El mundo se ha enfrentado recientemente a un nuevo virus llamado Covid-19. Este virus de transmisión aérea surgió rápidamente y se extendió por todo el mundo, provocando un estado de crisis en todas las naciones y obligando a los gobiernos a imponer las restricciones necesarias para salvaguardar la salud pública. Dichas restricciones estipulaban principalmente la necesidad de distanciamiento físico (a menudo denominado distanciamiento social en la normativa Covid), prohibiendo a individuos y grupos reunirse bajo cualquier circunstancia. Naturalmente, y como han demostrado hasta la fecha numerosas publicaciones e informes, esta medida repercutió drásticamente en la vida social, política, religiosa y económica, dejando a las sociedades en una situación precaria ante sus posibles efectos. Un ámbito que experimentó enormes cambios fue el de la atención a los moribundos y sus familiares. La muerte resurgió en las sociedades de forma más pública, mientras la cobertura de los medios de comunicación de masas forzaba la acción política sobre el tema. Mientras la muerte se re-institucionalizaba durante la pandemia, el cuidado de los difuntos, las tradiciones, las costumbres y los servicios funerarios sufrían transformaciones, y el uso de la tecnología se convirtió en una necesidad para que éstas se produjeran.

3. Religious/Spiritual Referrals in Hospice and Palliative Care

This study examines the religious/spiritual referral patterns in hospice and palliative care. Religion and death are two highly intersected topics and albeit often discussed together in hospice and palliative care, little is known about how professionals respond to religious/spiritual needs of patients/families/friends and in relation to the chaplaincy team. By means of an in-depth interviewing method, this paper reports on data from 15 hospice and palliative care professionals. Participants were recruited from across five hospice and palliative care organisations, and the data was managed and analysed with the use of NVivo. Largely, participants were keen to refer patients/families/friends to the chaplaincy team, unless the former’s faith or lack thereof did not match the chaplains, in which case referrals to a religious leader in the community were favoured. This shed light to the tendencies to homogenise religious/spiritual beliefs. The paper concludes with some implications for practice and research.

5. A novel horizontal to vertical spectral ratio approach in a wired structural health monitoring system

This work studies the effect ambient seismic noise can have on building constructions, in comparison with the traditional study of strong seismic motion in buildings, for the purpose of structural health monitoring. Traditionally, engineers have observed the effect of earthquakes on buildings by usage of seismometers at various levels. A new approach is proposed in which acceleration recordings of ambient seismic noise are used and horizontal to vertical spectra ratio (HVSR) process is applied, in order to determine the resonance frequency of movement due to excitation of the building from a strong seismic event. The HVSR technique is widely used by geophysicists to study the resonance frequency of sediments over bedrock, while its usage inside buildings is limited. This study applies the recordings inside two university buildings attached to each other, but with different construction materials and different years of construction. Also there is HVSR application in another much older building, with visible cracks in its structure. Sensors have been installed on every floor of the two university buildings, and recordings have been acquired both of ambient seismic noise and earthquakes. Resonance frequencies for every floor of every building are calculated, from both noise and earthquake records, using the HVSR technique for the ambient noise data and the receiver function (RF) for the earthquake data. Differential acceleration drift for every building is also calculated, and there is correlation with the vulnerability of the buildings. Results indicate that HVSR process on acceleration data proves to be an easy, fast, economical method for estimation of fundamental frequency of structures as well as an assessment method for building vulnerability estimation. Comparison between HVSR and RF technique shows an agreement at the change of resonance frequency as we move to higher floors.

8. Religious competence in social work practice: The UK picture

Social work principles include cultural competence and cultural awareness as major matters for effective social work practice. Religion is one of the strands for non-discriminatory practice. However religious competence has not been referred as such. This essay seeks to comment on an observed need in the UK for further development and implementations of social work principles and practice. The religious diversity in the UK shows demand for multi-faith and multi-religious education, knowledge and awareness, which will promote effective social work practice.

9. Integrating religion and belief in social work practice: an exploratory study

ABSTRACTThis exploratory study examines how social work practitioners in England integrate service users’ religion, belief and spiritual identities. The study involved 34 semi-structured interviews with Qualified Social Workers and took a qualitative investigational perspective. By means of thematic analysis, the study suggests that practitioners employ either avoidantor utilitarianapproaches, which may indeed be a coping strategy before the vast religious plurality in practice. The study also highlights when professionals perceive religion, belief and spirituality important. Those times are a) initial assessments, b) conditional intervention, c) referrals and d) response to this subject when safeguarding and child protection issues arise.

- Abstract
Objectives: Several barriers have been identified as preventing or delaying access to children’s palliative care services. The aim of this study is to further explore such barriers from palliative care professionals’ perspective from two London boroughs. Methods: Qualitative-five children’s palliative care professionals’ perceptions were obtained from semi-structured interviews. Results: Three themes emerged: availability and adequacy of child palliative care (e.g., unreliability of services), obstacles to accessing palliative care (e.g., logistical challenges), and cultural values and family priorities. Conclusion: These findings contribute to the equal opportunities dialogue in this sector and the need for future research to address the challenges identified. © 2018 Taylor & Francis.

