education, and pedagogical and psychological departments of higher education institutions.

Im Bereich wohnbezogener Hilfen für Menschen mit sogenannter geistiger Behinderung treten systemisch und systematisch,Exklusionssphären‘ in Form von hochspezialisierten Angeboten sowie,Resteinrichtungen‘ auf. Hiervon sind aktuell Menschen mit komplexen Unterstützungsbedarfen besonders betroffen. Der Autor untersucht am Beispiel von Menschen mit sogenannter geistiger Behinderung und herausforderndem Verhalten, schwerer bzw. mehrfacher Beeinträchtigung sowie fortgeschrittenem bzw. hohem Lebensalter explorativ das Entstehen von,Exklusionssphären‘ sowie deren Auswirkungen auf die individuelle Lebensqualität und die persönlichen Sozialräume betroffener Personen.

Digitale Bildungsangebote unterstützen die gleichberechtigte Teilhabe von Menschen mit Beeinträchtigung am lebenslangen Lernen. Sie bieten damit einen Zugang für eine unabhängige Lebensführung und Teilhabe in allen Lebensbereichen und werden als zentraler Faktor gelingender Inklusion hervorgehoben. Um Menschen mit Beeinträchtigung die Möglichkeit zu geben, an digitaler Bildung teilzuhaben, wurde 2016 – 2018 der Bildungs- und Qualifizierungsbedarf von Menschen mit Beeinträchtigung in 10 Mitgliedseinrichtungen der Genossenschaft der Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen in Norddeutschland e.G. erfasst. In diesem Band werden vorhandene Analysen zum Bildungsbedarf von Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen und bestehende Bildungsangebote ausgewertet und über 500 Menschen mit Beeinträchtigung befragt. Auf der Grundlage dieser Studie werden zielgenau bedarfsorientierte digitale Bildungsangebote erstellt.

Die Erkenntnis, dass gehörlose Frauen von verschiedenen Formen von Gewalt und ihren Folgen genauso oder sogar weit häufiger betroffen sein können als andere Frauen, ist in der Öffentlichkeit kaum bekannt. Ein stark erhöhtes Risiko für Gewalterfahrungen ergibt sich bei gehörlosen Frauen vor allem aufgrund einer ausgeprägten gesellschaftlichen Isolation. Ein weiterer wesentlicher Risikofaktor für die im Vergleich zu Frauen mit und ohne Behinderungen überdurchschnittlich hohe Gewaltbetroffenheit gehörloser Frauen ist ihre häufig alternativlose Einbindung in die Gehörlosengemeinschaft. Dies verweist darauf, dass unsere Gesellschaft bislang daran gescheitert ist, gehörlose Menschen ausreichend zu integrieren, und diese so marginalisiert hat, dass sie von der Mehrheitsgesellschaft weitgehend unbemerkt zu Tätern und Opfern werden. Nicht zuletzt hat Gewalt gegen gehörlose Frauen komplexe und weitreichende gesundheitliche Folgen. Das Gesundheitssystem nimmt deshalb eine Schlüsselrolle für die Prävention, Weitervermittlung und Intervention bei Gewalt gegen gehörlose Frauen und ihre Kinder ein.