The use of technology in social work education is neither new nor without debate. The conversation has been gradually informing us of the challenges and controversies, as well as benefits in education, practice, policy, and research. Yet, in the face of COVID-19 and associated quarantine measures, social work education has been tasked with a fast-paced adjustment to online, and where feasible, hybrid learning. This reflection raises the argument that the pace of organisational adjustment is not always the same as those studying social work. This leaves many students in digital poverty and generates inequality gaps that may need addressing, with more inclusive curricula and alternative methods of practice learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background:Paramedics must be prepared to respond to crises in which a threat to a patient's health may result in death. They are therefore highly involved with end-of-life care.Aims:Involvement with end-of-life care is the context in which this paper examines how paramedics perceive and respond to this part of their role.Methods:This is a systematic literature review that examines current evidence.Findings:Five themes emerged, which suggest that paramedics are not prepared to work with crisis situations involving the end of patients' lives: emotional resilience; decision making; communicating death; recognising dying patients; and death education.Conclusion:The current review concludes that the dearth of data is not preventing improvements in services, nor education and training, in this field.

- Abstract
In this paper we present a distributed query framework suitable for use in federations of digital libraries (DL). Inspired by e-commerce technology, we recognize CPU-processing and queries (and query answers) as commodities and model the task of query optimization and execution as a task of trading CPU-processing, queries and query-answers. We show that our framework satisfies the needs of modern DL federations by respecting the autonomy of DL nodes and natively supporting their business model. Our query processing conception is independent of the possible distributed architecture and can be easily implemented over a typical GRID architectural infrastructure or a Peer-To-Peer network. Background:Culture and religion influence lived experience and particularly dying and grieving. Research has largely focused on exploring culturally and religiously sensitive practices, but not necessarily in palliative and hospice care or across nations. Acquired knowledge from the more advanced end-of-life care systems (eg the UK) tends to be generalized to other contexts where its cultural appropriation is not tested. Aim:This study explored the different qualities, among hospice and palliative professionals in Cyprus, describing cultural competence, cultural humility, and religious literacy. Design:A cross-sectional study of 41 palliative and hospice professionals in Cyprus, with the use of a 5-point Likert style questionnaire (a= 0.898). Setting:The study took place in Cyprus and participants were recruited from across palliative and hospice care organizations, including the only hospice in Cyprus, Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF), and the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society (CACS). Results:This study found that there are four main qualities that lead to effective culturally and religiously sensitive practice—informed decision-making, respect, adaptability, and nonjudgmental practice. Conclusions:Future education and training of professionals can consider these findings to appropriate approaches in practice that fit the Cypriot end-of-life care context more effectively.

23. Religious Disaffiliation and Sexually Minoritised Groups: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

- Abstract
Religious teachings and beliefs often convey an understanding of sexuality that excludes and marginalizes sexually minoritised people. This PRISMA-compliant scoping review selected 29 peer-reviewed papers about the religious disaffiliation of sexually minoritised people for full-text analysis and synthesis. With the use of reflexive thematic and bibliometric analysis, the review found that current research highlights the complicated relationship between religious and LGBTQIA+ identities. This relationship often leads individuals to disaffiliate from their religions and, in turn, either reaffiliate with a different faith tradition, remain with the same but under different terms, or stay nonaffiliated indefinitely. Further research is needed to better understand the non-linear and intricate process of disaffiliation that occurs when there is tension between one's religious identity and sexuality, as well as the impact that these pressures have on the mental health and well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

24. An Exploration of Lived Experiences of Sexually and Gender Diverse Staff Members in Higher Education: A Case Study.

Sexually and gender diverse staff in Higher Education Institutions may experience a sense of belonging and acceptance in inclusive environments, but may also face discrimination and bias, leading to feelings of isolation and exclusion. This paper reports on findings from 40 in-depth interviews and six focus group discussions with LGBTQIA+ self-identified staff members in a HEI and LGBTQIA+ allies who may identify as LGBTQIA+ themselves. Findings reveal that first impressions when joining a university as a staff member may have a long-lasting effect, while both positive and negative experiences are present. Further, a pattern is developed among gay men who may be placing more emphasis on their relationship with line managers, which can be supportive but at times toxic, unsupportive and inattentive. In addition to this, the findings highlight discrimination faced by staff, its impact on their wellbeing, and the significance of visibility and representation. This paper concludes that lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ staff members in Higher Education continue to be mixed with a high percentage of staff experiencing discrimination, primarily in the form of microaggressions, but institutions need to be more pro-active to foster safe spaces for all with more inclusive policies and practices.

- Abstract
Current debates about assisted dying and assisted suicide cover a series of medical, legal, moral, ethical and religious aspects. Yet, public views on the subject remain underexplored and, therefore, not always accounted for in the formation of public policy. This paper reports on empirical data from a cross-sectional study in the UK in 2019, which examines public views about the legalisation of assisted dying and assisted suicide, by means of a self-administered Qualtrics-based survey (self-devised vignettes). A combination of simple random and convenience sampling was used. Participants (n = 297) state their preference that both assisted dying and assisted suicide should be legalised in the UK (n = 70%), while doctors should be legally allowed to support such wishes of patients with an incurable and painful illness from which they will die (n = 62.22%). The paper concludes that public opinion needs to be further accounted for in policymaking and discourses regarding patient autonomy and dignity of care.

Abundant literature has argued the significance of religion, belief, and spirituality at the end of life. This study aims to add to this literature by exploring palliative professionals' views in this area. By means of an in-depth interviewing method, this paper reports data from 15 hospice and palliative care professionals. Participants were recruited from five hospice and palliative care organisations, and the data were managed and analysed with thematic analysis and NVivo (version 11). This study found three main reasons that make religion, belief, and spirituality important for patients and their loved ones when facing imminent death: the sense of comfort and security, meaning making, and closure. These reasons are not independent from one another, but complementary. This paper offers some implications for practice and concludes with a call for further research.

- Abstract
Background: This study is the first to document knowledge-base and knowledge attitudes about cultural competence and religious literacy in hospice and palliative care in Cyprus. Objective: The aim of this article is to investigate and document the knowledge-base and attitudes toward advancing knowledge and expertise of hospice and palliative care professionals in Cyprus. Measurements: A cross-sectional self-administered online survey, which reached 80 hospice and palliative care professionals employed in the sector, was used. The response rate was 64%, which increases the generalizability of the results. Forty-one surveys were completed fully and included in the study. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Frederick University in Cyprus (EEBK EP 2019.01.28). Results: This study shows that self-awareness, reflexivity, and respect toward the other and other people's culture and religion are associated with the current knowledge-base of the professionals, as well as attitudes toward future learning opportunities, lifelong learning, and initiating learning between professionals and agencies. The results present three themes: knowledge development , knowledge empowerment , and knowledge exchange . Conclusions: Professionals and organizations need to nurture and promote lifelong learning, supervision, and enable individual practitioners to engage with activities that will enhance their self-awareness, reflexivity, and attitude toward the unique identities of others.

- Abstract
The Coronavirus pandemic and associated measures for the protection of the public have impacted differently on different parts of the population and across different nations. In many areas, COVID-19 has also either exacerbated already existing or created new inequalities in relation to specific parts of the population. Older individuals are one group in society that has been widely impacted, while social isolation/shielding measures have placed them in higher risk of loneliness, isolation, financial deprivation and mental health challenges, to name a few. This commentary reflects on such inequalities across four European nations (the United Kingdom (UK), Republic of Ireland, Finland, Spain) and draws attention to the critical role of Gerontological Social Work (GSW), while emphasizing the ways in which social work can intervene. First, we identify common concerns for the rights of older people that span across all four nations, and second, we identify significant roles for GSW practitioners at the individual, community and policy levels and conclude with a call for GSW in these four nations to be reimagined in a time of global crisis.

Research has abundantly demonstrated a strong relationship between culture, religion, and the experiences of death, dying, and bereavement. Consequently, cultural competence and a religiously sensitive practice have become highly relevant to social policies and professional practice. However, our current knowledge of culturally competent and religiously sensitive end-of-life care is primarily context specific, with little space for generalizability. This article reports on findings from a qualitative comparative analysis of two nation-specific studies that examined religious literacy and cultural competency, respectively, among palliative-care professionals, drawing on similarities and attempting to identify further applicability of nation-centered knowledge. The study recognized six practice-based approaches in palliative and hospice care, when responding to cultural and religious or nonreligious identities of services users. These approaches intersect with each other via three organizational layers identified in the study: foundations, culture, and professionals. Each identified practice-based approach seems to be incomplete when working with individuals for whom religion, belief, and cultural identities are important. Change in practice is possible if all three organizational layers are considered simultaneously, while further research will shed more light about the benefits and challenges of each approach.

Objectives: Several barriers have been identified as preventing or delaying access to children's palliative care services. The aim of this study is to further explore such barriers from palliative care professionals' perspective from two London boroughs., Methods: Qualitative-five children's palliative care professionals' perceptions were obtained from semi-structured interviews., Results: Three themes emerged: availability and adequacy of child palliative care (e.g., unreliability of services), obstacles to accessing palliative care (e.g., logistical challenges), and cultural values and family priorities., Conclusion: These findings contribute to the equal opportunities dialogue in this sector and the need for future research to address the challenges identified.
